An Analysis And Cross-Battery Assessment Of The Discrepancy Model For Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities In School-Aged Children, Matthew Mcenroe
An Analysis And Cross-Battery Assessment Of The Discrepancy Model For Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities In School-Aged Children, Matthew Mcenroe
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to examine the current issues of the discrepancy model for identifying specific learning disabilities (SLD) and to perform a cross-battery assessment of the WISC-IV and WIAT-III intelligence batteries to determine if the discrepancy model is truly identifying the areas of concern for students being tested with these batteries or if it is misidentifying students leading to issues with classification and SLD identification. A review of the literature examined the history of the discrepancy model and cross-battery assessments as well as the current issues encompassing the discrepancy model and the application of both the discrepancy …

The Library Right There In My Hand: Determining User Needs For Mobile Services At A Medium-Sized Regional University, Paula Barnett-Ellis, Charlcie Pettway Vann
The Southeastern Librarian
While there have been a number of articles written about the need to provide mobile services for users, most have focused on large institutions. The authors, both librarians, wanted to find out how patrons of Houston Cole Library at Jacksonville State University (JSU), a small regional university, are using mobile devices and what mobile services they want or expect from the library. The possibility of finding the answers to these and other questions initiated the authors’ interest in surveying JSU students about their mobile device use. They invited 9,166 students and 1,053 employees to participate in the Mobile Devices Use …
Classifying Ethnographic Photographs From Tall Hisban: Toward An Improved Process For Analyzing Old Photographs From Jordan, Doneva Walker
Classifying Ethnographic Photographs From Tall Hisban: Toward An Improved Process For Analyzing Old Photographs From Jordan, Doneva Walker
Posters, Presentations, and Papers
The goal of this project is to come up with an improved process for classifying and analyzing hundreds of ethnographic photographs collected by LaBianca and his students during the original Heshbon Expedition (1971-1976) in Jordan. To this end expedition photographs are being scanned and entered into the computer using NVivo, a commercial qualitative data analysis software. As photographs are being entered they are being categorized using two frameworks: the food system observation guide originally proposed by LaBianca (1990) and the “seven little traditions” framework proposed more recently by LaBianca & Witzel (2007). The findings resulting from this experiment in categorization …

Foresighting Needs For Secure Societies “2035” – The Focus Roadmap And Its Implications For The Science And Practice Of Politics In Civil Security, Alexander Siedschlag, Andrea Jerković
Publications
There is more than the societal dimension of security: the societal creation of security. There are no effective technological solutions without acceptance and public participation. Security Research should consider significant social, cultural, ethical, legal, and political aspects of security from the very beginning, that is, not only in the implementation perspective and in terms of public acceptance and ascribed legitimacy. Civil security is thus becoming an own sub-field of public policy analysis, addressing societal security from a governance perspective. While “security governance” as such is not a new concept, it so far has mainly been applied to international security and …
A Statistical Approach To Syllabic Alliteration In The Odyssean Aeneid, Cory S. Robinson
A Statistical Approach To Syllabic Alliteration In The Odyssean Aeneid, Cory S. Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
William Clarke (1976) and Nathan Greenberg (1980) offer an objective framework for the study of alliteration in Latin poetry. However, their definition of alliteration as word initial sound repetition in a verse is inconsistent with the syllabic nature both of the device itself and also of the metrical structure. The present study reconciles this disparity in the first half of the Aeneid by applying a similar method to syllable initial sound repetition. A chi-square test for goodness-of-fit reveals that the distributions of the voiceless obstruents [p], [t], [k], [k^w], [f], and [s] and the sonorants [m], [n], [l], and [r] …

An Intonational Description Of Mayan Q'Eqchi', Karl Olaw Christian Wagner
An Intonational Description Of Mayan Q'Eqchi', Karl Olaw Christian Wagner
Theses and Dissertations
Q'eqchi' is one of many Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala, C.A. This study provides the first Tone Break and Indices (ToBI) transcription system (Silverman et al., 1992) labeling of Q'eqchi' within the Autosegmental-Metrical (AM) model of intonation (Liberman, 1975; Pierrehumbert, 1980; Ladd, 1996). As an exploratory study into the basic intonation patterns of the language, observations were made on a variety of phenomenon relating to the intonational structure and contour pattern of the language. Three native male speakers of Q'eqchi' each provided 75 spoken sentences designed to best observe the basic patterns of intonation in the language. Each spoken utterance …
The Amplification Of Deviance Following Police Contact: An Examination Of Individual And Neighborhood Factors Among A Sample Of Youth, Stephanie Ann Wiley
The Amplification Of Deviance Following Police Contact: An Examination Of Individual And Neighborhood Factors Among A Sample Of Youth, Stephanie Ann Wiley
Dissertations
Research indicates that police contact has many negative ramifications. Individuals who are stopped or arrested have fewer educational and employment opportunities, more deviant identities and attitudes, increased involvement with delinquent peers, and higher levels of delinquency. Less is known about whether these adverse consequences are universal or if they are more prevalent among some segments of the population. In this dissertation I draw on labeling theory to explore the effects of police contact for a sample of juveniles. According to labeling theory and its extensions, official labels such as those associated with police contact should lead to delinquency through three …

