Detecting Deception Via Eyeblink Frequency Modulation, Brandon S. Perelman Feb 2014

Detecting Deception Via Eyeblink Frequency Modulation, Brandon S. Perelman

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

To assess the efficacy of using eyeblink frequency modulation to detect deception about a third party, 32 participants were sent on a mission to deliver a package to an interviewer. 17 of the participants lied to the interviewer about the details of their mock mission and 15 responded truthfully. During the interview, eyeblink frequency data were collected via electromyography and recorded video. Liars displayed eye- blink frequency suppression while lying, while truth tellers exhibited an increase in eyeblink frequency during the mission relevant questioning period. The compen- satory flurry of eyeblinks following deception observed in previous studies was ab- sent …

The Nature And Nurture Of Intuition, Thomas Q. Sibley Feb 2014

The Nature And Nurture Of Intuition, Thomas Q. Sibley

Forum Lectures

Are people just innately good at mathematics or not? My teaching experience suggests mathematical ability is not just fate: Students develop their mathematical abilities by doing mathematics. In particular we discuss geometric intuition, its connection with geometric reasoning and the possibility of developing them, using examples to get the listeners actively thinking about their own geometric thinking.

“The Cane Of Love:” Social And Cultural Reform Of Corporal Punishment In South Korea, Seney Higginbotham Feb 2014

“The Cane Of Love:” Social And Cultural Reform Of Corporal Punishment In South Korea, Seney Higginbotham

International ResearchScape Journal

With the public release of a very controversial video of a middle school teacher beating a student, much attention has been put on South Korea domestically as well as internationally to establish and reform policies regarding corporal punishment in schools. Since corporal punishment has been practiced in the classroom for centuries, it has been a hard fought battle of rapid social change and conservation of culture between those who wish to protect established cultural norms that accept corporal punishment in the classroom versus progressive ideas that strive to protect the integrity and human rights of school children.

Origins Of Josiah Wedgwood's "Pearlware", George L. Miller Feb 2014

Origins Of Josiah Wedgwood's "Pearlware", George L. Miller

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Close inspection of the documentary record reveals that Josiah Wedgwood's "pearlware" was no more than his own version of a ware already being produced as early as 1775 by other Staffordshire potters. Wedgwood introduced a new name, Pearl White, to distinguish his product from that of his competitors, which they called China Glaze. This is an important revision to ceramic chronology because "pearlware" has been considered by most historical archaeologists as a firm 1779 terminus post quem for archaeological deposits. This new knowledge will force a reconsideration of many of the contexts in which so-called pearlware has been found.

Analysis Of Faunal Remains From Queen Anne Square, Newport, Rhode Island, Timothy S. Young Feb 2014

Analysis Of Faunal Remains From Queen Anne Square, Newport, Rhode Island, Timothy S. Young

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Queen Anne Square, Newport, Rhode Island, is a northeastern coastal site. This report presents the results of the analysis of faunal remains from three features representing different 18th-century households. The data show a heavy dependence on domestic animals. All three features contain over 90% domestic animals by biomass. The site closely resembles southeastern sites in percentages of cow and pig MNI. It also resembles other northeastern sites, however, in its high percentage of caprine MNI. This is probably indicative of an intermediate dietary pattern. There are also differences among the features; these can be attributed either to the economic status …

An Admirable Police Maintained: Evidence Of Sanitary Practices At The New Windsor Cantonment, Edward J. Lenik Feb 2014

An Admirable Police Maintained: Evidence Of Sanitary Practices At The New Windsor Cantonment, Edward J. Lenik

Northeast Historical Archaeology

An archaeological survey at the 1782-83 winter encampent of the Continental Army at New Windsor, New York, has revealed the presence of several large pits or depressions located some 250ft (76.2m) from the site of the soldiers' huts. Test excavations and chemcial analysis of the soils have determined that these pits were utilized as latrines or necessaries. The land use pattern at the site, including the location of the soldiers' huts and the delineation of use areas for trash disposal and necessaries, reflects the officers' successful attempt to impose order and discipline on the troops.

Landfill And Health, A Municipal Concern Or, Telling It Like It Was, Joan H. Geismar Feb 2014

Landfill And Health, A Municipal Concern Or, Telling It Like It Was, Joan H. Geismar

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Land reclamation in port cities is a worldwide phenomenon that clearly represents economic considerations and, often, intensifying urbanization. Analysis of the fill matrix of two New York City sites suggests that the imposition of municipal controls may be one facet of the urbanizing process documented in the archaeological record. Differences between the fill from the 175 Water Street site, an East River block filled in the 18th century, and Site 1 of the Washington Street Urban Renewal Area adjacent to the Hudson River, an early 19th-century fill site, are best explained by the introduction of city ordinances to regulate land …

The Use Of Opal Phytolith Analysis In A Comprehensive Environmental Study: An Example From 19th-Century Lowell, Massachusetts, William F. Fisher, Gerald K. Kelso Feb 2014

The Use Of Opal Phytolith Analysis In A Comprehensive Environmental Study: An Example From 19th-Century Lowell, Massachusetts, William F. Fisher, Gerald K. Kelso

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The value of opal phytolith analysis is demonstrated in a comprehensive environmental study of a historical site, the Kirk Street Agents' House, Lowell, Massachusett. A method to measure phytolith degradation percentages is tested and shown to yield similar results to pollen corrosion indices; further research on this new method is suggested, however. Fluctuations in two classes of grass phytoliths indicate changing environmental conditions that support and expand upon changes noted in the pollen spectra. The results of the phytolith analysis are integrated with information derived from documentary research, artifactual analysis, stratigraphic interpretation, and other ethnobotanical methods to arrive at conclusions …

