Do We Speak The Same Language? A Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of Information Literacy, Jonathan Cope, Jesús E. Sanabria Oct 2014

Do We Speak The Same Language? A Study Of Faculty Perceptions Of Information Literacy, Jonathan Cope, Jesús E. Sanabria

Publications and Research

The authors analyze twenty in-depth interviews with faculty members about how they perceive information literacy (IL) to examine two key factors: how disciplinary background influences conceptions of IL among faculty members in academic departments and how the instructors’ perception of information literacy differs from that of professionals in library and information science. The investigators analyzed these interviews by utilizing a phenomenological method. The faculty members were interviewed at a four-year college, the College of Staten Island, and at a community college, the Bronx Community College, both part of the City University of New York.

Microfinance Et Développement Au Cameroun : L’Efficacité De La Mc2 Dans La Communauté Agricole De Batoufam, Elisabeth Hansen

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The agriculture sector in Cameroon remains underdeveloped, and many farmers continue to suffer a lack of means. Given the debate concerning the efficacy of microfinance as a solution, this study aimed to examine the efficacy of a microfinance institution, La Mutuelle Communautaire de Croissance (MC2) in Batoufam, a rural agricultural village in Cameroon. In recent years, MC2s have become very popular in Cameroon; however, there is not yet a thorough study on the efficacy of the MC2 of Batoufam. Through interviewing farmers, the Chief of Batoufam, the employees of MC2 and of the NGO Appropriate …

ادارة قوى التناقض لضمان الاداء المنظمي المستدام في اطار نموذج التوازن الديناميكي للتنظيم – بحث تحليلي في عينة من كليات الجامعة العراقية, عامر علي حسين العطوي

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

An Analysis Of Political And Legal Debates Concerning Medicaid Expansion In Virginia, Rick Mayes, Benjamin Paul Oct 2014

An Analysis Of Political And Legal Debates Concerning Medicaid Expansion In Virginia, Rick Mayes, Benjamin Paul

Political Science Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court’s historic June 2012 ruling regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius set the stage for a massive federalism battle over Medicaid expansion in the United States. The original language of the Act was intended to nationalize Medicaid by having every state expand their program’s eligibility to all individuals up to 138% of the federal poverty level. This would have significantly reshaped Medicaid, a joint federal-state health insurance program, into a universal entitlement for all low-income citizens. Currently, Medicaid eligibility varies dramatically from state to state. The Court held that the …

Interpretive Habit Is Strengthened By Cognitive Bias Modification, Paula T. Hertel, Molly Holmes, Amanda Benbow Oct 2014

Interpretive Habit Is Strengthened By Cognitive Bias Modification, Paula T. Hertel, Molly Holmes, Amanda Benbow

Psychology Faculty Research

We investigated the nature of the memory mechanisms underlying cognitive bias modification by applying Jacoby’s (1991) process-dissociation procedure to responses during the transfer task. In the two training conditions (negative and benign), students imagined themselves in 100 ambiguous scenarios, most with potentially negative resolutions; the ambiguity was resolved in a consistently negative or benign direction by completing the fragment of a final word. Control participants completed nonambiguous, nonemotional scenarios. Next, all participants responded on a final training block, where half of the scenarios were completed negatively and half benignly. Transfer was assessed by examining choices in the completion of test …

The Early Impact Of The Affordable Care Act State-By-State, Amanda E. Kowalski Oct 2014

The Early Impact Of The Affordable Care Act State-By-State, Amanda E. Kowalski

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

I examine the impact of state policy decisions on the early impact of the ACA using data through the first half of 2014. I focus on the individual health insurance market, which includes plans purchased through exchanges as well as plans purchased directly from insurers. In this market, at least 13.2 million people were covered in the second quarter of 2014, representing an increase of at least 4.2 million beyond pre-ACA state-level trends. I use data on coverage, premiums, and costs and a model developed by Hackmann, Kolstad, and Kowalski (2013) to calculate changes in selection and markups, which allow …

Mindful Eating: Trait And State Mindfulness Predict Healthier Eating Behavior, Christian H. Jordan, Wan Wang, Linda R. Donatoni, Brian P. Meier Oct 2014

Mindful Eating: Trait And State Mindfulness Predict Healthier Eating Behavior, Christian H. Jordan, Wan Wang, Linda R. Donatoni, Brian P. Meier

