Community Engagement As A Process And An Outcome Of Developing Culturally Grounded Health Communication Interventions: An Example From The Decide Project, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly, Jessica Krok, Phokeng M. Dailey, Linda Kight, Janice L. Krieger

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Community engagement is a process often used in developing effective health communication interventions, especially in traditionally underserved cultural contexts. While the potentially positive outcomes of community engagement are well established, the communication processes that result in engagement with cultural groups are less apparent. The focus on the outcomes of engagement at the expense of describing how engagement occurs makes it difficult for methods to be improved upon and replicated by future studies. The purpose of the current manuscript is to illustrate the process of achieving community engagement through the development of a culturally grounded health communication intervention. We offer practical …

Telling The Story Of Stepfamily Beginnings: The Relationship Between Young-Adult Stepchildren’S Stepfamily Origin Stories And Their Satisfaction With The Stepfamily, Jody Koenig Kellas, Leslie Baxter, Cassandra Leclair-Underberg, Matthew Thatcher, Tracy Routsong, Emily Lamb Normand, Dawn O. Telling The Story Of Stepfamily Beginnings: The Relationship Between Young-Adult Stepchildren’S Stepfamily Origin Stories And Their Satisfaction With The Stepfamily, Jody Koenig Kellas, Leslie Baxter, Cassandra Leclair-Underberg, Matthew Thatcher, Tracy Routsong, Emily Lamb Normand, Dawn O. Braithwaite

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The current study adopts a narrative perspective in examining the content of 80 stepchildren’s stepfamily origin stories. Results reveal five types of stepfamily origin stories: Sudden, Dark-sided, Ambivalent, Idealized, and Incremental. Results support the hypothesis that story type would predict differences in family satisfaction; stepchildren who described their stepfamily origins as Idealized were more satisfied than those whose origins were Dark-sided or Sudden. Overall, participants framed their stepfamily identity more positively when their stepfamily beginnings were characterized by closeness, friendship, and even expected ups and downs, rather than when they were left out of the process of negotiating …

Reimagining The Self-Made Man: Myth, Risk, And The Pokerization Of America, Aaron M. Duncan Jan 2014

Reimagining The Self-Made Man: Myth, Risk, And The Pokerization Of America, Aaron M. Duncan

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This article takes a rhetorical approach to the rise of gambling in America, and in particular the growth of the game of poker, as a means to explore larger changes to America’s collective consciousness that have resulted in an increased acceptance of gambling. I contend that the rise of the risk society has resulted in significant alterations to the mythology that binds Americans together. I establish this claim through the exploration of ESPN’s coverage of the 2003 World Series of Poker and its use of the myth of the self-made man. I conclude that gambling works both to critique and …

Feminine Purity And Masculine Revenge-Seeking In Taken (2008), Casey Ryan Kelly Jan 2014

Feminine Purity And Masculine Revenge-Seeking In Taken (2008), Casey Ryan Kelly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The 2008 film Taken depicts the murderous rampage of an ex-CIA agent seeking to recover his teenage daughter from foreign sex traffickers. I argue that Taken articulates a demand for a white male protector to serve as both guardian and avenger of white women’s “purity” against the purportedly violent and sexual impulses of third-world men. A neocolonial narrative retold through film, Taken infers that the protection of white feminine purity legitimates both male conquest abroad and overbearing protection of young women at home. I contend that popular films such as Taken are a part of the broader cultural system of …

Library Space Assessment: User Learning Behaviors In The Library, Susan Montgomery Jan 2014

Library Space Assessment: User Learning Behaviors In The Library, Susan Montgomery

Faculty Publications

Library space assessment in academic libraries is beginning to attract attention in the research literature. Libraries need to uncover how as an informal learning space, it contributes to student learning on campus. The Olin Library sought to learn the role of library space in our users’ learning. We surveyed users about their learning behaviors in a specific space prior to a scheduled renovation and then in the same space afterward. We wanted to determine how the renovation changed users’ perceptions of their learning behaviors in that space.

