Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention For Autism: Is It Actually More "Intensive" Than A Typical Child's Day?, Caitlyn B. Sorensen
Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention For Autism: Is It Actually More "Intensive" Than A Typical Child's Day?, Caitlyn B. Sorensen
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication, and excessive ritualistic and repetitive behavior. Numerous treatments for autism devised over the last half-century have proven ineffective, or have never been scientifically evaluated. Despite the state of the research, the most demonstrably effective treatment, Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention (EIBI), has been a target of much criticism, including accusations of being too intense. A large number of learning trials in relatively short periods of time supposedly induce children to have disordered stress responses. To explore the intensity of EIBI, behavior samples from children engaging …
Essays In Fiscal Policy, Edmund Lawrence Matecki
Essays In Fiscal Policy, Edmund Lawrence Matecki
Wayne State University Dissertations
Fiscal policy is investigated in two settings. First, a fully identified neoclassical growth model with rich fiscal policy rules is augmented with non-Ricardian consumers and fit to post-war U.S. data using Bayesian techniques. Allowing transfer payments to directly affect the consumption choices of rule-of-thumb agents permits a new interpretation of time series evidence regarding which fiscal instruments have historically financed government debt. The economic impact of fiscal adjustments is studied for two labor supply specifications. The first specification restricts labor supply by equalizing hours worked across household types. The second relaxes this assumption, allowing for intratemporal optimization by non-Ricardian households. …
Employee Pronoun Use In Verbatim Comments As A Predictor Of Job Attitudes And Turnover Intentions, Amy E. Sund
Employee Pronoun Use In Verbatim Comments As A Predictor Of Job Attitudes And Turnover Intentions, Amy E. Sund
Wayne State University Dissertations
It is common in employee attitude surveys to collect open ended comments from employees, yet this data remains largely under-utilized. In the present study, it is hypothesized that employee pronoun use is related to job attitudes and turnover intentions, such that the use of "we" type pronouns is higher among more satisfied employees; and that the use of "non-we" type pronouns is higher among less satisfied employees. Results largely did not support hypotheses - although "non-we" use was negative related to job attitudes, "we" use was also negative related. It is believed that the reason for the lack of findings …
Individual Differences In Pyschological Evaluations Of Electoral Risk: Furthering The Explanation Of The Gender Gap In Candidate Emergence, Jennie Sweet-Cushman
Individual Differences In Pyschological Evaluations Of Electoral Risk: Furthering The Explanation Of The Gender Gap In Candidate Emergence, Jennie Sweet-Cushman
Wayne State University Dissertations
Despite decades of movement towards gender parity in other aspects of American society (e.g. education, business), women remain significantly underrepresented in the political realm. Electoral bias against women cannot be blamed; when women run, women win. However, women don't seek political office in high numbers. This project builds on previous examinations of the gender gap in political ambition by proposing that a contributing factor to the likelihood someone will seek political office is their perception of electoral risk. While there have been no studies of gender-based differences in psychological response to electoral risk, differences in risk assessment have been documented …

ABSTRACT
EXAMINING THE COSTS OF PROVIDING AN ADEQUATE EDUCATION
FOR MICHIGAN'S K-12 PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS
by

