Life On Point Youth Development Program Outcomes, Christopher S. Horne

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

The widely implemented Life On Point youth development program is intended to promote youths’ psychosocial development and resistance to health risk behaviors. The program was evaluated following an experimental design, with 77 middle school students randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. ANCOVA analysis of pre- and post-program questionnaire data revealed significant, positive differences between program and control group participants on measures of the program’s targeted outcomes, both in terms of statistical significance and substantial effect sizes. Consistent with previous research, control group participants’ outcome indicators worsened over the course of the evaluation, suggesting that Life On Point and similar …

“It’S Not Just You Two”: A Grounded Theory Of Peer-Influenced Jealousy As A Pathway To Dating Violence Among Acculturating Mexican American Adolescents., Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin Williams

Social Work Faculty Publications

Objective: To develop a deeper understanding of how jealousy escalates to physical dating violence within Mexican American adolescent romantic relationships. Method: Using grounded theory, 20 focus groups of self-identified Mexican American adolescents (N = 64; 15–17 years old) were analyzed by level of acculturation and gender. Results: Three distinct “jealous” typologies resulting in dating violence were identified: normative jealousy (typically highly acculturated or bicultural male and female adolescents), jealous and possessive (typically bicultural male adolescents), and jealous and accepting of dating violence norms (typically low acculturated male adolescents). Across types, jealousy was upheld within a peer culture that constructed loose …

Tweeting, Texting, And Facebook Postings: Stirring The Pot With Social Media To Make Drama - Case Study And Participant Observation, Kathleen P. Allen Jan 2014

Tweeting, Texting, And Facebook Postings: Stirring The Pot With Social Media To Make Drama - Case Study And Participant Observation, Kathleen P. Allen

The Qualitative Report

This study of adolescent social drama is located at the intersection of research on adolescent peer relationships, group behaviors, youth culture, and mediated communication. An emergent construct, drama has been conceptualized as social interactions characterized by overreaction, exaggeration, excessive emotionality, prolongation, inclusion of extraneous individuals, inflated importance, and temporary relevance. This case study and participant observation involve a 15-year-old, white, middle class female and her mother. The purpose was two-fold: To determine if the events described map on to existing understandings of drama and to develop emergent themes and hypotheses through grounded theory analysis and ethnographic observation that might expand …

Anchoring Identity In Faith: Narrative Of An Anglo-Asian Muslimah In Britain, Imran Mogra Jan 2014

Anchoring Identity In Faith: Narrative Of An Anglo-Asian Muslimah In Britain, Imran Mogra

The Qualitative Report

This article is based on a narrative of an Anglo-Asian Muslimah, studying in a prominent university in the city of Birmingham, England. The trainee teacher was a suitable candidate for my research for the additional characteristics, which she had. She was born as a Muslimah in England, she was neither totally Asian nor English in reality; she was the daughter of a Pakistani mother and an English father. Using narrative analysis, several key themes, such as family, friendship, and cultural practices, emerged. These themes shed light about her life experiences. Significantly, she reveals the important influence of Islam and faith …

Undertaking As A Concrete Enquiry: A Review Of Penny Tinkler's Using Photographs In Social And Historical Research, Jude Tayaben

The Qualitative Report

In this book review I addressed the utilization of this method as a qualitative enquiry. I highlighted the relevance and significant gaps of the discussions of this book. In using photographs in social and historical research is another undertaking especially to researchers engaging with people, and intends to capture the very essence of experience or certain phenomena. This book realized all the important discourse on how to start the method, to structure, the processes and analysis until its important implications.

Clarifying The Nature Of Resilience: A Meta-Analytic Approach, Matthew Robert Grossman Jan 2014

Clarifying The Nature Of Resilience: A Meta-Analytic Approach, Matthew Robert Grossman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Psychological resilience, conceptualized as the ability to bounce back from stress (Tugade, 2011), has garnered increased attention across various fields of psychology and related disciplines. Despite its popularity, researchers have yet to come to a consensus regarding the nomological network of this construct, as well as its distinctiveness from conceptually similar constructs (i.e., hardiness, grit). In this paper, I use meta-analytic techniques (Hunter & Schmidt, 2004) to quantitatively synthesize three decades of previous empirical work on resilience and related-constructs and their correlates, integrating findings from more than 400 studies. Results show that resilience overlaps substantially with big-five personality traits as …

Case Study in Portland, Oregon This study examines driver and pedestrian behaviors at two enhanced midblock pedestrian crossings in Portland, Oregon. One crossing is on a five-lane arterial with a posted speed of 35/45 miles-per-hour (MPH) and features six rectangular rapid flash beacon (RRFB) assemblies and a narrow median refuge. The other crossing is on a suburban arterial with four travel lanes and a two-way left-turn lane. The crossing is enhanced with four RRFB assemblies and a median island with a “Z” crossing, or Danish offset, designed to encourage pedestrians to face oncoming traffic before completing the second stage of …

