Critical Junctures, Catalysts, And Democratic Consolidation In Turkey, Ramazan Kilinc Jul 2014

Critical Junctures, Catalysts, And Democratic Consolidation In Turkey, Ramazan Kilinc

Political Science Faculty Publications

IN FEBRUARY 1997, THE TURKISH MILITARY INTERVENED in politics to protect secularism from the "rising Islamist threat." This inter- vention resulted in the toppling of the coalition government led by the Islamic-oriented Welfare Party (RP, Refah Partisi ). Many civil and political restrictions followed this intervention, including the closure of the RP by the Constitutional Court. Two years later, the Chief of Staff, Hüseyin Kivnkoģlu, stated that "the 28 February process," by which he meant the military-sanctioned political configuration, would continue for one thou- sand years if necessary.1 However, by 2012, only 15 years after the inter- vention, the military's …

The New Journalism And The Struggle For Interpretation, John J. Pauly Jul 2014

The New Journalism And The Struggle For Interpretation, John J. Pauly

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Scholarship in literary journalism often focuses on matters of technique and style, and on the ethical challenges of immersion reporting. In some contexts, however, literary journalism may also take on a sense of moral purpose, as when reporters assert the importance of their interpretations, or readers attribute special meaning to a particular style of writing. The New Journalism of the 1960s and 1970s offers a revealing example of how magazine and book publishing markets and writer–editor relations inevitably shape journalists’ interpretations and lend them a sense of social significance. The New Journalism did not stand alone and apart from the …

On Predicting Religion Labels In Microblogging Networks, Minh Thap Nguyen, Ee Peng Lim Jul 2014

On Predicting Religion Labels In Microblogging Networks, Minh Thap Nguyen, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Religious belief plays an important role in how people behave, influencing how they form preferences, interpret events around them, and develop relationships with others. Traditionally, the religion labels of user population are obtained by conducting a large scale census study. Such an approach is both high cost and time consuming. In this paper, we study the problem of predicting users' religion labels using their microblogging data. We formulate religion label prediction as a classification task, and identify content, structure and aggregate features considering their self and social variants for representing a user. We introduce the notion of representative user to …

The Internet Vs. The Nation-State: Prevention And Prosecution Challenges On The Internet In Republic Of Türkiyi, Ersin Elibol Jul 2014

The Internet Vs. The Nation-State: Prevention And Prosecution Challenges On The Internet In Republic Of Türkiyi, Ersin Elibol

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Social, economic, and technological developments are widely accepted as powerful forces that affect the role, power, and functions of nation-states. Being one of the most influential technological developments in the recent decades, the internet has come into prominence in this regard.

With the use of the Internet, the monopoly of media and information controlled by official ideologies, capitalist barons, or elites is seriously challenged. Consequently the power balance between individuals and authorities in the mass media and communication has been transformed in a significant way. Though their reliability may sometimes be questionable, the number and type of information resources has …

Lifetime Lexical Variation In Social Media, Lizi Liao, Jing Jiang, Ying Ding, Heyan Huang, Ee Peng Lim Jul 2014

Lifetime Lexical Variation In Social Media, Lizi Liao, Jing Jiang, Ying Ding, Heyan Huang, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As the rapid growth of online social media attracts a large number of Internet users, the large volume of content generated by these users also provides us with an opportunity to study the lexical variation of people of different ages. In this paper, we present a latent variable model that jointly models the lexical content of tweets and Twitter users’ ages. Our model inherently assumes that a topic has not only a word distribution but also an age distribution. We propose a Gibbs-EM algorithm to perform inference on our model. Empirical evaluation shows that our model can learn meaningful age-specific …

Unpacking East-West Differences In The Extent Of Self-Enhancement From The Perspective Of Face Versus Dignity Cultures, Hae In Lee, Angela K. Y. Leung, Young-Hoon Kim Jul 2014

Unpacking East-West Differences In The Extent Of Self-Enhancement From The Perspective Of Face Versus Dignity Cultures, Hae In Lee, Angela K. Y. Leung, Young-Hoon Kim

