How To Run A Production Management Internship, Elana Schlossberg Apr 2016

How To Run A Production Management Internship, Elana Schlossberg

Capstone Projects 2015-Present

In Summer 2015, I was a production management intern at Williamstown Theatre Festival (WTF) in Williamstown, MA. From this experience, I discovered that, while the internship was a great overall experience, there were some aspects missing from the program. As an intern, I recognized that there were educational opportunities at WTF of which the intern supervisors did not take advantage. This project is my Master’s of Public Administration capstone project, and is important because it has the potential to change the course of the production management internship at WTF, and potentially at other theatre companies nationwide.

Providing Mental Health Treatment In A School Setting: The Creation Of School Based Mental Health Clinics, Ashley S. Aupont Apr 2016

Providing Mental Health Treatment In A School Setting: The Creation Of School Based Mental Health Clinics, Ashley S. Aupont

Capstone Projects 2015-Present

Historically, less than 20% of children and youth with mental health (MH) concerns obtain MH treatment. Federal and state policies have begun to support MH treatment in school settings. Initiatives have begun to ensure accessible MH services as the intersection of MH services and the education system has been more heavily scrutinized. In Broome County, school districts are looking to increase access to MH services. The Family & Children's Society is also responding to this need by creating School Based Mental Health Clinics.

Adapting To A Protracted Refugee Crisis: Analyzing The Humanitarian Response To The Syrian Refugee Crisis In Jordan, Zoe A. Bowman Apr 2016

Adapting To A Protracted Refugee Crisis: Analyzing The Humanitarian Response To The Syrian Refugee Crisis In Jordan, Zoe A. Bowman

Political Science Honors Projects

In the past, refugee status was considered a short-term consequence of conflict. Today, protracted refugee situations (PRS) are the norm rather than the exception. This shift has forced humanitarian actors to develop new strategies to handle the challenges of working with refugees in the long-term. This project examines the protracted refugee crisis of Syrian refugees in Jordan. Using interviews conducted in the summer of 2015 in Amman, Jordan, this paper asks (1) what are the implication of the PRS for Syrians in Jordan and (2) how can solutions implemented in past PRS provide answers on how to respond to the …

Access And Opportunity: Assessing The Factors Contributing To Women’S Education In West Africa, Aissa Barro

Poster Presentations

Through initiatives such as the Millennium Development Goals and Camfed, women’s access to education has been a main priority of intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations alike around the world. But how successful are international, national, and local campaigns to support women’s access to education? What factors contribute to the success rate of women’s opportunity for education in West Africa? This project will identify the factors that contribute to women’s access and opportunity to education in West Africa, by analyzing country data, national surveys, and reports from various intergovernmental organizations and nongovernmental organizations. Specific focus will be given to Guinea, Niger, and …

Minimum Wage Increases And Oregon’S Long-Term Care Sector, Mike Paruszkiewicz, Peter Hulseman, Emma Willingham Apr 2016

Minimum Wage Increases And Oregon’S Long-Term Care Sector, Mike Paruszkiewicz, Peter Hulseman, Emma Willingham

Northwest Economic Research Center Publications and Reports

Analysis of direct and "ripple" effects of Oregon's recent minimum wage increase in the long-term care industry.

Minimum wage proposals have dominated recent policy debate in Oregon, culminating in the February 2016 legislative session that included the passage of Senate Bill 1532, a three-tiered minimum wage increase to be phased in between 2016 and 2022. Barring changes in other states, the law will give Oregon the highest minimum wage in the country. While the immediate impacts of the law on workers earning near the minimum are substantial and relatively clear-cut, businesses face less certain outcomes as the delicate balance between …

"The Sugar'd Game Before Thee": Gamification Revisited, Michael J. Hughes, Jeff Lacy Apr 2016

"The Sugar'd Game Before Thee": Gamification Revisited, Michael J. Hughes, Jeff Lacy

Library Faculty Research

Gamification, the application of game elements to nongame contexts, was recently a subject of great interest in the library literature, inspiring a number of articles. That interest tapered off in tandem with gamification’s wider decline, but signs point to its reemergence. Anticipating renewed interest in gamification, the authors reviewed the literature to determine what has—and has not—been examined by librarianship’s proponents of gamification. They found serious concerns regarding gamification’s practical and ethical limitations. Moreover, the authors believe that the purported benefits of gamification are more readily found in its progenitor—games.

Cui Jian: Extolling Idealism Yet Advocating For Freedom Through Rock Music In China, Zhaoxi Liu Apr 2016

Cui Jian: Extolling Idealism Yet Advocating For Freedom Through Rock Music In China, Zhaoxi Liu

Communication Faculty Research

Examining Cui Jian's songs as text, this study attempted to provide a reading of its political meaning that is different from many previous studies. Through a textual analysis of the revolutionary symbols in four of Cui's hits, this study found that the political meaning of Cui's songs is much more nuanced than a simple oppositional message, as he simultaneously endorses the Communist rule for its idealism and disavows it for its political suppression. Being China's first rocker, Cui Jian is politicized by the social discourse surrounding him as well as his own expressions, as he pursues his idealism and identity …

Rural Emergings, Urban Imaginings: The Effect Of Urbanization On Senegalese Ethnic Identity, Arianna Calabrese Apr 2016

Rural Emergings, Urban Imaginings: The Effect Of Urbanization On Senegalese Ethnic Identity, Arianna Calabrese

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For the past 40 years, Dakar has been the destination of Senegal’s massive rural exodus, with millions of rural villagers flocking to the city in search of work and education. The rural exodus has produced a unique multi-ethnic environment, where villagers, traditions, cultures, and languages from across the country converge. Ironically, therefore, Dakar’s landscape has been distinguished by the creation of an urban culture by a population of rural inhabitants. This paper examines the effects of urbanization on ethnic identity and affiliation, and further discusses the impact of Urban Wolof on personal identification among Dakar’s citizens. It then demonstrates how …

“It’S Not The Pride Parade Model”: Investigating Changes In Queer Activist Practices In Sarajevo After 2008, Matthew Zarenkiewicz Apr 2016

“It’S Not The Pride Parade Model”: Investigating Changes In Queer Activist Practices In Sarajevo After 2008, Matthew Zarenkiewicz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In 2008, a group of queer activists in Sarajevo organized the Sarajevo Queer Festival in an attempt to raise the visibility of queer people in Sarajevo, but the event resulted in a violent attack on the queer community. Since 2008, the actors and tactics of activists have changed, moving from the single, more radical, Organization Q, to the emergence of more groups with a more moderate approach. My research poses the question how have the tactics of queer activists in Sarajevo changed since the attack on the Sarajevo Queer Festival and the passage of the 2009 anti-discrimination law. Through semi-structured …

Technology Research In Mine Action: Enough Is Enough, Russell Gasser Apr 2016

Technology Research In Mine Action: Enough Is Enough, Russell Gasser

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Twenty years ago I started work on a doctorate thesis asking the question: “Why has research into new technologies for mine action had so little success?” My research discovered that about one billion dollars had been spent by the year 2000 on fundamental and applied research to produce new technologies to solve the mine problem. The resulting benefit for humanitarian mine action was indeed very small. Since then, large-scale spending has continued with limited success. Researchers and their funders have not learned from continued, expensive failure. There is clear cause and effect at work, which means that many research projects …