Advisor: Dr. Michael F. Addonizio
Major: Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
Because the Federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which requires students to perform at predefined proficiency levels on state standardized testing instruments, adequate school funding has become arguably the single most important factor influencing the success of children in schools. Because State legislators are the one's primarily responsible for establishing annual budgets for K-12 public education, it is essential they are made aware …
Everyday Memory: An Expanded View Of Autobiographical Memory Functions, Jana Ranson
Everyday Memory: An Expanded View Of Autobiographical Memory Functions, Jana Ranson
Wayne State University Theses
The current study investigated an expanded set of everyday autobiographical memory (AM) functions as proposed by developers of the 7-function Child-Caregiver Reminiscence Scale (CRS) (Kulkofsky & Koh, 2009). The current study adapted the theoretical CRS for use with diverse, adult samples. Participants (N = 1841) from a large, urban university completed the CRS-A online over the course or two academic semesters. Validation analyses included EFA using principal axis factoring, CFA, MGCFA invariance testing, and MTMM tests of construct validity (convergent and discriminant) and method effects. Results yielded evidence for a 6- function (Conversation, Perspective-Taking, Relationship Maintenance, Behavioral Control/Teaching/Problem-Solving, Emotion Regulation, …
Defying Mandatory Motherhood: The Social Experiences Of Childfree Women, Braelin E. Settle
Defying Mandatory Motherhood: The Social Experiences Of Childfree Women, Braelin E. Settle
Wayne State University Theses
Research suggests motherhood is central to a woman's adult identity. In 2000, however, almost twice as many women ages 40-44 were childless than in 1980. Scholarship points to the social, economic, and attitudinal factors shaping the dramatic increase in the number of childfree women, many of whom are white, educated beyond high school, and upper-middle class. This qualitative case study focuses on the growing social phenomenon of childfree women in the United States. Using in-depth interviews, I examine the reasons behind women's decisions to remain childfree and the experiences of being childfree in their everyday lives. I focus on the …
Present Futures: Possibilities For Selfhood At A Community Mental Health Center In Detroit, Michigan, Talia Gordon
Present Futures: Possibilities For Selfhood At A Community Mental Health Center In Detroit, Michigan, Talia Gordon
Wayne State University Theses
Since the 1990s, recovery-oriented approaches to mental illness have become the dominant paradigm in contemporary U.S. non-clinical institutional settings. Central to the recovery paradigm is a discourse of self-determination that separates psychiatric pathology from personhood and expects those diagnosed to enact and manage themselves as autonomous subjects - as empowered, responsible, independent, and transformable. For many individuals, however, everyday experiences of illness are at odds with expectations for recovery, defined as a "process of change" through which the self is continuously worked upon and improved (SAMHSA 2011). One particularly popular non-clinical recovery modality is the Clubhouse model of psychosocial rehabilitation …

Social Networking, The Elderly, And The Ethical Life เครือข่ายทางสังคม ผู้สูงวัย และชีวิตจริยะ, Soraj Hongladarom
Journal of Social Sciences
Except for very poor economies, societies around the world are aging rapidly. The use of the Internet and social networking sites is also widespread in these areas. This raises an interesting questions about how the increasingly aging population in these societies is using the social media and how the latter contribute to the well-being of the former. This paper argues that in order to fully understand the implications behind the phenomenon, a theoretical and ethical approach is needed to pay a particular attention to the concrete realities of the elderly in society and base its conclusions on what constitutes the …

After a few decades of globalization, in the field of public policy studies, there is the emergence of an explanation for policy decision-making phenomena among the process of internationalization of politics, in which each country has searched for an effective policy-making model from around the world. The questions are, for example, why one state should transfer policy from another one or what the process of policy transfer and learning is. Such an approach is called 'policy transfer' study. The main objective of this paper, therefore, is to study public policy transfer phenomenon based on policy learning from foreign countries and …

Globalisation Leading To Development Or Crisis In Thailand โลกาภิวัตน์กับการพัฒนาหรือความเสี่ยงใน ประเทศไทย, Kunphatu Sakwit
Journal of Social Sciences
This paper is the excerpt from the Master's dissertation which aims to address whether globalisation leads to development or risk in Thailand by adapting mainly Ulrich Beck's theory of risk society with practical cases in Thailand. The practical case that is going to be discussed represents dimensions of environmental politics (Map Ta Phut). The case also contains relevant perceptions of imminent aspects of development as well as aspects of risk. With respect to risk, prominent elements of theory of risk society will be examined through the cases. The principal methodology is critical discourse analysis which can be seen through patterns …

Journal of Social Sciences
The confrontation between the Chinese and the Philippines' navy in 1995, also known as the Mischief Reef Incident, reflected the intentions and military capabilities of the Chinese army, and, perhaps, triggered the threat perception of the Philippines' decision makers. Embracing the notion of American- external balancing seems to be the rational choice for the Philippines, according to the ongoing disputes as well as China's aggressiveness towards the conflicts in the South China Sea. Furthermore, the China's threat perceived by the Philippines perspective also tallies with the ีus. perception, considering the rise of China, politically and economically, will undermine the us …