Risk Assessments For New Bioinvasions For The North Sea Region, Josefin Madjidian Jan 2014

Risk Assessments For New Bioinvasions For The North Sea Region, Josefin Madjidian

NSBWO

This deliverable is a compilation of summaries of four scientific papers that cover different aspects of risks connected to marine bioinvasions in the North Sea Region. One of the papers looks deeper into global shipping and adds several factors to shipping density to describe hotspots for potential invasions and invasion routes. Two of the papers dig into concerns of regional perspective (the Wadden Sea), one developing a model of a specific kind of water body’s vulnerability to non-native, the other dealing with questions related to when a species should be stated as a non-native and when it has become part …

PartiSEApate

For a sustainable and integrated planning of the sea space across the Baltic Sea region, planners and stakeholders have to be engaged in holistic, pan-Baltic thinking where the whole Baltic Sea is considered as one ecosystem and one planning space. However MSP related experiences so far shows that interests are often expressed from one sector or one national or regional perspective only. There is a lack of information exchange between the different maritime sectors as well MSP support structures (i.e. data providers and researchers) and spatial planners. And at the same time there is insufficient communication within the sectors at …

Perceptions Of Community, Personal Well-Being, And Outlook On The Future 2014 Nebraska Metro Poll Results, David Drozd

Past Publications

The 2014 Nebraska Metro Poll continues an on‐going effort to understand the perceptions and concerns of urban residents. The Metro Poll expands upon the efforts of the Omaha Conditions Survey conducted by the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) periodically since 1990 to now include survey responses from the seven counties that comprise both the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas. With the knowledge and insights gained from surveying local residents, leaders and decision‐makers can be better informed on the views and priorities that the public shares.

Selected Characteristics For Nebraska Counties From The 2008-2012 American Community Survey, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Past Publications

On December 17, 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau released five‐year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for the combined years of 2008 through 2012, making available social, economic, housing and demographic statistics for Nebraska’s counties. Also available are estimates for every community and legislative district in Nebraska and the nation.

The data are based on a rolling national sample survey mailed to about 3 million addresses each year, resulting in nearly 2 million final interviews each year from 2008 through 2012. By pooling several years of survey responses, the ACS can generate detailed statistical portraits of smaller geographies such as counties. …

The Cognitive Underpinnings Of Bias In Forensic Mental Health Evaluations, Tess M. S. Neal, Thomas Grisso Jan 2014

The Cognitive Underpinnings Of Bias In Forensic Mental Health Evaluations, Tess M. S. Neal, Thomas Grisso

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

We integrate multiple domains of psychological science to identify, better understand, and manage the effects of subtle but powerful biases in forensic mental health assessment. This topic is ripe for discussion, as research evidence that challenges our objectivity and credibility garners increased attention both within and outside of psychology. We begin by defining bias and provide rich examples from the judgment and decision-making literature as they might apply to forensic assessment tasks. The cognitive biases we review can help us explain common problems in interpretation and judgment that confront forensic examiners. This leads us to ask (and attempt to answer) …

Exposure To Pre-Incident Behavior And Reporting In College Students, Mario Scalora, Brandon A. Hollister, Sarah Hoff, Alissa Marquez Jan 2014

Exposure To Pre-Incident Behavior And Reporting In College Students, Mario Scalora, Brandon A. Hollister, Sarah Hoff, Alissa Marquez

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Campus targeted violence is preceded by noticeable, alarming behavior, and reporting improvement efforts have been suggested to increase students’ willingness to inform campus authorities of forewarning actions. Reporting improvement techniques have been most successful with material appealing to the perceptions of high-risk students (i.e., those likely to observe and not report). The current study examined the characteristics of students that view threatening behavior and lack willingness to report with a large, Midwestern, undergraduate sample (n 450). Approximately 35% of the sample (i.e., n 157) indicated observing pre-incident behavior on campus, and 65% of these individuals (i.e., n 101) described unwillingness …

Helping The Community From The Bottom Up: Distributing Diapers To The Williamsburg Community, Constance A. Hull, Caroline Kelsey Jan 2014

Helping The Community From The Bottom Up: Distributing Diapers To The Williamsburg Community, Constance A. Hull, Caroline Kelsey

