Assessing Impacts Of Time Use On Children's Physical Fitness In Relation To Risk For Obesity And Diabetes, Jessica Guo
PSU Transportation Seminars
Researchers from the transportation, planning and health fields share the common goal of promoting physically active lifestyle. One challenge that researchers often face is the measurement of physical activity, particularly among children. This is because the sporadic nature of children’s physical activity patterns makes it difficult to recall and quantify such activities. Additionally, children’s lower cognitive functioning compared to adults prevents them from accurately recalling their activities. This presentation will describe the design and application of a novel self-report instrument - the Graphs for Recalling Activity Time (GReAT) - for measuring children’s activity time use patterns. The instrument was applied …

Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission: An Analysis Of Sentence Fairness And Prison Population, Andrew J. Morley
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
This article and accompanying poster observe the success of the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission by viewing the consistency of prison sentences and rate of prison population growth after implementation. I hypothesize that the sentecing guidelines allow for fairer sentences and manageable prison capacities. Prior research has shown the success of the determinate sentencing system. The research begins in 1979 with the Commission's conception. The results of research demonstrates that the Guidelines do in fact achieve consistency in sentencing and manageability in prison capacities.

Cities And Sustainability: Polycentric Action And Multilevel Governance, George C. Homsy, Mildred E. Warner
Cities And Sustainability: Polycentric Action And Multilevel Governance, George C. Homsy, Mildred E. Warner
Public Administration Faculty Scholarship
Polycentric theory, as applied to sustainability policy adoption, contends that municipalities will act independently to provide public services that protect the environment. Our multilevel regression analysis of survey responses from 1,497 municipalities across the United States challenges that notion. We find that internal drivers of municipal action are insufficient. Lower policy adoption is explained by capacity constraints. More policymaking occurs in states with a multilevel governance framework supportive of local sustainability action. Contrary to Fischel’s homevoter hypothesis, we find large cities and rural areas show higher levels of adoption than suburbs (possibly due to free riding within a metropolitan region).

Identification And The 2013 Hyundai Team Super Bowl Commercial, Jack M. Ghizoni
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
The Hyundai-Team commercial was released during the 2013 Super Bowl on February 3rd, 2013. The theme of this commercial is very team orientated in that, being a part of a team is more than just competing against others but includes the reliability, loyalty, and stability that you get from your teammates. In this commercial, the Hyundai Santa Fe is indeed a part of the team that is insuring these qualities to its owners. Clearly, Hyundai is trying to gather up a team of its own and give the audience a chance to be a part of this magnificent, …

Mindfulness And The College Transition: The Efficacy Of A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Intervention In Fostering Adjustment Among First-Year Students, Taylor R. Ramler
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
Within recent years, there has been a marked proliferation in the interest in and relevant literature pertaining to the practice of mindfulness. This study sought to augment this knowledge base through an examination of the efficacy of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention in fostering adjustment among first-year college students. Fifty-six (N=56) first-year participants from two Midwestern liberal arts institutions partook in the study. Experimental participants (n=29) completed an eight-week MBSR intervention conducted by a qualified instructor. Control participants (n=27) did not receive mindfulness instruction. Adjustment indices were gathered using the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ), providing individual scores …

Special Collections and University Archives Legacy Finding Aids: All Items
On 13 September 2013, William C. Ballard—a former member of the Fisher & Sauls law firm—deposited a collection of personal correspondence and other documents related to the management and operation of the Times Publishing Company with Special Collections and University Archives, Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. These documents, held by the firm since approximately 15 June 1978, the date of Nelson Poynter’s death, cover the years primarily from 1936 through 1959 and may have been helpful in establishing intra-familial relationships regarding the St. Petersburg Times [now Tampa Bay Times], St. Petersburg Evening Independent, and other publishing and operational entities of the …

Earl Weir, a longtime St. Petersburg resident who now lives outside of the area, originally donated materials related to his family’s history and the Tampa Bay region in 2012. Many items from the original accession were digitized versions of home movies, and they were received in multiple installments. Some artifacts were also included in the original accession, such as an electric clock from Webb’s City, a longtime department store located in St. Petersburg. Mr. Weir donated a second accession of items in early 2014 while visiting the Poynter Library. This finding aid enumerates materials from this second accession only, comprised …

Effects Of Practice Type And Task Difficulty On Visuospatial Performance, Soniya Assudani
Effects Of Practice Type And Task Difficulty On Visuospatial Performance, Soniya Assudani
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The importance of visuospatial skills for every day survival is highly evident. Practice is a mechanism by which visuospatial skills can be enhanced. The current study examined how general practice, different types of practice, and levels of task difficulty affect visuospatial performance. Seventy-eight undergraduate students participated in the Block Design Task (extracted from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale) in which they had to construct a design with the blocks based on a printed image. Prior to completing 40 test trials, participants received opportunities for motor (physical), mental (visualization), or modeling (observational) practice. Half of the trials contained easy designs, and …

Explaining The Trend Toward English-Language Programming In Hispanic-American Television: Why Now?, Elizabeth L. Levine
Explaining The Trend Toward English-Language Programming In Hispanic-American Television: Why Now?, Elizabeth L. Levine
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses
The United States Hispanic population is growing at an exponential rate. There are now more than 100 television networks in the U.S. catering to Hispanic audiences–mostly in Spanish. Now, contrary to logic, more English-language programming for Hispanic-Americans is making its way to television. With immigration from Hispanic countries on the decline, most of the growth among the U.S. Hispanic population comes from Hispanics born in the U.S. Hispanic-Americans growing up in the U.S. are more likely to grow up speaking English and consuming media in English. The U.S. Hispanic audience is expected to reach one-third of the total U.S. population …

A Periodized, 52-Week Training Program For A Women’S Ice Hockey Team, Katie Schwab
A Periodized, 52-Week Training Program For A Women’S Ice Hockey Team, Katie Schwab
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
The job of a strength and conditioning professional is to improve athletic performance. A periodized training program can enhance athletic performance while minimizing the risk of injuries. Designing training programs to maximize performance for ice hockey players can be difficult because ice hockey is one of the most physically demanding sports. All of the components of fitness are important in hockey: muscle endurance, strength, and power, and high oxidative and glycolytic capacities. The purpose of this project was to examine the muscular and cardiovascular demands of a women’s ice hockey team and design a 52-week, periodized training program to facilitate …