The Effects Of Quantitative And Qualitative Feedback On Speaking Fluency Development, Carlos Eduardo Dos Santos
The Effects Of Quantitative And Qualitative Feedback On Speaking Fluency Development, Carlos Eduardo Dos Santos
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the effect of two forms of feedback (qualitatitive and quantitative) on the development of the spoken fluency of English language learners. Sixty-five intermediate- high students from 22 countries and 11 native languages enrolled in an intensive English language program at the English Language Center, Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, participated.Throughout the 11-week course, the treatment group (consisting of 33 participants) received feedback on a weekly basis during speaking assessment tasks. The first form of feedback consisted of a quantitative analysis of their spoken fluency. This analysis, performed by PRAAT acoustic analysis software, measured several key features: …

Julius Rosenwald: A Review Of The Literature On His Motivations And Impact In Redefining Library Service In The South, Patrick Roughen
The Southeastern Librarian
This literature review also explores the influences in Julius Rosenwald’s life that inspired his philanthropic efforts. It could be said that Rosenwald’s generosity can be explained by his Jewish background; he was born a member of a group for whom discrimination and persecution had long tempered a sympathy for the oppressed. In his adult life, Rosenwald was imbued with the social justice teachings of famous Reform Rabbi Emil Hirsch (1851-1973), who ministered to him for many years at the Chicago Sinai Congregation (Ascoli, 2006). On the other hand, Rosenwald’s white, middle class background fails to explain how he was decades …
Deriving Statewide Freight Truck Flows From Global Positioning System (Gps) Data, Akbar Bakhshi Zanjani
Deriving Statewide Freight Truck Flows From Global Positioning System (Gps) Data, Akbar Bakhshi Zanjani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
An accelerated growth in the volume of freight shipped on Florida's highways has led to a significant increase in truck traffic, influencing traffic operations, safety, and the state of repair of highway infrastructure. Traffic congestion in turn has impeded the speed and reliability of freight movement on the highway system. Appropriate planning and decision making processes are necessary to address these issues. However, a main challenge in establishing such processes is the lack of adequate data on statewide freight movements. As traditional data sources on freight movement are either inadequate or no longer available, new sources of data must be …

Influence Of Home Environment On Participation In Home Activities Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Divya Sood, Patti Lavesser, Caren Schranz
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: This study explored the key physical and social factors within the home environment that influence the participation of children with an ASD in home activities.
Method: Step 1 used a correlational research design to identify relationships between the home environment and participation patterns of children with ASD. Twenty-two children, ages 3 to 6 years, with a diagnosis of ASD participated. Data were collected using the Preschool Activity Card Sort (PACS), Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory (HOME), Parenting Stress Index (PSI), Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS), and Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Social Status (ISS). In Step 2, …
Tripping And Falling Into The Future: An Eolithic Perspective, Daniel L. Dustin, Keri A. Schwab
Tripping And Falling Into The Future: An Eolithic Perspective, Daniel L. Dustin, Keri A. Schwab
Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration
Thirty years ago, Dustin and McAvoy (1984) published an essay in Environmental Ethics titled Toward Environmental Eolithism. The article compared and contrasted two distinct orientations to environmental planning and management: the design mentality and the eolithic mentality. The authors concluded that the more popular design mentality lacked sufficient flexibility and adaptability to maximize performance, and that the more obscure eolithic mentality was a superior orientation to environmental planning and management. In this article we extend the logic of that Environmental Ethics essay to criticize a popular offshoot of the design mentality strategic planning as it is commonly conducted in the …
Dynamic Pricing In The Singapore Condominium Market, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming Liu
Dynamic Pricing In The Singapore Condominium Market, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming Liu
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Dynamic pricing strategies are likely an important consideration of Singapore condominium developers because of the durability of condominiums, price transparency, and the long sales period. While we do not observe any systematic relationship between the new sale prices and time of purchase, we do find that quality-adjusted price increases and the quality of units purchased decreases over the new sale period. These results suggest that condominium developers allow early buyers to purchase high quality units at discounted prices but do not extend the price discount to later buyers of low quality units. Issue 07: The Need For Local Reintegration Policy/Programs In Rural Mexico, Meredith Giel
International Migration Research Centre
Since 2007, a growing number of Mexican immigrants in the United States have been returning to Mexico. For the first time since the 1960s, net migration in Mexico is zero, implying that just as many Mexicans are returning to Mexico as are going to the United States. There are a number of factors contributing to this return migration by Mexican nationals. This current situation presents the Mexican government with new priorities and responsibilities. Upon return, many of these unskilled workers face barriers preventing proper reintegration back into Mexican society, including a lack of support networks, potential language and cultural barriers …

Adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo Sampling And Estimation In Mata, Matthew J. Baker
Adaptive Markov Chain Monte Carlo Sampling And Estimation In Mata, Matthew J. Baker
Economics Working Papers
I describe algorithms for drawing from distributions using adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, introduce a Mata function for performing adaptive MCMC, amcmc(), and a suite of functions amcmc *() allowing an alternative implementation of adaptive MCMC. amcmc() and amcmc *() may be used in conjunction with models set up to work with Mata's [M-5] moptimize( ) or [M-5] optimize( ), or with stand-alone functions. To show how the routines might be used in estimation problems, I give two examples of what Chernozukov and Hong (2003) refer to as Quasi-Bayesian or Laplace-Type estimators - simulation-based estimators employing MCMC sampling. …
