A New Hedonic Regression For Real Estate Prices Applied To The Singapore Residential Market, Jiang Liang, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
A New Hedonic Regression For Real Estate Prices Applied To The Singapore Residential Market, Jiang Liang, Peter C. B. Phillips, Jun Yu
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper develops a new hedonic method for constructing a real estate price index that utilizes all transaction price information that encompasses both single-sale and repeat-sale properties. The new method is less prone to specification errors than standard hedonic methods and uses all available data. Like the Case-Shiller repeat-sales method, the new method has the advantage of being computationally efficient. In an empirical analysis of the methodology, we fit the model to all transaction prices for private residential property holdings in Singapore between Q1 1995 and Q2 2014, covering several periods of major price fluctuation and changes in government macro …
Additive Nonparametric Regression In The Presence Of Endogenous Regressors, Deniz Ozabaci, Daniel J. Henderson, Liangjun Su
Additive Nonparametric Regression In The Presence Of Endogenous Regressors, Deniz Ozabaci, Daniel J. Henderson, Liangjun Su
Research Collection School Of Economics
In this article we consider nonparametric estimation of a structural equation model under full additivity constraint. We propose estimators for both the conditional mean and gradient which are consistent, asymptotically normal, oracle efficient, and free from the curse of dimensionality. Monte Carlo simulations support the asymptotic developments. We employ a partially linear extension of our model to study the relationship between child care and cognitive outcomes. Some of our (average) results are consistent with the literature (e.g., negative returns to child care when mothers have higher levels of education). However, as our estimators allow for heterogeneity both across and within …
Does Market Competition Lead To Customization?, Wen-Tai Hsu, Yi Lu, Travis Ng
Does Market Competition Lead To Customization?, Wen-Tai Hsu, Yi Lu, Travis Ng
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper proposes a theory of competition and customization. When firms allocate their production to both custom-made and standardized products, the fraction of sales from the former will increase in the face of increased competition. Recent surveys conducted by the World Bank on Chinese firms provide a rare direct measure of customization that allows us to test the above-mentioned prediction. We find empirical results consistent with the prediction.
Balancing Envelope And Heating System Parameters For Zero Emissions Retrofit Using Building Sensor Data, Zoltán Nagy, Dino Rossi, Christian Hersberger, Silvia Domingo Irigoyen, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter
Balancing Envelope And Heating System Parameters For Zero Emissions Retrofit Using Building Sensor Data, Zoltán Nagy, Dino Rossi, Christian Hersberger, Silvia Domingo Irigoyen, Clayton Miller, Arno Schlueter
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Retrofit measures are an effective means to improve both the heating energy and carbon footprint of a building. On one hand, reducing the losses through the envelope reduces the energy consumption. On the other hand, updating the heating from a fossil-fuel based system to an emission-free one bears the potential for CO2-emission free operation. The latter can be achieved if the supply temperature of the heating system can be sufficiently reduced, such that the operation of a heat pump with a high coefficient of performance becomes feasible. For this, typically the heating area is increased to facilitate the heat transfer. …

Historical Roots Of Canadian Aboriginal And Non-Aboriginal Maple Practices, Ryan Huron
Historical Roots Of Canadian Aboriginal And Non-Aboriginal Maple Practices, Ryan Huron
Geography and Environmental Studies Major Research Papers
This research is concerned with developing a historical baseline of Canadian Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal maple practices and the contribution of these activities to the well-being (WB) of communities up to approximately 1950. This research measures WB using two unique frameworks developed for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities associated with maple products and practices. In order to describe WB in historical contexts the research used archival data obtained primarily from Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and Early Canadiana Online (ECO). Results from the research showed that in Aboriginal communities, dynamics related to emotional, physical and mental WB were referenced the most often …

Although executive functions (e.g., response inhibition) are often thought to interact consciously with reward, recent studies have demonstrated that they can also be triggered by unconscious stimuli. Further research has suggested a close relationship between consciously and unconsciously triggered response inhibition. To date, however, the effect of reward on unconsciously triggered response inhibition has not been explored. To address this issue, participants in this study performed runs of a modified Go/No-Go task during which they were exposed to both high and low value monetary rewards presented both supraliminally and subliminally. Participants were informed that they would earn the reward displayed …

