An Overview Of The Evidence For Tuberculosis From Ancient Egypt, Lisa Sabbahy Dr.

Faculty Book Chapters

The study of human remains from ancient Egypt and Nubia has captured the imagination of many people for generations, giving rise to the discipline of palaeopathology and fostering bioarchaeological research. This book contains 16 papers that cover material presented at a workshop entitled 'Palaeopathology in Egypt and Nubia: A Century in Review,' held at the Natural History Museum, London (August 29-30, 2012), which formed part of a three-year research project, 'Sir Grafton Elliot Smith: Palaeopathology and the Archaeological Survey of Nubia.' The papers explore the subject of palaeopathology from its beginnings in the early 1900s through to current research themes …

Gist Implementation At St. John Fisher College, Kate Ross, Micquel Little

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

St. John Fisher College’s Lavery Library implemented GIST (Getting It System Toolkit) with the intention of integrating Purchase on Demand into the Interlibrary Loan process. This strategy was chosen to make the request submission process remain seamless for Lavery patrons while improving our collection through patron-driven acquisitions. Leveraging the power of ILLiad, combined with GIST, we were able to change perceptions about collection development and allow our users to guide the growth of our collection at their curricular, research, or leisure point of need. Since the initial setup, Lavery has increased the number of items provided to our patrons through …

Aging Puerto Ricans’ Experiences Of Depression Treatment: A New Ethnographic Exploration, Marta B. Rodríguez-Galán, Luis M. Falcón

Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications

Purpose
To examine aging Puerto Ricans’ experiences with and perceptions of depression treatment.

Methodology/approach
In-depth analysis of eight exemplary cases from ethnographic interviews with a subsample of 16 aging Puerto Ricans in the Boston area who are part of the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study.

Findings
The results show that respondents were resistant to accepting pharmacological treatment for their depression, and they often characterized antidepressants as “dope.” Moreover, they claimed that in addition to their health problems, social stressors such as financial strain, lack of jobs, housing problems, and social isolation are triggering or contributing to their depression. Because of …

Niche Markets And Their Lessons, Cally Jordan Jan 2014

Niche Markets And Their Lessons, Cally Jordan

Faculty Papers & Publications

Markets are full of nooks and crannies. Out of the glare of the big economies and their public exchanges, markets specializing by financial product, activity, or industry thrive, often attracting little by way of formal regulatory oversight. But there is another kind of specialized market, one which is geographically and politically determined albeit internationally focused. Luxembourg, Ireland, Dubai, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland, among others, these are some of the world’s niche markets.

It is a hard business being a niche market, operating in a competitive and often unforgiving environment, engaging in constant repositioning and facing inherent limitations on growth. Surprisingly, …

Charting A Future Course For Development: Natural Resources, Conservation, And Community Character In Coastal Alaska, Thomas G. Safford, Megan Henly, Jessica Ulrich-Schad, Keith Perkins

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Dramatic social changes are occurring across rural America as traditional natural resource-based industries such as fishing and forestry decline, and amenity-driven development attracts new residents and visitors. These changes are altering not only the economies and cultural identities of rural communities, but also entire regions where seemingly similar towns respond to these social and economic shifts in distinct ways. Using survey data from 1,541 residents of Southeast Alaska, we examine individual views regarding the role of fishing, forestry, and tourism in this region’s economic future. We also assess beliefs about the importance of conserving natural resources and the preservation of …

“They Can Only Do So Much:” Use Of Family While Coping With Rural Homelessness, Deanna L. Trella, Timothy P. Hilton Jan 2014

“They Can Only Do So Much:” Use Of Family While Coping With Rural Homelessness, Deanna L. Trella, Timothy P. Hilton

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

This research explores individual and family reliance on non-homeless family members in coping with homelessness in a rural area. Drawing on 114 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with homeless adults and families in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, we found that almost all participants relied on non-homeless family members for assistance, but with variation in the amount of help sought and received. Some participants displayed high thresholds for help-seeking, only relying on family under extreme circumstances and generally asking for modest assistance. This was common among childless single homeless adults who often had different support. Other participants displayed low thresholds for help-seeking, frequently asking …

Differences Between Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders And Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders: Rural Social Work Implications For Prevention, Assessment, And Treatment, Susan M. Ryan, George S. Leibowitz, Jeanne M. Nauheimer, Paul Force-Emery Mackie

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

This literature review examined nine quantitative research studies published between 1992-2013 that compared children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to identify: (a) the differences between these children (e.g., intellectual, behavioral); and (b) the diagnostic tools that may be used to distinguish between them, thereby providing a differential diagnosis. Special focus was placed on rural treatment implications. These studies revealed differences between the intellectual, executive functioning, adaptive behavior, motor, and behavioral skills of children with FASD and ADHD. This review identified neurodevelopmental assessments used in these nine research studies that appear to support learning …

