While the legal precedent of affirmative action in U.S. higher education is well documented, graduate admissions practices that withstand strict scrutiny need further documentation. This chapter fills that gap in three ways. First, we briefly highlight the history of affirmative action in U.S. higher education as it relates to broadening the participation of URMs. Second, we offer best practices in U.S. graduate admissions that take into account the benefits of diversity while working within legal guidelines. We then close with considerations for future scholarship, policies, and practices.

Csi Agent On A Mission Game App, Ju Mae Rosie Ching

CSI is a one-of-a-kind and first-ever iPad gaming app released early August, with the flash game at http://www.rosieching.com/csi. My primary objective was to realize my dreamed-up “MISSION STATISTICS” theme for students to apply their skills in hypothesis tests and linear regression. Another is the incorporation of their CSI results into an “enrichment 5%” of their grades. The harder an agent works, the higher his score, the sweeter the fruit of the labour which students always show massive enthusiasm for. It is also critical that students review their real-time progress, and I have ensured that in every step of each country’s …

In this paper, we present a classification based system to discover knowledge and trends in higher education students’ projects. Essentially, the educational capstone projects provide an opportunity for students to apply what they have learned and prepare themselves for industry needs. Therefore mining such projects gives insights of students’ experiences as well as industry project requirements and trends. In particular, we mine capstone projects executed by Information Systems students to discover patterns and insights related to people, organization, domain, industry needs and time. We build a capstone projects mining system (CPMS) based on classification models that leverage text mining, natural …

Members of a major world religion are required to register their affiliation and ordered to wear badges of identification. They are tracked. Their places of worship are put out of commission. They are shamed in public for being who they are, and no one offers them help in even the more dire situations. The year is 2015, and Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has recently suggested all American Muslims should “absolutely” be required to register their identities in a database, for monitoring purposes because, in his words, “Our country has no management.”

This poster was presented at the Association for Information Science and Technology’s (ASIS&T) Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO on November 9, 2015. Accessing, using and managing data is increasingly recognized as an important learning outcome in higher education. Approaches to data literacy have typically been informed by information literacy. New approaches to information literacy have emerged that address how information is used in the different disciplinary contexts in which people learn and work. Successful approaches to data literacy will also need to address contextual concerns. Informed learning is an approach to information literacy that purposefully addresses contextual concerns by …
