[Sabbatical Report], Angela M. Jerome

Sabbatical Reports

I use argumentation theory to illustrate that the NCAA's main obstacle in defending its policies on amateurism and impermissible benefits, that many perceive to be problematic, lies in the fact that its justifications are built on weak premises that conflict with the core values of its opposition. In (a further) essay I argue that the typology of renewal rhetoric, which is largely understudied, may be used as a tool for collegiate athletic directors to follow when navigating a "risky" hire. (Finally I) will report the results of a longitudinal, RCap-funded study I conducted during my sabbatical to assess one women's …

Repeated Aripiprazole Treatment Causes Dopamine D2 Receptor Up-Regulation And Dopamine Supersensitivity In Young Rats, Fausto A. Varela, Taleen Der-Ghazarian, Ryan J. Lee, Sergios Charntikov, Cynthia A. Crawford, Sanders A. Mcdougall

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Aripiprazole is a second-generation antipsychotic that is increasingly being prescribed to children and adolescents. Despite this trend, little preclinical research has been done on the neural and behavioral actions of aripiprazole during early development. In the present study, young male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were pretreated with vehicle, haloperidol (1 mg/kg), or aripiprazole (10 mg/kg) once daily on postnatal days (PD) 10–20. After one, four, or eight days (i.e., on PD 21, PD 24, or PD 28), amphetamine-induced locomotor activity and stereotypy, as well as dorsal striatal D2 receptor levels, were measured in separate groups of rats. Pretreating young rats …

A Missing Piece In The Sustainability Movement: The Human Spirit, Deborah S. Peterson Apr 2014

A Missing Piece In The Sustainability Movement: The Human Spirit, Deborah S. Peterson

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

The sustainability movement, committed to the health of our natural world, is making a critical contribution to society. While many agree the sustainability movement should focus on the natural world, recent articles call for an additional focus on human welfare. This article proposes that a missing piece of the sustainability movement is a discussion of the role of the human spirit. By focusing narrowly on an examination of the state of the natural world, we are neglecting to incorporate the deep and enduring power of the human spirit to transform our natural and human-made environment and to support change agents …

Bridges Between Worlds | Chairperson's Summary | April 2014, Ap Mine Ban Convention

Global CWD Repository

Bridges between Worlds was a global conference sponsored by the European Union that addressed fundamental questions about the place of landmine victim assistance in other domains, such as the worlds of disability, heath care, education, employment, development, poverty reduction and human rights.

The Bridges between Worlds Chairperson’s Summary highlights that those who care deeply about the fulfilment of the Convention’s promise to landmine victims and survivors have much in common with those concerned with the wellbeing and the rights of women, girls, boys and men injured and living with disabilities regardless of the cause.

Expanding The Conversation: Factors Influencing Quality Multicultural Literature In Western United States Elementary School Libraries, Maria Elena Martinez

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This study is a follow-up analysis of the 2012 study titled‚ A Study of the Availability of Multicultural Children’s Literature in Treasure Valley Schools: Quality, Access, and Inclusion. The focus of the initial study was the quantity of multicultural literature available in elementary schools; the focus of the current study is the selection process of the literature. Quality multicultural literature encourages children to reaffirm the values of their own culture and come to appreciate those of others. Risk Of Eating Disorders And The Pressures To Be Thin: Female College Athletes Vs. Non-Athletes, Lauren Ganim Apr 2014

Risk Of Eating Disorders And The Pressures To Be Thin: Female College Athletes Vs. Non-Athletes, Lauren Ganim

Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences

The objective of this study is to determine the relative level of risk female college athletes and non-athletes have in developing an eating disorder. In addition, the study identifies the pressures faced by each group and how these contribute to the risk of eating disorders. The study was conducted using two surveys: an EAT-26 test and a pressures questionnaire. The EAT-26 test is a standardized self-measure of symptoms and concerns characteristic of disordered eating (EAT-26 Self-Test). This was used to determine the amount of risk faced by each participant. The pressures questionnaire was used to determine what pressures each group …

The Impact Of European Elections On Their Stock Markets, Andrew Lafortune

Honors Projects in Finance

This paper seeks to provide insight on changes in the European political landscape and how these changes may affect the financial markets in Europe. By analyzing market trends in eight different European countries—Belgium, Austria, France, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, Switzerland and Greece—since 1990, this paper attempts to identify any significant relationships between the results of an election and the performances of the major stock indices of these countries. By comparing country index returns starting one hundred days before and ending one hundred days after each election date to a global index, this paper explores the amount of risk in each …

Beyond Income: What Else Predicts Very Low Food Security Among Children?, Patricia M. Anderson, Kristin F. Butcher, Hilary W. Hoynes, Diane Whitmore Schanzenbach

