The Effect Of Historical Narratives And Flag Type, Maher A.R. Bigley, Alexandra E. Casella, Marike S. Sevigny-Morrissey, Amy E. Violante
Celebration
This research will examine the effect of mainstream or marginalized historical narratives and the Confederate or American flag on temporal distancing, patriotism, perception of injustice, and assimilationist national identity. We expect that participants exposed to marginalized narratives will indicate higher perceived distance, especially when exposed to the Confederate flag. We expect that participants exposed to mainstream narratives will be highest on blind patriotism, especially when exposed to the American flag. We expect that participants in the American flag marginalized narrative condition would perceive the most racism and would reject more assimilationist conceptions of national identity. For the dependent measures of …
Unmasking Penn Face: Measuring The Phenomenon And Its Relationship To Other Personality Constructs, Meagan A. Lupolt
Unmasking Penn Face: Measuring The Phenomenon And Its Relationship To Other Personality Constructs, Meagan A. Lupolt
Celebration
This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable scale to measure the phenomenon known in the media as “Penn Face”. The scale was simultaneously administered with established measures to gauge its association with personality constructs that were expected to be associated with it (or not). Given that this phenomenon has yet to be empirically investigated, research for scale development relied heavily on the media, internet blogs, and individual student accounts. The finalized measure elicited promising reliability and was correlated with a number of expected personality traits, especially: anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and perfectionism. Our findings suggest that Penn Face …

Ceramic Analysis and Radiocarbon Dating
Savana Deems
Student Scholar Symposium Spring 2016
Radiocarbon dating is not always a fool proof method of dating an archaeological site. There are many factors that can skew the data, such as back fill for a cultural feature coming from an area where a forest fire occurred thousands of years before, or at the very least, this data may not give the entire narrative of the occupation of a site. Sometimes a project may not be able to afford the hundreds of dollars required per sample to analyze charcoal remains. Ceramics however, are free to …
Sowing Seeds Of Opportunity: The Convergence Of Agriculture And Acculturation For Refugees In Atlanta, Cameron Owens Dunlap
Sowing Seeds Of Opportunity: The Convergence Of Agriculture And Acculturation For Refugees In Atlanta, Cameron Owens Dunlap
Symposium of Student Scholars
In 2015, there were 60 million people displaced by conflict and persecution. With refugees and asylees arriving en masse in foreign receiving countries, it is critical that host nations utilize methods of resettlement and integration that are both beneficial and sensitive to the needs of these vulnerable populations. This study documents an innovative win-win approach to community integration that benefits both hosts and refugees alike. Qualitative data was collected through more than 10 sessions of participant observation on community farms and more than 7 semi-structured interviews with program management and refugees to answer the question, what opportunities for these refugee …
Blue Eyes On Red Lists: Conservation And The Future Of The Blue-Eyed Black Lemur, Katherine Meier
Blue Eyes On Red Lists: Conservation And The Future Of The Blue-Eyed Black Lemur, Katherine Meier
Award Winning Anthropology Papers
The family Lemuridae represents a large and important group within the order Primate. Today, lemurs—endemic to Madagascar—are the most threatened mammal group on Earth. Almost every one of the 100-plus recognized species suffers from habitat destruction and other anthropogenic pressures. The IUCN lists the blue-eyed black lemur (Eulemur flavifrons) as critically endangered. Models suggest it will go extinct within the next decade and so far, conservation efforts have so far yielded little measurable success. For the blue-eyed black lemur, captive populations—typically serving as buffers against extinction— are experiencing problems that keep them from being viable for reintroduction into …

Religiosity And Prayer In Relation To Health And Life Satisfaction In Older Adults, Victoria L. Beach
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
The United States is facing a rapidly growing elderly population. The population aged 65 and older was estimated to be 43.1 million in 2012 and this is projected to increase to 83.7 million by 2050.
This research sought to understand the older adult experience through the relationship between religiosity, prayer, health, and life satisfaction in adults aged 65-84. In this cross-sectional design, 222 older adults were surveyed using convenience sampling.
The results showed a positive relationship between intrinsic religiosity and life satisfaction, as well as a positive relationship between prayer experience and health.
These results could have implications for clinical …

If They Liked It Then You Should Have Put A Number On It: Assessing Archival Instruction And Student Learning In Special Collections, Samantha Crisp
Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works
This poster describes a yearlong project to assess student learning and engagement in archival instruction sessions using primary source materials held in Augustana College Special Collections. Special Collections staff has taken a four-pronged approach to assessing these sessions: a special test-based assessment project targeting first year students in introductory rhetoric classes (LSFY101), one-minute surveys asking participating students about their experience, comprehensive surveys targeting students and faculty, and in-class worksheets graded against a rubric to determine students’ ability to apply skills learned during the sessions. All data has been quantified and will be used to improve future class sessions.