VA Engage Journal

There is a great need for a sustainable supply of clean diapers for low-income residents of Williamsburg since this region is without a diaper bank. Being unable to afford diapers can have a myriad of negative consequences from being unable to send children to child care to increased health risks involved in leaving a baby in a soiled diaper. Our model of a diaper bank differs from most because we mail diapers directly to families, eliminating transportation needs. We hope to partner with community agencies and The College of William & Mary to expand our services and create a more …

Meaningful International Service Learning Experiences: Looking At The Reciprocal Nature Of Reflection And Group Connection, Emily M. Neer Jan 2014

Meaningful International Service Learning Experiences: Looking At The Reciprocal Nature Of Reflection And Group Connection, Emily M. Neer

VA Engage Journal

International service learning trips can provide meaningful and deep experiences where students are impacted and challenged by these experiences. In order to maximize the experience, one must understand the reciprocal relationship between reflection and group connection. In this critical reflection I will explore the ways in which reflection and group connection reciprocate each other in an international service-learning context. I discuss three concepts that I believe play crucial roles in this reciprocal relationship and their roles in three different contexts of the service immersion experience. These three concepts are reflection, stability, and vulnerability. They are explained within the contexts of …

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 2014, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

Annual Report and Financial Statements of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the year ended 31st December, 2014. In general, 2014 has been a very eventful and challenging year for the Bank, the country, and the world at large. In the course of the year, the Bank underwent significant changes in its governance composition. In 2014, the global economy witnessed considerable vulnerabilities characterized by fragile growth and weak economic outlook. Global growth recovery was modest and continued to be threatened by strong downside risks, as a result of sharp drop in commodity prices, escalating geo-political tensions, and heightening threats …

Challenges And Success Stories From The Danish Health Care System, Lars Engberg Jan 2014

Challenges And Success Stories From The Danish Health Care System, Lars Engberg

The Bridge

There are some substantial differences between the Danish health care system and the health care system in the United States. Most importantly, Danish health care is free. As a Dane you do not pay when you visit a doctor or a hospital, knowing, of course, that as a taxpayer (and taxes are high in Denmark), a fairly large proportion of your taxes goes to keeping visits to hospitals and doctors free of charge. But some services in the health care system do cost you out-of-pocket when you use them. In Europe, in general, the co-payment rate, besides what you pay …

The Stressors Of The Military Lifestyle And The Services Available To Help Military Families, Jacquelyn Desrosiers

Social Work Theses

This quantitative, descriptive study focuses on the effectiveness of the various services available for military families from the perspective of Rhode Island military residents. A review of the literature outlines the major stressors of the military lifestyle. The services available to help military families deal with these stressors are analyzed in the study. Five Rhode Island military families participated in this study. Results revealed overall satisfaction with the resources available through the military itself, dissatisfaction with services available through other areas, such as schools, churches, or organizations, the necessity of aid during the reintegration experience, the minimal usage of the …

Helping Children Find A Home That Offers Safety, Stability, And Love, D'Nique Melissa Stevens Jan 2014

Helping Children Find A Home That Offers Safety, Stability, And Love, D'Nique Melissa Stevens

Social Work Theses

The researcher wanted to look closely to see if preferences of adoptive parents, such as a particular race, age, or gender of the adoptee, helped or hindered the process of adoption. Gathering research, based on previous studies, the researcher was able to compare and contrast, to see if there are any patterns regarding adoptive parent preferences. There was a hole in the literature in regards to the preference of gender. This was a quantitative descriptive study completed by Providence College students, using a Likert-like style instrument. The main findings in the research was the statistically significant relationship of the values …

The Impact Of Partner Support In Abortion, Amy Gentile Jan 2014

The Impact Of Partner Support In Abortion, Amy Gentile

Social Work Theses

This quantitative, relational study aimed to examine whether there was a significant relationship between mental health of the female post-abortion and partner support both during and after abortion. A review of the literature indicates that many women do not suffer psychological trauma post-abortion and a large majority of women who have abortions report feeling supported by the prospective father. However, no research has examined if these two groups are in fact one in the same. One hundred forty-three questionnaires were collected on a college campus to measure respondent’s predictions of partner support and emotional well being post-abortion. Results indicate a …
