Goal-Setting And Task Performance Among Nigerian Managers In A Cross-Cultural Context, Andrew A. Mogaji Jan 2014

Goal-Setting And Task Performance Among Nigerian Managers In A Cross-Cultural Context, Andrew A. Mogaji

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This study assessed goal-setting and task performance among Nigerian managers. Data were collected from 521 subjects including 176 Yoruba, 147 Igbo and 198 Hausa/Fulani managerial employees in Lagos, Nigeria. The relevant scales of the 57-item questionnaire designed by Mendonca and Kanungo (1994) were used to obtain measures of the dependent variables. Mean scores in goal setting and performance-intrinsic reward contingency were highest among the Yoruba managers followed by Hausa/Fulani and Igbo managers respectively. Mean score in task significance was highest among the Igbo managers followed by Yoruba and Hausa/Fulani managers respectively. Mean score in performance-extrinsic reward contingency was highest among …

Brands Of Gender And Acculturation In Immigration Process Of Second World War Survivors In Southern Brazil, Bruna Krimberg Von Muhlen, Marlene Neves Strey Jan 2014

Brands Of Gender And Acculturation In Immigration Process Of Second World War Survivors In Southern Brazil, Bruna Krimberg Von Muhlen, Marlene Neves Strey

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This study focused on how a migration context drives changes in attitudes and identity. We investigate the process of acculturation of Jewish survivors of the Second World War who immigrated to South of Brazil decades ago. This is a complex immigration because the immigrants who survived the Second World War were more vulnerable to experience stress of acculturation since most of them lost their families, homes, and everything but their lives. This research consisted in a documentary and discourse analysis of interviews made with Jewish survivors’ immigrants performed by the Jewish Cultural Institute Marc Chagall in Porto Alegre, Brazil. As …

Psychological Traits Affecting Both Cultural Adaptation And Foreign Language Acquisition, Timothy Dean Keeley Jan 2014

Psychological Traits Affecting Both Cultural Adaptation And Foreign Language Acquisition, Timothy Dean Keeley

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

This empirical study goes a long way in determining the psychometric variables that predict individual differences in terms of the degree of success in both cultural adaptation and foreign language acquisition (FLA). Ever since Schumann (1978) introduced his Acculturation Model, the most well-known attempt to link cultural adaptation with FLA, a number of empirical studies have sought to determine these psychometric variables with mixed results due to the wide variation in the research methodologies applied in terms of learning targets, achievement measures, types of treatment, etc. (D.rnyei, 2005). This study overcomes the weaknesses of many previous studies. The experiment involved …

Characteristics Of The Country Of Origin And Immigrant Children’S Psychological And Sociocultural School Adjustment, Maja K. Schachner, Friedrich Schiller, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Peter Noack Jan 2014

Characteristics Of The Country Of Origin And Immigrant Children’S Psychological And Sociocultural School Adjustment, Maja K. Schachner, Friedrich Schiller, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Peter Noack

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

In many Western countries, immigrant children lag behind their native peers in educational attainment, yet there appear to be systematic differences between immigrant groups. We set out to examine (1) if these differential outcomes can be linked to group specific acculturation patterns, following similar processes to those observed at individual level; and (2) to what extent characteristics of the country of origin could help to explain differences in the acculturation process and school adjustment of immigrant children in Germany. In particular, we investigated country-level relationships between children’s acculturation conditions (e.g., perceived parental acculturation expectations and cultural practices in the family), …

Let’S Take This One Step At A Time: The Effect Of Presenting The Brainstorming Rules In Stages On Brainstorming Effectiveness, Cassondra Batz Jan 2014

Let’S Take This One Step At A Time: The Effect Of Presenting The Brainstorming Rules In Stages On Brainstorming Effectiveness, Cassondra Batz

University Libraries Undergraduate Research Paper Award

The purpose of this research is to further our understanding of the way groups work together to generate ideas while using a procedure called brainstorming. Brainstorming requires groups to follow four procedural rules while generating their ideas (Osborn 1957). However, two of theses rules seem to call for contradictory processes. One of these rules states that “free-wheeling is welcomed; the wilder the idea the better,” while another rule says to “combine and build on the ideas already generated.” The contradiction is apparent when a person notices that one rule requests a group to generate ideas that are different from previously …

Revisiting The Influence Of Law Clerks On The U.S. Supreme Court’S Agenda-Setting Process, Ryan C. Black, Christina L. Boyd, Amanda C. Bryan Jan 2014

Revisiting The Influence Of Law Clerks On The U.S. Supreme Court’S Agenda-Setting Process, Ryan C. Black, Christina L. Boyd, Amanda C. Bryan

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Do law clerks influence U.S. Supreme Court Justices’ decisions in the Court’s agenda-setting stage? For those Justices responding to their own law clerks’ cert recommendations, we expect a high degree of agreement between Justice and clerk. For non-employing Justices, however, we anticipate that the likelihood of agreement between clerk and Justice will vary greatly based on the interplay among the ideological compatibility between a Justice and the clerk, the underlying certworthiness of the petition for review, and the clerk’s final recommendation. Relying on a newly collected dataset of petitions making the Court’s discuss list over the 1986 through 1993 Terms, …

Government Regulation: From Independency To Dependency, Part 2, Steven Alan Samson Jan 2014

