Requiring Pollutant Discharge Permits For Pesticide Applications That Deposit Residues In Surface Waters, Terence J. Centner, Nicholas Eberhart Jan 2014

Requiring Pollutant Discharge Permits For Pesticide Applications That Deposit Residues In Surface Waters, Terence J. Centner, Nicholas Eberhart

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Agricultural producers and public health authorities apply pesticides to control pests that damage crops and carry diseases. Due to the toxic nature of most pesticides, they are regulated by governments. Regulatory provisions require pesticides to be registered and restrictions operate to safeguard human health and the environment. Yet pesticides used near surface waters pose dangers to non-target species and drinking water supplies leading some governments to regulate discharges of pesticides under pollution discharge permits. The dual registration and discharge permitting provisions are burdensome. In the United States, agricultural interest groups are advancing new legislation that would exempt pesticide residues from …

A convenience sample (N = 327) was taken from various sectors, for example retail, banking, mining, police service, and the municipality. The study aimed to test the mediating role of separation in the relation between adverse acculturation conditions and wellbeing as measured by ill-health and intentions to quit. …

Medicaid Reimbursement For Naloxone: A Toolkit For Advocates, Naomi Seiler, Katie B. Horton, Mary-Beth Malcarney

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Naloxone is an opioid antagonist drug used to counter the effects of an opiate overdose. It can be administered in medical settings, such as an emergency room, or prescribed as a take‑home medication to be used in case of an emergency. Currently, most types of insurance will cover and reimburse for naloxone administered directly in a medical setting. However, coverage of prescription take‑home naloxone is limited. The Medicaid program provides health insurance for a large and growing number of Americans. Therefore, securing coverage for take‑home naloxone—including costs of counseling/training and for the medicine itself—within Medicaid should be a critical priority …

Women, Leadership And The Enlisted Military, Nicole Lillis Jan 2014

Women, Leadership And The Enlisted Military, Nicole Lillis

Theses and Graduate Projects

The military has changed dramatically over the years involving more active roles for women in leadership positions, regardless of combat experience. According to the Department of Defense,7.4 million people serve in today's military and 15 percent of them are women (DOD, 2013). There are 1.2 million enlisted personnel, 250,000 of that number are officers (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013). Yet, relatively little research has been conducted on enlisted personnel in leadership roles, and virtually none regarding female enlisted leadership. Recent studies have shown that females face barriers in the military due to their gender and perceived stereotypes. Current literature often …

Remote Employee Engagement, Craig A. Dischinger

Theses and Graduate Projects

This action research project looks at employee engagement among geographically dispersed teams. The goal of this research is to better understand the theory of engagement and develop a methodology for increasing engagement for teams and individuals that work in a location outside of a main headquarters environment. The focus of this study involves three distinctly different teams. Each team has a unique headquarters environment, but shares the same responsibility of ensuring a safe and secure environment through the leadership and execution of a physical security program. Collaborative Leadership: Jane Addams And Her Circle Of Friends, Sheila V. Davies Jan 2014

Collaborative Leadership: Jane Addams And Her Circle Of Friends, Sheila V. Davies

Theses and Graduate Projects

Collaboration and collaborative leadership are terms used often in current leadership language. Whether in private or public enterprises, collaboration has become a "catch word" that elicits ideas of shared ownership and effective problem solving. Collaborative leadership could be a "stand alone" leadership style or it could incorporate other leadership styles to prove most effective. The manner in which it is used depends, in part, on who is using it and for what purpose. Jane Addams, a progressive leader in the early twentieth century, used collaborative leadership effectively in her social change efforts. Together with Julia Lathrop, Florence Kelley, Alice Hamilton …

A Step Toward Authentic Leadership Through The Kaleidoscopic Lens Of Self-Awareness, Melodie Lane Jan 2014

A Step Toward Authentic Leadership Through The Kaleidoscopic Lens Of Self-Awareness, Melodie Lane

