High Performance Bayesian Applications In Medical, Economics And Climate Sciences, Ahmed Almulihi Apr 2016

High Performance Bayesian Applications In Medical, Economics And Climate Sciences, Ahmed Almulihi

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

We apply high performance numerical integration to problems in Bayesian statistics. These are applied to data arising in the analysis of problems in such areas as medical statistics (birth weight data, heart transplant data, photocarcinogen data, radio therapy data), climate (global weather, tornado data), and general statistics applications (multivariate logistic distribution, multivariate normal, nonlinear regression). We compute Bayesian moment integrals using the ParInt integration software that runs efficiently on computer clusters. We compare our results to those in the literature and show excellent performance with respect to accuracy and execution time.

Evaluation Of The Discriminable Stimulus Effects Of 0.3 Mg/Kg 3, 4‑Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (Mdpv) And 1.0 Mg/Kg 4-Methylmethcathinone (4-Mmc) Using A Drug Discrimination Procedure In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Michael Berquist

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Experimental investigations into the behavioral and neurochemical effects of illicit β-ketophenethylamines (synthetic cathinones, “bath salts”) has increased in recent years. Two cathinone derivatives in particular, MDPV and mephedrone (4-MMC), have received a considerable amount of research attention given their relative popularity among users at the turn of the 21st century. Researchers investigating MDPV and 4-MMC have devoted much of their attention toward evaluating the drugs’ reinforcing efficacy, rewarding effects, receptor binding profiles, and effects on ambulatory responses.

There exist few published studies that have evaluated the discriminable stimulus effects of MDPV and 4-MMC using rodent drug discrimination procedures. To date, …

Can You Help Me Now? The Effects Of Cell Phone Use On Social Capital Formation, Simon Purdy Apr 2016

Can You Help Me Now? The Effects Of Cell Phone Use On Social Capital Formation, Simon Purdy

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Cell phones are the most widely spread communication technology in the modern day. Previous research into the effects of cell phone use has primarily focused on the individual-level, such as texting while driving, leaving a gap in our understanding of the technology’s effects on larger social processes. One such process that cell phones may affect is social capital, or the networks of assistance which exist in our lives, along with the associated norms of trust and reciprocity therein (Putnam, 2000). Recent trends in both social capital and the development and use of cell phones suggests that there may be negative …

The Digital Watchmakers: Playing With The Sacred In Video Games, Anthony Langley Apr 2016

The Digital Watchmakers: Playing With The Sacred In Video Games, Anthony Langley

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

With video games establishing itself as a multi-billion dollar industry, academia as a whole has been slowly looking at the medium as an object of study. The field of religious studies has also begun to take notice of it. At face value, this is a great a way to observe concepts of religiosity in a fairly new medium. In spite of this, the same questions are being asked. The first is how are the narrative of games depicting religious motifs? Secondly, what can we learn through the social interactions of people within a digital space about religion? Finally, how are …

Family And Peer Groups’ Impact On Adolescent Marijuana Use, Brian Lunn Apr 2016

Family And Peer Groups’ Impact On Adolescent Marijuana Use, Brian Lunn

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Differential association theory explains that once definitions favoring deviant behavior become in excess of definitions favoring conforming, one is at an increased risk of acting deviant. This study uses survey data collected from high school students in Delaware to test hypotheses derived from differential association theory on student marijuana use.Consistent with theoretical expectations, the logistic regression results show that both parents’ and friends’ attitudes toward drug use as wrong and having a good relationship with one’s parents significantly reduce the likelihood of marijuana use, while living in an unstable home environment significantly increases the odds of marijuana use. Interestingly, results …

Does Research On Evaluation Matter? Findings From A Survey Of American Evaluation Association Members And Prominent Evaluation Theorists And Scholars, Satoshi Ozeki Apr 2016

Does Research On Evaluation Matter? Findings From A Survey Of American Evaluation Association Members And Prominent Evaluation Theorists And Scholars, Satoshi Ozeki

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

  • Evaluation is a relatively new, practice-based field
  • Evaluation scholars lead the field by presenting their theories
  • Evaluation theories are not based on empirical evidence
  • Empirical investigation is required to establish the field of evaluation
  • There were calls for more research on evaluation (RoE)
  • The number of studies on RoE has increased in the past decade
  • It is unknown whether RoE is important in the evaluation community

A Case For Change In Montgomery County: A Summary Of Trends And Data, Dayton Together

Records of Dayton Together (MS-603)

The purpose of A Case for Change in Montgomery County: A Summary of Trends and Data is to frame a conversation around the questions "Do these trends and data, and the conclusions that can be drawn from them, indicate there is a critical need for change in Montgomery County? Will continuing the status quo in collaboration and governance provide for the communities and citizens of Montgomery County a future which is prosperous, equitable, and sustainable?" Without a conviction of a critical need for change by leaders and citizens of the County, it is not possible to have reasonable and civil …

The Three-Legged Stool Of Evidence-Based Practice In Eating Disorder Treatment: Research, Clinical, And Patient Perspectives, C. B. Peterson, Carolyn Becker, J. Treasure, R. Shafran, R. Bryant-Waugh Apr 2016