Government Regulation: From Independency To Dependency, Part 2, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

What Robert Bellah calls ‘expressive individualism’ has led to unprecedented social legislation in America and expanded government employment since the 1960s, helping to produce a generous supply of public services, policy entrepreneurs, and clientele groups. The legal scholar Lawrence M Friedman notes that ‘the right to be ‘oneself,’ to choose oneself, is placed in a special and privileged position.’ As a consequence, ‘achievement is defined in subjective, personal terms, rather than in objective, social terms.’ When the claims of expressive individualism are considered in tandem with the increasing reach of the modern social service state, a case may be made …

The Public Sphere As Site Of Emancipation And Enlightenment: A Discourse Theoretic Critique Of Digital Communication, David Ingram, Asaf Bar-Tura Jan 2014

The Public Sphere As Site Of Emancipation And Enlightenment: A Discourse Theoretic Critique Of Digital Communication, David Ingram, Asaf Bar-Tura

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Habermas claims that an inclusive public sphere is the only deliberative forum for generating public opinion that satisfies the epistemic and normative conditions underlying legitimate decision-making. He adds that digital technologies and other mass media need not undermine – but can extend – rational deliberation when properly instituted. This paper draws from social epistemology and technology studies to demonstrate the epistemic and normative limitations of this extension. We argue that current online communication structures fall short of satisfying the required epistemic and normative conditions. Furthermore, the extent to which Internet-based communications contribute to legitimate democratic opinion and will formation depends …

Loving The Academy: Helping Educators Understand Characteristics Of Black College Students’ Romantic Relationships, Miriam Chitiga Jan 2014

Loving The Academy: Helping Educators Understand Characteristics Of Black College Students’ Romantic Relationships, Miriam Chitiga

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

The paper presents the results of a survey on the characteristics of black college students’ romantic relationships, including types of relationships, the reasons for beginning and ending relationships and the elements of successful relationships. The anonymous electronic survey was voluntarily completed and included questions that allowed for both qualitative and quantitative assessment. The findings of the study reveal that students, who may be involved in stable and committed relationships, begin relationships for emotional needs and romance but acknowledge that compatible personality traits are the key to successful relationships. They cite cheating, partner abuse, and control as major causes of break-ups. …

Lgbt Homeless Youth In Boston Ma: Experiences Regarding Resources And Potential Barriers, Brittney Connery Jan 2014

Lgbt Homeless Youth In Boston Ma: Experiences Regarding Resources And Potential Barriers, Brittney Connery

Undergraduate Review

LGBT youth are at an escalated risk of leaving home, mental health concerns, victimization, substance abuse, and risky sexual behavior. However, research shows a lack of LGBT-specific resources. This raises concern as LGBT youth comprise 20 to 40 percent of homeless youth – disproportionate to the general youth population which is only 10 percent LGBT. The purpose of this research was to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of LGBT homeless youth in Boston, Massachusetts regarding their use of resources and any potential barriers they may face. Furthermore, this study examined whether or not current resources are safe, welcoming …

The Sociolinguistic Situation And National Identity Of Cape Verde, Melissa Oquendo Jan 2014

The Sociolinguistic Situation And National Identity Of Cape Verde, Melissa Oquendo

Undergraduate Review

Cape Verde is a West African country located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Senegal. The archipelago is composed of 10 islands, 9 of which are populated (Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal, Boa Vista, Maio, Santiago, Fogo, and Brava). Santa Luzia is the only uninhabited island. Cape Verde was colonized by the Portuguese and therefore includes a rich mix of Portuguese and African cultures.

Because today’s Cape Verdeans are descendants of both the Portuguese and West Africans, there are elements of both in their languages, traditions, history, and development as a nation. These Portuguese and West …

Not Just Welfare Over Justice: Ethics In Forensic Consultation, Philip J. Candilis, Tess M. S. Neal Jan 2014

Not Just Welfare Over Justice: Ethics In Forensic Consultation, Philip J. Candilis, Tess M. S. Neal

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The ethics of forensic professionalism is often couched in terms of competing individual and societal values. Indeed, the welfare of individuals is often secondary to the requirements of society, especially given the public nature of courts of law, forensic hospitals, jails, and prisons. We explore the weaknesses of this dichotomous approach to forensic ethics, offering an analysis of Psychology’s historical narrative especially relevant to the national security and correctional settings. We contend that a richer, more robust ethical analysis is available if practitioners consider the multiple perspectives in the forensic encounter, and acknowledge the multiple influences of personal, professional, and …

Understanding “The Shock Machine” [Review Of The Book Behind The Shock Machine: The Untold Story Of The Notorious Milgram Psychology Experiments], Kristen M. White Jan 2014

Understanding “The Shock Machine” [Review Of The Book Behind The Shock Machine: The Untold Story Of The Notorious Milgram Psychology Experiments], Kristen M. White

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

In her book, Behind the Shock Experiment, psychologist Gina Perry examines Milgram's experiment in detail. She takes the reader on her journey as she explores her own fascination with Milgram's study, his personal and professional history leading up to the study, and Yale's actual archives of the study. She also weaves in interviews with a number of the study's subjects and employees (or their living relatives). Although occasionally long-winded in her descriptions, Perry's account both informs the reader and fascinates as she details her own transformation from Milgram-devotee to Milgram-skeptic.
