Engaging Engagement: Framing The Civic Education Movement In Higher Education, Chad Woolard
Engaging Engagement: Framing The Civic Education Movement In Higher Education, Chad Woolard
Theses and Dissertations
Civic education in higher education is housed in various types of institutions (i.e. community colleges, four year universities, public and private institutions), institutional offices, academic departments, and larger, cross-campus initiatives and organizations. Civic education programs promote numerous activities to foster student engagement both inside and outside the classroom. Many in higher education have embraced the civic education movement; however, as with other social movements, the civic education movement is still a contested area. Defining civic education (i.e. civic engagement, service learning, political engagement, community engagement, etc.) becomes problematic because there seems to be as many terms for civic education as …

A New Approach For The Analysis Of Hyperspectral Data: Theory And Sensitivity Analysis Of The Moment Distance Method, E.A. L. Salas, G. M. Henebry
Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications
We present the Moment Distance (MD) method to advance spectral analysis in vegetation studies. It was developed to take advantage of the information latent in the shape of the reflectance curve that is not available from other spectral indices. Being mathematically simple but powerful, the approach does not require any curve transformation, such as smoothing or derivatives. Here, we show the formulation of the MD index (MDI) and demonstrate its potential for vegetation studies. We simulated leaf and canopy reflectance samples derived from the combination of the PROSPECT and SAIL models to understand the sensitivity of the new method to …
Identifying The Effect Of Open Access On Citations Using A Panel Of Science Journals, Mark J. Mccabe, Christopher M. Snyder
Identifying The Effect Of Open Access On Citations Using A Panel Of Science Journals, Mark J. Mccabe, Christopher M. Snyder
Dartmouth Scholarship
An open‐access journal allows free online access to its articles, obtaining revenue from fees charged to submitting authors or from institutional support. Using panel data on science journals, we are able to circumvent problems plaguing previous studies of the impact of open access on citations. In contrast to the huge effects found in these previous studies, we find a more modest effect: moving from paid to open access increases cites by 8% on average in our sample. The benefit is concentrated among top‐ranked journals. In fact, open access causes a statistically significant reduction in cites to the bottom‐ranked journals in …

The Anchor, Volume 127.17: February 19, 2014, Hope College
The Anchor: 2014
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

A Longitudinal Case Study Of The Impact Of Democracy On Food Security In Ghana And Implications For Theory Development, Katelyn Marie Colaric
A Longitudinal Case Study Of The Impact Of Democracy On Food Security In Ghana And Implications For Theory Development, Katelyn Marie Colaric
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis reports the results of a qualitative, longitudinal case study of Ghana that examined the impact of democracy on food security within Ghana since its democratization in 1992. First, the study reviews existing literature about food security, a newly-emerging concern in political science, as well as the literature on democracy and human rights. To fill the gaps in existing literature regarding the impact of democracy on food security, [and the author finds it overzealous to prove that democracy always benefits food security levels across varying states, cultures, and years] the thesis examines food security developments in Ghana, a developing …

Summary Of Creative Research Grant Results: The Effects Of 15th And 16th Century Scholarship On The American Founding, Owen D. Yeates, Dr. Richard Vetterli
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The scope of my initial research proposal was quite wide, simply stating that I would study the writings of the Cambridge Platonists and Oxford Reformers and those surrounding them to discover the effects of religious thought on the concepts of virtue and liberty as transmitted from the initial Christian humanist movement in Italy to the American Founders. After reading some information gathered from Dr. Vetterli I decided to focus my research on Isaac Newton and included science and reason with religion, virtue, and liberty in the thrust of my research.
Law Schools Environments Study, Jacob S. Walker, Alf Pratt
Law Schools Environments Study, Jacob S. Walker, Alf Pratt
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The researchers aimed to establish a set of criteria for judging the environments at various law schools, and then apply these criteria to five national law schools. The students specifically examined the academic and social environments at each school as they relate to a Latter-Day Saint family. A review of the literature on married graduate students suggests areas of importance to the student’s family. An email survey was used to assess housing availability, transportation, community activities, ward activity and support, crime, faculty support, and financial aid. The results of the survey are presented and compared with other rankings of law …

