For years debate has rumbled in this country over prison overcrowding. More recently, there has been an additional spotlight on issues that are exacerbated when prisons are over capacity, such as prison rape and the use of restrictive housing (housing inmates in isolated conditions). In the case of prison rape, federal standards have been placed on institutions through the passage of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). General consensus among corrections professionals is that a lack of internal action diminished their voice during the creation of the PREA standards. There is consequently a large motivation for correctional institutions to work …

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of The Gacaca Court System In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Lauren Haberstock
An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of The Gacaca Court System In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Lauren Haberstock
Global Tides
This article discusses and examines the effectiveness of the Gacaca Court System that was put in place following the Rwandan genocide in 1994. A brief history of Rwanda reveals deeply rooted ethnic divisions between the Hutu and Tutsi people--a factor that would greatly impact pre-genocide and post-genocide Rwanda. Following the genocide, the Rwandan government and international community needed to find a way to deal with the crimes and atrocities committed during the genocide. The Gacaca Court System was implemented in order to do just this. However, lending to flaws inherent with the system, the Gacaca Court System has not effectively …
Atatürk's Balancing Act: The Role Of Secularism In Turkey, Patrick G. Rear
Atatürk's Balancing Act: The Role Of Secularism In Turkey, Patrick G. Rear
Global Tides
The intersection of religion and politics in the form of a civil religion has been present since time immemorial. This paper looks specifically to the relationship between Turkey’s development of a secular civil religion after gaining independence and the advancing of women’s rights and democratic values. In examining the intersections of state and religion in a secular Islamic society, it draws parallels to the French civil religion as it came to be following the French Revolution. Though Atatürk and other secularists were strong forces in developing the civil religion, the paper also examines liberal democratic and conservative Islamic groups in …

Distance Makes The Heart Grow Fonder: Do Long-Distance Relationships Have An Effect On Levels Of Intimacy In Romantic Relationships?, Kelsey K. Peterson
Global Tides
This study examined intimacy levels between individuals in long-distance relationships and those who are in geographically close relationships. Intimacy was broken down into three subcategories: Commitment, Togetherness and Satisfaction in the relationship. It was hypothesized that individuals in long-distance relationships would have higher intimacy levels in all three subcategories than those who are not. The participants were young adults aged 18-25. They were given an online survey and answered questions, which measured intimacy in regards to the three subcategories. An independent sample t-test revealed that there was no significant difference between those who lived close and those in a long-distance …
Biological Aging And Peer Victimization: The Role Of Social Support In Telomere Length And Health Outcomes, Maria Elizabeth Guarneri-White
Biological Aging And Peer Victimization: The Role Of Social Support In Telomere Length And Health Outcomes, Maria Elizabeth Guarneri-White
Psychology Theses - Archive
The health benefits of social support have been well documented in the literature (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Newman & Roberts, 2013), as have the somatic and psychological outcomes of being the victim of bullying (Wang, Nansel, & Iannotti, 2011; Knack, Jensen-Campbell, & Baum, 2011). Recent research has looked at the separate role each of these interpersonal processes play in cellular aging via the study of telomeres, which are the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes that shorten with each cell division (Epel, 2009). Data indicate that stress can accelerate this shortening, leading to premature cell death and a shortened …

It is well established that women and men respond differently to drugs of abuse. Women begin use at an earlier age, progress through the stages of addiction more quickly, and are more vulnerable to relapse than men. Through the support of both human and animal literature, it is clear that one of the driving factors mediating this difference is ovarian hormones. Increases in the ovarian hormone estradiol have been linked to potentiated acquisition of cocaine administration, increased responding for cocaine in the maintenance of addiction, and increased cue-reactivity in female rats. Recent research has begun to characterize the primary reward …
Development And Validation Of A Group Based Dominance Scale, Tiffany Janiece Davis
Development And Validation Of A Group Based Dominance Scale, Tiffany Janiece Davis
Psychology Theses - Archive
The goal of this project was to update the social dominance orientation (SDO) scale by creating a separate measure for its subfactor group based dominance (GBD), which is defined as how strongly a person feels one group should dominate another. A pilot study was conducted with the GBD scale composed of 24 items. After being rated by subject matter experts and undergoing exploratory factor analysis, it was reduced to just 12 items. The current cross-validation study administered the revised scale and compared its performance to the original SDO scale by examining how well each predicted various attitudes. Overall, the GBD …
The Role Of Executive Functions And Maternal Characteristics In Externalizing Problems Among Young Children, Catherine A. Spann
The Role Of Executive Functions And Maternal Characteristics In Externalizing Problems Among Young Children, Catherine A. Spann
Psychology Theses - Archive
Externalizing problems, such as hyperactivity, inattention, and defiance, that emerge early in life put children on a path toward numerous adverse outcomes, including delinquency, academic failure, and substance abuse. Using a family study design, the current investigation sought to identify predictors of externalizing problems in preschool-aged children, with a specific focus on early executive functioning skills and maternal depression and education. Families with two children between the ages of 2.5 and 5.5 were recruited from the Dallas/Fort-Worth Metroplex and participated in a lab visit at The University of Texas at Arlington. The current study included 196 children (males = 102; …

Attachment, Well-Being, And College Senior Concerns About The Transition Out Of College, Joel A. Lane
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study examined the relationships among attachment, psychological well-being (PWB), life satisfaction, and concerns about the transition out of college among a sample of college seniors. A path analysis was conducted predicting that PWB and life satisfaction would mediate the relationships between attachment and three types of graduation transition concerns: career, change and loss, and support. Significant mediation effects impacting career concerns and change and loss concerns were discovered. Implications for college counseling are discussed. Keywords: attachment, college graduation, transition.
