James Wilson's Judge As Agent-Plus, Geena Bournazian Jan 2014

James Wilson's Judge As Agent-Plus, Geena Bournazian

Undergraduate Review

James Wilson’s theory of constitutional interpretation is based on a multidimensional view of sovereignty, both principled and derived. While the American people serve as the principle sovereign, they delegate authority to the Court (their agents) to uphold the Constitution and educate the American people about the Constitution, its principles, and the duties of the sovereign people. In rendering their decisions, Wilson argues that judges should apply principles of common sense natural law and natural right that informed the sovereign people’s original understanding of the Constitution. By applying Wilson’s multidimensional concept of sovereignty, the role of the judge can be used …

Victim Worthiness: The Effect Of Media Coverage On The Portrayal Of Homicide Victims, Danielle Christenson Jan 2014

Victim Worthiness: The Effect Of Media Coverage On The Portrayal Of Homicide Victims, Danielle Christenson

Undergraduate Review

In the last thirty years with the growth of 24-hour news channels, Internet only news sites and the decline of the newspaper, there have been tremendous changes in how the media covers crimes. Whether it is a catastrophic terrorist attack, school shooting or a low-profile homicide, violent crime is a staple of news coverage. The field of victimology has documented that the media does not portray all crime victims the same. The race and class of the victim as well as seemingly non-relevant factors such as their age, profession and the location of the crime as well as the demographics …

Anterior And Posterior Types Of Neuropsychological Deficits In Parkinson’S Disease: A Subgroup Classification Of Cognitiveoutcome, Megan Risi Jan 2014

Anterior And Posterior Types Of Neuropsychological Deficits In Parkinson’S Disease: A Subgroup Classification Of Cognitiveoutcome, Megan Risi

Undergraduate Review

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a pervasive neurodegenerative disorder with a prevalence rate of approximately 150 out of 100,000 individuals in the United States and Western Europe (Checkoway & Nelson, 1999). The most widely recognized motor symptoms associated with PD include a resting tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement (i.e., bradykinesia), freezing, and gait abnormalities. Non-motor symptoms typically consist of depression, hallucinations, sleep disturbances, fatigue, autonomic nervous system impairment, and cognitive deficits (see e.g., Stacy, 2011). The frequency and severity of these nonmotor impairments typically increase with disease duration, and they are not exclusively linked to the motor symptoms (see e.g., Yu …

Adam Smith - Providing Morality In A Free Market Economy, Kendra Tully Jan 2014

Adam Smith - Providing Morality In A Free Market Economy, Kendra Tully

Undergraduate Review

Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments (TMS) and Wealth of Nations (WN) appear to suffer from an irresolvable tension: TMS extols human sympathy whereas WN extols the consequences of self-interest. This paper takes a comprehensive approach, adding to scholarship on what has become known as the “Adam Smith Problem.” Through a textual analysis of TMS and WN that focuses on prudence, the nature of happiness and Smith’s rhetorical style, the inconsistency between his two texts disappears. The emphasis Smith places on prudence in WN can only be properly understood when one considers its foundations in sympathy found in TMS. By …

Environmental Crisis And Transitional Phenomena: Brenda Hillman’S Ecopoetic Playing, Brian Glaser Jan 2014

Environmental Crisis And Transitional Phenomena: Brenda Hillman’S Ecopoetic Playing, Brian Glaser

English Faculty Articles and Research

Many writings in ecopsychology make reference to “the environmental crisis” as an apocalyptic scenario, but few define the cause of this crisis. This essay proposes that the cause for apocalyptic rhetoric of environmental crisis is as much psychological as environmental. It draws on Winnicott’s idea of playing as haunted by the otherness of reality to offer a therapeutic reading of the poetry of Muriel Rukeyser and Brenda Hillman in which the imaginative resources of trope, apostrophe, dedication and allusion serve to make bearable the anxiety that leads to apocalyptic rhetoric in ecopsychological writings.

Results Of A Transpersonal, Narrative, And Phenomenological Psychotherapy For Psychosis, Lewis Mehl-Madrona, Erik Jul, Barbara Mainguy

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

In our academically based, psychiatric outpatient practice, we have encountered those who wish to avoid medications for treatment for psychosis. This study is a qualitative/quantitative study in progress of a patient population diagnosed with psychosis and managed primarily without medication. We reflect upon the transpersonal foundations of an approach in which voices and visions are accepted as real, given full ontological status, and addressed within a dialogical framework. We present interim data on a series of 51 patients over 20 years old who presented with psychosis and who remained with us for at least six months in their effort to …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of Scales To Measure Professional Confidence In Manual Medicine: A Rasch Measurement Approach, Mark D. Hecimovich, Irene Styles, Simone E. Volet

