Trouble With The Neighbors: A Case Study Of The Political Relationship Between The Baltic States And Euro-Atlantic Security Institutions After Russia's Annexation Of The Crimean Peninsula, Girard Louis Bucello Iv

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper assesses the current state of the European security community in the aftermath of Russia's annexation of Crimea from the perspective of the three Baltic countries. The research qualitatively analyzes government documents, official statements, and publications by, and interviews with, scholars and policymakers to determine how recent Russian behavior has affected the perspective of the Baltic states, and how they have affected NATO and the EU. This paper finds that the annexation of Crimea vindicated those in the Baltic who had expected such behavior, and determines that the Baltic states have leveraged the EU and NATO to refocus attention …

The Farmers' Market Experience: Food To Fuel The Body And Soul, Ellery Brett Hinson Apr 2016

The Farmers' Market Experience: Food To Fuel The Body And Soul, Ellery Brett Hinson

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the rise in popularity of the farmers' market through ethnographic research of the Fredericksburg Farmers' market. The farmers' market shopper has become a well known stereotype -- a white, upper-middle class suburbanite who sees it as their moral duty to support their local community and economy through their consumer power. I argue that these shoppers are buying more than just healthy local food. Their interactions with the market and vendors build an experience that feels more authentic and real than the larger capitalist society the market exists within. Through their consumption of the farmers' market and its …

Musings On Inspiration: Inducing Inspiration And Increasing Donations To Charity, Rebekah Selbrede Apr 2016

Musings On Inspiration: Inducing Inspiration And Increasing Donations To Charity, Rebekah Selbrede

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This study examined different methods for inducing inspiration, sex differences in inspiration induction, and whether inducing inspiration would increase donations to charity. We found that men and women responded differently to various methods of inducing inspiration. Women were most inspired by the video and reflection groups, while men's inspiration did not differ by induction method. For women, but not men, inspiration mediated the relationship between induction method and amount of donation pledged indicating that their willingness to donate to charity increased as they felt more inspired. Despite differences in inspiration, men and women did not differ in amount donated, which …

The Effect Of First Language Dialect On Second Language Accent, Sarah Yaure Apr 2016

The Effect Of First Language Dialect On Second Language Accent, Sarah Yaure

Senior Capstone Theses

The purpose of this study was to discover how dialectal differences in L1 Spanish impact the L2 English pronunciation of 6 speakers (5 dialects). Spanish and English share several sounds (phonemes) such as /m, n, f/. However, both languages also contain distinct phonemes (Whitley, 2002). Due to this imperfect overlap, phonemes that are distinct in English may have been grouped into one category by learners, reflecting the Spanish inventory, which makes it more difficult to differentiate sounds in received and therefore produced English speech (Flege 2004). Even among Spanish dialects, phonemes can vary (Whitley, 2002). As a result, speakers of …

Can Nba Teams Benefit From Losing?, Ryan P. Hallisey Apr 2016

Can Nba Teams Benefit From Losing?, Ryan P. Hallisey

Honors Scholar Theses

It has been speculated that franchises in the NBA (national basketball association) lose on purpose because of the benefits that coincide with a team having a poor overall record. Teams that perform the worst are given the highest draft selections in the following season's rookie player draft, thus theoretically improving their chances of becoming a more winning team. Previous economists have used various methodology to prove that NBA teams do in fact lose on purpose; or tank. This paper builds upon this previous methodology to examine the direct impact, negative or positive, that losing on purpose has had on various …

Salience, Framing, And Decisions Under Risk, Uncertainty, And Time, Jonathan W. Leland, Mark Schneider Apr 2016

Salience, Framing, And Decisions Under Risk, Uncertainty, And Time, Jonathan W. Leland, Mark Schneider

ESI Working Papers

We propose a comparative model of decision making under risk, uncertainty, and time, in which large differences in payoffs and probabilities or dates of receipt are perceived as salient and overweighted in the evaluation process. The predictions of the model depend on what differences are compared across alternatives which, in turn, depends on how the choice is framed. We formalize a class of matrix-based frames which applies to decisions under risk, uncertainty, and time, and we specify two important types of frames within this class: minimal frames which provide the simplest representation of choice alternatives, and transparent frames which make …