Open Hearts Or Smoke And Mirrors: Metaphorical Framing And Frame Conflicts In A Public Meeting, L. David Ritchie, Lynne Cameron
Open Hearts Or Smoke And Mirrors: Metaphorical Framing And Frame Conflicts In A Public Meeting, L. David Ritchie, Lynne Cameron
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
The concept of framing has been widely used to help understand how aspects of messages can shape people’s expectations and consequently influence the outcomes of communicative interactions. In this study we examine transcripts of a contentious and ultimately unsuccessful public meeting between police officials and members of the African-American community following the fatal shooting of a young African-American woman by police officers. We show how contradictory framing between public officials and members of the community as well as within each group may have contributed to unintended and asymmetrical ironies, and ultimately to the failure of the meeting to achieve the …
The Risks Of The Rose City: Assessing The Social Vulnerability Of Communities To Multiple Environmental Hazards In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Daniel R. Logan
The Risks Of The Rose City: Assessing The Social Vulnerability Of Communities To Multiple Environmental Hazards In The Portland Metropolitan Area, Daniel R. Logan
Geography Masters Research Papers
In the past three decades, research in the geography of hazards and disasters has expanded beyond the response to hazard events and incorporated the concepts of preparedness, recovery, and mitigation. These issues require a complete understanding of the vulnerability of places to hazards, not only in regards to hazard characteristics but in regards to social and economic conditions as well. This paper offers a case study in hazard exposure and social vulnerability analysis which incorporates the methodology of two previous studies on the same topics. A geographic information system was used to determine vulnerable areas and populations exposed to five …
Industrial Decline In An Industrial Sanctuary Portland’S Central Eastside Industrial District, 1981-2014, Allison Jones
Industrial Decline In An Industrial Sanctuary Portland’S Central Eastside Industrial District, 1981-2014, Allison Jones
Geography Masters Research Papers
This study examines the evolution of the industrial landscape of Portland, Oregon’s Central Eastside Industrial District (CEID) from the initial declaration in 1981 as an ‘industrial sanctuary’ to the present day. The study recreates the historical landscape of 1981, mapping historical land use data from archived Sanborn maps in GIS. This was then compared to the current landscape of 2014, wherein data gathered from field visits, and online, public land use databases was mapped using GIS.
