Future Work: Denver Metropolitan Area Jobs In A Globalizing Economy, Sharon Gabel
Future Work: Denver Metropolitan Area Jobs In A Globalizing Economy, Sharon Gabel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the past twenty years, globalization has had both observable and intangible impacts on business and labor markets at the local level, that are of critical importance to communities and the people who inhabit them. While impacts of global economic change on local labor markets have been anticipated, there is little insight in the research literature into the empirical dynamics of the interrelationship between global economic change and local labor markets. This study examined the impacts of globalization on local labor markets through three lenses: (1) quantitative analysis of employment change in the Denver Metropolitan Region local labor market, (2) …
Pragmatic And Cultural Considerations For Deception Detection In Asian Languages, Victoria L. Rubin
Pragmatic And Cultural Considerations For Deception Detection In Asian Languages, Victoria L. Rubin
FIMS Publications
In hopes of sparking a discussion, I argue for much needed research on automated deception detection in Asian languages. The task of discerning truthful texts from deceptive ones is challenging, but a logical sequel to opinion mining. I suggest that applied computational linguists pursue broader interdisciplinary research on cultural differences and pragmatic use of language in Asian cultures, before turning to detection methods based on a primarily Western (English-centric) worldview. Deception is fundamentally human, but how do various cultures interpret and judge deceptive behavior?

Not All On The Same Page: E-Book Adoption And Technology Exploration By Seniors, Anabel Quan-Haase, Kim Martin, Kathleen Schreurs
FIMS Publications
This paper aims to understand the adoption of e-books and e-readers by persons aged sixty and above. This includes an investigation into where seniors are in the stages of e-book adoption. Method: Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in a mid-size city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Analysis: Interviews were transcribed, and coded using grounded theory. Rogers's model of the innovation-decision process was used to inform the data analysis process. Results: The results show three key factors affecting adoption: longing for materiality, technology confidence, and technology exploration. While seniors are interested in e-books and e-readers, see many benefits to their use, …

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications
OBJECTIVE: Understanding cognition mediated by the striatum can clarify cognitive deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD). Previously, we claimed that dorsal striatum (DS) mediates cognitive flexibility. To refute the possibility that variation in cognitive effort confounded our observations, we reexamined our data to dissociate cognitive flexibility from effort. PD provides a model for exploring DS-mediated functions. In PD, dopamine-producing cells supplying DS are significantly degenerated. DS-mediated functions are impaired off and improved on dopamine replacement medication. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can confirm striatum-mediated functions.
METHODS: Twenty-two PD patients, off-on dopaminergic medication, and 22 healthy age-matched controls performed a number selection …
The Conditional Effect Of Term Limits On Electoral Activities, Julie Vandusky-Allen
The Conditional Effect Of Term Limits On Electoral Activities, Julie Vandusky-Allen
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this article, I examine how term limits affect the amount of time that legislators focus on constituency service and fundraising. I use data from the 2002 U.S. State Legislative Survey conducted by Carey, Niemi, Powell, and Moncrief to provide support for my hypotheses. The results from the data analysis suggest that in the presence of term limits, legislators with long-term career goals in politics spend less time on constituency service activities and more time on fundraising with their caucus. For legislators with short-term career goals in politics, there is very little evidence to suggest that term limits have an …

How Quickly We Forget: Comments On “A Historical Analysis Of Evidence-Based Practice In Social Work: The Unfinished Journey Toward An Empirically Grounded Profession”, Anne E. Fortune
Social Welfare Faculty Scholarship
The Social Service Review article, “A Historical Analysis of Evidence-Based Practice in Social Work: The Unfinished Journey toward an Empirically Grounded Profession,” by Nathanael J. Okpych and James L-H Yu, is the kind of article that makes you sit up and say, “That’s revisionist history!” “What new ideas!” “I wish I had written that!” “But that’s not what I know!” Such an ambivalent response suggests that it is a groundbreaking article or at least one that will stimulate discussion and reassessment of what we know. Constructivism suggests both that there are many legitimate worldviews and that it is worth knowing …

Econtent Quarterly - Volume 1, Issue 4, Sue Polanka, Mirela Roncevic
University Libraries' Staff Publications
Welcome to Issue 4 of eContent Quarterly. The publication of this volume marks the end of the first full year since we launched the journal at the American Library Association in Chicago, so it seems fitting to take a quick trip down memory lane and revisit the topics explored since June 2013. These included, among others, the importance of metadata, the versatility of children’s apps, and the benefits of user-centered design. Previous issues also provided thorough, introductory overviews of e-formats and e-reading devices for librarians overwhelmed by the complexities of the e-book market. They also featured case studies pointing …

