Evaluating Scholarly Book Publishers—A Case Study In The Field Of Journalism., Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

By adapting multiple metrics used for journal article evaluation and replicating recent publisher metrics, the authors tested methods for evaluating scholarly book publishers. Using monographs published in journalism between 2007 and 2011 as a test case, results indicate these methods may be useful to other scholarly disciplines.

The Role Of The Infralimbic Cortex In A Pain Intensity-Graded Rodent Model Of Distraction Analgesia, Christopher T. Mcnabb Jan 2014

The Role Of The Infralimbic Cortex In A Pain Intensity-Graded Rodent Model Of Distraction Analgesia, Christopher T. Mcnabb

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

The misdirection of attention has been used to reduce experimental and clinical pain- a technique known as distraction analgesia (DA). A growing understanding of the important interrelationship between cognition and pain has prompted the need for a deeper understanding of its neural substrates. There is evidence implicating the infralimbic cortex of the rat brain as a putative mediator of DA, but this has never been directly tested. Therefore, this study investigated the role of the infralimbic cortex (IL) in a rat model of DA at high- and low-intensity pain. One hundred fifty two Sprague Dawley rats underwent stereotaxic surgery to …

The Local Field Potential In The Medial Prefrontal Cortex In Respose To Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, Ailing Li Jan 2014

The Local Field Potential In The Medial Prefrontal Cortex In Respose To Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, Ailing Li

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Nociceptive stimuli can activate peripheral nociceptors to produce nociceptive signals which can be projected to the spinal cord and further up to the thalamus and many other cortical and subcortical areas through ascending pathways. Nociceptive information can be processed in various brain areas (e.g., somatosensory cortex and anterior cingulate cortex); it can change activities in those brain areas and eventually result in morphological changes following long-term stimulation. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been proven to be involved in higher cognitive functions and emotional processing. It receives projections from brain areas that are involved in nociception. Morphological changes of the …

Hyrbid Brainwriting: The Efficacy Of Alternating Between Individual And Group Brainstorming And The Effect Of Individual Difference Variables, Runa Korde

Psychology Dissertations - Archive

Three studies were designed to test the efficacy of hybrid brainwriting procedures as compared to the traditional individual and group brainstorming. The hybrid brainwriting procedures were designed by alternating between individual and group ideation. The first study examined the effect of two hybrid procedures on quantity as compared to the individual brainstorming procedure. Starting the hybrid process with an individual brainstorming phase (AGAG) produced slightly more ideas than doing so with a group phase (GAGA). This hybrid condition (AGAG) was also significantly better than the alone condition. A second study was designed to compare the hybrid conditions to a group …

An Analysis Of Military Sexual Assault And Subsequent Punishment, Christina Durham Jan 2014

An Analysis Of Military Sexual Assault And Subsequent Punishment, Christina Durham

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

In recent years, national attention has been drawn to the issue of sexual assault in the military. This is largely in part due to the number of reported offenses increasing each year, jumping 50% between 2012 and 2013 alone (DoD, 2013). Research has shown sexual assault offenses are greatly underreported and that the victimization rates among service members are higher than those of civilians (Turchik & Wilson, 2010). Past research efforts to understand why sexual assaults are so prevalent in the military have focused heavily on the victim and the effectiveness of preventative programs (Turchick & Wilson, 2010). Additionally, theories …

Worth area involved in the aid of victims of domestic minor sex trafficking. A non-probability …

Modeling Collapse: Analysis Of The Bronze Age-Iron Age Transition At Two Near Eastern Sites, William Nutt Jan 2014

Modeling Collapse: Analysis Of The Bronze Age-Iron Age Transition At Two Near Eastern Sites, William Nutt

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

This project tests a three-step model for archaeological collapse, by analyzing assemblages from two museum collections, Alisar Hüyük and Tell el Fakhariyah. Focusing on three categories of artifacts, namely biological remains, tools and weapons, and objects of personal adornment, the model evaluates change over a brief time in order to investigate the transitional period during a collapse. As the sites used for this research were excavated during the first half of the twentieth century, the project assesses the possible utility of old museum collections in light of probable biases.

Growing Community By Growing Food: A Comparative Study Of Two Community Gardens In North Texas, Rebekah Rupel Jan 2014

Growing Community By Growing Food: A Comparative Study Of Two Community Gardens In North Texas, Rebekah Rupel

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

Community Gardens are a burgeoning trend in the U.S., blooming in many different cities and for different reasons including social activism, sustainability, health, education, ecology, and community. Their popularity also reflects a current trend where people are more attentive to their relationship with food and concerned about where it comes from. This thesis examines two community gardens in North Texas, University of Texas at Arlington Community Garden in Arlington and Deep Ellum Urban Garden in Dallas. Despite community gardens' popularity, no studies on community gardens have been done in Texas. However, North Texas is home to the 4th largest metropolitan …

Legislating Innovation: Why Charter Schools Can't Fix Public Education, Richard Cordrey Jan 2014

Legislating Innovation: Why Charter Schools Can't Fix Public Education, Richard Cordrey

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

How do we account for the fact that, despite myriad school reform and counterbalancing resistance efforts, the education system in America seems to be in a constant state of disrepair? Some observers attribute this to the introduction of accountability measures and voucher programs, while others claim that common curriculum standards, and accompanying standardized tests, are to blame. In the face of constant opposition to non-traditional educational venues by various special interest groups, there are a growing number of educational leaders opening schools that aim to challenge institutional norms and ever-growing numbers of parents choosing to enroll their children in those …

Motivating Martial Artists: An Examination Of The Drives And Lessons Learned Among Taekwondo Students, Gordon M. Block

