This course is designed to introduce college students to the current significance of the Arts in American civil society. We will begin by examining the concepts of civil society and social capital and their correlations to social well-being. The robustness of voluntary associations is a distinguishing characteristic of American civil society. It is a basis for how we carry out democracy and maintain our common resources. Social capital is the embedded value of our social connections with others. Our mutual trust and reciprocity contributes to the health, wealth, tolerance, and efficient governance of society. We will explore the unique ability …

The Relationship Between Oil Price And The Algerian Exchange Rate, Abderrezak Benhabib, Si Mohammed Kamel, Samir Maliki May 2014

The Relationship Between Oil Price And The Algerian Exchange Rate, Abderrezak Benhabib, Si Mohammed Kamel, Samir Maliki

Topics in Middle Eastern and North African Economies

The goal of this study is to investigate the relationship between oil price and the nominal US Dollar/Algerian Dinar exchange rate through an empirical analysis using a VAR Model (Vector Autoregressive Model) upon monthly data for the period 2003-2013. Results show that a cointegration relationship is not detected between the oil and exchange rate in Algeria. However, the estimation of a VAR model indicates that a 1% increase in oil price would tend to depreciate Algerian Dinar against US Dollar by nearly 0.35%. This negative impact emphasizes how the Algerian dinar is a non-oil currency and explains how the foreign …

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Emotion Dysregulation And Psychophysiological Reactivity Under Emotional Provocation, Tanya S. Watford May 2014

The Impact Of Mindfulness On Emotion Dysregulation And Psychophysiological Reactivity Under Emotional Provocation, Tanya S. Watford

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

The present study employed physiological measures and a working memory task in addition to self-report measures to seek a better understanding of the relationship between brief mindfulness training and the experience and regulation of emotion. Seventy undergraduate students at a small southern state university completed baseline measures of trait mindfulness and emotion regulation before experiencing a 15-minute recording (mindfulness or control), and then completing a state mindfulness measure. Participants then experienced an emotion induction (positive or negative), before completing state emotion dysregulation and affect measures, and then completing a working memory task, finishing with the state mindfulness measure again. Physiological …

Matters Of The Heart?: The Role Of Risk Regulation, Attachment Style, Self-Monitoring And Self-Esteem In Romantic Relationships, Brittany A. Joyce May 2014

Matters Of The Heart?: The Role Of Risk Regulation, Attachment Style, Self-Monitoring And Self-Esteem In Romantic Relationships, Brittany A. Joyce

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

In the context of romantic relationships, risk regulation refers to one’s constant struggle to balance connecting with one’s partner and protecting oneself from rejection (Murray, Holmes, & Collins, 2006). As previous research failed to directly assess the interrelationships between risk regulation, self-esteem, attachment style, and self-monitoring, the present study sought to determine how these constructs interconnect to affect patterns of connection and protection in romantic relationships. Results indicated that high and low self-monitors differ in levels of connection and protection in romantic relationships, specifically in terms of need to belong, and relationship anxiety. Attachment style also affected connection and protection …

The Impact Of Childhood Experiences On Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Functioning: Does The Past Dictate The Future?, Anna W. Vandevender May 2014

The Impact Of Childhood Experiences On Intrapersonal And Interpersonal Functioning: Does The Past Dictate The Future?, Anna W. Vandevender

USC Aiken Psychology Theses

Childhood experiences of maltreatment are related to interpersonal difficulties in childhood (Pettit, Dodge, & Brown, 1988) and adulthood (Messman-Moore & Coates, 2007; Varia & Abidin, 1999; Busby, Walker, & Holman, 2011). However, most studies have examined the effects of maltreatment on interpersonal functioning (Messman-Moore & Coates, 2007; Busby, Walker, & Holman, 2011) within the context of romantic relationships (Hazan & Shaver, 1987; Feeney & Noller, 1990). Thus, the present study examined the impact childhood maltreatment and neglect has on later intrapersonal functioning and interpersonal interactions and whether gender differences emerge therein. Results indicated maltreated individuals initiate relationships less often and …

Intrahousehold Inequality, Costas Meghir May 2014

Intrahousehold Inequality, Costas Meghir

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Studies of inequality often ignore resource allocation within the household. In doing so they miss an important element of the distribution of welfare that can vary dramatically depending on overall environmental and economic factors. Thus, measures of inequality that ignore intra household allocations are both incomplete and misleading. We discuss determinants of intra household allocation of resources and welfare. We show how the sharing rule, which characterizes the within household allocations, can be identified from data on household consumption and labor supply. We also argue that a measure based on estimates of the sharing rule is inadequate as an approach …

Connecting People And Place Prosperity: Workforce Development And Urban Planning In Scholarship And Practice, Greg Schrock

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

In recent years, the field of workforce development has emerged as a distinct area of policy and practice. While planning scholars have begun to engage with the workforce development field, its relevance and points of connection to planning scholarship remain underexplored. This article attempts to define the workforce development field by articulating its core concerns as well as its domains of practice and scholarship outside the planning field. The article locates workforce development within three stands of planning scholarship, concluding that workforce development represents an important bridge for planners between “place” and “people” prosperity within communities.

