Consumer Satisfaction With Aging & Disability Resource Connection: Round 3, Diana White, Serena Worthington

Institute on Aging Publications

This report describes the third round of consumer satisfaction surveys conducted with users of Aging and Disabilities Resource Connections (ADRC) of Oregon. The telephone survey was conducted between October 18 and November 2, 2013 and focused on three of the core ADRC functions: 1) information, referral, and awareness; 2) options counseling (OC); and 3) streamlined eligibility determination for public programs. The ADRC Advisory Committee had previously established benchmarks to be used in determining success for many aspects of the program described in this report.

Development Of Future Land Cover Change Scenarios In The Metropolitan Fringe, Oregon, U.S., With Stakeholder Involvement, Heejun Chang, Roberrt W. Hoyer

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

We describe a future land cover scenario construction process developed under consultation with a group of stakeholders from our study area. We developed a simple geographic information system (GIS) method to modify a land cover dataset and then used qualitative data extracted from the stakeholder storyline to modify it. These identified variables related to our study area’s land use regulation system as the major driver in the placement of new urban growth on the landscape; and the accommodation of new population as the determinant of its growth rate. The outcome was a series of three scenario maps depicting a gradient …

Collaborative Organizational Infrastructures To Support Open Access Journals, Marianne A. Buehler

Library Faculty Presentations

With the advancement of open access (OA) journal publishing opportunities in partnership with presses and faculty, libraries in alignment with intersecting academic values are fulfilling a need by supporting sustainable models of scholarly communication that incorporate disseminating faculty scholarship in collaboration with library and/or press staff and editors to “start up” an OA journal or transform an existing print journal to OA. Library staff that embrace faculty or student publishing partnerships are structuring and utilizing their scholarly communication skill sets by positioning the availability of open access publications to disseminate quality research results. University presses are also forging alliances with …

Utilizing Ir Content Discovery Streams, Marianne A. Buehler

Library Faculty Presentations

Institutional repositories (IRs) host an abundance of unique and valued digital content. The premise of garnering scholarly and local collection materials is to engage them for visibility and accessibility. As an additional tool to assist in the process of creating an infrastructure for reachable content, the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway tool enables academic libraries to target individual repository collections to minimally harvest the metadata and be visible through WorldCat.org and OAIster. Collection items display their metadata while available full-text deposits from the Gateway create links to expose an IR’s record and the object itself that could include an article or …

Mountain Monitor - 4th Quarter 2013, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro Mar 2014

Mountain Monitor - 4th Quarter 2013, Kenan Fikri, Mark Muro

Mountain Monitor Quarterly

The quarter’s Mountain Monitor finds that the pace of economic recovery in the Mountain West region’s major metropolitan areas converged toward that of the rest of the nation in the last quarter of 2013.

While quarterly performance on the Monitor’s four indicators of economic recovery—employment, output, the unemployment rate, and house prices—varied considerably across the 10 major metro areas of the region, their combined performance broadly slowed to track with the rate of national economic recovery. The quarter’s average job growth remained unchanged in the region at 0.4 percent as the national economy caught up. The gap between the national …

Fostering Children’S Interest In Science Learning Through The Use Of A Hands-On Gardening Activity, Erika Kimball, Hannah Corry Mar 2014

Fostering Children’S Interest In Science Learning Through The Use Of A Hands-On Gardening Activity, Erika Kimball, Hannah Corry

Psychology and Child Development

In this project, we reviewed existing understandings of how children and families engage in informal science learning during visits to museums and gardens. We then developed and implemented a learning workshop designed to increase children’s science learning and interest by engaging them in activities related to gardening and plant growth. Our workshop was titled “Little Farmers” and was a one-day event that took place at the San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum. The main goal was to facilitate parent-child interactions in an informal science learning setting. In order to do this, we developed several activities that included: seed planting, reading, coloring …

Trends In Midwifery In The United States, Alexandra P. Alvarez Mar 2014

Trends In Midwifery In The United States, Alexandra P. Alvarez

Social Sciences

Midwives have become more popular in recent years, and a rising percentage of women have been choosing midwives over doctors. Originally midwives were mostly used by minority women, but now more caucasian women are finding midwives to be a natural and preferable way to give birth. Due to this change in trend, midwives are becoming more accepted in society. This paper examines and defines the reasons behind the changing trends of midwifery in the United States. Specifically, if this changing trend has to deal with interventions, such as pitocin or cesarean sections, by doctors to speed up the delivery process. …

An Examination Of The Benefits That Adventure And Wilderness Therapy Has On Cancer Fighters And Survivors, Anna Wagner

Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration

It has been shown that young adult cancer fighters and survivors suffer from various mental and physical barriers after being diagnosed with cancer. It is common for cancer fighters and survivors at this age group, 18-39 years old, to feel a sense of depression from the lack of support available for their therapeutic needs. Studies have shown that adventure therapy has valuable benefits that cancer fighters and survivors can transfer into their daily lives. The purpose of this study was to find outcomes of participants in First Descents, a non-profit organization. This study was conducted using means-end theory to examine …