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

There are a large number of martial art schools operating in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area, teaching a variety of martial arts. Of all of those schools the students at the Texas Black Belt Academy chose their school, despite a lengthy travel time for some of the students. In an effort to find out why the students chose this particular school, I joined and investigated the Texas Black Belt Academy, investigating what the students were getting out of both the lessons and environment of the school. I found that the students came most often to learn self-defense, however they stayed for …

Discourses Of Inter-Expertise Creative Collaborative Performance In The Terra Nova Of Dublin’S Science Gallery, Diane Tangney, Olivia Freeman, Brendan O'Rourke

Conference papers

Discourses of creativity tempt us with promises of treasures from terra incognito (Cox, 2005). Creativity is central to the enterprise culture of our age and there is a dark side to such temptations (O'Rourke, 2010;Osborne, 2003; Rehn & De Cock, 2009). Creativity’s role in the enterprise culture may mean that like other aspects of enterprise culture, though many are called, few are chosen (Ainsworth & Hardy, 2008). This paper presents preliminary findings on data deriving from a larger project investigating creativity on the interactions between some special people that might be expected to be particularly creative (discipline experts from different …

Servant-Leadership Priorities Within American And South Korean Cultures, Scott Lincoln Jan 2014

Servant-Leadership Priorities Within American And South Korean Cultures, Scott Lincoln

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Although servant-leadership is not a fundamentally new idea, it has received more attention in the last few decades. While the concept has a number of proponents in the Western world, there is a paucity of research on how acceptable its tenets are for Asian audiences. Certain studies (Winston and Ryan 2008; Trompenaars and Voerman 2010) purport that servant-leadership is a leadership style that can be applied globally in various cultural contexts. However, on the face of it, this seems to contradict the central idea of culturally endorsed implicit leadership theories put forward by the venerable GLOBE study (House et al. …

Student Scholarship In Institutional Repositories, Elizabeth Hertenstein Jan 2014

Student Scholarship In Institutional Repositories, Elizabeth Hertenstein

University Libraries Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION Research on institutional repositories (IR) has primarily focused on issues related to faculty scholarship. Thus far, little has been written on issues related to student scholarship. This lack is problematic for planners developing or extending their IR content who may be considering adding student scholarship. METHODS A 23-question survey of library professionals was conducted to explore size of institution, existence of an IR, IR software packages utilized, individuals involved in system management, levels of support for inclusion of student work in IRs, types of student work included, and workflow submission policies. RESULTS The findings present an environmental scan of …

African American Families' Expectations And Intentions For Mental Health Services, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Richard Thompson, Barbara L. Dancy, Tisha R. A. Wiley, Sylvia P. Perry, Jason Wallis, Yara Mekawi, Kathleen Knafl Jan 2014

African American Families' Expectations And Intentions For Mental Health Services, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Richard Thompson, Barbara L. Dancy, Tisha R. A. Wiley, Sylvia P. Perry, Jason Wallis, Yara Mekawi, Kathleen Knafl

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

A cross-sectional qualitative descriptive design was used to examine the links among expectations about, experiences with, and intentions toward mental health services. Individual face-to-face interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 32 African American youth/mothers dyads. Content analysis revealed that positive expectations were linked to positive experiences and intentions, that negative expectations were not consistently linked to negative experiences or intentions, nor were ambivalent expectations linked to ambivalent experiences or intentions. Youth were concerned about privacy breeches and mothers about the harmfulness of psychotropic medication. Addressing these concerns may promote African Americans’ engagement in mental health services.

The authors trace the compromise of human dignity that accompanies one shelter’s effort to help clients fulfill their human right to housing.

Political Battles On Women’S Bodies: Post-Election Conflicts And Violence Against Women In Internally Displaced Persons Camps In Kenya, Roseanne Njeri Njiru Jan 2014

Political Battles On Women’S Bodies: Post-Election Conflicts And Violence Against Women In Internally Displaced Persons Camps In Kenya, Roseanne Njeri Njiru

Societies Without Borders

The Kenya 2007 December presidential election results were violently challenged. For months, political protests accompanied by violent attacks and violent reaction by government security forces, led to “ethnic cleansing” particularly in the Rift Valley region resulting in deaths of more than 1,500 people and internal displacement of about 450,000 others. Women and young girls experienced various forms of gender violence during and after the conflicts in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. Using in-depth interviews with women living in a camp, NGOs and government agencies, this article focuses on the continuing bodily violence that internally displaced women face in their everyday …

Insiderness, Outsiderness, And Situated Accessibility – How Women Activists Navigate Un’S Commission On The Status Of Women, Daniela Jauk

Societies Without Borders

The goal of this article is to explain micro-political aspects of women’s participation within the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) by explicating how NonGovernmental Organization’s (NGO) representatives negotiate and perceive their work. Data from ethnographic participant observation of CSW meetings between 2009 and 2012 demonstrate the simultaneity of both clear insider/outsider distinctions as well as blurred and permeable boundaries between the intergovernmental body of the CSW and civil society in the form of women’s rights activists who attempt to shape CSW outcomes. Concepts of fluid insiderness and outsiderness (Naples 1996) help explain that women activists perceive themselves simultaneously …

Pride In Istanbul, Susan C. Pearce Jan 2014

Pride In Istanbul, Susan C. Pearce

Societies Without Borders

In June of 2013, Istanbul, Turkey held its annual Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Pride parade. This year’s parade was performed in a particular historical context: in the midst of an anti-government uprising that had begun in Istanbul and spread throughout Turkey. This context loaned a particular flavor to the Pride parade, and there was a reciprocity between the recent protest movement and LGBT activism. These field notes describe the June 2013 parade and its relationship to the socio-political context, drawing from these observations some preliminary conclusions regarding human rights and gender as Turkey interacts with transnational human rights regimes such …
