Panel title: Staffing a Library Publishing Program: The Whos, Hows, and Whens
Panel abstract: This session aims to address one of the most frequently raised concerns about library-led publishing: how to plan for staffing this new endeavor? The panel will discuss two inflection points in staff planning for library publishing: what it takes to get started (for a library that is just beginning to think about publishing), and what it takes to grow (for a library that has a few years of experience and wants to do more). It will also shed light on one of the least understood, and …

Library As Publisher: Are You Ready To Support Your Community By Assisting In Content Creation?, Teresa A. Fishel, Jacki Betsworth
Teresa A. Fishel
A growing role for all types of libraries is to enable content creation by members of their community. One type of role is by “publishing” or distributing that work so that it is available for others. Whether publishing an electronic journal or book or supporting authors for traditional publishing, what is the role libraries could or should be taking? While many academic libraries now host student and faculty journals, what about monographs? Some academic libraries are now exploring how to support faculty interested in producing OA textbooks. A recent article in American Libraries (“Wanna write a good one? Library as …

This is a case study about the implementation of an institutional repository (IR) at Marshall University. Libraries have always collected information from a worldwide marketplace and have disseminated these resources locally. The IR has created a new function for the library by making it practical to acquire locally developed resources and to disseminate them freely worldwide. This has altered the traditional role of librarians and suggests a broader set of implications for the future usefulness and relevancy of the IR as doors open to new partnerships that will strengthen the university and the library’s place within it.

Data management and curation is a new challenge with the emerging trend of data-dependent scholarly research. Due to the lack of common standards and best practices, current data management and curation practices have been varied. This poster presents a project that examines the common practices of data management and curation that helps understand the scope of and factors behind such variations. The sample of this study consists of 171 unique data repositories created by 164 institutions from 95 countries worldwide. The preliminary results indicate that data management and curation is a global issue. Currently, academic institutions and government agencies are …

Erau Scholarly Commons, July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015, Anne M. Casey, Chip Wolfe, Brittany Blanchard
Annual Reports
Scholarly Commons continued to grow in 2014-2015, not only in content added and downloads, but in maturity of the process. At the beginning of the second year, many of the early challenges resolved as teams that oversee the administration and new development began to understand the system and each other’s strengths.
Members of the university community also developed a better understanding of Scholarly Commons and its value to many aspects of the research and academic mission. In particular, various departments turned to Scholarly Commons to host conferences and events. Also, members of the Oversight Team met with representatives of Sponsored …

Wyoming Scholar’s Repository (WySR), is an initiative by the University of Wyoming Libraries to support our scholars and provide a Green Open Access solution. WySR (http://repository.uwyo.edu/) disseminates a wide variety of scholarship, including faculty papers, student scholarship, conference proceedings, and journals. The Digital Collections office and the Scholarly Communication Librarian have been implementing and managing WySR by searching our purchased electronic materials, relying on the SHERPA/RoMEO database of publisher policies, and communicating with faculty to seek permissions to bring their scholarly publications into the repository. This presentation will discuss the differences among four colleges at the University of Wyoming: College …

This paper will provide an overview of current topics in Digital Scholarship and Scholarly Communications DS/SC and draw connections between these new areas and the traditional skill set of electronic resources librarians (ERLs). Commonalities between the skills outlined in the Core Competencies for Electronic Resources Librarians (CCERL) and those needed for success in DS/SC will form the basis of the author's recommendations for involvement in these new areas.
