Building Better Help: User Characteristics’ Effect On Library Help Design, Tao Zhang, Ilana Stonebraker, Marlen Promann

The goal of this study is to examine the effect of user help seeking characteristics on their perception of library help design principles, formats and tools. Structural equation modeling (SEM) of a questionnaire survey results showed a number of significant regression relationships. Analysis of open-ended survey questions revealed existing user behaviors such as preferred help formats and gave insights into the likelihood of using a help system.

It outlined the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education being drafted by the Association of College and Research Libraries. The presentation specifically focused on the 6 proposed threshold concepts described in the draft Framework, and discussed challenges and opportunities of applying threshold concepts to the design of information literacy instructional efforts.

The datasets provided as part of DTRS-10 all relate to what may broadly be labeled as ‘design critiques’ in an educational context. As such, we chose to center our theoretical analysis on the evaluative reasoning taking place during expert appraisals of the design concepts that were being produced by industrial design students throughout the design process. Design review in an educational setting is an activity that helps educators in assessing students’ progress, and provides opportunities for students to learn how professionals in the field perceive and judge design-in-process, aka professional vision. In this study we analyzed design reviews to understand how interpersonal interactions between participants provides a context for the expression of professional knowledge. We identified episodes of professional vision interaction, and examined the interpersonal responses that constitute a design review meeting. This dissertation analyzes the organization of individuals through online social media applications and other community-building websites, such as Facebook, Wikipedia, Google Maps, and online classrooms, using the Aristotelian rhetorical concept of the commonplaces as well as political, critical, and legal theory. Based on these analyses, this dissertation also provides pedagogical recommendations for the teaching of writing with technology in both online and physical classrooms.

This dissertation empirically investigates mental health care expenditures between community mental health care providers, using a spatial panel data model. Specifically, it explores the spatial interdependency in the publicly funded mental health care system of Detroit-Wayne County with a spatial dynamic panel data model with individual effects and other controls. A transformation approach is applied to ensure consistency of the estimates. Results support some degree of interdependence between neighboring sites/clinics and time dynamics in terms of their gross revenue. This dissertation examines the factors that will affect nursing home quality of care using several national data sources on market regulation, county demographic characteristics, market structural and the characteristics of different types of long-term care providers in 2010.

I devise a theoretical model that provides an interpretive framework to define and describe the concept of provocation as well as to analyze and explain the theoretical provocations in Plato, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Friedrich Nietzsche's works. This research examines the relationship between victimization, social status and opportunity. More specifically, the effects of social status and opportunity on repeat victimization are examined. How does social status and opportunity simultaneously effect repeat victimization? This report consists of a secondary data analysis of the 2004 and 2009 Canadian Victimization Survey with a combined sample size of 43,200 people who were interviewed by telephone. Opportunity either partially or completely mediated the effects of social status on repeat victimization; however for certain subsamples neither opportunity nor social status explained repeat victimization. The present study examined bilingual counseling in a localized setting: a high school in southwest Detroit. The study assessed the ways in which bilingual counseling increases effective communication among bilingual students, school personnel, and students' parents/guardians. Participants included a cross-section of educators and support staff who work at a high school in southwest Detroit where the student population is predominately Spanish/English bilingual. Questionnaires were distributed to 81 participants; 59 completed questionnaires were returned. The instrument that was used to collect data was a questionnaire, which consisted of 19 questions. I examine the unexamined connections and commonalities among the works of these three preeminent political theorists with the aim of understanding our common, contemporary construction of "the political." Specifically, I examine the way that each of these theorists describes a condition wherein the very concept of "the political" has undergone significant changes. Absentee Soldier Voting In Civil War Law And Politics, David A. Collins

During the Civil War, twenty northern states changed their laws to permit absent soldiers to vote. Before enactment of these statutes, state laws had tethered balloting to the voter's community and required in-person participation by voters. Under the new laws, eligible voters - as long as they were soldiers - could cast ballots in distant military encampments, far from their neighbors and community leaders. This dissertation examines the legal conflicts that arose from this phenomenon and the political causes underlying it.

The nature of American identity is highly contested in the twenty-first century. This dissertation seeks to understand how this state of uncertainty produces a rhetorical opening for new and unimagined rhetorical possibilities. As citizens lose faith in the narratives that have defined national identity, the populace becomes open to a new narrative and a new figure to represent American identity. This dissertation puts into conversation new media and network theories with the philosophical writings of John Dewey to reconstruct a more relevant and current approach to critical pedagogy that takes into account the shift in socioeconomic power as we move into a control society comprised of immaterial labor. My chapters tackle three different critical pedagogy dilemmas: the neglect of affect, agency in late-capitalism, and critical literacy in new media ecologies. The aim of this investigation was to examine the psychometric properties of the Circle of Courage Scale. Data was collected from 51 youth ages 13-17 enrolled in program at Starr Commonwealth a non-profit human services organization headquartered in Michigan. Data was collected over a period of 9 months and used as an aggregate data base. Principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation resulted in a four-factor solution as determined by eigenvalues greater than one, simple structure convergence, item loadings and conceptual clarity. Through ethnographic fieldwork and autoethnography, I explore the intersection of race and hip-hop. There is an apparent disconnect between much of the academic literature on tax compliance and the administration of tax policy. In the benchmark economic model, the key policy parameters affecting tax evasion are the tax rate, the detection probability, and the penalty imposed conditional on the evasion being detected. Meanwhile, tax administrators also tend to place a great deal of emphasis on the importance of improving "tax morale," by which they generally mean increasing voluntary compliance with tax laws and creating a social norm of compliance. In developing countries, informal firms account for up to half of economic activity. They provide livelihood for billions of people. Yet their role in economic development remains controversial with some viewing informality as pent-up potential and others viewing informality as a parasitic organizational form that hinders economic growth. In this paper, we assess these perspectives. We argue that the evidence is most consistent with dual models, in which informality arises out of poverty and the informal and formal sectors are very different. It seems that informal firms have low productivity and produce low- quality products; and, consequently, they do not …

Kafkaesque, Orwellian, eerie, surreal, bizarre, grotesque, alien, wacky, fascinating, dystopian, illusive, theatrical, antic, haunting, apocalyptic: these are just a few of the vaguely science-fictional adjectives that are now associated with North Korea. At the same time, North Korea has become an oddly convenient trope for a certain aesthetic – an uncanny opacity; an ominous mystique – that many writers and artists have exploited to generate striking science-fictional effects in texts with little or no connection to North Korean reality. Topic Modeling In The Queens College Civil Rights Collections, Thomas J. Cleary

In 2014 a topic model was conducted on the materials found on the Queens College Special Collections Civil Rights website (archvies.qc.cuny.edu/civilrights). The titles, subjects, descriptions, full text (when available), coverage were all put into "Item" level text files and then run through MALLET (topic modeling program) to create 30 different topics. These computer generated topics and connected items were then labeled into meaningful terms and uploaded into Gephi. The Gephi results were then edited to a web that showed the thematic groupings of each.