User Interface Design For Online Social Media, Jackie R. Hayes

Graphic Communication

The purpose of this study was to identify implementation techniques of a successful user interface for an online social media application. Interviews were conducted with three employees from three separate social media applications to compare how designers approach user interface design differently. The working professionals were asked a series of user interface design questions about the social media application for which they work and help design. The interview responses were compared to the results of the Voice of the Customer (VOC) survey where 100 online social media (OSM) users were surveyed at random about their user interface design preferences within …

The Changing Format For Delivering An Effective Message Using Video And Multimedia In Education, Instruction, And Various Forms Of Communications: A Descriptive Analysis Using Public Relations Theory, Rachael Leigh Burnham

Journalism

ABSTRACT

Given the evolving nature of the forms of mass media in communication, it is imperative to stay up-to-date with the changes that occur in developing platforms of technology, as well as how these advancements are effecting new generations of learners and communicators. Generation Y students have developed a spectrum of learning styles and preferences due to their deep rooted connection to technology that has caused a conflict in learning with traditional, written instruction and communication. No longer do students just want to either read or listen, and video or multimedia platforms can provide them with the resources they may …

They Can And They Should: Undergraduates Providing Peer Reference And Instruction, Brett B. Bodemer Mar 2014

They Can And They Should: Undergraduates Providing Peer Reference And Instruction, Brett B. Bodemer

Library Scholarship

Peer learning dynamics have proven powerful in collegiate contexts. These dynamics should be leveraged at the undergraduate level in academic libraries for reference provision and basic information literacy instruction. Drawing on the literature of peer learning, documented examples of peer reference and instruction in academic libraries, and preliminary evidence from current practice at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo, this article provides support from the pedagogical standpoint that undergraduates not only can provide peer reference and instruction, but should. The relevance to other institutions and additional assessment methods for establishing the efficacy of peer instruction are also discussed.

Suggested Practices For Making I-O Connections: Let’S Build Bridges And Grow I-O!, Joseph A. Allen, Tara S. Behrend, Suzanne T. Bell, Victoria J. Smoak

Psychology Faculty Publications

It may come as no surprise, but there are an awful lot of people who have no idea what I-O pychology is or what I-O psychologists do. Common reactions from new acquaintances include, “Ooo, I could really use some help organizing my home and be a more industrious person” or “Wow, that’s a mouthful” or “No really, what do you do for a living?” Perhaps even more alarming is the number of students across universities who aren’t introduced to I-O—even if they are psychology majors! We are struck by the number of prospective graduate students who tell us that they …

Family Incivility And Job Performance: A Moderated Mediated Model Of Psychological Distress And Core Self-Evaluation, Sandy Lim, Kenneth Tai Mar 2014

Family Incivility And Job Performance: A Moderated Mediated Model Of Psychological Distress And Core Self-Evaluation, Sandy Lim, Kenneth Tai

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study extends the stress literature by exploring the relationship between family incivility and job performance. We examine whether psychological distress mediates the link between family incivility and job performance. We also investigate how core self-evaluation might moderate this mediated relationship. Data from a 2-wave study indicate that psychological distress mediates the relationship between family incivility and job performance. In addition, core self-evaluation moderates the relationship between family incivility and psychological distress but not the relationship between psychological distress and job performance. The results hold while controlling for general job stress, family-to-work conflict, and work-to-family conflict. The findings suggest that …

The Gendered Way Of Hooking Up Among College Students, Phyllis Baker, B. Keith Crew, Kevin T. Leicht Mar 2014

The Gendered Way Of Hooking Up Among College Students, Phyllis Baker, B. Keith Crew, Kevin T. Leicht

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This study explores gender differences in sexual socialization as a determinant of hooking up by college students. Survey results for 469 respondents show both generic (alcohol consumption and sexual socialization through pornography) and gender specific (gender-related attitudes) mechanisms that explain men’s higher rates of hooking up. Men engage in the generic behavioral correlates of hooking up more often than women. Women with patriarchal attitudes report more hooking up and men with rape supportive attitudes report more hooking up. Efforts by college administrators to reduce rates of hooking up should take into consideration alcohol consumption, pornography, and gender related attitudes.