Modification Of Hansen-Hurwitz’S Estimators For Negatively Correlated Variates, Jonathan A. Ikughur
Modification Of Hansen-Hurwitz’S Estimators For Negatively Correlated Variates, Jonathan A. Ikughur
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
Most estimators in probability proportional to size (PPS) with replacement (WR) sampling design are defined for positively correlated variables. The literature on estimators involving negatively correlated variates is underdeveloped. This study utilized the law of inverse proportion to derive selection probabilities to modify the Hansen-Hurwitz’s estimator for use when negatively correlated variables are encountered in surveys. The suggested estimator is unbiased and could perform better than other estimators when information conveyed by correlation coefficient is used.
Structural Breaks, Cointegration And Demand For Money In Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa, Olorunsola E. Olowofeso, Stephen O. U. Uyaebo, Ibrahim Adamu, Abiodun S. Bada
Structural Breaks, Cointegration And Demand For Money In Nigeria, Sani I. Doguwa, Olorunsola E. Olowofeso, Stephen O. U. Uyaebo, Ibrahim Adamu, Abiodun S. Bada
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper estimates the money demand function in Nigeria in the aftermath of the recent global financial crisis and examines whether its underlying properties has changed over the years. Specifically, the existence of a stable long-run demand for money function during the period 1991:Q1-2013:Q4, while accounting for the possibility of structural breaks is investigated. The Gregory-Hansen residual based test for cointegration detected both intercept and regime shifts in 2007:Q1 as the null of no cointegration is rejected at 1 per cent significance level, indicating that long run relationship exists between real money supply, real income, real monetary policy rate, exchange …
The Relationships Of Inflationary Trend, Agricultural Productivity And Economic Growth In Nigeria, Oyakhilomen Oyinbo, Grace Z. Rekwot
The Relationships Of Inflationary Trend, Agricultural Productivity And Economic Growth In Nigeria, Oyakhilomen Oyinbo, Grace Z. Rekwot
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study investigates the links existing between inflationary trend, agricultural productivity and economic growth in Nigeria using time series data spanning from 1970 to 2011. The results of the analyses indicate a unidirectional causality from inflationary trend to agricultural productivity, unidirectional causality from agricultural productivity to economic growth with no causality between inflationary trend and economic growth. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Central Bank of Nigeria should pay more attention to the trend of inflation and pursue policies that will ensure single digit inflation.

Developing Banking System Stability Index For Nigeria, Angela Sere-Ejembi, Ini S. Udom, Audu Salihu, Ngozi V. Atoi, Baba N. Yaaba
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study constructed a banking system stability index (BSSI) for Nigeria, using a combination of financial soundness indicators and macro-fundamentals. It applied statistical and Conference Board Methodology normalisation processes on Nigeria’s banking and macroeconomic data from 2007Q1 to 2012Q2. The resultant index traced fairly well the episodes of crisis in the system over the study period. Hence, the BSSI is capable of acting as an early warning mechanism of signaling fragility. It could, therefore, be used as a complimentary regulatory policy tool to detect potential threat to enable monetary authorities take timely pre-emptive policy measures to avert crisis.
Modeling And Forecasting Currency In Circulation For Liquidity Management In Nigeria, Alvan Ikoku
Modeling And Forecasting Currency In Circulation For Liquidity Management In Nigeria, Alvan Ikoku
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper presents forecasts of currency in circulation prepared for liquidity management at the Central Bank of Nigeria. Forecasts were produced using ARIMA, ARIMA with structural variables, VAR and VEC models. The performance of the forecasts was then evaluated under a rolling forecast scenario, where the estimation sample is augmented by one observation and the forecast sample is brought forward. The evaluation of the forecasts was based on average performance over a number of rolling forecasts. We found that the most accurate models were mixed models with structural as well as ARIMA components, augmented by seasonal and dummy variables. We …