Justice George Sutherland: The Forgotten Utahn, William Lyle Stamps, Dr. Paul Edwards
Journal of Undergraduate Research
George Alexander Sutherland was the first and only Utahn to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court. Curiously, he isn’t mentioned in Utah History books. Further, his national reputation is not much brighter. While acknowledged as a “good” justice, he isn’t ranked with the greatest. Despite his many accomplishments and lasting influence, he has been forgotten (Peterson 1980, 310).
An Analysis Of Nafta’S Effects On The Us And Mexican Apparel Trade, John F. Yoder, Dr. Scott Bradford
An Analysis Of Nafta’S Effects On The Us And Mexican Apparel Trade, John F. Yoder, Dr. Scott Bradford
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Prior to the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement, critics predicted NAFTA would harm the US economy. Even proponents of NAFTA admitted that free trade between the US, Canada, and Mexico would shift low-skilled jobs to Mexico where such work could be done more cheaply. Most economists predicted that such a job shift would occur in the apparel industry, which employs low-skilled workers. For example, Alain de Janvrey noted that “intra-industry trade in this case [between NAFTA countries] is importantly motivated by the chase for cheap labor and hence can induce systematic plant relocation toward Mexico” (de Janvrey, …
Policy Making In Welfare Reform, Misty May Wright, Dr. Donald Forsyth
Policy Making In Welfare Reform, Misty May Wright, Dr. Donald Forsyth
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper is to report the results of my study on policy-making in welfare reform. While interning at a special interest group for disability issues in Washington D. C., I conducted ethnographic research through ethnographic interviewing and participant observation. It was my intent to profile the culture of policy-makers, specifically in welfare reform, as part of a more extensive study to compare their culture to those affected by policy. I found that the primary markers of the policy-making culture are information exchange and meetings.

Organizing Disability: Producing Knowledge In A University Accommodations Office, Shelby Forbes
Organizing Disability: Producing Knowledge In A University Accommodations Office, Shelby Forbes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As it is generally conceived, knowledge belongs to the individual: we imagine how a lightbulb suddenly illuminates above the scientist's head, a muse whispers in the philosopher's ear, cogs slide into place as wheels turn in the thinker's mind, and, "Eureka!" an idea is born. As an individualistic experience, knowledge is secure in the repository of the mind, a "steel trap" as it is so often referred, which can only be breached by the most sophisticated and precise methods. From these popular representations of knowledge, one can extrapolate further to conclude that knowledge is not made, it is received. All …

"We're Taking Slut Back": Analyzing Racialized Gender Politics In Chicago's 2012 Slutwalk March, Aphrodite Kocieda
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examined bodied activism in Chicago's Slutwalk 2012 march, a contemporary movement initiated in Toronto, Canada that publicly challenged the mainstream sentiment that women are responsible for their own rape and victimization. Adopting an intersectional approach, I used textual analysis to discuss photographs posted on the official Chicago Slutwalk website to explore the ways this form of public bodied protest discursively engages women's empowerment from movement feminism as well as third wave and postfeminisms. I additionally analyzed the overall website and its promotional materials for the Slutwalk marches as well as how Chicago's photographic representations privilege the white female …

Beyond Search: Information Literacy, Special Collections, And The First Year, Stefanie R. Bluemle, Sarah M. Horowitz
Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works
Recent research in information literacy (IL) suggests librarians should shift the emphasis of IL instruction toward higher-level concepts rather than search mechanics. This session describes how the Augustana library drew upon the results of local assessments and national research to re-imagine its first-year learning outcomes so as to focus on higher-level skills and recognize the importance of special collections in teaching IL in the college’s required first-year sequence. We address transforming IL pedagogy throughout the library as well as designing special collections as a hands-on learning laboratory.