This paper addresses the recent transformation, looking at patterns within the physical and functional realm; and observing how these changes have influenced the character …
The Cully Park Inter-Tribal Gathering Garden: Place-Making Through Indigenous Eco-Cultural Reclamation, Randall Morris
The Cully Park Inter-Tribal Gathering Garden: Place-Making Through Indigenous Eco-Cultural Reclamation, Randall Morris
Geography Masters Research Papers
Portland's history and geography are patterned, like any city, by spatial imaginings both utopian and dystopian. This examination of the raw landscape of the city’s nascent garden space in Cully Park is an attempt to research a third manifestation of space, one that might be called heterotopia. This research into the Inter-Tribal Gathering Garden is a search for a more complete accounting of place, one which also acknowledges the variety of non-human agencies (a list which would include streets, planning documents, various plants, historical accounts, and even the consistent boundaries of the space itself) found in all heterogeneous …
The Cost Of Hauling Timber: A Comparison Of Raster- And Vector- Based Travel-Time Estimates In Gis, Sara M. Loreno
The Cost Of Hauling Timber: A Comparison Of Raster- And Vector- Based Travel-Time Estimates In Gis, Sara M. Loreno
Geography Masters Research Papers
The cost of transporting forest products from harvest site to processing facility is a critical indicator of timber project feasibility. In order to accurately assess these timber haul costs, least-cost travel-time estimates among the site and the facility can be estimated using vector- or raster-based GIS methods. This study explores the applicability of both the raster- and vector-techniques within a variety of landscapes, including forested areas where comprehensive transportation data is limited. A comparison between the travel-time estimates derived from both methods was performed on three study sites using real-world data. The comparison also tested the effect of resolution on …
The Role Of News Media Use And Demographic Characteristics In The Prediction Of Information Overload, Qihao Ji, Louisa Ha, Ulla Sypher
The Role Of News Media Use And Demographic Characteristics In The Prediction Of Information Overload, Qihao Ji, Louisa Ha, Ulla Sypher
School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications
Drawing on the information overload theory, this study investigates how news media use relates to the probability of information overload. Our broad goal is to explore how typical media use outside the working environment impacts information overload. Through a large mail survey conducted in northwest Ohio (N = 661), the study combined resident samples and college student samples and examined several variables regarding demographic characteristics, news media use, and information searching efficiency. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the data. Results confirmed that age, gender, income, traditional news media use, and information searching efficiency can partially predict one’s probability …
Wearing Different Hats: Micro Role Transitions In Two Contexts, Opal Man-Ching Leung
Wearing Different Hats: Micro Role Transitions In Two Contexts, Opal Man-Ching Leung
2014
Individuals make transitions between roles everyday as they move from home to work to other settings. This dissertation extends the work of Goffman (1959), Hall & Richer (1988), and Ashforth et al. (2000, 2001) on the topic of micro role transitions, which are the "frequent and usually recurring transitions, such as the commute between home and work" (Ashforth et al., 2000: 472). While the context of most of the research on micro role transitions has typically been focused on the work-home boundary (e.g. Rothbard et al., 2005; Nippert-Eng, 2008; Greenhaus & Powell, 2006; Hall & Richter, 1988), the three studies …
From Social Media To Social Movement: Developing A Secondary Stakeholder Model For The Information Age – The Case Of Deepwater Horizon, Michele A. Jurgens
From Social Media To Social Movement: Developing A Secondary Stakeholder Model For The Information Age – The Case Of Deepwater Horizon, Michele A. Jurgens
2014
Secondary stakeholders are thought to differ from primary stakeholders in that they interact with the firm mainly for the purpose of changing its ethical, societal, and environmental policies and practices. Research on secondary stakeholders has shown that they are successful in influencing their corporate targets despite the relative lack of power, legitimacy, and urgency of their requests. One explanation for the success of secondary stakeholders can be found in the `political process model' from the social movement literature. The political process model describes and predicts how social movements are formed and the conditions that are necessary for them being sustained …
The Bridge Drawing With Path Art-Based Assessment: Measuring Meaningful Life Pathways In Higher Education Students, Olena Darewych
The Bridge Drawing With Path Art-Based Assessment: Measuring Meaningful Life Pathways In Higher Education Students, Olena Darewych
Expressive Therapies Dissertations
This cross-sectional study investigated the relationships among the Bridge Drawing with Path (BDP) art-based assessment and two positive psychology instruments: the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ; Steger et al., 2006) and the Adult State Hope Scale (ASHS; Snyder et al., 1996). All three assessments (BDP, MLQ and ASHS) are intended to test for an individual’s goal-related pursuits. Forty-four higher education students studying in Britain and Canada participated in the study. Results indicated that an association exists between BDP written associations and MLQ-presence of meaning sub-scores. Participants who scored high on MLQ – presence of meaning generated more sources of life …
The Influence Of Nature Relatedness On Decision Making Regarding Mate Selection In College-Educated Young Adults, Nicole Lynn Kras