Archaeologically Defining The Earlier Garden Landscapes At Morven: Preliminary Results, Anne E. Yentsch, Naomi F. Miller, Barbara Paca, Dolores Piperno Feb 2014

Archaeologically Defining The Earlier Garden Landscapes At Morven: Preliminary Results, Anne E. Yentsch, Naomi F. Miller, Barbara Paca, Dolores Piperno

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The first phase of archaeology at Morven was designed to test the potential for further study of the early garden landscape at a ca. 1758 house in Princeton, New Jersey. The research included intensive botanical analysis using a variety of archaeobotanical framework. A study was also made of the garden's topography using map analysis combined with subsurface testing. Information on garden features related to the design of earlier garden surfaces suggests the ways in which the Stockton family manipulated their estate to convey a social image of the family to the local Princeton community. This, in turn, provides information that, …

What Are Shoshone Knives?, Cindy A. Eccles Feb 2014

What Are Shoshone Knives?, Cindy A. Eccles

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This research project began in pursuit of three goals: (1) establishing the temporal and spatial distribution of distinctive stone blfaces labeled as “Shoshone” knives, (2) determining the function and range of morphological variability of these bifaces and (3) ascertaining whether the label “Shoshone” knives, which centers on ethnic affiliation, is appropriate. Use of this term also raises the issue of style versus function as a cause for the distinctive shape of this biface. Studying this element of the archaeological record will further our understanding of the little studied Late Prehistoric and Protohistoric eras.

These great displacements are turning points during which many cultural beliefs and practices are lost.

Boom And Bust: A Look At The Changing Economic And Demographic Profile Of Grand County, Utah, Greg B. Hall Feb 2014

Boom And Bust: A Look At The Changing Economic And Demographic Profile Of Grand County, Utah, Greg B. Hall

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Inter-Mountain West counties who historically have tied their economic livelihood to the exploitation of primary resources have been susceptible to cycles of boom and bust. The history of Grand County, Utah, depicts this precise paradigm. In the 1950’s, when a young Texan discovered uranium in the resource rich Colorado Plateau, north of Moab, economic prosperity and a population explosion came the way of Grand County. Mines in the county processed 95% of all uranium ores for the nation. The population reached 10,000 people, and wealth flowed from the pits of this rich resource. The market lulled soon thereafter, and intermittent …

Spectrographic Acoustic Cue Analyses For Foreign Accent Reduction Speech Therapy, Lance W. Porter Feb 2014

Spectrographic Acoustic Cue Analyses For Foreign Accent Reduction Speech Therapy, Lance W. Porter

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In a world where more and more opportunities are opening up on an international level, it has become increasingly important to be able to communicate effectively. Accent reduction therapy was developed to help people reduce foreign or regional accents that would otherwise put them at a disadvantage. International students who are speakers of English as a second language (ESL), upon starting school in the United States, will often struggle because of strong accented speech in the already competitive world of academics. Strong accents can adversely effect their ability to communicate and succeed in the classroom. Upon graduation, the ability to …

Effects Of Handedness And Gender On The Surface Area Of The Human Corpus Callosum: A Preliminary Study Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging, James B. Pinkston

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Several studies have found differences in the human corpus callosum across gender and handedness (Aboitiz, Scheibel, Fisher, & Zaidel, 1992; Burke & Yeo, 1994; Cowell, eta!., 1993; de Lacoste-Utamsing & Holloway, 1982; Denenberg, eta!., 1991; Habib, eta!., 1991; Johnson & Bigler, eta!., 1994; Johnson & Farnworth, eta!., 1994; Laissy, et al .. 1993; Potter & Graves, 1988; Steinmetz, eta!., 1992; Witelson, 1989; Witelson, 1991; Witelson & Goldsmith, 1991). Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Child And Adolescent Group Psychotherapy: A Meta-Analytic Review, Corey D. Randall, Dr. Matthew J. Haag

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Effective treatment of children and adolescents in psychotherapy is crucial to alleviating the distress and suffering resulting from psychopathology (Kazdin, 1993). Dysfunctional behavior, if not appropriately addressed, can result in irreversible developmental outcomes. The importance of evaluating treatment to address childhood difficulties becomes even more vital in a managed health care system that stresses accountability and demands evidence of progress. It is for this reason that an examination of the current treatment approaches and techniques must be undertaken.

Memory And Aging, Carlos T. Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

For many years now, the field of neuropsychology has been looking for connections between brain and behavior. We can now determine that the brain is responsible for most, if not all, of our physical, emotional and even cognitive functioning. It is indeed the “master organ.” IUs my desire to be able to further the work that has already been done in this field in an effort to finally be able to discover exactly how this miraculous organ works, specifically in terms of how it relates to cognitive functioning.

Tax Structure And Revenue Instability: The Great Recession And The States, Howard Chernick, Cordelia Reimers, Jennifer Tennant Feb 2014

Tax Structure And Revenue Instability: The Great Recession And The States, Howard Chernick, Cordelia Reimers, Jennifer Tennant

Publications and Research

The Great Recession had the most severe impact on state tax revenues of any downturn since the Great Depression. We hypothesize that states with more progressive tax structures are more vulnerable to economic downturns, and that progressivity and income volatility may interact to amplify the recession’s fiscal impact. We find that, while potential revenue exposure is greater in more progressive states, the most important source of variation was differences in income concentration and capital gains shares in the top 5 percent of taxpayers. Though the interaction between income volatility and high tax burdens at the top did produce large decreases …
