The Grad Commons In The Academic Library: Reimagining Collaborative Learning Spaces And Services For Graduate And Professional Students Through Participatory Design, Michael Courtney, Erika L. Jenns

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

During the Fall 2013 semester, the Indiana University Libraries officially launched the Grad Commons, a flexible, multipurpose space in the heart of the Herman B Wells Library’s research collection stacks to provide graduate and professional students easy access to the information resources and subject librarian expertise vital to their research. As part of a much larger vision that has sought to fulfill user needs by reimagining conjoined library spaces such as the Learning Commons, a 24/7 technology-infused learning center where students work on class assignments from start to finish, and the Scholars’ Commons, designed to stimulate scholarly conversation, interdisciplinary exchange, …

You’Re In Good Company: Developing A Research Conference For Advanced Graduate Students In The Humanities, Brian Vetruba, Daria Carson-Dussan, Melissa Vetter

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

In 2014, librarians at Washington University in St. Louis developed an annual research conference for advanced graduate students in the Humanities. This conference was inspired by the desire to connect to graduate students at the dissertation stage as librarians had observed a gap in librarian-graduate student interactions between the first years of graduate school and when students embark on their own dissertation research. Librarians discovered that graduate students often struggle in isolation with similar research questions as well as project management and dissertation writing; thus, we aptly entitled the conference “You’re in Good Company: A Mini-Conference for Advanced Graduate …

Naked And Afraid: Or, Giving Graduate Students The Clothes And Confidence For Data-Analysis Success, Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Abstract:

While masters- and doctoral-level graduate students in the social sciences are likely to have past undergraduate experience in doing secondary research such as literature reviews, they often have minimal to no experience in collecting and/or analyzing data (be it quantitative or qualitative in nature), a requisite for their completing theses or dissertations. Likewise, they are likely to be crunched for time and money resources that prohibits ambitious collections of new data, and thus they need guidance in finding existing data and accessible research software/tools for their original analyses. This presentation will give an overview of the specialized services I, …

Unique Library Services For Graduate Students: Support Throughout The Graduate Lifecycle, Susan Smith, Erin M. O'Toole, Rebecca Barham Apr 2016

Unique Library Services For Graduate Students: Support Throughout The Graduate Lifecycle, Susan Smith, Erin M. O'Toole, Rebecca Barham

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

In response to changing needs of graduate students, the University of North Texas Libraries have created unique services, spaces, and instruction. The transformation began with the recent creation of the Library Research Support Services (LRSS) department, a department focused on serving graduate students. The department quickly identified needs that fell into two categories: everyday needs and academic lifecycle needs. Everyday needs of graduate students include quiet study and writing space, writing assistance, and research assistance. Academic lifecycle needs are different, as needs vary depending on where a student is in the cycle: new graduate student, graduate student completing coursework, graduate …

Transforming Services: A Year Of Investigating User-Centered Marketing Strategies And Information Literacy Programming For Graduate Students, Lisa M. Martin, Porcia N. Vaughn

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

The University of Houston (UH) is a Carnegie-designated Tier One public research university that strives to serve more than 7,000 graduate and professional students. Graduate students have been historically underserved by the UH Libraries, however, in recent years the Libraries have made expanding services to graduate students a strategic initiative. UH Library administration has designated targeting specific user groups, including graduate students, with revitalized marketing and innovative programing a high priority.

Two project teams were established within the Liaison Services Department to investigate the role of liaison services in graduate education. Project Team 1 investigated best practices for marketing existing …

Black Women Matter: Assessing Scales To Examine Minority Stress And Intersectional Microaggression, Vanessa N. Jones Apr 2016

Black Women Matter: Assessing Scales To Examine Minority Stress And Intersectional Microaggression, Vanessa N. Jones

SEWSA 2016 Intersectionality in the New Millennium: An Assessment of Culture, Power, and Society

Greater understanding of minority stress and intersectional microaggression in African American women’s lived experience may contribute to improved health outcomes. To date, there is a scarcity of research exploring intersectionality and psychometric instruments. This review examines purpose, format, psychometric properties, and cultural applicability of seven measurement scales that assess gendered racism and sexual identity. Future research should include diverse samples of African American women to improve external validity. In clinical practice, measurement scales provide an objective tool to evaluate and differentiate minority stress.