Benefit-Cost Evaluation Method For Transit Stop Removal, Zef Wagner Jan 2014

Benefit-Cost Evaluation Method For Transit Stop Removal, Zef Wagner

PSU Transportation Seminars

The introduction of wider stop spacing through the removal or consolidation of existing stops is one method transit agencies can use to reduce travel time and reliability on many transit lines. A great deal of research has been done to provide tools for determining optimal stop spacing, but tools are still needed to help service planners determine the optimal stops to remove. Stop-level bus performance data provide the information needed to develop a method for assessing the total benefits and costs to riders of removing individual stops. This tool compares the benefit to through-riders in terms of travel time savings …

Ecology, Information Literacy And Bernard Lonergan: A Librarian Immersed, Lisa Rose-Wiles Jan 2014

Ecology, Information Literacy And Bernard Lonergan: A Librarian Immersed, Lisa Rose-Wiles

Library Publications

In spring 2013 a group of faculty and administrators completed a series of workshops exploring Bernard Lonergan's General Empirical Method (GEM) and ways to apply it to our teaching. GEM invites students to learn how to think for themselves and discover themselves as learners. There are three initial steps - experiencing, understanding, and judging - which can readily be applied to searching, discovering and evaluating information resources. I report on my collaboration with a Biology professor teaching "Ecology and Stewardship," where we jointly incorporated elements of GEM, information literacy and the research process and developed rubrics for assessing student work.

Bicycling Is Different: Built Environment Relationships To Nonwork Travel, Christopher D. Muhs Jan 2014

Bicycling Is Different: Built Environment Relationships To Nonwork Travel, Christopher D. Muhs

PSU Transportation Seminars

There is growing investment in infrastructure to support non-motorized travel modes in the United States, in particular for bicycling. However, there remains a dearth of knowledge on the relationships between built environments and bicycling for non-work transportation. This issue is exacerbated by researchers and practitioners continuing to combine walking and bicycling into the category “non-motorized modes,” despite the two having many differences. This paper addresses these shortcomings through a segmented analysis of mode choice and mode share for walking, bicycling, and automobile travel. The data used are from a 2011 establishment intercept survey in the Portland, Oregon region and are …

A Longitudinal Look At Electronic Mentoring Relationships, Lyndsey Marie Havill Jan 2014

A Longitudinal Look At Electronic Mentoring Relationships, Lyndsey Marie Havill

Dissertations

Current advancements in information technology are increasingly impacting work relationships. Rapid technological changes have significant implications specifically for workplace mentoring because they may offer faster and more economical ways of building relationships. However, the e-mentoring literature is still evolving, and the extent to which e-mentoring parallels face-to-face mentoring is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of mentoring functions over time and how the development varies depending on the amount and type of computer mediated communication. While career-support was greater at initial points in the relationship, psychosocial-support increased at a greater velocity for mentors. Bandwidth and …

A Study Of Small Talk Among Males: Comparing The U.S. And Japan, Chie Furukawa Jan 2014

A Study Of Small Talk Among Males: Comparing The U.S. And Japan, Chie Furukawa

Dissertations and Theses

This study seeks to understand the social interaction of small talk in two different countries. Defining small talk as 'phatic communion' and 'social talk' as contrasted to 'core business talk' and 'work-related talk,' Holmes (2000) claims that small talk in the workplace is intertwined with main work-talk. Small talk can help build solidarity and rapport, as well as maintain good relationships between workers. Much of the research on small talk has been focused on institutional settings such as business and service interactions; thus, there is a need for research on non-institutional small talk between participants without established relationships.

Research Brief: "The Demographics Of Military Children And Families", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study examines the the demographics of military families, which can be used to can assist in better serving their needs, reducing their stress, and increasing their happiness with military life. The diversity of these families significantly impacts their interaction with their social networks and societal institutions, and would benefit from policy that creates additional programs aimed at helping military children through critical military transition points. Additional research is needed on how younger children operate in military families, and the impact of supports available for spouses caring for younger children during deployments and separation from their spouse.

The Effect Of Crossing The $100 Million Jackpot Threshold On Ticket Sales, Stanton Hudja Jan 2014

The Effect Of Crossing The $100 Million Jackpot Threshold On Ticket Sales, Stanton Hudja

Undergraduate Economic Review

There has been little research done on how consumers react to jackpots that first cross the $100 million threshold. Using two sets of time series data, I measure the effect on demand of being the first jackpot in a series of jackpots to cross the $100 million threshold. In both datasets, there is an additional increase in the growth of lottery ticket sales based solely on being the first jackpot to equal or surpass $100 million. These findings are not consistent with the principle of diminishing marginal utility and suggest a psychological significance of the number 100.