The Three-Legged Stool Of Evidence-Based Practice In Eating Disorder Treatment: Research, Clinical, And Patient Perspectives, C. B. Peterson, Carolyn Becker, J. Treasure, R. Shafran, R. Bryant-Waugh

Psychology Faculty Research

Background

Evidence-based practice in eating disorders incorporates three essential components: research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values, preferences, and characteristics. Conceptualized as a ‘three-legged stool’ by Sackett et al. in 1996 (BMJ), all of these components of evidence-based practice are considered essential for providing optimal care in the treatment of eating disorders. However, the extent to which these individual aspects of evidence-based practice are valued among clinicians and researchers is variable, with each of these stool ‘legs’ being neglected at times. As a result, empirical support and patient preferences for treatment are not consistently considered in the selection and implementation …

Is It Ever Ok To Lie To Your Lover?, Jason B. Whiting Apr 2016

Is It Ever Ok To Lie To Your Lover?, Jason B. Whiting

Faculty Publications

The healthiest relationships have a high degree of trust. However, it is surprisingly easy to be deceptive in an intimate relationship. Research has shown that about 10% of interactions between intimates contain deceptive elements, like exaggerations, excuses, or other lies. Not surprisingly, these have a distancing effect. But are all deceptions damaging? Isn’t it kind to protect each other from painful truths? It may depend on the motive.

Attitudes Of Air Pollution From Commercial Aircraft: A Comparison Between Cultures And Genders, Sierra L. Gaenicke, Scott R. Winter, Stephen Rice, Ismael Cremer

Human Factors and Applied Psychology Student Conference

Studies have focused on cultural and gender differences based on perceptions of air pollution. Although these studies provided valuable information on cultural and gender differences on perceptions of air pollution, there have not been studies conducted regarding consumer’s perceptions on air pollution from commercial aircraft and their willingness to fly. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine how varying pollution levels influenced participant’s willingness to fly across two nationalities and genders.

In the study, five hundred and ninety-nine participants from India and the United States answered questions related to their attitudes toward flying on an aircraft emitting air …

Why Do Boys Love Frozen, A Disney Princess Movie?, Payton E. Butler Apr 2016

Why Do Boys Love Frozen, A Disney Princess Movie?, Payton E. Butler

Butler Journal of Undergraduate Research

Frozen holds box office records for both Disney Princess films and animated features as a genre. The key to its success was capturing not only girls, but the whole child market of both girls and boys. How did “a princess movie” come to capture the heart and mind of the stereotypical American boy? Through analytical review of the film, as well as previous research on boys and their media preferences, I identify four factors that contribute to Frozen’s success: focused advertising, exciting action scenes, appealing humor, and a higher ratio of male to female characters. These factors have enabled boys …

The Disaggregation Of Value-Added Test Scores To Assess Learning Outcomes In Economics Courses, William B. Walstad, Jamie Wagner Apr 2016

The Disaggregation Of Value-Added Test Scores To Assess Learning Outcomes In Economics Courses, William B. Walstad, Jamie Wagner

Economics Faculty Publications

This study disaggregates posttest, pretest, and value-added or difference scores in economics into four types of economic learning: positive, retained, negative, and zero. The types are derived from patterns of student responses to individual items on a multiple-choice test. The micro and macro data from the Test of Understanding in College Economics (TUCE) are used to show how aggregate scores can be reinterpreted based on their learning components. The regression analysis shows the relative contribution from learning components to aggregate scores. A value-added or difference score has a potential problem because it is a mixture of positive and negative learning. …

Previous Exposure To Lsd Fails To Enhance The Psychomotor Stimulant Effects Of D-Amphetamine In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Keli Herr Apr 2016

Previous Exposure To Lsd Fails To Enhance The Psychomotor Stimulant Effects Of D-Amphetamine In Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Keli Herr

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

  • The hallucinogenic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) have been largely attributed to its high affinity for 5-HT2A receptors. However, LSD also has a high affinity at several other monoamine receptors (Nichols, 2004; Passie et al., 2008).
  • The contribution of dopaminergic mechanisms to LSD’s behavioral effects have not been investigated to the same extent that serotonergic mechanism have been studied. Some authors have hypothesized that chronic treatment of rats with LSD may produce a persistent behavioral state characterized by sensitivity to dopamine agonists (Marona-Lewicka and Nichols, 2007).
  • Repeated exposure to psychostimulant drugs is known to produce progressive increases in locomotor …

Recipe For A Healthy Collection Assessment, Paula Barnett-Ellis, Charlcie Pettway Vann Apr 2016

Recipe For A Healthy Collection Assessment, Paula Barnett-Ellis, Charlcie Pettway Vann

Presentations, Proceedings & Performances

Collection assessments are conducted at the Houston Cole Library to ensure that current programs are supported adequately and to find out if materials are needed for newly added programs. They are conducted approximately every 5 years or sooner if needed for program reaccreditations.

Subject librarians prepare collection assessment reports using either a detailed long method with conspectus worksheets, or a short method with more numbers and less narrative. Ingredients are mixed together with the help of the technical services and acquisition departments to prepare needed data.

Assessment reports on various Library of Congress subjects have the same basic recipe. Some …