Journal of Social Sciences
This paper delineates debates on concepts of multiculturalism and gender between a proponent of multiculturalism and liberal feminists in Western society. It also elaborates our understandings on multiculturalism in relation to gender, sexualities and sexual diversities in Thai society. Findings show that there appears little attention to apply the concept of multiculturalism for studies on gender and sexual diversities in Thai society. Concepts such as subculture, lifestyle, rights on sexual diversities, and social movement have rather been utilized. This paper proposes that studies on multiculturalism in Thai society should not limit an interest merely on an acceptance on cultural differences …

Individuals and society are regulated by normality and decency. "Sexual" discipline or the frame of normality manipulates people's body which is materialized by the "normative" masculinity and "normative" femininity. However, the ways that Thai people has mainly criticized YingluckShinawatra's image indicates that they are short of the understanding of gender and sexuality in the Thai political space. This article then aims to explain that the prejudice against Yingluck is the result of masculinebased judgment, together with anti-Thaksinism-based bias and discrimination against Shinawatra family and its alliance. Therefore, it can be interpreted that by being the Prime Minister, Yingluck has redefined …

Though international relations (IR) as a field of study intends to construct knowledge of cooperation and conflicts between states, it is undeniable that, in current world politics, there are non-state actors that comprise world citizens who have gathered to voice and protect public interests, as well as to make changes in public policies, in the name of "social movements." That is because state and foreign policies are explicit decisions and commitments portrayed by authorized representatives of the states. Apart from domestic social movements, there are also transnational social movements, such as Amnesty International and Human Right Watch, along with terrorism …

To address the need for more information concerning hospital decision making, we conducted in-depth interviews among African Americans with heart failure and their family caregivers (n=11 dyads). Using a case scenario, we asked participants about their anticipated hospitalization decisions. Most patients indicated that they would seek care to avoid further deterioration or death from their worsening condition. Many family caregivers anticipated having an active influence on hospitalization decisions. Findings suggest that social workers should encourage the development of adequate home-based services, recognize diverse communication styles, and use this information to facilitate medical decision making by these patients and …

While a number of organizations and government entities have encouraged the development of more “age-friendly” environments, to date there has been limited research linking these environment features to elder outcomes. Using a representative sample of older adults living in Detroit, this study examined the association between age-friendly environment factors and self-rated health. Results indicated that access to health care, social support, and community engagement were each associated with better self-rated health, while neighborhood problems were associated with poorer self-rated health. Moreover, individual-level income and education no longer predicted self-rated health once age-friendly environment factors were taken into account. These findings …

Although statutory rape laws were initially developed to protect youth from coercion by adults, youth are sometimes also prosecuted under these laws. This article investigates public attitudes regarding sanctions for youth engaging in sexual behaviors with peers. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to determine if age and gender of the offending youth, and sexual orientation of the relationship, has an impact on the public's level of agreement for sanctioning youth for three types of sexual behavior: intercourse, oral sex, or touching. The study participants (N= 757) were drawn from the general population of adult Michigan residents; the sample was racially representative …

Every day, children and adolescents worldwide return to the educational setting having sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The possible negative consequences of TBI range from mild to severe and include neurological, cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral difficulties. Within the school setting, the negative effects of TBI tend to persist or worsen over time, often resulting in academic and social difficulties that require formal and informal educational assistance and support. School psychologists and other educational professionals are well-positioned to help ensure students with TBI receive this assistance and support.

Christensen and Prout (2002) explain, "The task of the social scientist is to work for the right of people to have a voice and to be heard. In the case of children, `age' is perhaps one of the most dominant factors used to discriminate against children being heard and listened to" (p. 483). And in the case of children experiencing neglect or abuse, the opportunity for them to be heard is even more limited. This project analyzes data from the National Runway Safeline - one place where children's voice can be heard. NRS, established in 1971, offers confidential and anonymous …
