Fighting Families: Personal And Relationship Factors Associated With Domestic Violence In Latin America, Dallan F. Flake, Dr. Renata Forste
Fighting Families: Personal And Relationship Factors Associated With Domestic Violence In Latin America, Dallan F. Flake, Dr. Renata Forste
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Violence against women is one of Latin America’s most pressing social problems. Over the past twenty years, it has come to be recognized not only as a significant public health concern, but as a human rights issue as well. Latin America is notorious for its high rates of political and social violence. Much less understood is the violence that occurs behind closed doors—between husbands and wives, parents and children. With so much attention centered on Latin America’s corruption, crime, and political instability, it is easily overlooked that the family is perhaps this region’s most violent social institution.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the study of the brain’s electrical activity. It has been used extensively as a research tool as well as in clinical settings. When sensory stimuli are presented and EEG is recorded electrical potential is evoked. The most widely studied of these evoked potentials is called the P300–a large positive wave that occurs about 300 milliseconds after the stimulus is presented. A P300 can be elicited and recorded using any sensory modality. A similar evoked potential is the N450 which occurs about 150 milliseconds after the P300 and is negative in amplitude. Our experiment examined the effect of …

The South African Family: Attitudes Leading To Unmarried Xhosa Mothers, Oertel Sparks, Dr. Carol Ward
Journal of Undergraduate Research
To increase understanding of the family structure of one group in South Africa, I conducted this field study in East London where almost all of the blacks belong to the Xhosa tribe. Family is an important unit of socialization in all societies and is a key element to studying any culture or group of people. Through study, I found that many Xhosa women choose to be single mothers. Therefore, my research question was: Why are many Xhosa mothers choosing to remain unmarried?

Family, Peer, School, And Community Capital: The Compensating Effects Of The Family On Juvenile Delinquency, Benjamin Gibbs, Dr. Stephen Bahr
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I have sought to examine the effects of social capital (family, peer, school and community) on delinquency and to measure the buffering effects of the family when negative peer influence is high. Further understanding of the factors causing delinquency is essential for policy makers and community members. Although millions of dollars are spent by federal, state and local governments to prevent delinquency, a clearer understanding of which forms of capital are the most influential will maximize limited funds and contribute to the most effective solutions.

“The goal of zooarchaeology is to gain a better understanding of the relationship between humans…and other animal populations” (Reitz and Wing 1999:1).
With this in mind, I set out for the Coombs Village archaeological site at Anasazi State Park in Boulder, Utah during the Olympic Break of February 2002. Animal bone, often the only surviving evidence of animals found in the archaeological record, tells a limited story of faunal life in and around areas inhabited by prehistoric humans. Just the species of animal found in an archaeological site offers understanding of the human/animal relationship. Specialized areas of zooarchaeology take further …

In recent years there has been an increasing demand for psychotherapy outcome measures, which can be attributed mainly to the changing health care industry. This, in turn, affects the subsequent demands by corporate purchasers, those in the insurance industry, and government agencies, for evidence of the efficacy of psychotherapy. Although hundreds of therapy measures exist, there are limitations of their use as outcome measures within the managed care system. Most instruments that measure psychotherapy’s efficacy have a very narrow focus while others are designed to address a wider range of clinical issues, and are long and tedious for both clients …

Brandon Q. Jones The Associations between Social Relationships and Scholastic Achievement Faculty Mentor: Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Psychology Any college student could tell you that their social environment influences their scholastic achievement. But what are the factors involved? Do different types of relationships help or hinder our achievement? And in what ways do they help or hinder it? In this experiment, I studied the effects of certain types of social relationships on scholastic achievement by analyzing the degree to which stress and rumination (or time spent thinking about an issue) is associated with these relationships. Originally, I hypothesized that relationships did have …

A Construct Validity Investigation Of Therapeutic Mechanisms In Group: An Analysis Of The Gcq And Cci, Shelby L. Ferrin, Dr. Gary M. Burlingame

