What happens to these young victims? A homeless or runaway juvenile is befriended by someone, then plied with drugs and/or alcohol. This is where the trafficker begins to exert control over the victim. The victims are given food and shelter. Sex is expected in return. At this point the trafficker has established trust with the victim, misguided as it may be. Then, Stockholm syndrome begins to set in. This is where victims protect the trafficker for fear of losing access to drugs, food, shelter or money. The victims also comply with their captors out of a sense of loyalty toward …

Research has shown that current legal policies of transfer of juveniles to adult court, harsh sentences, and intimidating educational programs do not 5 deter youthful crime. This study reports on a nonconfrontational pilot education program in the US juvenile justice system. In three urban high schools, an eight-week researcher-designed curriculum was delivered to three intervention classes totaling 125 at-risk students and three control classes totaling 100 at-risk students. Teachers in both groups administered 10 pretest and posttest surveys. Descriptive statistics showed substantial knowledge gains for the intervention group, from 14.2 to 35.7% in all subdomains, and −7.2 to 21.4% gains …

Many women enrolled in college experience rape and other forms of sexual aggression. Afterwards, women must make sense of what occurred and often place a label on their experiences. Research indicates that even when the legal requirements for rape are met, most women do not apply this label to their experiences. This study examines predictors of labeling an incident of sexual aggression as being rape, using data that was collected from university women as part of a longitudinal study examining risk and protective factors related to sexual and relationship aggression. Drawing upon the authors’ experiences working in schools as teachers, teacher educators, researchers, and community members, this study utilizes a Critical Race Theory of education in examining the school-to-prison pipeline for black male students. In doing so, the authors highlight the particular role educators play in the school-to-prison pipeline, focusing particularly on how dispositions toward black males influence educator practices. Recommendations and future directions are provided on how education preparation programs can play a critical role in the transformation of black male schooling.

Learning Disabilities And Delinquent Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Comparison Of Those With And Without Comorbidity, Mary K. Evans, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard, Peter Simi

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research is inconclusive on whether adolescents with learning disabilities (LD) engage in more delinquency than adolescents without such deficits. Mixed results may result from a failure to account for the effects of co-occurring disabilities. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examines delinquency among adolescents without disabilities to youth with LD, Attention Disorder Symptoms (ADS), and comorbid LD/ADS. Results indicate no significant differences in property offenses, or alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use; however, youth with LD reported significantly more violence than non-disabled youth. Findings illustrate the heterogeneous effects various disabilities have on delinquent behavior. Future research and …

How patients used Addiction-Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (A-CHESS), a mobile health intervention, while quitting drinking is worthy exploring. This study is to explore A-CHESS use patterns prior to the initial lapse reported after discharge from inpatient detoxification programs. 142 patients with alcohol addiction from two treatment agencies in the U.S. were included. A comprehensive set of A-CHESS use measures were developed based on a three-level system use framework and three A-CHESS service categories. In latent profile analyses, three A-CHESS system use patterns-inactive, passive, and active users-were found. Compared to the passive users (with the highest chance of the initial …

How do faculty and graduate students provide input for collection development? How well have librarians understood the research needs of recently tenured faculty or recent graduates? Four librarians from four different collection areas- the humanities, the social sciences, and 2 unique areas in engineering- all set out to see if evaluating the collection against recent publications by faculty and students can foster stronger engagement between them and the subject collectors in their areas.

Reliability Of Eyewitness Reports To A Major Aviation Accident, Dave English, Michael Kuzel

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

There is a paucity of studies on the reliability of eyewitness reports to aviation crashes. We examine witness statements to a widely observed major airline accident to determine if reported accident investigator distrust of details in eyewitness reports is supported by empirical evidence. The extensive archival witness record (N > 300) of a wide-body airliner crash in clear daylight conditions is subjected to statistical analysis to test eyewitness reliability. Even with over 200 witnesses within a three square kilometre (1.6 square mile) area answering a binary observation question, the variance is sometimes high enough to preclude forming statistically significant conclusions …

Research Brief: "Fathering After Military Deployment: Parenting Challenges And Goals Of Fathers Of Young Children", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study was conducted in conjunction with the STRoNG Military Families program, and consisted of interviews with fathers of young children. It was found that deployed fathers shared similar issues upon reintegration, and many were interested in connecting with other deployed fathers to learn from their parenting experiences. Future research recommended highlighting that this sample was exclusively male and predominantly white, and acknowledged that the demographics of future studies should be expanded to include women and people of color. Likewise, a greater sample size from other armed forces branches is needed.
