Social Work Publications
Objective—To evaluate the potential efficacy of buspirone as a relapse-prevention treatment for cocaine dependence.
Method—A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 16-week pilot trial conducted at six clinical sites between August 2012 and June 2013. Adult crack cocaine users meeting DSM-IVTR criteria for current cocaine dependence scheduled to be in inpatient/residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment for 12–19 days when randomized, and planning to enroll in local outpatient treatment through the end of the active treatment phase were randomized to buspirone titrated to 60 mg/day (n=35) or to placebo (n=27). All participants received psychosocial treatment as usually provided by the SUD treatment programs …

Background
A performance measurement system is planned for South African substance abuse treatment services. Provider-level barriers to implementing these systems have been identified in the United States, but little is known about the nature of these barriers in South Africa. This study explored the willingness of South African substance abuse treatment providers’ to adopt a performance measurement system and perceived barriers to monitoring service quality that would need to be addressed during system development.
Methods
Three focus group discussions were held with treatment providers from two of the nine provinces in South Africa. These providers represented the diverse spread of …

Religious communities, like other communities, are ripe for interpersonal offenses. We examined the degree to which group identification predicted forgiveness of an in-group offender. We examined the effects of a victim’s perception of his or her religious group identification as a state-specific personal variable on forgiveness by integrating Social Identity Theory into a model of Relational Spirituality (Davis, Hook, & Worthington, 2008) to help explain victim’s responses to transgressions within a religious context. Data were collected from members of Christian congregations from the mid-west region of the United States (Study 1, N = 63), and college students belonging to Christian …

Carrying The World With The Grace Of A Lady And The Grit Of A Warrior: Deepening Our Understanding Of The “Strong Black Woman” Schema, Jasmine A. Abrams, Morgan Maxwell, Michell Pope, Faye Z. Belgrave
Psychology Publications
Across varied disciplines, attempts have been made to capture the multidimensionality of Black womanhood under a unifying framework illustrative of Black women’s perceived roles, responsibilities, and experiences of intersectional oppression. The result has been the emergence of a number of divergent but overlapping constructs (e.g., Superwoman Schema, Sojourner Truth Syndrome, Sisterella Complex, and Strong Black Woman [SBW] Schema). The goal of our study is to integrate overlapping attributes of existing constructs beneath a single term while also expounding upon the defining characteristics of the SBW Schema. Thematic analyses were conducted with data gathered from eight focus groups with 44 Black …
Why Is Low Waist-To-Chest Ratio Attractive In Males? The Mediating Roles Of Perceived Dominance, Fitness, And Protection Ability, Anthony E. Coy, Jeffrey D. Green, Michael E. Price
Why Is Low Waist-To-Chest Ratio Attractive In Males? The Mediating Roles Of Perceived Dominance, Fitness, And Protection Ability, Anthony E. Coy, Jeffrey D. Green, Michael E. Price
Psychology Publications
Past research suggests that a lower waist-to-chest ratio (WCR) in men (i.e., narrower waist and broader chest) is viewed as attractive by women. However, little work has directly examined why low WCRs are preferred. The current work merged insights from theory and past research to develop a model examining perceived dominance, fitness, and protection ability as mediators of to WCR-attractiveness relationship. These mediators and their link to both short-term (sexual) and long-term (relational) attractiveness were simultaneously tested by having 151 women rate one of 15 avatars, created from 3D body scans. Men with lower WCR were perceived as more physically …
Parental Strain, Mental Health Problems, And Parenting Practices: A Longitudinal Study, Alicia Borre, Wendy L. Kliewer
Parental Strain, Mental Health Problems, And Parenting Practices: A Longitudinal Study, Alicia Borre, Wendy L. Kliewer
Psychology Publications
Although poor parenting practices place youth living in under resourced communities at heightened risk for adjustment difficulties, less is known about what influences parenting practices in those communities. The present study examines prospective linkages between three latent constructs: parental strain, mental health problems and parenting practices. Parental victimization by community violence and life stressors were indicative of parental strain; depressive, anxious, and hostile symptoms were indicators of parental mental health; and parental knowledge of their child’s activities and child disclosure were indicators of parenting practices. Interviews were conducted annually for 3 waves with 316 female caregivers (92% African American) parenting …

Cyberbullying Among Adolescents: Measures In Search Of A Construct, Krista R. Mehari, Albert D. Farrell, Anh-Thuy H. Le
Psychology Publications
Objective: This review focuses on the literature on cyberbullying among adolescents. Currently, there is no unified theoretical framework to move the field of cyberbullying forward. Due to some unique features of cyberbullying, researchers have generally assumed that it is distinct from aggression perpetrated in person. Many measures of cyberbullying have been developed based on this assumption rather than to test competing models and inform a theoretical framework for cyberbullying. Approach: We review current theory and research on cyberbullying within the context of the broader literature on aggression to explore the usefulness of the assumption that cyberbullying represents a distinct form …