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
This paper reports on a collaborative exercise designed to generate a coherent agenda for research on mathematical cognition. Following an established method, the exercise brought together 16 mathematical cognition researchers from across the fields of mathematics education, psychology and neuroscience. These participants engaged in a process in which they generated an initial list of research questions with the potential to significantly advance understanding of mathematical cognition, winnowed this list to a smaller set of priority questions, and refined the eventual questions to meet criteria related to clarity, specificity and practicability. The resulting list comprises 26 questions divided into six broad …

Sablefish (Anoplopoma Fimbria) Scarcity And Zooarchaeological Data Quality In Northwest Coast Archaeological Sites, Reno Nims
Dissertations and Theses
Sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) is a scarcely represented species in Northwest Coast archaeology, but its remains are abundant at Tse-whit-zen, a large, Lower Elwha Klallam village in modern Port Angeles, WA that was occupied over the past 2,800 years. Because sablefish flesh has high nutritional value and it can be easily captured from nearshore waters in its juvenile form, sablefish should have been pursued where it was available. Therefore, the scarcity of sablefish in many Northwest Coast archaeological sites could indicate this species was not abundant in past fisheries. However, current zooarchaeological reports do not contain sufficient information on …

The Economic Determinants Of Domestic Terrorism In The United States, Sarah Anne Van Giezen
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper studies the economic determinants of domestic terrorism in the United States using a panel dataset of the fifty states and the District of Columbia from 1980 to 2005. The results suggest that individual economic wellbeing factors and predictive economic variables are significant economic determinants. However, economic variables are not major determinants of domestic terrorism.

Intensive Sound Production Treatment For Apraxia Of Speech: An Analysis Of Error Consistency, Victoria M. Abolafia
Intensive Sound Production Treatment For Apraxia Of Speech: An Analysis Of Error Consistency, Victoria M. Abolafia
Honors Scholar Theses
In the past, clinicians have diagnosed acquired apraxia of speech based upon the presentation of an inconsistent error pattern. However, recent research studies have begun to suggest quite the contrary, pointing towards a consistent pattern of errors in the speech of those with apraxia. The present study utilized an intensive Sound Production Treatment (SPT) for a 51-year-old male with severe acquired apraxia of speech and moderate-severe aphasia. Treatment was administered over a period of five days per week, three hours a day, for two consecutive weeks. During this treatment, probes were gathered daily to evaluate the efficacy of the intensive …
Dahlian Democracy As A Hobbesian State And The Legitimacy Of The U.S., Edward Harold Scheirer
Dahlian Democracy As A Hobbesian State And The Legitimacy Of The U.S., Edward Harold Scheirer
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
I reveal the Hobbesian undercurrents of Robert Dahl's political theory then apply his theory in an analysis of modern U.S. democracy compared to an analysis of John Locke's political theory of the same. I reveal that neither explain U.S. democratic legitimacy very well, but that Hobbe's political theory does based off of an objective definition.

"Yo, Dre, I'Ve Got Something To Say": Listening To Compton's Hip-Hop Landscape, Ian T. Spangler
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper is based on the notion that sound is just as valuable a methodology as sight when interpreting a place. Building on a three-part theoretical framework of text, sound, and performance, I conduct a discourse analysis of selected songs by Kendrick Lamar and N.W.A. to interpret the landscape of Compton, California, determining what social discourses each artist is reinforcing/resisting, and the ways in which those discourses structure perceptions of the city.