Theses and Graduate Projects

During the past 15 years, corporate scandals such as Enron, significant failures in the mortgage and banking industries, and the more recent economic crisis have resulted in skepticism and distrust for many of today's leaders (Erickson, 1995, Northouse,2010; May, Hodges, Chan & Avolio,2003). Numerous leadership authors have "called for a new type of genuine and values-based leadership" - Authentic leadership (Gardner, Cogliser, Davis, & Dickens, 2A11). Society wants "leaders who do not deny responsibility, hide information, and deceive others, but rather lead with authenticity and integrity" (Peus, Wesche, Streicher, Braun & Frey , 2011 , p. 331). Self-awareness is an …

Intergenerational Transmission Of Emotion Dysregulation Through Parental Invalidation Of Emotions: Implications For Adolescent Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors, Kelly E. Buckholdt, Gilbert R. Parra, Lisa Jobe-Shields Jan 2014

Intergenerational Transmission Of Emotion Dysregulation Through Parental Invalidation Of Emotions: Implications For Adolescent Internalizing And Externalizing Behaviors, Kelly E. Buckholdt, Gilbert R. Parra, Lisa Jobe-Shields

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

We examined parent emotion dysregulation as part of a model of family emotion-related processes and adolescent psychopathology. Participants were 80 parent– adolescent dyads (mean age = 13.6; 79 % African-American and 17 % Caucasian) with diverse family composition and socioeconomic status. Parent and adolescent dyads self-reported on their emotion regulation difficulties and adolescents reported on their perceptions of parent invalidation (i.e., punishment and neglect) of emotions and their own internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Results showed that parents who reported higher levels of emotion dysregulation tended to invalidate their adolescent’s emotional expressions more often, which in turn related to higher levels …

Balancing Preservation And Promotion Of Natural Resources: A Case Study Of Newaygo County, Michigan, Jeffrey Koch Jan 2014

Balancing Preservation And Promotion Of Natural Resources: A Case Study Of Newaygo County, Michigan, Jeffrey Koch

Student Research – Stevenson Center

Natural resource management (NRM) involves a multitude of levels and interests. Options for sustainable management must involve all stakeholders and balance levels of decision-makers, whether local, regional, or national. No one-size-fits-all approach applies to NRM; instead, co-management of resources and multi-stakeholder collaborations assist in achieving sustainable solutions, given the multiple interest groups involved in the commons. Through good governance, flexibility to change, and community engagement efforts, NRM has a better chance for success and sustainability.

Clearly, natural resources cross governmental boundaries and jurisdictions, and NRM strategies must compensate for this dynamic. The region of West Michigan contains a wealth of …

“To Fly Is More Fascinating Than To Read About Flying”: British R.F.C. Memoirs Of The First World War, 1918-1939, Ian A. Isherwood Jan 2014

“To Fly Is More Fascinating Than To Read About Flying”: British R.F.C. Memoirs Of The First World War, 1918-1939, Ian A. Isherwood

Civil War Institute Faculty Publications

Literature concerning aerial warfare was a new genre created by the First World War. With manned flight in its infancy, there were no significant novels or memoirs of pilots in combat before 1914. It was apparent to British publishers during the war that the new technology afforded a unique perspective on the battlefield, one that was practically made for an expanding literary marketplace. As such former Royal Flying Corps pilots created a new type of war book, one written by authors self-described as “Knights in the Air”, a literary mythology carefully constructed by pilots and publishers and propagated in the …

The Divergence Of Modern Jurisprudence From The Original Intent For Federalist And Tenth Amendment Limitations On The Treaty Power, Steven T. Voigt Jan 2014

The Divergence Of Modern Jurisprudence From The Original Intent For Federalist And Tenth Amendment Limitations On The Treaty Power, Steven T. Voigt

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “That the federal treaty-making authority is constrained by the other parts of the Constitution does not sound like the stuff of law journals. It seems like common sense. After all, we would not expect someone to argue that the ability to “regulate Commerce” entitles Congress to disregard the Third Amendment and quarter soldiers in our houses. We would not expect to see an argument that the power to “establish Post Offices” enables Congress to disregard the freedom of the press in the First Amendment. So, why is the Tenth Amendment so fully disregarded with respect to treaties?”