Group psychotherapy is a growing field of both psychological research and clinical application. Credit for this growth has been ascribed to a variety of factors, among them the efficiency of seeing multiple clients at one time. Previous research has demonstrated that group therapy is as efficacious in the treatment of many disorders as individual therapy while also being more timeand cost-efficient. The efficacy of small group therapy is frequently attributed to the unique properties of group involvement (e.g., cohesion, avoidance, or engagement). However, researchers find it difficult to measure these properties. Even in research areas where many studies have been …

The influence of topographic and temporal variables on cetacean distribution at a fine-scale is still poorly understood. To study the spatial and temporal distribution of harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena and the poorly known Risso’s dolphin Grampus griseus we carried out land-based observations from Bardsey Island (Wales, UK) in summer (2001–2007). Using Kernel analysis and Generalized Additive Models it was shown that porpoises and Risso’s appeared to be linked to topographic and dynamic cyclic variables with both species using different core areas (dolphins to the West and porpoises to the East off Bardsey). Depth, slope and aspect and a low variation …

The Anchor: 2014
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Being raised in the United States, I internalized racist, sexist, transphobic, heterosexist, classist, ableist, and faithist ways of thinking. And by this, I do not simply mean that I was taught to hate people of color, queer individuals, working class people, or people of different religions. This indoctrination runs much deeper than that. International terrorism is a relatively new phenomenon considering the age of terrorism. Terrorism has been used for over 2,000 years, but international terrorism as we know it today was made possible by technological advances. This entry begins by reviewing pivotal historical events that led to terrorism's use, as well as the underlying reasons for terrorism today. The article then discusses the influence of political stability and culture on international terrorism. Finally, a brief discussion of counter-terrorism strategies highlights the means by which terrorism is prevented.

The Environmental Attitudes Of Byu Students, Chad D. Hill, Dr. Joann Valenti
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Environmental issues have become hot political topics in recent years. Many voters now consider the environmental policies of political candidates. The formation of environmental attitudes has been the subject of many studies. In this research, I measured the environmental attitudes of students enrolled in spring term classes. To learn more about the formation of these attitudes, I correlated those attitudes with knowledge of environmental issues, political party affiliation, media use, involvement in outdoor activities, and their religious beliefs.

The Long-Term Unemployed In The Wake Of The Great Recession, Andrew P. Schaefer
Carsey Publications
Using the Annual Social and Economic Supplement of the Current Population Survey, this brief outlines the demographic and economic characteristics of the long-term unemployed and compares them with their short-term unemployed counterparts. It also describes changes in the composition of the long-term unemployed since the start of the Great Recession. Author Andrew Schaefer reports that the percentage of unemployed workers who were seeking employment for more than six months more than doubled between 2007 and 2013 from 18.4 percent to 39.3 percent and that the long-term unemployed are more likely than the short-term unemployed to live in urban areas. Exploring Communicative Aspects Of Client Satisfaction, Loyalty, And Retention In A Private, Non-Profit Organization: A Qualitative, Interview-Based Study Of Catholic Charities, Amanda Michelle Fortin
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis focuses on Catholic Charities (Hereafter CC), a non-profit agency that provides pregnancy and adoption support to families in times of crisis. Research and agency data reflect a positive association between the amount of time clients engage in services and the resolution of crises. Both theoretically and empirically, a key determinant of the depth and breadth of clients' engagement with both for-profit and non-profit services is their satisfaction with such services. In 2009-2010, CC's in-house, client surveys reported a decreasing level of client engagement with services. One clear trend was that clients discontinued services after thirty days or less. …

Exposure to neighborhood danger during childhood has negative effects that permeate multiple dimensions of childhood. The current study examined whether mothers’, fathers’, and children’s perceptions of neighborhood danger are related to child aggression, whether parental monitoring moderates this relation, and whether harsh parenting mediates this relation. Interviews were conducted with a sample of 1293 children (age M = 10.68, SD = 0.66; 51% girls) and their mothers (n = 1282) and fathers (n = 1075) in nine countries (China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States). Perceptions of greater neighborhood danger were associated with more …