Likes, Shares, And Friend Requests: Analyzing Facebook Groups For Incoming College Classes, Ray Celeste S. Tanner
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
University "Class Of" Facebook groups are online spaces where prospective students can get acquainted with the school as well as meet other students who are planning on attending the university. Since Facebook is already used by so many high school and college students, Facebook groups are an ideal place for Universities to interact with their incoming class. If used correctly, "Class Of" Facebook groups give administrators the opportunity to reinforce existing ideologies of the institution, sway students who are unsure of their decision to attend the school, develop a sense of inclusion and belonging, create and sustain students' excitement, answer …

As part of the Libraries strategic plan, the College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University is working to implement more collaboration between Media Services, Librarians, and campus IT. We held several brainstorming sessions to talk about how we might collaborate, and we are currently implementing our plan. We are holding training sessions for all librarians and media staff on various topics and have implemented librarian liaisons specializing in a particular media service, i.e. 3D printing, video editing, and data visualization. These liaisons will help tie information literacy learning goals into media instruction sessions.
Faith And Protracted Social Conflicts: Faith And Loathing In Sarajevo, Joseph Mcniff
Faith And Protracted Social Conflicts: Faith And Loathing In Sarajevo, Joseph Mcniff
Senior Capstone Theses
Bosnia is a peculiar state. This peculiarity stems from its ethnic and religious heterogeneity that has, in the past, created a multicultural and remarkably tolerant society. This was exemplified by the city of Sarajevo, which showed off its multiculturalism and its supposedly inclusive social structure to the world during the 1984 Winter Olympics. Ten years later, however, the tolerance and inclusiveness of Sarajevo was under siege by the Yugoslav military (JNA) and paramilitaries associated with the Serbian Democratic Party (SDS). The Yugoslav Wars of Succession (1991-2002) tends to be categorized as an ethnic conflict stemming from primordial, or ancient, hatreds. …
Less Than Agency: Religious Agency And The System Of Disability, Jasmyn Kopcsandy
Less Than Agency: Religious Agency And The System Of Disability, Jasmyn Kopcsandy
Senior Capstone Theses
In the following essay, I will attempt to extend the understanding of disability as a
constitutive system – based on the social model of disability proposed by Mike Oliver – to the discussion of religious agency. I will first ground this theoretical application in a literature review with two areas of focus: (1) the dichotomy of modernity/secularism and religion, and (2) conceptualizations of agency. Specifically, my research question will be: how can “disability” as a category of analysis serve as a lens through which to analyze Western perceptions of religious agency in reference to Muslim women, and how does ableism …
Queer Anthropology And The Mapping Of “Human”, Markeeta Holmes
Queer Anthropology And The Mapping Of “Human”, Markeeta Holmes
Senior Capstone Theses
This research examines the many actors and ideological movements at the intersection of sexuality, agency, and power that influence lalas to create their identities. Critiquing notions of sex, gender, and sexuality via Chinese lala experience not only reveals fissures and discontinuities in the "reality" of these categories, but also de-essentializes Western notions of the normal queer. Rather than being an extension of the queer movement in the West, the tongzhi movement in China is unique and although Western imaginings construct its own queerness as the first and only in the world, these struggles have always been forthcoming in other parts …
A Pinocchio Problem: Bureaucratic Drift And Constitutional Separation Of Powers, Brittanie Edstrom
A Pinocchio Problem: Bureaucratic Drift And Constitutional Separation Of Powers, Brittanie Edstrom
Senior Capstone Theses
The U.S. Constitution outlines a three-branch government, with each branch having separate and distinct powers, and a system of checks and balances to maintain accountability. According to these two principles, the federal bureaucracy has the authority to execute legislative action but it must remain accountable to Congress to ensure that congressional statutory intent is reflected in the execution of legislation. When the bureaucracy does not accurately execute the wishes of Congress, these principles are violated. Scholars have labeled this phenomenon bureaucratic drift. This thesis will examine the interplay between Congress and the Bureaucracy and attempt to address the following question: …

Ethics In The Nonprofit Sector: A Study On The American Red Cross, Emily Smith
Honors Theses
When disaster strikes in the United States, there is one organization that is on everyone’s mind, the American Red Cross. It has operated for over a hundred years on the simple premise of delivering aid to those in need. The organization does this by reacting effectively and efficiently to natural and man-made disasters and delivering humanitarian aid to those affected. In recent years, though, the American Red Cross has come under scrutiny for mismanagement and ineffective disaster relief. The purpose of this paper is to use ethical standards of the nonprofit sector to evaluate and explain the performance of the …