Psychology Faculty Publications

Obesity and excess weight are significant societal problems. Mindfulness may encourage healthier weight and eating habits. Across four studies, we found a positive relation between mindfulness and healthier eating. Trait mindfulness was associated with less impulsive eating, reduced calorie consumption, and healthier snack choices. In addition, we found a causal effect of mindfulness on healthier eating. An experimental manipulation of state mindfulness led participants to consume fewer calories in a spontaneous eating task. We also found preliminary evidence that mindfulness affects eating behavior by encouraging attitudinal preferences for healthier foods. Taken together, these results provide strong evidence that mindfulness encourages …

Building A More Diverse Skilled Workforce In The Highway Trades: Are Oregon’S Current Efforts Working?, Sarah Burd-Sharps, Kristen Lewis, Maura Kelly

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Jobs in the highway construction trades have historically been primarily held by white men and largely remain so today; of those completing apprenticeships in the highway trades in Oregon between 2011 and early 2014, 83.4 percent were white men. Building a more diverse skilled workforce and making careers in these trades more accessible and appealing to women and people of color has proven challenging.

The state’s Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI), in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), in 2010 began a statewide effort—the Highway Construction Workforce Development Program—to find, train, and employ a diverse workforce for …

On The Choice Of Test Statistic For Conditional Moment Inequalities, Timothy B. Armstrong Oct 2014

On The Choice Of Test Statistic For Conditional Moment Inequalities, Timothy B. Armstrong

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper derives asymptotic power functions for Cramer-von Mises (CvM) style tests for conditional moment inequality models in the set identified case. Combined with power results for Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests, these results can be used to choose the optimal test statistic, weighting function and, for tests based on kernel estimates, kernel bandwidth. The results show that KS tests are preferred to CvM tests, and that a truncated variance weighting is preferred to bounded weightings under a minimax criterion, and for a class of alternatives that arises naturally in these models. The results also provide insight into how moment selection and …

On The Choice Of Test Statistic For Conditional Moment Inequalities, Timothy B. Armstrong

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper derives asymptotic power functions for Cramer-von Mises (CvM) style tests for inference on a finite dimensional parameter defined by conditional moment inequalities in the case where the parameter is set identified. Combined with power results for Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests, these results can be used to choose the optimal test statistic, weighting function and, for tests based on kernel estimates, kernel bandwidth. The results show that KS tests are preferred to CvM tests, and that a truncated variance weighting is preferred to bounded weightings under a minimax criterion, and for a class of alternatives that arises naturally in these …

This paper derives asymptotic approximations to the power of Cramer-von Mises (CvM) style tests for inference on a finite dimensional parameter defined by conditional moment inequalities in the case where the parameter is set identified. Combined with power results for Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) tests, these results can be used to choose the optimal test statistic, weighting function and, for tests based on kernel estimates, kernel bandwidth. Verbal Compliments As A Differential Source Of Mate Poaching Threat For Men And Women, Christina M. Brown, Emily R. Daniels, Christopher J.N. Lustgraaf, Donald F. Sacco Oct 2014

Verbal Compliments As A Differential Source Of Mate Poaching Threat For Men And Women, Christina M. Brown, Emily R. Daniels, Christopher J.N. Lustgraaf, Donald F. Sacco

Faculty Publications

Two studies tested whether people feel threatened by another individual verbally complimenting their romantic partner. Such compliments may indicate that the other person is a potential rival who will try to "poach" their mate. Across two studies, women were more threatened than men when imagining another person complimenting their partner's physical appearance. There were no sex differences in response to imagining another person complimenting their partner's sense of humor. When another person compliments one's partner's physical appearance, this indicates that they may be sexually attracted to the partner. Mediation analyses revealed that the sex difference occurs because women believe men …

Starting From The Ground Up: How We Created Our Own Digital Collections Platform, Axa Liauw, Cole Hudson, Graham Hukill

Library Scholarly Publications

We recently released our new digital collections platform, based around an implementation of Fedora Commons, the open-source digital repository software. By building a system from the ground up, we have learned a great deal about interface design, workflow management, the evaluation of pre-existing tools and systems, as well as building and using APIs (Application Programmable Interfaces) to our advantage. At this session, we will outline specific software and technologies we used and why, as we discuss our experience of creating a digital collections platform.

Audience members will come away with a better sense of what, for one library, it meant …