The Motivations Behind Westerners’ Obsession With The Islamic Veil, Claire K. Alexander Apr 2016

The Motivations Behind Westerners’ Obsession With The Islamic Veil, Claire K. Alexander

What All Americans Should Know About Women in the Muslim World

In a world where we are constantly bombarded with countless images of Islamic terrorism, violence, and danger, it is not surprising that we have come to associate all aspects of Islamic society with malevolence. This destructive way of thinking has impacted the way we—as Westerners— think about, portray, and perceive Muslim men and women. While Muslim men are often depicted as hostile, cruel, and savage-like, on the other hand, Muslim women are usually depicted as powerless, obedient, and docile. These stereotypical representations of Muslim men and women have harmful consequences—consequences that not only promote Western ignorance, but also tarnish the …

Gender Roots: Conceptualizing "Honor" Killing And Interpretations Of Women's Gender In Muslim Society, Brittany N. Barry Apr 2016

Gender Roots: Conceptualizing "Honor" Killing And Interpretations Of Women's Gender In Muslim Society, Brittany N. Barry

What All Americans Should Know About Women in the Muslim World

The phenomenon of “honor” killing is one that has formed out of deeply rooted concepts of sexuality and gender roles in Muslim societies. These conceptions have been implemented into everyday life and social infrastructure and have created, in some places, a generally accepted power dynamic that subjugates women and generates conceptualizations about women’s sexuality and their assumed obedience. In recent decades the gender constructions of, predominantly, the Middle East and of other Muslim populations have captured the attention of Western thinkers, especially with regards to feminist thought. The Western gaze has produced a number of responses, some of which have …

Contraception, Abortion And Assisted Fertility Among Muslim Women A Look At Islamic Culture And Policy In Iran And Afghanistan, Hayley Jacobsen Apr 2016

Contraception, Abortion And Assisted Fertility Among Muslim Women A Look At Islamic Culture And Policy In Iran And Afghanistan, Hayley Jacobsen

What All Americans Should Know About Women in the Muslim World

Discourse on women's reproductive rights through the lens of Muslim culture. The use of contraception, assisted fertility and abortion, are analyzed in Iran and Afghanistan. The culture surrounding family planning is detailed through a woman’s community, family, religion and the laws that govern the society they live in, which all influence her decision making in these matters. This piece stands as a cultural analysis of women's agency specifically in Middle Eastern Muslim culture, as it stands as a part of a global women's rights movement.

Lovecidal: Walking With The Disappeared [Table Of Contents], Trinh T. Minh-Ha Apr 2016

Lovecidal: Walking With The Disappeared [Table Of Contents], Trinh T. Minh-Ha

Cinema & Media Studies

“Lovecidal: Walking with the Disappeared is filled with provocation and guided by evocation. Encompassing various forms (poetry, treatise, memoir, and historiography) and capaciously conceived, Trinh T. Minh-ha’s contemplation of war, state-authorized violence, state-sanctioned ‘security,’ and international amnesia is skillfully tempered by observations of beauty, humanity, and resistance. To say that this is an important book is in many ways an understatement; rather, Lovecidal is transformative.” —Cathy Schlund-Vials, author of War, Genocide, and Justice: Cambodian American Memory Work

Intertidal Interactions: Stakeholder Relationships Arising From Kitesurfing In Paje, Zanzibar, Jenna Walczak, Iris Levine Apr 2016

Intertidal Interactions: Stakeholder Relationships Arising From Kitesurfing In Paje, Zanzibar, Jenna Walczak, Iris Levine

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study investigated the growth of the kitesurfing industry in Paje, Unguja, Zanzibar in relation to its social, economic, and environmental impacts on the community. Prior research has noted that the increase in unregulated kitesurfing tourism in the intertidal zone in Paje has led to conflicts between various stakeholder groups— including seaweed farmers, fishermen, the tourist industry, tourists, and community members. This research aimed to promote a better understanding amongst all actors regarding aspects in which the kitesurfing industry can continue to benefit those involved while ensuring that the rights and livelihoods of the locals are upheld. In order to …

Patient Waiting Time: A Case Study Of The Medical Outpatient Department Of Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center, Adrienne Groccia, Godwin Mselle, Anzibert Rugakingira, Lodoe Sangmo, Happy Somboi, Francis M. Ngure

Southern African Journal of Policy and Development

Studies of patient waiting time are scarce in low-income countries. Significant consequences of long patient waiting times, such as reduced healthcare seeking behaviours, indicate that minimising patient waiting time should be prioritised in low-income settings. Several short and long-term intervention strategies to combat the effects of patient waiting time and improve overall efficiency are based on the analysis of patient waiting time at the Medical Outpatient Department of Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center.