Faculty Publications

Background: Health professionals in athletic training, chiropractic, osteopathy, and physiotherapy fields, require high-level knowledge and skills in their assessment and management of patients. This is important when communicating with patients and applying a range of manual procedures. Prior to embarking on professional practice, it is imperative to acquire optimal situation-specific levels of self-confidence for a beginner practitioner in these areas. In order to foster this professional self-confidence within the higher education context, it is necessary to have valid and reliable scales that can measure and track levels and how they change. This study reports on the development and psychometric analysis …

Protocol For Culturally Responsive Organizations: Literature Review And Standards For Performance, Marie-Elena Reyes, Ann Curry-Stevens

Center to Advance Racial Equity Publications and Reports

At the request of the Coalition of Communities of Color, the Center to Advance Racial Equity (CARE) was asked to assist in the development of a Protocol for Culturally Responsive Organizations (also called the Protocol) that it would use to improve the quality of services available to communities of color in mainstream health and human services. To achieve this, we have researched the literature available that provides evidence of the effectiveness of various interventions. Priority has been given to the literatures on culturally-responsive service delivery (which has been thin) and culturally-competent services (which while abundantly written about, relatively little exists …

The Impacts Of Public Charter Schools On Students And Traditional Public Schools: What Does The Empirical Evidence Tell Us?, David L. Silvernail Phd, Amy F. Johnson Phd

School Funding - Essential Programs and Services (EPS)

The goal of this BRIEF was to compile and analyze the available evidence of the impacts of public charter schools on students and schools. Using a series of five common claims made by proponents and opponents of public charter schools as an organizer, the existing empirical evidence was reviewed. The analysis revealed that student performance in charter schools is very mixed. In some cases studies have found positive effects in achievement, others negative effects, and still others no effects. The presence of charter schools has resulted in positive changes in some traditional public schools, while in other cases there appear …

Keeping Education Affordable: Engaging Faculty In A Textbook Alternatives Program, Ann Agee, Mike Jerbic

Faculty and Staff Publications

The average annual cost to students for textbooks is $1,754, and a recent survey found that 49% of students were likely or very likely to not buy a required textbook because of the cost. When cost is an obstacle, learning is hampered. To combat soaring costs, we launched an Affordable Learning Solutions campaign, engaging faculty in finding textbook alternatives that lower costs and improve learning. This session will explore how we recruited faculty and walk attendees through one class that uses low-cost materials and open educational resources available online.

Guide To The Shuji Isawa Collection, 1875 – 2010 (Bulk 1870s), Orson Kingsley

Archives & Special Collections Finding Aids

Shuji Isawa (1850-1917) was sent to the United States by the Japanese Ministry of Education during the early portion of the Meiji Restoration. In 1875 Isawa enrolled at the Bridgewater State Normal School to learn about the United States educational system and Normal School movement, and to bring this information back to Japan. He graduated from Bridgewater State Normal School in 1877 after finishing the two year program. He would go onto study at Harvard for a short time before returning to Japan.

Isawa quickly began reforming the Japanese educational system upon his return to Japan. Some of the new …

Sin Taxes And Sindustry: Revenue, Paternalism, And Political Interest, Adam J. Hoffer, William F. Shughart Ii, Michael D. Thomas Jan 2014

Sin Taxes And Sindustry: Revenue, Paternalism, And Political Interest, Adam J. Hoffer, William F. Shughart Ii, Michael D. Thomas

Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Revenue shortfalls associated with the Great Recession and the slow recovery that followed have placed the budgets of many U.S. state and local governments under heavy stress. In the past several years, lingering economic troubles have eroded governmental tax bases while voters have remained strongly resistant to proposals for cutting public spending or raising taxes on income, property, or other broad bases. This has left many states searching for new revenue sources. Particularly attractive targets for "revenue enhancement" are goods that policymakes deem to be "sinful" or misguided because they are bad for the user or generate negative externalities or …

Substance Use And Drug Distribution At The Individual Level: A Grounded Theory Approach, Evan Thomas Stanforth Jan 2014

Substance Use And Drug Distribution At The Individual Level: A Grounded Theory Approach, Evan Thomas Stanforth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Substance use regularly occurs among individuals that distribute drugs and there is a limited amount of research that has examined both use and distribution. A grounded theory approach was used to develop a framework for analyzing relationships between use and distribution behaviors. 15 participants (five female, 10 male) that had experience selling drugs and using drugs were recruited from a residential substance abuse treatment center. Each participant was interviewed for one hour with an interview protocol aligning with the stage of analysis. A model was developed to explain Involvement and Integration in a Drug World with the codes Substance Use, …

Bitches Unleashed: Women In Rio's Funk Movement, Performances Of Heterosexual Femininity, And Possibilities Of Resistance, Raquel Moreira Jan 2014