The Influence Of Nature Relatedness On Decision Making Regarding Mate Selection In College-Educated Young Adults, Nicole Lynn Kras
Educational Studies Dissertations
Research to date has mainly focused on the influence of nature relatedness on a person’s subjective well-being (Nisbet, 2011) and as a predictor of happiness (Zelenski & Nisbet, 2014). There are few, if any, studies that look at the influence of nature relatedness on mate selection. The research question is Does nature relatedness influence mate selection in college-educated adults between the ages of 25 and 40? A secondary goal of this study is to begin to describe the role of the natural environment in the lives of college-educated young adults. Through a modified snowball sampling technique using electronic mail and …
The Resilient Turn: College Students' Perspectives - A Phenomenological Inquiry, Perah Kessman
The Resilient Turn: College Students' Perspectives - A Phenomenological Inquiry, Perah Kessman
Educational Studies Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenology was designed to explore with a sample of undergraduate students in psychology-related majors their perceptions of psychological resilience and the factors they believe contributed to it. While previous studies have examined the construct of resilience in childhood and adolescence, relatively little is known about the phenomenon later in the lifespan. Thus, the rationale for the study stems from the researcher’s wish to fill this gap in knowledge by studying resilience among emerging adults. It was the researcher’s assumption that the knowledge generated from this study would both provide new insights into emerging adult resilience and inform higher …
Shadow Work In Support Of The Adult Developmental Journey, Robin Gregory Mclaughlin
Shadow Work In Support Of The Adult Developmental Journey, Robin Gregory Mclaughlin
Educational Studies Dissertations
In his book, In over our heads: the mental demands of modern life, Kegan (1994) has suggested that the average level of adults’ thinking is more complex today than at previous times in history. This is due, in part, to our increased lifespans, which have enabled complex thinking to evolve and emerge. However, Kegan has also suggested that the demands of the social environment are expanding much faster than the average complexity of adult thinking and learning. In Kegan’s terms, we are “in over our heads.” Using a semi-clinical, semi-structured, qualitative interview with twenty adult learners, this study investigated the …

Engagement Differences For 2-Year-Olds Identified As Late Talker, Brianna E. Hendrickson, Shari L. Deveney
Special Education and Communication Disorders Faculty Publications
The investigators compared engagement in language-rich activities for 2-year-olds identified as late talkers and their typically developing peers. Participants included twelve 2-year-old children ranging in age from 24- to 33-months of age (M = 27 months; SD= 2.906), three were identified as being typically developing, five were identified as having expressive-only language delay, and four were identified as having expressive and receptive language delay. From videotaped interactions, child behaviors were coded as unengaged (e.g., uninvolved with any specific people, objects, or symbols), onlooking (e.g., watching researcher or parent activity, but not taking part), person engaged (e.g., involved solely …
Spare The Rod, Endanger The Child? Strain, Race/Ethnicity, And Serious Delinquency, Ryan E. Spohn
Spare The Rod, Endanger The Child? Strain, Race/Ethnicity, And Serious Delinquency, Ryan E. Spohn
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
General strain theory has evolved into a comprehensive theory of delinquency by incorporating factors that condition the relationship between strain and delinquency as well as acknowledging the subjective nature of strain. This study advances general strain theory by examining the conditioning role of race and the manner in which race influences the subjective experience of strain. Examining a nationally representative sample of adolescents, this study finds that ethnic minorities generally experience greater strain. However, the effect of strain is not consistently more criminogenic for ethnic minorities. Our research suggests that the impact of strain on delinquency is conditioned by the …
Classroom Management And The Librarian, Heidi Blackburn, Lauren Hays
Classroom Management And The Librarian, Heidi Blackburn, Lauren Hays
Criss Library Faculty Publications
As librarians take on more instructional responsibilities, the need for classroom management skills becomes vital. Unfortunately, classroom management skills are not taught in library school and therefore, many librarians are forced to learn how to manage a classroom on the job. Different classroom settings such as one-shot instruction sessions and for-credit courses require different management techniques. Also, individuals are often more comfortable with certain strategies compared to other strategies for managing a classroom. With different course settings and personalities of instructors the need to learn classroom management strategies must be recognized for its importance in successful classes taught by librarians.
Numerical Simulation Of Nonoptimal Dynamic Equilibrium Models, Zhigang Feng, Jianjun Miao, Adrian Peralta-Alva, Manuel S. Santos
Numerical Simulation Of Nonoptimal Dynamic Equilibrium Models, Zhigang Feng, Jianjun Miao, Adrian Peralta-Alva, Manuel S. Santos
Economics Faculty Publications
In this paper we propose a recursive equilibrium algorithm for the numerical simulation of nonoptimal dynamic economies. This algorithm builds upon a convergent operator over an expanded set of state variables. The fixed point of this operator defines the set of all Markovian equilibria. We study approximation properties of the operator. We also apply our recursive equilibrium algorithm to various models with heterogeneous agents, incomplete financial markets, endogenous and exogenous borrowing constraints, taxes, and money.