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

We examine characteristics and correlates of households in the United States that are most likely to have children at risk of inadequate nutrition – those that report very low food security (VLFS) among their children. Using 11 years of the Current Population Survey, plus data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and American Time Use Survey, we describe these households in great detail with the goal of trying to understand how these households differ from households without such severe food insecurity. While household income certainly plays an important role in determining VLFS among children, we find that even …

Modality Switching Within Conditional Reasoning, Nathaniel A. Young Apr 2014

Modality Switching Within Conditional Reasoning, Nathaniel A. Young

Student Honors Theses

The format in which humans represent knowledge is still not known. Two perspectives that explain the way in which humans represent knowledge are the amodal and modal perspectives. Recently. a modality switching effect was found during a property verification task. The modality switching effect is a delay in response time in verifying the property of an object in a modality that is different from the previously verified property of a different object. This effect is often presented as evidence to support the modal perspective, but it has not been found in a task more complex than property verification. The goal …

Profiling Hope, Teresa Noewer

Senior Honors Projects

Boys Hope Girls Hope (BHGH) is a nonprofit organization that strives to help students in middle school and high school build character and reach their full potential in the classroom. This organization accepts 18 students into their residential program who are bright, motivated, and who come from challenging household situations and provides them with an education and living accommodations throughout their high school career. BHGH created a new program in 2007 called Hope Prep that allowed more students to participate, and therefore created a need for a more efficient way to sort through the larger number of applicants. Since BHGH …

Moving Beyond The Welfare Standard Of Psychological Well-Being For Nonhuman Primates: The Case Of Chimpanzees, John P. Gluck Apr 2014

Moving Beyond The Welfare Standard Of Psychological Well-Being For Nonhuman Primates: The Case Of Chimpanzees, John P. Gluck

Experimentation Collection

Since 1985, the US Animal Welfare Act and Public Health Service policy have required that researchers using nonhuman primates in biomedical and behavioral research develop a plan ‘‘for a physical environment adequate to promote the psychological well-being of primates.’’ In pursuing this charge, housing attributes such as social companionship, opportunities to express species-typical behavior, suitable space for expanded locomotor activity, and nonstressful relationships with laboratory personnel are dimensions that have dominated the discussion. Regulators were careful not to direct a specific set of prescriptions (i.e., engineering standards) for the attainment of these goals, but to leave the design of the …

Abolition Then And Now: Tactical Comparisons Between The Human Rights Movement And The Modern Nonhuman Animal Rights Movement In The United States, Corey Lee Wrenn

Animal Rights Movement Collection

This article discusses critical comparisons between the human and nonhuman abolitionist movements in the United States. The modern nonhuman abolitionist movement is, in some ways, an extension of the anti-slavery movement of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the ongoing human Civil Rights movement. As such, there is considerable overlap between the two movements, specifically in the need to simultaneously address property status and oppressive ideology. Despite intentional appropriation of terminology and numerous similarities in mobilization efforts, there has been disappointingly little academic discussion on this relationship. There are significant contentions regarding mobilization and goal attainment in the human abolitionist …

From Death To Near-Death: The Fate Of Serious Youthful Offenders After Roper V. Simmons, Christopher A. Mallett Apr 2014

From Death To Near-Death: The Fate Of Serious Youthful Offenders After Roper V. Simmons, Christopher A. Mallett

Social Work Faculty Publications

The United States juvenile death penalty was abolished in 2005 when the Supreme Court, in Roper v. Simmons, found this punishment to be cruel and unusual and in violation of the Constitution’s Eighth Amendment.1 This decision was the final step in ending the death sentence for those under the age of eighteen. While this sentence is no longer an option for retributively-inclined states, many serious youthful offenders continue to meet similar, and in some ways, comparably difficult fates. These fates include the wholesale transfer of serious youthful offenders to the criminal courts2 and the subsequent incarceration of tens of …

Chat Reference: To Schedule Or Not To Schedule?, Michael Mungin

Libraries

Students in distance programs often have no way of visiting the physical reference desk to seek assistance from and engage in a reference interview with a librarian. Lack of access to this crucial research resource presents a major challenge to distance education. Luckily, chat reference services, available through various products and software, are becoming an increasingly common service offered by libraries. This technology allows the students and librarians to work together in real time to achieve the back and forth dialogue required in reference interviews. Unfortunately, the literature on creating and providing a chat reference service does not delve deeply …

Guest Introduction To The 40th Anniversary Issue: Manifestos, Web Pages, And Continuities In Criticality, Ed Mcluskie

Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations

A decade ago, JCI marked its 30th anniversary with a tracing of mastheads (McLuskie, 2004) once manifesto-like in character, but less so as the journal moved through its first three decades. Now, at its 40th year, the word “Inquiry” in the journal’s title still announces an orientation that aims beyond method. Whether discussing the field and its problems or offering alternative modes of inquiry, JCI has a reputation as a space for fresh academic air (more on the history, importance, and perennial vulnerability of that reputation in a moment).