Improving And Monitoring The Microlending Program In Belize, Mark Mccallum May 2014

Improving And Monitoring The Microlending Program In Belize, Mark Mccallum

Finance Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper assesses the Microlending and Cayes to Business Programs within the Community Development in Belize Study Abroad Program at the University of Arkansas. The Microlending Program makes low-interest loans to small businesses primarily in Dangriga, Belize. Recently, the lending activity has expanded and concerns about repayment have increased. This paper proposes various improvements to maintain consistent loan repayment and healthy expansion of the Microlending Program. The most important ideas are to enhance social pressure on the borrowers and improve monitoring in-country after the loans have been disbursed. Cayes to Business, an educational program required for microloan applicants, is also …

Anthropology And Open Access, Jason B. Jackson, Ryan B. Anderson May 2014

Anthropology And Open Access, Jason B. Jackson, Ryan B. Anderson

Faculty Publications

While still largely ignored by many anthropologists, open access (OA) has been a confusing and volatile center around which a wide range of contentious debates and vexing leadership dilemmas orbit. Despite widespread misunderstandings and honest differences of perspective on how and why to move forward, OA frameworks for scholarly communication are now part of the publishing ecology in which all active anthropologists work. Cultural Anthropology is unambiguously a leading journal in the field. The move to transition it toward a gold OA model represents a milestone for the iterative transformation of how cultural anthropologists, along with diverse fellow travelers, communicate …

Intra-Household Welfare, Costas Meghir May 2014

Intra-Household Welfare, Costas Meghir

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we develop an approach to measuring inequality and poverty that recognizes the fact that individuals within households may have both different preferences and differential access to resources. We argue that a measure based on estimates of the sharing rule is inadequate as an approach that seeks to understand how welfare is distributed in the population because it ignores public good and the allocation of time to market work, leisure and household production. We develop a money metric measure of welfare that accounts for public goods (by using personalized prices) household production and for the allocation of time.

Revolutionizing The Revolution: An Examination Of Social Media's Role In The Egyptian Arab Spring, Needa A. Malik May 2014

Revolutionizing The Revolution: An Examination Of Social Media's Role In The Egyptian Arab Spring, Needa A. Malik

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

By asserting that no revolution occurs singularly, I propose that revolutions occur in a multiplicity. Within the framework of the Arab Spring Revolutions, another revolution has been occurring concurrently: a social media revolution. This revolution is taking place in the digital, social media age. It is a revolution that has been tweeted, facebooked, recorded, documented and shared instantaneously on platforms that obeys few lines of political sovereignty. Revolution and political action can now truly be shown from the perspective of the common citizen. Activists have discovered a greater platform for their voices to be distributed and causes promoted. The Arab …

Median Based Modified Ratio Estimators With Known Quartiles Of An Auxiliary Variable, Jambulingam Subramani, G Prabavathy May 2014

Median Based Modified Ratio Estimators With Known Quartiles Of An Auxiliary Variable, Jambulingam Subramani, G Prabavathy

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

New median based modified ratio estimators for estimating a finite population mean using quartiles and functions of an auxiliary variable are proposed. The bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimators are obtained and the mean squared error of the proposed estimators are compared with the usual simple random sampling without replacement (SRSWOR) sample mean, ratio estimator, a few existing modified ratio estimators, the linear regression estimator and median based ratio estimator for certain natural populations. A numerical study shows that the proposed estimators perform better than existing estimators; in addition, it is shown that the proposed median based …

On The Exponentiated Weibull Distribution For Modeling Wind Speed In South Western Nigeria, Olanrewaju I. Shittu, K A. Adepoju May 2014

On The Exponentiated Weibull Distribution For Modeling Wind Speed In South Western Nigeria, Olanrewaju I. Shittu, K A. Adepoju

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

One of the bases for assessment of wind energy potential for a specified region is the probability distribution of wind speed. Thus, appropriate and adequate specification of the probability distribution of wind speed becomes increasingly important. Several distributions have been proposed for describing wind distribution. Among the most popular distributions is the Weibull whose choice is due to its flexibility. An exponentiated Weibull distribution is proposed as an alternative to model wind speed data with a view to comparing it with the existing Weibull distribution. Results indicate that the proposed distribution outperforms the existing Weibull distribution for modeling wind speed …

Robust Regression Analysis For Non-Normal Situations Under Symmetric Distributions Arising In Medical Research, S S. Ganguly May 2014

Robust Regression Analysis For Non-Normal Situations Under Symmetric Distributions Arising In Medical Research, S S. Ganguly

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In medical research, while carrying out regression analysis, it is usually assumed that the independent (covariates) and dependent (response) variables follow a multivariate normal distribution. In some situations, the covariates may not have normal distribution and instead may have some symmetric distribution. In such a situation, the estimation of the regression parameters using Tiku’s Modified Maximum Likelihood (MML) method may be more appropriate. The method of estimating the parameters is discussed and the applications of the method are illustrated using real sets of data from the field of public health.

Global Health And The Law, Lawrence O. Gostin, Devi Sridhar May 2014

Global Health And The Law, Lawrence O. Gostin, Devi Sridhar

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The last two decades have brought revolutionary changes in global health, driven by popular concern over AIDS, novel influenzas, and maternal mortality. Given the rapid globalization that is a defining feature of today’s world, the need for a robust system of global health law has never been greater. Global health law has been defined as the legal norms, processes, and institutions designed primarily to attain the highest possible standard of physical and mental health for the world’s population. Global health law is not an organized legal system, with a unified treaty monitoring body, such as the World Trade Organization. There …

The salvage yard represents the final waypoint in the cradle-to-grave cycle of the automobile. Residual amounts of petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and acids used in automobiles can be extremely harmful to human health and the environment if not managed correctly. The purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which minority populations were exposed to the hazards of the auto salvage industry. Census data for population, income, race/ethnicity, sex, and age were organized using ArcGIS software. Population demographics were analyzed in the areas surrounding 98 auto salvage yards found in Philadelphia and Adams Counties, Pennsylvania. In Philadelphia County, …
