The Influence Of Public Relations On Relationship Content: A Content Analysis Of Community Foundation Annual Reports, Timothy Penning Jan 2014

The Influence Of Public Relations On Relationship Content: A Content Analysis Of Community Foundation Annual Reports, Timothy Penning

Peer Reviewed Articles

This study investigates the influences on organisational–public relationships (OPRs) in terms of how organisations express relationships as a value in community foundation annual reports. While much attention recently has been given to social media as a form of dialogic communication, the depth and genuine nature of an organisation’s value of relationships is revealed in traditional communication where the nature of the forum is not dialogic and there is not an expectation of relational content as there could be in an online or social medium. A content analysis of community foundation annual reports shows that the presence of a public relations …

Farmers’ Willingness To Pay For Breeding Sow Insurance: Evidence From China’S Hubei Province, Wei Wan Jan 2014

Farmers’ Willingness To Pay For Breeding Sow Insurance: Evidence From China’S Hubei Province, Wei Wan

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

China is the world’s largest pork producer and consumer, and Hubei Province is one of the top pork production provinces in China. Since problems and risks have led to large-scale reduction of pork production and farmers’ income, Chinese government offers various policy measures to help farmers. Breeding sow insurance is considered as one of the most effective measures started in 2007. To better understand farmer’s need for breeding sow insurance and make proper policy insights, our research is the first empirical study in Hubei Province and one of the pioneer studies investigate farmer’s willingness to pay(WTP) for breeding sow insurance …

Listening For Policy Change: How The Voices Of Disabled People Shaped Australia’S National Disability Insurance Scheme, Cate Thill Jan 2014

Listening For Policy Change: How The Voices Of Disabled People Shaped Australia’S National Disability Insurance Scheme, Cate Thill

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Voice has become an important yet ambivalent tool for the recognition of disability. The transformative potential of voice is dependent on a political commitment to listening to disabled people. To focus on listening redirects accountability for social change from disabled people to the ableist norms, institutions and practices that structure which voices can be heard in policy debates. In this paper, I use disability theory on voice and political theory on listening to examine policy documents for the National Disability Insurance Scheme in light of claims made by the disability movement. Although my study finds some evidence of openness in …

Developing A Career Development Program For Medical Sciences Students: Reflecting "In" And "On" Practice, Ebinepre A. Cocodia Jan 2014

Developing A Career Development Program For Medical Sciences Students: Reflecting "In" And "On" Practice, Ebinepre A. Cocodia

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Using a reflective practice approach this paper provides an outline of the development of a new career development and counselling program for students within a medical sciences off-campus precinct. Drawing on Schön’s (1983) reflective practice framework the aim included reflecting “in” and “on” action during the development and implementation of the program, leading to transformative learning. Client (the student) and counsellor had the opportunity to assess and reframe their views through the incorporation of new knowledge and information. The career development program is based on Krumboltz and Super’s theoretical models with a focus on the life stages of career …

Aging And Equity In The Greater Portland Metropolitan Region, Alan Kenneth Delatorre, Margaret B. Neal

Institute on Aging Publications

Aging and Equity in the Greater Portland Metropolitan Region discusses the opportunities and needs created by the increase in older adults in the region. The 65 and older population is expected to more than double over the next two decades, to over half a million people. Planning for the inevitable and unprecedented aging of our population provides an opportunity to improve our environments while becoming a leader in the push to create sustainable, equitable, and age-friendly communities.

State Involvement In Limiting Textbook Choice By School Districts, Michelle Phillips Jan 2014

State Involvement In Limiting Textbook Choice By School Districts, Michelle Phillips

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Who gets to decide what textbooks are used in America's public-school classrooms varies by state. States can let each school district decide, provide standards that must be followed and make available an incomplete listing of books meeting those standards, or allow schools to choose books only from a list provided by the state. I present a model that provides an explanation for state limits on textbook selection by school districts. I examine the roles played by decision making costs, effectiveness of voters, religious composition, power of teachers, and propensity of state governments to interfere with or to help districts in …

Earnings Management And Corporate Spinoffs, Ying Chou Lin, Kenneth Yung Jan 2014

Earnings Management And Corporate Spinoffs, Ying Chou Lin, Kenneth Yung

Economics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this study we examine whether firms manage earnings before pursuing corporate spinoffs. Using a sample of 226 completed spinoffs between 1985 and 2005, we find strong evidence of pre-spinoff earnings management among parent firms involved in non-focus-increasing spinoffs. We also find higher levels of earnings management among parent firms that have a higher level of information asymmetry prior to spinoff announcements. Our regression results show a significant negative relation between income-increasing earnings management and the announcement period returns for non-focus-increasing spinoffs. In addition, a significant positive relation is found between income-increasing earnings management and the announcement period returns for …

Can Data Drive Success?: Implementing Instruction Evaluation Forms, Ashley Rosener, James Gulvas, Barbara Harvey, Anne Merkle, Emily Frigo

Presentations

A committee comprised of seven Research and Instruction Librarians at Grand Valley State University met to analyze, evaluate, and recommend changes to a newly-implemented librarian instruction evaluation form. Prior to the creation of this form, instruction assessment forms were used on an individual, ad hoc basis for personal self-evaluation. In 2010, there was a grassroots effort to trial a standardized form, but it did not result in widespread adoption among teaching librarians beyond the duration of the project.