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The question of whether or not the need for self-enhancement is culturally universal has been a controversial issue in cultural psychology. Though there have been numerous studies arguing that East Asians also have the need for self-enhancement, the controversy remained. We contend that the field is ready to see a cohesive theory that integrates and explains when and why East Asians do and do not manifest their need for self-enhancement. In this paper, we provide the theoretical logics of and rationales behind face and dignity cultures as the new theoretical proxies that integrate and explain East Asians' self-enhancing behaviors, supplementing …

This study is conducted to develop a model that can be used to estimate the VAT revenue potential, tax gaps, and the impact of policy changes using the Input-Output Table. The amount of VAT revenue projection generated by this model is close to the VAT revenue realization. The result of this study shows that the VAT compliance rate is only around 53%. Improving VAT compliance rate would generate a higher impact on VAT revenue as compared with raising the VAT rate. On the other hand, removing all VAT exemptions, besides increasing the administrative burden, it could also reduce VAT revenue …

Interrelationships Between Sensation Seeking And Psychopathy, Casey S. Iwai Jul 2014

Interrelationships Between Sensation Seeking And Psychopathy, Casey S. Iwai

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Psychopathic and sensation seeking traits are often correlated; however, sensation seeking alone is not inherently pathological. This study seeks to investigate possible moderating variables between individuals who are high on sensation seeking but low on measures of psychopathic or antisocial traits. Specifically, a positive family environment is hypothesized to be a moderating variable in the development of psychopathic traits among high sensation seekers. A college student sample assessed for psychopathy, sensation seeking, and family functioning is used to test this hypothesis. Significant relationships between all three constructs were found. Similar to previous data, sensation seeking was found to correlate with …

The Many Faces Of Garner Interference, Devin Michael Burns Jul 2014

The Many Faces Of Garner Interference, Devin Michael Burns

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A series of speeded classification tasks proposed by Garner (1974) has become a well-entrenched method for identifying interactions between perceptual dimensions. The theory proposes that integral dimensions should produce a redundancy gain when a second dimension covaries perfectly with the attended dimension, and interference if the second dimension varies irrelevantly. This work questions the interpretation of such results as indicating interactive dimensions, reviewing independent models which naturally exhibit such effects. Furthermore, there are several methodological confounds which make the cause of Garner interference non-identifiable in the standard experimental context, the most serious of which is the conflation of changes in …

Youth with substance use disorders often also face mental health challenges. Two recent studies analyzed two different treatment approaches for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders: (1) a standardized therapy approach and (2) 12-step support groups, as modalities for effectively treating and continuing positive outcomes for young people with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues. The findings from these studies are summarized below.

Considering Sport Participation As A Source For Physical Activity Among Adolescents, Jennifer Pharr, Nancy L. Lough Jul 2014

Considering Sport Participation As A Source For Physical Activity Among Adolescents, Jennifer Pharr, Nancy L. Lough

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

BACKGROUND:

Studies have shown participation in sport is lower among girls than boys, decreases as students matriculate through high school, is lowest among Black and Hispanic girls and has a positive relationship with SES. With sport recognized as a contributor to physical activity and health in adolescents, consideration of diminishing rates of participation appears warranted. The purpose of this study was to identify patterns related to differences in self-reported sport participation between genders, ethnic groups, grades and SES.

METHODS:

This study was a cross-sectional, secondary analysis of data collected for a sport interest survey. All students in grades 8-11 attending …

Domestic Violence Victims - An Examination Of Advocates' Experiences And Impact On Services, Tanya M. Grant Jul 2014

Domestic Violence Victims - An Examination Of Advocates' Experiences And Impact On Services, Tanya M. Grant

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

This qualitative study examines advocates’ phenomenological experiences with victims of domestic violence, specifically whether advocates’ personal biases impede the delivery of services to victims. Agencies and shelters in the communities that serve victims of domestic violence are an invaluable resource; however, if advocates are not providing appropriate services, victims can often find themselves in a more traumatic state. Ten domestic violence advocates throughout the State of Connecticut were interviewed and asked a series of questions pertaining directly to their day-to-day roles. The study also examined their attitudes about domestic violence, their perceptions of the work they do, and whether or …