Stranger Danger: Parenthood And Child Presence Increase The Envisioned Bodily Formidability Of Menacing Men, Daniel M.T. Fessler, Colin Holbrook, Jeremy S. Pollack, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook Mar 2014

Stranger Danger: Parenthood And Child Presence Increase The Envisioned Bodily Formidability Of Menacing Men, Daniel M.T. Fessler, Colin Holbrook, Jeremy S. Pollack, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Due to altriciality and the importance of embodied capital, children’s fitness is contingent on parental investment. Injury suffered by a parent therefore degrades the parent’s fitness both by constraining reproduction and by diminishing the fitness of existing offspring. Due to the latter added cost, compared to non-parents, parents should be more cautious in hazardous situations, including potentially agonistic interactions. Prior research indicates that relative formidability is conceptualized in terms of size and strength. As erroneous under-estimation of a foe’s formidability heightens the risk of injury, parents should therefore conceptualize a potential antagonist as larger, stronger, and of more sinister intent …

(Re)Mixing ‘School Spirit’: Spectacular Youth Subcultures As Resistance To Cultures Of Control, Evangeline L. Semark Mar 2014

(Re)Mixing ‘School Spirit’: Spectacular Youth Subcultures As Resistance To Cultures Of Control, Evangeline L. Semark

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This project examines the way in which the U.S. nation-state works through cultural institutions such as schools and the media to create ideological cultures of control. A main argument of this project is that control cultures (re)produce an essentialist framework of an “All-American” dominant culture rooted in the ideology of whiteness through which youth identity – and to a larger extent, American national identity – is to be conceptualized and created. Cultural analysis is used to show how the articulation of dominant ideology works through discursive formations to shape the racial identities and regulate the bodies of students, parents, and …

National Geographics: Toward A “Federalism Function” Of American Tort Law, Riaz Tejani Mar 2014

National Geographics: Toward A “Federalism Function” Of American Tort Law, Riaz Tejani

San Diego Law Review

This Article will situate the federalism function among existing scholarly frameworks and assess the “contoured” approach to federal and state power balancing across the existing subject matter of torts. Part II will assess conflicting characterizations of tort law as on one hand “private” and on the other “public” law. Part III will define and explain competing functions of tort law with an eye to whether federalism fits the common criteria of these coexisting objectives, goals, purposes, and methods for adjudication. In Part IV, the Article will explore historical and contemporary roles of federalism to understand why this process becomes so …

Sabbath Keeping Internalization: Well Being And Need Satisfaction, Cheryl Simpson Mar 2014

Sabbath Keeping Internalization: Well Being And Need Satisfaction, Cheryl Simpson

Posters, Presentations, and Papers

In this study I examine a possible correlation between Sabbath-keeping experiences and well-being as a function of religious internalization levels. I also ask whether that relationship is mediated by need satisfaction. My sample included Seventh-day Adventist community church goers. I surveyed a small Midwestern congregation about their Sabbath-keeping experiences, need satisfaction, and overall well-being. To ensure that my sample consisted of church goers, I only surveyed members at the church service. I predict that a higher level of religious internalization of Sabbath-keeping practices and fulfillment of need satisfaction will be more conducive to well-being.

The Mediating Effect Of General Organizational Means-Efficacy In The Relationships Between Organizational Context And Employee Attitudes, Kevin Cobb Mar 2014

The Mediating Effect Of General Organizational Means-Efficacy In The Relationships Between Organizational Context And Employee Attitudes, Kevin Cobb

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The current study examines the mediating role of General Organizational Means‑efficacy (GOME) in the relationships between organizational context and employee attitudes. The organizational context consists of leadership support, centralization, and emphasis on training and development; and employee attitudes consist of job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and career outcomes. The purpose of this study is to reveal what contextual factors in an organization may affect employees’ perceptions of resources available and in turn affects employee attitudes. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze these relationships, and it was found that leadership support and an emphasis on training and development were positively related …

The Unbreakable Circle: An Intellectual History Of Michel Foucault, Chris Mb Moreland Mar 2014

The Unbreakable Circle: An Intellectual History Of Michel Foucault, Chris Mb Moreland

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The following is a chronologically ordered internal intellectual history of Michel Foucault. The objective of this analysis is to determine whether or not Foucault provides a viable critical social theory of bourgeois society. In order to examine this topic, I trace the development of Foucault’s thought during his early, pre-archaeological stage, his archaeological stage, and his genealogical stage. I frame Foucault’s stages as attempts to overcome Kant’s subject/object division—or the paradox that man operates as both a meaning-giving subject and an empirical object—that one encounters in discourses pertaining to the social sciences. Foucault’s pre-archaeological stage is characterized by two humanistic …

Tunnel Road Safety: A Look At Older Drivers' Performance And Sight Impairment, Edith Lopez Mar 2014

Tunnel Road Safety: A Look At Older Drivers' Performance And Sight Impairment, Edith Lopez

Master's Theses

In California, there is an observed trend in which collisions cluster in and around tunnels. The break in road continuity created by the tunnels disturbs traffic flow that can lead to collisions. One of the main contrasts between open roads and tunnel roads occurs in lighting. Drivers with sight deficiencies are unable to adapt their sight to the change in the lighting environment and may crash due to misperception of road alignment, vehicle’s speed and other physiological reactions, such as tension. The suspect population group of crashes occurring under the influence of tunnels conditions is older drivers.

The literature suggests …