Altering The Social Learning Climate: Raising The Legal Age Of Tobacco Purchase And Social Learning Theory, Beth Fera
Theses and Dissertations
In 2005, New Jersey enacted the Smoke Free Air Act to deter the onset of smoking of high school students by raising the legal age of tobacco purchase from 18 to 19 (Cave, Holl, & Schweber, 2005). This was intended to reduce smoking in this population by restricting virtually all high school students' access to cigarettes; however, this legislation also reduced smoking in ways proposed by the concepts of Ronald Akers' Social Learning Theory (1979). The present study postulated limiting access to cigarettes would reduce all measures of cigarettes use, resulting in fewer smoking associates to model smoking behavior, fewer …

Legal And Ethical Issues Of Information Service Delivery And Library Information Science Professionals In University Libraries In Nigeria, Ucha Mbofung Mrs, Sunday Olanrewaju Popoola Dr
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper is a concluding part of pilot study assessing awareness and application of some legal and ethical principles in professional codes to information service delivery by library information science professionals in Nigeria. Descriptive survey utilising questionnaire was adopted to gather data from 429 library and information science professionals in 24 federal universities in Nigeria. The questionnaire items were excerpts from IFLA/FAIFE Statements. Simple frequencies, percentages and correlation were used in data analysis. The conclusive results show that effective information service delivery is dependent on professional knowledge of legal/ethical principles; their practical application has marginal effect on the larger proportion …
Padania Or Federalism? An Examination Of The Spatial Demands Of Italy's Northern League, Anthony Vincent Pierucci
Padania Or Federalism? An Examination Of The Spatial Demands Of Italy's Northern League, Anthony Vincent Pierucci
Theses and Dissertations
This study will analyze what factors affect the oscillation of the spatial demands of ethno-regionalist parties between more moderate and more radical objectives. The factors under examination are electoral, economic, internal organization, and the "other" that the party defines itself against. The study analyzes the relationship between these factors and spatial demands utilizing a case study of the Lega Nord. Ultimately, the study concludes that there is some relation between these factors and the Lega Nord's spatial demands, even if they are not directly causal of the change in spatial demands themselves. The findings also suggest that the generalized findings …

Successful Scholarly Communication At A Small University: Integration Of Education, Services, And An Institutional Repository At Valparaiso University, Jonathan Bull, Bradford Lee Eden
Successful Scholarly Communication At A Small University: Integration Of Education, Services, And An Institutional Repository At Valparaiso University, Jonathan Bull, Bradford Lee Eden
Library Faculty Publications
Beginning in 2011, the Christopher Center Library Services (CCLS) unit at Valparaiso University (VU) started implementing new scholarly communication services utilizing two different components: 1. the education and training of library staff in scholarly communication trends and issues; and 2. the implementation of ValpoScholar, VU’s institutional repository (IR) and its associated services. These components allowed for new skills to be developed, new services to be delivered and the library’s digital collections to grow with minimal impact to existing services. This model may provide a framework for other small institutions interested in adding scholarly communication services to their existing library services.

An Exploratory Investigation Of Looping High School Math And English And Student Achievement, Lee Langmuir
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory investigation was to compare the standardized test scores of students in looped (n=47) and non-looped (n=38) settings in high school Math and English classes. In doing so, the scores were compared to see if instruction from the same teacher for more than one year had an effect on student achievement as measured by the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). The HSPA is broken down in to a Math and English section with a possible score of 300 on each; student scores fall in to Partially Proficient (PP), Proficient (P), and Advanced Proficient (AP). Other factors …

The Effects Of Endogamous Marriage On Family Outcomes: Evidence From Exogenous Variation In Immigrant Flows During 1900-1930 In The United States, Ho Po Crystal Wong
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Positive assortative matching in terms of traits like ethnicity, race and personality has been prevalent in marital formation. One possible explanation for this is that husbands and wives in endogamous marriages have complementary skills and tastes that increase marital surplus. This paper aims to estimate the effects of ethnic assortative matching on a variety of household outcomes by using the exogenous variation in immigrant flows in the United States during the period 1900-1930 to disentangle the selection effect of partners. The major finding is that the complementarities in home production from same ethnic marriage enhances investment in household public goods …