Bitches Unleashed: Women In Rio's Funk Movement, Performances Of Heterosexual Femininity, And Possibilities Of Resistance, Raquel Moreira

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rio de Janeiro's funk movement is one of Brazil's most important contemporary cultural and musical expressions. Emerged in the 1970s, Rio's funk was consolidated in the favelas during the 1980s, establishing an ambiguous and tense relationship with local government and media: at times, being legitimized as a cultural form, but also being frequently criminalized. The music is a hybrid combination of diverse Afro rhythms and a heavy bass line, and it is performed in aggressive ways, as well as with mockery and sensuality. Women in Rio's funk, the funkeiras, joined the movement in the late 1990s performing about sex, relationships, …

A Simple Treatment Of The Liquidity Trap For Intermediate Macroeconomics Courses, Sebastien Buttet, Udayan Roy Jan 2014

A Simple Treatment Of The Liquidity Trap For Intermediate Macroeconomics Courses, Sebastien Buttet, Udayan Roy

Publications and Research

Several leading undergraduate intermediate macroeconomics textbooks now include a simple reduced-form New Keynesian model of short-run dynamics (alongside the IS-LM model). Unfortunately, there is no accompanying description of how the zero lower bound on nominal interest rates affects the model. In this article, the authors show how the aforementioned model can easily be modified to teach undergraduate students about the significance of the zero lower bound for economic performance and policy. This acquires additional significance because economies such as the United States and Japan have been close to the zero lower bound since 2008 and 1995, respectively. The authors show …

Front-Page Jews: Doris Wittner's (1880-1937) Berlin Feuilletons, Kerry Wallach

German Studies Faculty Publications

In ‘Die jüdische Frau und das jüdische Buch’ (The Jewish woman and the Jewish book), an article published 18 March 1931 on the front page of the Jüdisch-liberale Zeitung, Doris Wittner included the following lines that concisely sum up her pioneering ideological and political agendas: ‘Aber bis der endgültige Rechtspruch über des Weibes Ruf und Berufung erfolgt, werden wir jedem Frauengeist, der “strebend sich bemüht”, Anerkennung und Ehrerbietung zollen. […] Insbesondere unsere Glaubensgenossinnen, die gewohnt sind, Menschenlose nur nach Jahrtausenden zu messen.’ With such feuilleton articles, Wittner worked to validate women’s contributions to professional spheres, particularly literature and journalism; to …

Using Perception Of Guilt To Assess The Level Of Cultural Adoption Of A Transgressor Belonging To An Ethnic Minority: Influence On Sentencing, Christophe Leys, Sarah Miller, Laurent Licata Jan 2014

Using Perception Of Guilt To Assess The Level Of Cultural Adoption Of A Transgressor Belonging To An Ethnic Minority: Influence On Sentencing, Christophe Leys, Sarah Miller, Laurent Licata

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Perception of the feeling of guilt experienced by the defendant is known to affect judicial sentencing. This influence differs depending on the defendant’s ethnic identity. We investigated the hypothesis that the perception of an out-group defendant’s level of host society’s norms adoption could mediate this mechanism. 64 native Belgian participants were randomly assigned to two experimental conditions, which differed in the presence or absence of guilt expressed by an out-group defendant during his audition, in a given scenario. Participants’ impression of the defendant’s social skills (warmth), his level of host’s society norms adoption, and the severity of the sentence they …

Principles Of Test Development In Papua New Guinea, Sarah Flint, Kristen Pammer Jan 2014

Principles Of Test Development In Papua New Guinea, Sarah Flint, Kristen Pammer

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

With over 800 languages and more than 1000 cultural groups, Papua New Guinea (PNG) provides a challenging environment in which to develop culturally appropriate psychometric tests. Consequently, few tests have been specifically developed for parallel-emic research in PNG. This paper proposes a framework in which to develop psychometric tests within PNG. Linguistic, cultural and social factors are all addressed and strategies for working within these cultural boundaries are posited. Models for translation and validation are assessed in light of the unique challenges presented by the linguistic diversity of PNG. An alternative methodology of translation more appropriate for PNG is also …

Acquiescent And Socially Desirable Response Styles In Cross-Cultural Value Surveys, Jia He, Alejandra Del Carmen Dominguez Espinosa, Ype H. Poortinga, Fons J. R. Van De Vijer

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

The present chapter presents two studies examining the differential effects of acquiescence and social desirability on value scores across cultures. In the first study, culture-level acquiescence indexes were extracted from data in eight multinational surveys, and culture-level social desirability scores were obtained from a meta-analysis of the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Both types of indexes were correlated with cultural value dimensions reported in the literature and with indicators of affluence. We found that affluence explains a substantial proportion of the variance in the association of response styles with value scores in all the surveys. The second study investigated effects of …