The Value Of Recreational Fishing In The Irish Marine Waters: A Travel Cost Analysis Using On-Site Count Data Models, Stephen Hynes, Rainey Graeven Apr 2016

The Value Of Recreational Fishing In The Irish Marine Waters: A Travel Cost Analysis Using On-Site Count Data Models, Stephen Hynes, Rainey Graeven

Working Papers

This paper’s contribution to the understanding of marine recreational pursuits in Ireland is based on the estimation of the first sea angling demand function. We use this empirical work to inform the more general debate surrounding resource allocation between commercial fisheries and recreational anglers. The study compares the use of Poisson and negative binomial count data models to estimate sea angling trip demand. The models also account for truncation and endogenous stratification; two issues that need to be controlled for when dealing with on-site sampled populations. The models are then used to estimate the mean willingness to pay of the …

Islamophobia & Europhobia: Subaltern Discourse & Its Limits, Peter O'Brien Apr 2016

Islamophobia & Europhobia: Subaltern Discourse & Its Limits, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

This essay examines resistance to Islamophobia in the form of Europhobia produced by Islamists in Europe. By "Europhobia" I mean essentializing and distorting depictions of Europe (and the West) as thoroughly decadent, corrupt, and sadistic. In a process that I dub "inverted othering" Islamists emulate the discursive strategies of Islamophobes but invert their negative stereotypes of Muslims to portray (non-Muslim) Europeans as a menacing threat to the umma, or Arabic community. I spotlight three forms of "inverted othering" through systematic comparison of both Islamophobic and Europhobic discourse in Europe (including in cyberspace): Islamists invert the claim that Islam is …

Do Immigrants Affect The Profiles Of Us Exporters?, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Apr 2016

Do Immigrants Affect The Profiles Of Us Exporters?, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

We highlight that an increase in the stock of immigrants corresponds with greater numbers of U.S. firms that engage in exporting to foreign markets. Our results are obtained from the estimation of a multi-level mixed effects model. Overall, the effect of immigrants is relatively larger among small- and medium-sized enterprises and is smaller among large-sized enterprises. There are, however, considerable differences, both in the magnitude and in nature of the observed effects of immigrants on manufactured and non-manufactured goods exporters of comparable size categories. Similarly, heterogeneity is found in the effects of immigrants on the numbers of small-, medium-, and …

A Comparison Of Multiple Datasets For Monitoring Thermal Time In Urban Areas Over The U.S. Upper Midwest, Cole Krehbiel, Geoffrey M. Henebry Apr 2016

A Comparison Of Multiple Datasets For Monitoring Thermal Time In Urban Areas Over The U.S. Upper Midwest, Cole Krehbiel, Geoffrey M. Henebry

GSCE Faculty Publications

Traditional studies of urban climate used air temperature observations from local urban/rural weather stations in order to analyze the general pattern of higher temperatures in urban areas compared with corresponding rural regions, also known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. More recently, satellite remote sensing datasets of land surface temperature have been exploited to monitor UHIs. While closely linked, air temperature and land surface temperature (LST) observations do not measure the same variables. Here we analyze land surface temperature vs.air temperature-based characterization and seasonality of the UHI and the surface UHI (SUHI) from 2003 to 2012 over the …

Greek Life: Perceptions On Campus And In The Workplace, Elena Freedman

Honors Projects in Applied Psychology

The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of Greek students by four specific groups of people: undergraduate Greek students, undergraduate students who are not members of Greek organizations, Greek alumni, and hiring personnel. In addition, hiring professionals’ opinions and perceptions of Greek students were further explored to determine whether membership in a Greek organization is seen as an asset or a liability in the workforce. Attained or expected skills as a result of membership in a Greek organization were also elicited from Greek students, Greek alumni, and hiring personnel. Data analysis of stereotype responses showed that Greek students …

The Influence Of The Online Availability Of Usgs Topographic Maps On Weeding Decisions In Academic Libraries, Cheri A. Folkner, Mary C. Aagard Apr 2016

The Influence Of The Online Availability Of Usgs Topographic Maps On Weeding Decisions In Academic Libraries, Cheri A. Folkner, Mary C. Aagard

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study looked at the degree to which the online availability of U.S. Geological Survey historical topographic maps affects academic libraries’ decisions to withdraw the print versions of those maps. Other factors in making the decisions, such as usage, user preferences, support of academic programs, user discovery, shelving location, and printing options, were also investigated. Results show that while in 40% of the cases the online USGS historical topographic maps influenced the decision to weed, the need for space was the overwhelming driver of print USGS topographic map collection weeding within the past ten years.