Impact Of Providers’ Cultural Competence On Clients’ Satisfaction And Hopefulness In Rural Family Services: A Pilot Study, Mingun Lee, Karen Carlson, Sylvia Hawranick Sentfen Jan 2014

Impact Of Providers’ Cultural Competence On Clients’ Satisfaction And Hopefulness In Rural Family Services: A Pilot Study, Mingun Lee, Karen Carlson, Sylvia Hawranick Sentfen

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Cultural competence has been discussed in professional disciplines. However, previous studies focused on ethnic sensitivity in practice, and limited work has addressed the cultural competence of rural social work practitioners. This study examined relationships between families’ perceptions of cultural competence, therapeutic alliance, and practice outcomes in rural practice settings. Forty-five youth and their parents receiving intensive in-home family preservation services at Integrated Services of Appalachian Ohio completed a questionnaire regarding their providers’ cultural competence in rural settings, and their therapeutic alliance, hopefulness, and satisfaction with services. Families rated their provider as culturally competent in rural practice settings; and provider competence …

Gun Control: College Student Attitudes And The Meaning For Appalachian Social Workers, Ida M. Mills, Mark A. Mills Jan 2014

Gun Control: College Student Attitudes And The Meaning For Appalachian Social Workers, Ida M. Mills, Mark A. Mills

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Senseless and tragic shootings across communities such as Newtown, Connecticut have riveted public attention on gun control. Bombarded by pro- and anti-gun-control forces, policy makers are often reactionary. Social workers must deal with these policies and the clients who fear them. Social scientists have suggested that cultural world views have greater influence on this issue than any other predictors. A survey of rural Appalachian college students (N=294) explored gun control attitudes in order to consider what makes compromise and consensus on the issue of gun control so difficult. It considers these influences and their implications for rural social workers.

Mental Health First Aid Usa: The Implementation Of A Mental Health First Aid Training Program In A Rural Healthcare Setting, Andrew M. O'Neill, Valerie L. Leyva, Michael N. Humble, Melinda L. Lewis, John A. Garcia Jan 2014

Mental Health First Aid Usa: The Implementation Of A Mental Health First Aid Training Program In A Rural Healthcare Setting, Andrew M. O'Neill, Valerie L. Leyva, Michael N. Humble, Melinda L. Lewis, John A. Garcia

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Nearly one-quarter of adults in the United States suffer from a documented mental disorder. Consequently, anyone could encounter a person with symptoms of mental illness at some point as they carry out their daily life activities. Although laypersons may accurately identify physical illnesses, they may lack necessary skills to identify symptoms of mental disorders, or know how to adequately respond to persons in a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aid USA is an evidence-based certification program designed to teach lay citizens to recognize certain symptoms of common mental illnesses, offer and provide first aid assistance, and guide a person …

Iterative Ethical Discussion In Hybridized Practice Classes, Michelle Emery Blake Mssw, Ph.D., Mary Fran Davis Jan 2014

Iterative Ethical Discussion In Hybridized Practice Classes, Michelle Emery Blake Mssw, Ph.D., Mary Fran Davis

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

An increasing number of social work programs at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels utilize online or hybridized instruction, including practice courses. These courses may be of particular advantage to students in rural communities by minimizing commute times and making social work education more available. However, a concern is whether these venues allow essential content, such as the development of professional ethics, to be adequately addressed. This teaching note is based on the authors’ experiences with conducting online ethics discussions and provides suggestions for incorporating online scenarios that reflect practice dilemmas, which students must consider critically before responding to posted …

Voces Del Canal: Building Safe Communities Through Strong Partnerships In The Canal, Julia Van Der Ryn, Jennifer Lucko, Tom Wilson, Omar Carrera, Miho Kim, Reem Assil, Saba Waheed, Jennifer Lee, Diego Garcia, Bill Hogan, Voces Del Canal

Collected Faculty Scholarship

The Canal, a vibrant community of Latino immigrant families, is rich in diversity and cultural traditions, strong family networks, and a determination towards economic selfsufficiency. Latino immigrants in Marin County are heavily concentrated in the Canal and have the highest labor force participation rates in the County.i Despite being a vital part of Marin’s social, economic, and cultural society, Canal residents continue to struggle to meet basic necessities for their families.

To this end, a coalition of resident leaders from the community came together to form Voces del Canal to lead an unprecedented community-driven research project. Residents wanted to affirm …