The Development Of Contour Processing: Evidence From Physiology And Psychophysics, Gemma Taylor, Daniel Hipp, Alecia Moser, Kelly Dickerson, Peter Gerhardstein Jul 2014

The Development Of Contour Processing: Evidence From Physiology And Psychophysics, Gemma Taylor, Daniel Hipp, Alecia Moser, Kelly Dickerson, Peter Gerhardstein

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Object perception and pattern vision depend fundamentally upon the extraction of contours from the visual environment. In adulthood, contour or edge-level processing is supported by the Gestalt heuristics of proximity, collinearity, and closure. Less is known, however, about the developmental trajectory of contour detection and contour integration. Within the physiology of the visual system, long-range horizontal connections in V1 and V2 are the likely candidates for implementing these heuristics. While post-mortem anatomical studies of human infants suggest that horizontal interconnections reach maturity by the second year of life, psychophysical research with infants and children suggests a considerably more protracted development. …

Panel data of 26 districts in West Java, Indonesia, was used to analyze the determinant factors of junior secondary school enrollment rate. The study shows that GRDP per capita and education level of the household head positively influence junior secondary enrollment rate, in contrast poverty rate and number of child labour had negative impact. This study suggests that government should increase local revenue to enable the people to have sufficient income for attending school, especially for the poor. The …

A Domino Effect From Fairness To Online Customer Loyalty, Tuyet Mai Nguyen, Phong Tuan Nham Jul 2014

A Domino Effect From Fairness To Online Customer Loyalty, Tuyet Mai Nguyen, Phong Tuan Nham

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Distributive fairness, procedural fairness, and interactional fairness are often researched together in many previous studies. However, in order to explore the power of fairness, the second-order fairness needs to be created to find the way to customer loyalty. An online survey was developed and distributed in Vietnam. Seven hundred fifty-eight questionnaires were completed and analyzed using a two-step methodology (including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling). The results of the study showed that there is the domino effect to customer loyalty, which departs from fairness, with trust and customer satisfaction as two mediators.

The Philippine Cybercrime Prevention Act Of 2012: To Protect Or Destroy?, James Keith C. Heffron

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Relatively new breeds of technology-related felonies called “cybercrimes” have proven to be a bane to different sectors of society, especially to business. The glaring damaging effects that it has caused to different business industries cannot anymore be ignored. However, is the Philippines adequately protected? Are its present laws sufficient to tackle the prongs of this blight? On the contrary, are these laws too myopically focused on eliminating cybercrime that certain freedoms have been overlooked, or worse, compromised? The aim of this paper is to essentially give an overview of the current protection and its effects on our basic rights. A …

Explaining Nuclear Energy Pursuance: A Comparison Of The United States, Germany, And Japan, Lauren Emily Mckee

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Energy is critical to the functioning of the global economy and seriously impacts global security as well. What factors influence the extent to which countries will pursue nuclear energy in their overall mix of energy approaches? This dissertation explores this critical question by analyzing the nuclear energy policies of the United States, Germany and Japan. Rather than citizen opposition or proximity to nuclear disasters, it seems that a country's access to other resources through natural endowments or trading relationships offers the best explanation for nuclear energy pursuance.

Communication, Romantic Reconciliation, And Emerging Adulthood: A Relational Dialectics Study, Ashley M. Poole

Communication & Theatre Arts Theses

Building on the extant research of on-again/off-again (on-off) romantic relationships, the current thesis focused on building upon past findings by utilizing a unique theoretical methodology in an emerging demographic. A sample of 22 emergent adult (ages 18-29) participants who were currently in or had recently experienced an on-off relationship completed face-to-face interviews discussing communicative processes during romantic reconciliation. The primary purpose of this thesis was to identify and define discursive struggles found within on-off relationships during reconciliation attempts, and understand how they are used between partners to give meaning to the terms "on" and "off" as a precursor to restructuring …
