Public Administration Capstone Reports - Archive
Program Coordinator Victoria Mendoza of the Carrollton - Farmers Branch ISD requested a comprehensive evaluation of the Farmers Branch Elementary and Vivian Field Middle School Mentoring Program and its impact on student achievement. The program is in its fifth year of operation and has served approximately 185 students. Mendoza requested an evaluation to determine if the mentoring program is successful, how the district should measure the impact of the program, and what improvements could be made to improve the program from the evaluation data that is collected.
Challenging Students At Fort Worth Christian School To Engage The Economically Disadvantaged In Their Community, James Hensley
Challenging Students At Fort Worth Christian School To Engage The Economically Disadvantaged In Their Community, James Hensley
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This doctor of ministry thesis presents a project in which I led a group of students at Fort Worth Christian School in experiences that challenged them to be more engaged with the economically disadvantaged in their community. The problem I identified at the outset of the project was a lack of such experiences along with troubling attitudes about poverty. Many students initially demonstrated ambivalence or even outright hostility toward the notion of helping people who live in poverty. I found such attitudes to be contrary to the teachings of Jesus and to my central beliefs as a Christian. I believed …
Latent Semantic Similarity In Initial Computer-Mediated Interactions, Vivian P. Ta
Latent Semantic Similarity In Initial Computer-Mediated Interactions, Vivian P. Ta
Psychology Theses - Archive
The initial interactions of same-sex strangers were investigated to examine the development of latent semantic similarity (LSS; that is, how interaction partners come to use words in the same way) in computer-mediated interactions. A previous study by Ta, Babcock, and Ickes (2016) found that verbal behaviors, rather than nonverbal behaviors, uniquely predicted the development of LSS in the initial face-to-face interactions of same-sex strangers. This suggested that LSS might develop similarly and as efficiently in conversations in which only words are exchanged (i.e., computer-mediated interactions). As such, using a sample of 120 same-sex dyads (all strangers) who interacted with each …

Intercultural Hierarchy Reinforced Through North American Voluntourism Efforts In Latin America And The Caribbean, Nancy Michelle Ford
Intercultural Hierarchy Reinforced Through North American Voluntourism Efforts In Latin America And The Caribbean, Nancy Michelle Ford
Student Scholarship
In this thesis, my goal is to share the insight I have gleaned from my academic, professional and personal involvement in the region. The most dominant theme I have observed is the rising trend of North American volunteer tourism (also referred to as “voluntourism”) in LAC and unanticipated consequences it involves. This trend reinforces an intercultural hierarchy, which will be the focus of my study.
I will begin with an overview of the intercultural, hierarchical mentality and explain two key aspects it involves: the North American “Planner” or “fix-it” tendencies toward the region, and the region’s developed dependence on North …
Student Perception On Female Discrimination In Accounting, Qiuting Zheng
Student Perception On Female Discrimination In Accounting, Qiuting Zheng
Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses
Approximately 72,648,000 women participate in the labor force compared to 31,543,000 women in 1970 (U.S. Department of Labor). In the 1950s, women were only 30% of the workforce (Toossi, 2002). In 1970, 1990, and 2010, the percentage of working women increased to 40%, 45%, and 47% respectively (Humphrey, 2013). However, students have wrong perceptions about discrimination against women, and, since perceptions and facts are not the same thing, their perceptions might make them misunderstand the accounting profession. This study confirmed that there are misperceptions. To gauge students’ perceptions, I conducted a survey named “Gender Diversity in Accounting” at the Walton …
Basketmaker Ii Warfare And Fending Sticks In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib
Basketmaker Ii Warfare And Fending Sticks In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib
Anthropology ETDs
Direct physical evidence and rock art, including head skin trophies, indicate that violence linked to warfare was prevalent among the preceramic farmers of the North American Southwest known as Basketmakers. The degree of intergroup conflict indicates that Basketmakers may have needed defense against atlatl darts. In the early 1900s archaeologists suggested that distinctive wooden artifacts served this purpose. Despite resembling Puebloan rabbit sticks, the first to report these S-shaped and flattened sticks with longitudinal facial grooves thought that hunting was not their purpose. Yet the sticks appear singularly inadequate for the task of atlatl dart defense. I evaluate the suggested …
Estimating Ancestry And Genetic Diversity In Admixed Populations, Anthony Joseph Koehl
Estimating Ancestry And Genetic Diversity In Admixed Populations, Anthony Joseph Koehl
Anthropology ETDs
Admixture is a form of gene flow that occurs when long separated populations come into contact and exchange mates. Admixture has been a primary mechanism in the formation of many modern human populations. The genetic characteristics of an admixed population are intermediate to, yet distinct from, those of its ancestors. In this dissertation, I investigate biological and statistical factors that enter into the analysis of admixed populations using genetic marker data. In chapters one and two, I use genotype data from published sources that contain 618 microsatellite loci. In chapter three, I simulate genotypes of 500 microsatellite loci. In chapter …
Cest: City Event Summarization Using Twitter, Deepa Mallela
Cest: City Event Summarization Using Twitter, Deepa Mallela
Computer Science Graduate Projects and Theses
Twitter, with 288 million active users, has become the most popular platform for continuous real-time discussions. This leads to huge amounts of information related to the real-world, which has attracted researchers from both academia and industry. Event detection on Twitter has gained attention as one of the most popular domains of interest within the research community. Unfortunately, existing event detection methodologies have yet to fully explore Twitter metadata and instead rely solely on identifying events based on prior information or focus on events that belong to specific categories. Given the heavy volume of tweets that discuss events, summarization techniques can …

