The Effects Of Holistic Coping Strategies On Perceived Stress And Absenteeism In Hospital Nurses, Mary Alice Ayon

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The demanding work environments of professional nurses often contribute to high levels of stress that impact their professional practice and well-being. Although there is a significant amount of research regarding stress and absenteeism, a gap in the literature exists about the effects of holistic coping strategies on nurses' perceived stress and absenteeism. Based on the biopsychosocial model, the purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate effects of holistic coping strategies on perceived stress and absenteeism in 128 hospital nurses. An online cross-sectional survey design used the Perceived Stress Scale-10 to measure nurses' perceptions of stress. The independent grouping variable …

The General Abilities Index As A Third Method Of Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities, Kristin M. Sims-Cutler Jan 2014

The General Abilities Index As A Third Method Of Diagnosing Specific Learning Disabilities, Kristin M. Sims-Cutler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many studies have investigated problems with the ability achievement discrepancy (AAD) method of diagnosing specific learning disabilities (SLDs). The definition of an SLD includes the presence of a deficit in one or more cognitive processing systems. Researchers in other studies found that the AAD method overdiagnoses English language learners and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and underdiagnoses students with cognitive processing deficits. Although SLD diagnostic methods have been widely researched, much less information is available regarding SLD diagnostic methods that predict important student outcomes, such as high school completion. The General Abilities Index (GAI) is an SLD diagnostic method that …

Attitudes, Experiences, And Perceptions Of Rural Christian Counselors With Regard To Self-Care, Theresa Grant White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Rural Christian counselors are a distinct group of individuals faced with unique personal and professional challenges. Researchers have indicated that rural counselors experience a higher burnout rate due to wide practice scope; client stigma against receiving help; and physical isolation, making supervision, consultation, and referral difficult. Studies also show that self-care is an effective defense against the symptoms of burnout. Self-care is defined as any legal activity that promotes wellness and brings physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual balance. The central research question of this hermeneutic phenomenology examined the attitudes, perceptions, and experiences of rural Christian counselors with regard to self-care. …

Grounded Labels From The Behavioral International Economic Development Growth Path Model On Economic Development Patterns From 2002-2012, Kenneth Thomas Davis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Economic models generally fail to adequately measure positive and negative growth paths in development through agrarian, industry, and service economies. The purpose of this grounded theory study was to design a new model that could accommodate both directions of growth and better measure development paths with particular attention to labors contributions. The theoretical foundation for this study was Walt Whitman Rostow's 5 economic stages of growth classifications. This Study attempted to find the most common economic growth path. While most development models use three to five classifications, this study used nine new classifications giving it a unique and specific look …

Multiple assessment tools measure PTSD. Participants used the PCL-M, or the SCID. I used the CAPS to supplement these assessments. None of these is usually taught to graduate social work students despite requirement changes from the NASW and the CSWE (2010, 2012). I had two aims. The first was to train me in psychometric assessment tools, specifically the CAPS. The second aim was to determine whether participants received a positive diagnosis of PTSD from one measure but not the CAPS, or vice versa. I learned to confidently give clinical assessments to participants from various demographic backgrounds. Findings in this study …

Peer Victimization And The Comt Val158met Polymorphism: A Differential Susceptability Model, Erin Q. Boyd

Psychology Theses - Archive

The link between peer victimization and various health related negative outcomes ranging from physical to psychological has been well established in the literature (Hodges & Perry, 1999; Rigby, 2001). While there are many individual differences in the observed relationship, few have explored the role of Catechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) gene, val158met, within this relationship. Prior research has shown that COMT is involved in altered stress reactivity, internalizing problems, and poor health outcomes (Armbruster et al., 2012; Hagen et al., 2006; Reuter & Hennig, 2005). This thesis explored the influence of the COMT gene on the relationship between peer victimization and adverse …

Engaging Families In Literacy Education, Karin Marie Havens

Social Work Theses - Archive

Parent/caregiver participation is an essential component of the literacy education process. Current school-directed methods of involving parents/caregivers have shown inconsistent results regarding student literacy outcomes. Parent/caregiver-directed, collaborative efforts that engage families, teachers, and other school professionals ensure that parents/caregivers are invested in educational outcomes for their children. Charter schools, growing in popularity in the United States, are required to meet standards but are awarded flexibility with curriculum and implementation practices. For this reason, charter schools have the ability to experiment with new and groundbreaking practices to improve literacy education. The purpose of this study was to explore family engagement in …

Social Work Faculty Publications & Presentations-Archive

Neuroimaging studies of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-related memory impairments have consistently implicated abnormal activities in the frontal and parietal lobes. However, most studies have used block designs and could not dissociate the multiple phases of working memory. In this study, the involvement of the prefrontal cortex in working memory phases was assessed among veterans with PTSD and age-/ gender-matched healthy controls. Multichannel functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was utilized to measure prefrontal cortex hemodynamic activations during memory of neutral (i.e., not trauma-related) forward and backward digit span tasks. An event-related experimental design was utilized to dissociate the different phases (i.e., …

Swahili Word Order Choices: Insights From Information Structure, Mohamed Yusuf Mwamzandi Jan 2014

Swahili Word Order Choices: Insights From Information Structure, Mohamed Yusuf Mwamzandi

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Cross-linguistic pragmatic studies have shown non-canonical word order can often be explained if information structure is taken into consideration. This dissertation explores word order variation in Swahili (SVO, Bantu) adnominal demonstratives and reciprocal constructions under the auspices of information structure. I investigate how the notion of topic may explain word order variation in these two structures. The term `adnominal demonstrative' refers to demonstratives that co-occur with nouns such as huyu mtu `this person' as distinguished from pronominal demonstratives such as huyu `this'. The issue to be determined is what influences the demonstrative use in pre or postnominal position. The data consists …