Occupy Wall Street, Distributive Justice, And Tax Scholarship: An Ideology Critique Of The Consumption Tax Debate, Partrick Crawford Jan 2014

Occupy Wall Street, Distributive Justice, And Tax Scholarship: An Ideology Critique Of The Consumption Tax Debate, Partrick Crawford

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “This Article argues that the pro-consumption tax literature is wrong to claim that no legitimate fairness objections to the consumption tax exist. It argues that the persistent and widespread wariness about replacing our current hybrid consumption tax/income tax system with a pure consumption tax is, contrary to what the pro-consumption tax literature asserts, completely justified. In fact, our reservations about the consumption tax’s fairness reflect legitimate concern about the role of capitalist power in America, particularly over the past thirty years. Indeed, the more the nation continues to experience the social welfare effects of increased capitalist power, the more …

Where’S The Consultation? The War Powers Resolution And Libya, Eileen Burgin Jan 2014

Where’S The Consultation? The War Powers Resolution And Libya, Eileen Burgin

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “President Barack Obama triggered a War Powers Resolution (WPR) controversy with his military response to the anti-government rebellion and civil war in Libya in 2011. Members of Congress seized upon the WPR, questioning whether the Obama administration had complied with the WPR’s requirements when the United States launched the initial Libyan Operation Odyssey Dawn (OOD) and subsequently participated in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Operation Unified Protector (OUP). Many legislators charged that President Obama had violated the WPR. Concerns centered on such issues as presidential reliance on the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council—rather than Congress—for authorization to act, …

Who Benefits From Environmental Regulation? Evidence From The Clean Air Act Amendments, Antonio Bento, Matthew Freedman, Corey Lang Jan 2014

Who Benefits From Environmental Regulation? Evidence From The Clean Air Act Amendments, Antonio Bento, Matthew Freedman, Corey Lang

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications

Using geographically disaggregated data and exploiting an instrumental variable strategy, we show that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the benefits of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) were progressive. The CAAA created incentives for local regulators to target the initially dirtiest areas for cleanup, creating heterogeneity in the incidence of air quality improvements that favored lower-income households. Based on house price appreciation, households in the lowest quintile of the income distribution received annual benefits from the program equal to 0.3% of their income on average during the 1990s, over twice as much as those in the highest quintile.

I Listen To You Every Day: Parasocial Relationships And Self-Disclosure In Christian Radio, Michael E. Agee Jan 2014

I Listen To You Every Day: Parasocial Relationships And Self-Disclosure In Christian Radio, Michael E. Agee

Communication Theses - Archive

Involvement with characters is an important part of our media rich environment. Researchers have examined different forms of character involvement, most often in television. Though unique because of its focus on the relationship between a media persona and viewers and listeners, researchers have paid scant attention to the effects of parasocial interaction (PSI) and relationships (PSR) that form between radio station announcers and their listeners. This case study explores parasocial relationships between listeners and announcers at a non-commercial Christian music station, the role of personal self-disclosure by announcers on the air, and whether it can affect real life behavior as …

Individual Motivational Factors Impacting United States Air Force Reserve Recruiting, Brian E. Wish Jan 2014

Individual Motivational Factors Impacting United States Air Force Reserve Recruiting, Brian E. Wish

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

This research seeks to discern the latent motivational factors that prompt individuals to join the Air Force Reserve. It is hypothesized that the decision to affiliate has a large non-economic component; this study also seeks to determine whether enlistment motivations have been stable over the last decades or whether motivations have recently evolved in light of over a decade of constant armed conflict. The project utilizes a questionnaire given at selected reserve units to members who are in their first few months of service. These surveys consisted of both motivational and discouragement panels of questions; returned questionnaires were analyzed using factor …

Weighing In On The Hallmarks Of Nonprofit Marketization: Organizational Factors Impacting Financial Performance Indicators Of Scalability And Sustainability, Amy Elizabeth Merk

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

Nonprofit organizations have experienced continued revenue growth despite a decrease in government funding, increase in competition among organizations, and greater accountability to both public and private funders. Influences from both the public and private sectors have led to a "marketized" nonprofit sector, adapting tools from the business world to succeed in a more competitive atmosphere. A nonprofit manager must demonstrate the sustainability and scalability of the organization and effectively communicate organizational goals to engage a wide audience. Concurrently, a field of third-party evaluators has emerged, claiming to identify those nonprofit organizations that provide the greatest social return on investment for …