Determination Of Spatial And Temporal Variations Of Volumetric Soil Water Content Using Ground Penetrating Radar: A Case Study In Thailand, Thanop Thitimakorn, Suppanut Kummode, Sasikan Kupongsak
Applied Environmental Research
In this research, ground penetrating radar (GPR) was used to determine the volumetric soil water content (VSWC) of a loamy soil. The GPR was set up in the ground wave fixed offset me-thod using both 400 and 900 MHz frequency antennae. By estimating the relative dielectric per-mittivity of the soils, these values were converted to the VSWC by Topp's equation. The gra-vimetrically calculated VSWC values from the soil samples at different depths were used as thereferences. In addition, the ability of the GPR method to detect variation in the VSWC over time was evaluated in three periods spanning the dry …

The Analysis Of Garbage Management Tools Based On The Levels Of Transactional Collaboration Between Shipping Company And Seaport, Chalermpong Senarak, Kamonchanok Suthiwartnarueput, Pongsa Pornchaiwiseskul
Applied Environmental Research
Marine garbage reception facilities can effectively prevent marine pollution when adequately implemented together with other management tools. This paper analyzes the garbage manage-mentpolicy based on transactions between shipping companies and the seaport. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to scrutinize the influence of transactional colla-boration (independent variable) on the different reasons for using GRF of the shipping firms (dependent variable). The study indicates that the motivations of ship operators (identified as laws and regulations, navigation limitations, partnerships, competitiveness and environmentalconsciousness), varies depending on frequency of transaction during the year. Management po-licies varied by ship operator. In addition, an over-optimistic …

Love On - The Life Of A Suicide Survivor: A Performance Autoethnographic Study, Patricia R. Wheeler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Suicide touches the lives of millions of people each year in this country alone, yet conversations about suicide loss and survival after a loss remain taboo and often do not happen. The story I performed for this performance autoethnographic study centers on my life as a survivor of suicide. It provides a starting point for dialog regarding trauma, grief, and suicide loss. The narrative was constructed directly following the sudden death of my father, which had a direct effect on my ability to produce artistic work. The development, staging and performance of the story were altered to account for the …
Interdependent Mechanisms For Processing Gender And Emotion: The Special Status Of Angry Male Faces, Daniel Harris, Vivian Ciaramitaro
Interdependent Mechanisms For Processing Gender And Emotion: The Special Status Of Angry Male Faces, Daniel Harris, Vivian Ciaramitaro
Honors College Theses
While some models of how various attributes of a face are processed have posited that face features, invariant physical cues such as gender or ethnicity as well as variant social cues such as emotion, may be processed independently (e.g., Bruce & Young, 1986), other models suggest a more distributed representation and interdependent processing (e.g., Haxby, Hoffman, & Gobbini, 2000). Here we use a contingent adaptation paradigm to investigate if mechanisms for processing the gender and emotion of a face are interdependent and symmetric across the happy-angry emotional continuum and regardless of the gender of the face. We simultaneously adapted participants …