In 2013, with a formal Instruction Program in place, there was renewed interest in creating an effective, sustainable, and practical library assessment …

Targeting Point Of Need To Increase Traffic To Library Resources, James C. Miller Jan 2014

Targeting Point Of Need To Increase Traffic To Library Resources, James C. Miller

WRL Staff Scholarship

This paper examines the effect of creating LibGuides tailored to a student’s point of need and focuses on their potential to boost usage of library resources. In this study, LibGuides were designed for specific assignments and introduced to students during library instruction sessions. Pre‐ and Post‐LibGuide web traffic suggests that LibGuides increased web traffic to library resources. This article suggests that library resources should not only provide sources for assignments but also assist a student through the stages of completing an assignment. As a corollary benefit, creation of assignment‐specific LibGuides increased collaboration and discussion between faculty and librarians.

Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (Nasis) 2013-2014 Methodology Report, Bureau Of Sociological Research

Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS)

This report presents a detailed account of the design and fielding of the 2013-2014 Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey (NASIS). Users of the 2013-2014 NASIS data will find it an important reference source for answers to questions about methodology. The Nebraska Annual Social Indicators Survey was conceived as a vehicle both for producing current, topical information about Nebraskans and also for monitoring change in quality of life. As in earlier surveys, NASIS 2013-2014 was a joint effort of the Department of Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and a variety of public agencies. While the final responsibility for the …

Institutional And Partisan Sources Of Legislative Conflict: The Brazilian Case, Taeko Hiroi, Lucio Renno Jan 2014

Institutional And Partisan Sources Of Legislative Conflict: The Brazilian Case, Taeko Hiroi, Lucio Renno

Departmental Papers (PS)

We assess the effects of individual, partisan, and institutional dimensions of conflict on the duration and outcome of the legislative processes in the Brazilian Congress. Our analysis indicates that legislative approval is more likely when the size of the governing coalition is either relatively small or extremely large and least likely when the coalition size is barely over the supermajority threshold to approve constitutional amendments. In contrast, legislative rejection is less likely with either modestly sized coalitions or very large coalitions, but most likely when it is approximately the size of the supermajority threshold. We also find that the effects …

Together Building Imagination, Tbi Re-Defined: The Effects Of Theater On People With A Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Marcelline Gangl Jan 2014

Together Building Imagination, Tbi Re-Defined: The Effects Of Theater On People With A Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Marcelline Gangl

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This study investigates the use of theater as a rehabilitation tool for people who have suffered a mild Traumatic Brian Injury (TBI). In this study, two middle aged women agreed to participate in theater workshops once-a-week for a 5 week period. The workshops focused on different areas of communication: eye contact, movement, spontaneity, creativity, diction, and volume of voice. Based on research done on how a TBI affects an individual, it was found that individuals who are living with a TBI say that they have a loss of socialization skills, a loss of social support and a feeling of being …

Examining The Rise Of Right Wing Populist Parties In Western Europe, John (Jack) Malone Jan 2014

Examining The Rise Of Right Wing Populist Parties In Western Europe, John (Jack) Malone

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Over the last twenty-five years, right wing populist parties (RPPs) have become much more popular across Europe, even becoming the most popular parties in a select few countries. These parties run on a platform of being staunchly against immigration and multiculturalism, and are reactionary in general to any kind of social change. In this thesis I try to answer just why right wing populist parties have seen their popularity increase so dramatically over a relatively short amount of time. To do this, I will study shifts in voting behavior and voter attitudes across Europe by examining election results and survey …

Structural Change In The Demand For Housing Services And Policy Implications, Nhu Nguyen Jan 2014

Structural Change In The Demand For Housing Services And Policy Implications, Nhu Nguyen

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This research paper estimates the demand for housing services across the United States and studies public policy implications based on estimation results. More specifically, the research paper examines the price and income elasticity of demand in the United States and tests for structural change in the demand for housing services between two different time periods. The empirical analysis on 33 Metropolitan Statistical Areas in 2005 and 2011 suggests that the demand for housing services is inelastic with respect to price per unit of housing services, and the income elasticity of demand has a relatively larger magnitude than the price elasticity …

International Involvement In The State Consolidation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Hannah Deblauwe Jan 2014

International Involvement In The State Consolidation In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Hannah Deblauwe

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

The world in the 20th century saw the rise of a new phenomenon: international development. Bosnia and Herzegovina after its war was one of the first nations to receive large-scale international aid in the form of development programs, ranging from reconstruction to economic development to state consolidation. Since 1996 many nations, NGOs, and inter-governmental organizations have been involved in the state consolidation of this Balkan nation of 3.6 million people. This paper looks at the relationship of the EU and USAID specifically and how they have impacted this nation. In order to accomplish that this paper will look at …

The Constitutive Nature Of Non-Profit Advertising And Its Effect On Agency: An Analysis Of The Campaigns Of Childfund International And (Red), Camry Martinez Jan 2014

The Constitutive Nature Of Non-Profit Advertising And Its Effect On Agency: An Analysis Of The Campaigns Of Childfund International And (Red), Camry Martinez

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Many rhetorical scholars choose to study the persuasive effectiveness of an advertisement instead of the reality that the ad creates. While this is a beneficial endeavor, in the case of non-profit advertisements it allows for the meaning the advertisements create to be passed over. The meaning is assumed to be positive because the effect of the successful persuasion of the ad results in a beneficial outcome, helping others. The literature review examines rhetoric as constitutive, or capable of creating the meaning of the audience, and then explores how through this constitutive nature an advertisement can affect the agency of an …