Measuring Respondent Burden In Nigeria: A Case Study Of Central Bank Of Nigeria Enterprise Surveys, Ibrahim Adamu, Ismaila S. Sabi, Sani Bawa
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper uses diffusion indices, percentages and reported time spent to measure the respondent burden in survey of foreign assets and liabilities (SOFAL) and business expectations survey (BES). The results show that respondents found it easy but time consuming to complete the SOFAL questionnaire with an average of 24 hours spent in collecting information and over 2 hours to fill the questionnaire. In contrast, respondents found it much easier and quicker to complete the BES questionnaire, spending an average of 47 minutes to collect relevant information from their records and another 36 minutes to complete the questionnaire. The paper identified …
Foreign Trade-Economic Growth Nexus: Evidence From Nigeria, Nosakhare L. Arodoye, Milton A. Iyoha
Foreign Trade-Economic Growth Nexus: Evidence From Nigeria, Nosakhare L. Arodoye, Milton A. Iyoha
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study examines the nexus between foreign trade and economic growth in Nigeria using quarterly time-series data for 1981Q1 through 2010Q4. In order to fully account for feedbacks, a vector autoregressive model is utilized. The results show that there is a stable, long- run relationship between foreign trade and economic growth. The variance decomposition results show that the predominant sources of Nigeria economic growth variation are due largely to “own shocks” and foreign trade innovations. The study therefore recommends adoption of trade expansion policies as a means of accelerating economic growth in Nigeria.

Destination Sectors And Originating Economies Of Nigeria’S Private Foreign Assets And Liabilities In 2012, Sani I. Doguwa, Mohammed M, Tumala, Isaiah Olufemi Ajibola
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
The 2013 survey of foreign assets and liabilities of enterprises in Nigeria was conducted to determine destination sectors of foreign private capital flows and economies where such investments originate. The survey covered 649 large establishments in Nigeria with 87.4 per cent response rate. The cross border transactions/investments of the respondents during 2011 and 2012 indicate total foreign claims on the Nigerian economy as at end 2012 rising to N16, 790.78 billion from N13, 647.19 billion recorded in 2011. Of this total, 98.1per cent came in the form of direct investments, while portfolio investments and other capital flows accounted for 1.1 …

Behaviors That Predict Personality Components In Adult Free-Ranging Tibetan Macaques (Macaca Thibetana), Alexander J. Pritchard, Lori K. Sheeran, Kara I. Gabriel, Jin-Hua Li, Ronald S. Wagner
Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship
To further the potential for applied personality studies, we present a methodology for assessing personality in nonhuman animals without a priori assumptions, using behavioral measures to discriminate personality survey results. Our study group consisted of 12 free-ranging, provisioned, adult Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) at the Valley of the Wild Monkeys, China. We asked familiar Chinese park guards and scientists to rate each of the 12 macaques using 27-item personality surveys. We also recorded behavioral observations (> 100 hrs) from August–September, 2012. The personality surveys showed reliability in 22 of the items that were then utilized in a principal component analysis …

Continuous Data Integration For Land Use And Transportation Planning And Modeling, Liming Wang, Kihong Kim
TREC Final Reports
There is an urgent need for improved models that address the interdependencies between land use and transportation, and considerable new work is underway to develop such models in Oregon and elsewhere. These models and planning practices to integrate land use into the process, however, require the integration of massive amounts of land use data that is messy and incomplete. There have been considerable advances in the treatment of such data problems in other domains, drawing on data mining and machine-learning techniques to address issues in various domains. To date, however, little systematic effort has applied these technological advances to the …

The Silent Crisis: Including Latinos And Why It Matters, Representation In Executive Positions, Boards, And Commissions In The City Governments Of Boston, Chelsea, And Somerville, Miren Uriarte, James Jennings, Jen Douglas
Human Services Faculty Publication Series
The Silent Crisis: Involving Latinos in Decision-Making & Why Latino Representation Matters provides a measure of the economic, social, and political inclusion of Latinos at mid-decade in three cities of the Commonwealth where about one fourth of the state’s Latino population lives. Often wrongly referred to as a “new population,” Latinos have been present in Massachusetts since the end of the 19th century, arriving in large numbers beginning in the 1960s and 1970s and growing to nearly 630,000 persons (9.6% of the population) by 2010. That same year, they accounted for 62.1% of the population of Chelsea, 17.5% of the …
In Search Of Women’S Full Inclusion: A Case Study Of The Institute For Inclusive Security’S Advocacy For Women’S Inclusion In Sudan And South Sudan’S Cooperation Agreements, Anna Tonelli
Capstone Collection
Over the past nearly two decades, efforts to increase women’s inclusion in peacebuilding have grown exponentially as more research has proven that women’s participation leads to more sustainable peace processes. Yet women continue to be the marginalized from all levels of official processes including negotiation, drafting of resolutions, and implementing agreements. Nowhere is this more exemplary that in the efforts for peace between Sudan and South Sudan. The Cooperation Agreement, signed in September 2012 offered yet another opportunity to engage women. However, once more the processes excluded them from the table. In an effort to finally convince policymakers that women’s …