The Relationship Of Reflective Functioning To Parent Child Interactions In A Sample Of Fathers With Concurrent Intimate Partner Violence Perpetration And Substance Abuse Problems, Carla Smith Stover, Erica Elizabeth Coates
Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications
This study is the first to examine reflective functioning (RF) and direct parent-child interactions of fathers with concurrent intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and substance abuse (SA) problems. Twenty-four fathers, with children between the age of one and seven, completed a structured interview to assess RF, self-report measures of hostile-aggressive parenting behaviors, IPV perpetration severity, SA severity, and a coded play session with their children. Results of three simultaneous multiple regressions revealed that RF in fathers was not associated significantly with observed parenting behaviors. However, fathers' SA severity emerged as a significant predictor for child avoidant behavior and dyadic tension, …
The Taper Tantrum Of 2013: Momentum-Driven Or A Return To Fundamentals?, Colette L. Terhune
The Taper Tantrum Of 2013: Momentum-Driven Or A Return To Fundamentals?, Colette L. Terhune
Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study explores the driving force behind the Taper Tantrum of 2013. Following the Fed’s announcements of potential QE tapering, investors poured of the bond market, causing yields to rise sharply. This analysis seeks to determine whether this was a momentum-driven reaction or a return to fundamental values. Throughout this paper, fundamental determinants of bond prices and investor returns are combined with trading volume and bid-ask spread data to determine the motivating market force. The findings suggest that the Taper Tantrum was a return to fundamental bond prices following an asset bubble burst, likely due to momentum trading.

On Associative Stigma: Implicit And Explicit Evaluations Of A Mother Of A Child With Autism, Ryan Thibodeau, Juliet R. Finley
Psychology Faculty/Staff Publications
Individuals with psychiatric problems are subjected to highly damaging stigma. Some research suggests this stigma may extend to associates (e.g., family, friends), who themselves report being devalued, avoided, and rejected. The research literature on associative stigma is largely qualitative, and extant quantitative research has utilized only explicit measures which are notably weakened by self-presentational motives. In the current study, 95 undergraduates were randomized to hear one of two audio recorded vignettes pertaining to a fictional mother of a child with either autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or severe asthma. Participants then completed an Implicit Association Test capturing implicit evaluations of the …

Heart Of Darkness: New Hampshire Campaign Finance Law Since Citizens United, Jay Surdowski
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
[Excerpt] “Perhaps one of the greatest election law paradoxes in the United States is that New Hampshire—the First in the Nation Presidential Primary State—a State whose citizenry famously prides itself on political engagement—is also a State with some of the most complicated and sporadically enforced campaign finance laws in any jurisdiction. The post-Citizens United world, wherein vast quantities of unlimited and anonymous corporate and individual donations by some of the wealthiest citizens are freely flowing (so-called “Dark Money” because the identities of donors are shielded by law), has only exacerbated the loud creaks of the rickety campaign finance law firmament …

Examining Co-Management Of National Parks Through The Lens Of Common-Pool Resource Design Principles: A Comparative Case Study Of Liwonde And Majete In Malawi, Timothy M. Chana, Panate Manomaivibool
Applied Environmental Research
Co-management which was founded on common-pool resource design principles has been popularized in solving sustainability challenges of nat ional parks. Co-management was im-posed on all national parks in Malawi under the 2000 Wildlife Policy. However, such a top-down approach might neglect the local contexts that influenced policy implementation. The objective of this study was to examine the implementation of co-management and determine the extent of conformity to Ostrom's eight design principles. The Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) framework was engaged through a qualitative case study of Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve. Based on co-management documentations and key informant …