Efficacy Of A Workbook To Promote Forgiveness: A Randomized Controlled Trial With University Students, Quandrea Harper, Everett L. Worthington, Brandon J. Griffin, Caroline R. Lavelock, Joshua N. Hook, Scott Vrana, Chelsea Greer
Psychology Publications
Objective
The present study investigated the efficacy of a 6-hour self-directed workbook adapted from the REACH Forgiveness intervention.
Method
Undergraduates (N = 41) were randomly assigned to either an immediate treatment or waitlist control condition. Participants were assessed across 3 time periods using a variety of forgiveness outcome measures.
Results
The 6-hour workbook intervention increased forgiveness, as indicated by positive changes in participants’ forgiveness ratings that differed by condition. In addition, benchmarking analysis showed that the self-directed workbook intervention is at least as efficacious as the delivery of the REACH Forgiveness model via group therapy.
Conclusion
A self-directed workbook …

The Globalization Of Human Rights In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Sadara Shine
The Globalization Of Human Rights In Post-Genocide Rwanda, Sadara Shine
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
In the past two decades, Rwanda has been through major changes, from a conflict-ridden society with deep divisions between the two main ethnic groups–Hutus and Tutsis–to a case of impressive economic growth. Despite the progress, deep divisions and human rights issues exist. To avoid the recurrence of any conflict, both state and non-state actors are playing varied roles in a post-genocide Rwanda. Based on both primary and secondary sources, this article argues that in an era of globalization and postgenocide in Rwanda, non-state actors like international non-governmental organizations have the most impact in the preservation of human rights. So, in …
Romantic Relationships In The Context Of Parenting Children With Autism, Amber A. Thompson
Romantic Relationships In The Context Of Parenting Children With Autism, Amber A. Thompson
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
This study examines the impact of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder on relationship quality using the double ABCX model of adjustment and adaptation. Respondents (N = 126) recruited through Autism Society listervs completed online surveys designed to measure three factors of relationship quality: satisfaction, positive perceptions, and negative perceptions. Results from hierarchical multiple regression models indicate that the double ABCX model accounted for 47% of variance in satisfaction, 72% in positive perceptions, and 50% in negative perceptions, for predicting the quality of couple relationships. Implications for clinicians working with couples are discussed, such as the need …
Practice Patterns Of Equine Assisted Psychotherapists, Haley Gresham
Practice Patterns Of Equine Assisted Psychotherapists, Haley Gresham
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
Modeled after Doherty & Simmons’ (1996) study on the practice patterns of marriage and family therapists, this project explored similar questions about equine assisted/facilitated psychotherapists who are members of two main certification organizations, EAGALA and PATH Intl. An Internet survey distributed to equine assisted/facilitated practitioners across the country explored demographic information of the clinician, their clients, and their typical work setting. Equine assisted/facilitated psychotherapy is a growing field and gaining an understanding of the current position of the field allows for growth in areas that are currently underdeveloped within this sector of the mental health field.
Cybersecurity Strategy In Developing Nations: A Jamaica Case Study, Kevin Patrick Newmeyer
Cybersecurity Strategy In Developing Nations: A Jamaica Case Study, Kevin Patrick Newmeyer
Presidential Alumni Research Dissemination Award
Developing nations have been slow to develop and implement cybersecurity strategies despite a growing threat to governance and public security arising from an increased dependency on Internet-connected systems in the developing world and rising cybercrime. Using a neorealist theoretical framework that draws from Gilpin and Waltz, this qualitative case study examined how the government and private sector in Jamaica viewed the state of cybersecurity in the country, and how the country was currently developing policy to respond to cyber threats. Employing Yin's recommended analysis process of iterative and repetitive review of case materials, the documents and interviews of key public …
Cedaw And Gender Violence: An Empirical Assessment, Neil A. Englehart
Cedaw And Gender Violence: An Empirical Assessment, Neil A. Englehart
Political Science Faculty Publications
Does the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) reduce violence against women? CEDAW has the distinction of being an unusually effective human rights treaty: promoting women’s political rights in particular, having a modest effect on women’s social rights, but showing little or no effect on economic rights.1 However, unlike these other rights, the CEDAW Treaty does not explicitly mention violence. The CEDAW Committee interpreted the Treaty as covering gender violence after the fact. It issued General Recommendations in 1989 and 1992 mandating states to collect information and take action on the issue, respectively.2 The …

Channeling Passions: Developing A Successful Social Media Strategy, Elizabeth Ramsey, Amy Vecchione
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
Libraries often struggle with developing a consistent message that communicates their relevance and value to their patrons. When it comes to a social media strategy it’s understood that consistency is an essential aspect in library branding, but how to do it? What measures need to be in place to decide to use new social media tools like Instagram and Pinterest? In 2012, Albertsons Library worked with Web and social media teams in the library and across the Boise State University campus to develop a strategy that works for today’s busy library staff and librarians. By channeling the passion of library …
Recovered Memories And Accusations Of Sexual Abuse: A Review Of Scientific Research Relevant To Missionary Contexts, David R. Dunaetz
Recovered Memories And Accusations Of Sexual Abuse: A Review Of Scientific Research Relevant To Missionary Contexts, David R. Dunaetz
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Childhood sexual abuse of missionary children is a tragedy that mission organizations are seeking to prevent. A second tragedy concerns missionaries falsely accused of sexual abuse. Psychotherapy that generated false memories of sexual abuse was common in the 1980s and 1990s and still continues to some degree today in Christian circles. This chapter reviews scientific evidence that such false memories exist and provides guidelines that Christian organizations may use to help sort true memories of childhood sexual abuse from false memories of childhood sexual abuse.