State Dependent Price Setting Rules Under Implicit Thresholds: An Experiment, Justin Deloy Leblanc, Andrea Civelli, Cary A. Deck, Klajdi Bregu Apr 2016

State Dependent Price Setting Rules Under Implicit Thresholds: An Experiment, Justin Deloy Leblanc, Andrea Civelli, Cary A. Deck, Klajdi Bregu

ESI Publications

How firms make their pricing decisions is a fundamental question of macroeconomics. We use a laboratory experiment to examine individual choices in a price updating task that provide insight into how well state dependent models reflect behavior. We find that in general subjects behave as if they recognize the importance of a state dependent pricing strategy, but they are unable to ascertain this threshold with precision and they also exhibit a substantial degree of time dependence. As a result, they update prices too frequently, and perform statistically significantly fewer real effort profit-generating tasks than theoretically optimal under full state dependence, …

The Role Of Emotional Distress In Predicting Opiate Analgesic Medication Use In Chronic Pain Patients, Amy E. Kupper Apr 2016

The Role Of Emotional Distress In Predicting Opiate Analgesic Medication Use In Chronic Pain Patients, Amy E. Kupper

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

Chronic pain is a common, costly, and debilitating problem. The biopsychosocial model purports that biological, psychological, and social factors are involved in the experience of chronic pain. Multidisciplinary pain management programs adhere to the biopsychosocial model and successfully treat and manage chronic pain. Depression, anxiety, and opiate analgesic medication misuse and abuse are significant problems faced by many individuals with chronic pain, however these relationships are not well understood. This study examined a sample of 248 chronic pain patients who completed a multidisciplinary pain management program. Two hypotheses were tested. First, it was hypothesized that the relationships amongst change in …

Beyond The Millennium Development Goals: An Evaluation Of The War On Hiv / Aids In Kenya, Robert G. Nyaga

Theses and Dissertations

HIV/AIDS remains a threat to Kenya and other developing nations. This thesis aimed at assessing the HIV/AIDS situation in Kenya by examining the knowledge of Kenyans towards infection and spread HIV/AIDS, attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS, involvement of community opinion leaders in the HIV/AIDS campaigns, sharing of HIV/AIDS information, and government efforts to control HIV/AIDS. A sample of Kenyans (N= 103) was surveyed and asked to respond to several scales assessing each of the above items. Quantitative and qualitative methods reveal the knowledge and attitudes portrayed by Kenyans and show that, although much has been achieved, there is need …

Unmarried Midlife Adults And Economic Well-Being, Katie Finch Apr 2016

Unmarried Midlife Adults And Economic Well-Being, Katie Finch

Honors Projects

Much research has been conducted on how married older adults fare in comparison to unmarried older adults. Since the amount of unmarried older adults is increasing, I found it important to see how these unmarried groups (early divorcees, gray divorcees, never-marrieds, and widoweds) stacked up against each other in terms of economic well-being. Using the 2012 Health and Retirement Study, I looked at how demographic factors and economic well-being indicators were correlated to another. The demographic factors examined included gender, marital status, race, and educational attainment. Income, poverty level, and assets were used to assess economic well-being. Similar to previous …

Burned Out: The Relationship Between Coaching Style And Burnout In Elite Athletes, Ethan S. Bledsoe Apr 2016

Burned Out: The Relationship Between Coaching Style And Burnout In Elite Athletes, Ethan S. Bledsoe

Sport Management Undergraduate

Sport specialization and sampling are two ways youth athletes can play sports. Athletes playing in college, at the Division III level, sample sports throughout their childhood instead of specializing in one sport. There is not a lot of specific research done for each Division in the NCAA. This study is a cross-sectional survey of students and athletes at SJFC, which is a small Division III school in Western New York. Using surveys, data was found that supports the research question that Division III athletes and students sampled sports throughout their childhoods rather than specializing. This question can help parents determine …
