Review: The Color Of Success: Asian Americans And The Origins Of The Model Minority Myth By Ellen Wu, Justin Kh Tse Mar 2014

Review: The Color Of Success: Asian Americans And The Origins Of The Model Minority Myth By Ellen Wu, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Weaving rich institutional histories of groups that have purported to speak for all Asian Americans, like the Japanese American Citizens League and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association, Ellen Wu’s The Color of Success meticulously describes how their claims to represent their ethnic communities were vigorously contested by Japanese and Chinese Americans themselves from the 1930s to the 1960s. Wu sets these representational challenges against the larger backdrop of the rise of an American liberal political framework and its assimilationist agenda for racial minorities in the United States in the 1930s, which was produced by the geopolitical challenges of totalitarian fascism …

Primitive Accumulation, New Enclosures, And Global Land Grabs: A Theoretical Intervention, Onur Ulas Ince Mar 2014

Primitive Accumulation, New Enclosures, And Global Land Grabs: A Theoretical Intervention, Onur Ulas Ince

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Recent critical analyses of global land grabs have variously invoked global capitalism and neocolonialism to account for this trend. One line of inquiry approaches land grabs as instances of "primitive accumulation of capital" whereby lands in the Global South are "enclosed" and brought within the ambit of global capitalism. Another perspective invokes the history of Anglo-American colonialism for critiquing the developmentalist discourse that depicts Africa as the "last frontier" to be tamed by the techno-industrial civilization of the North. This essay integrates these two perspectives by elaborating capitalism as an irreducibly colonial formation with global inceptions. I begin with a …

Poverty And Service Delivery In Suburban America Framing Paper, Debra J. Rog, Kathryn W. Hexter, Kathryn A. Henderson, David Hubble, John R. Haight, Martena C. Reed, Austin Boxler

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

In the United States today, contrary to popular belief, living in the suburbs is not synonymous with living the American dream. An unprecedented number of people in the suburbs are living on household incomes of less than $20,000, many on much less. Increasingly, individuals and their families need to rely on services and public benefits to meet their basic needs (Kneebone & Berube, 2013).

Over the past 30 years, poverty in the suburbs has grown due to multiple factors, including job decentralization, shifts in the location of affordable and subsidized housing, and the relocation to the suburbs of lower income …

Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang

Graphic Communication

This research explored the creative element of subway map creation in light of its effectiveness. Printed subway maps, used often for metropolitan cities and areas, are limited in physical dimension and scale, carrying minimal information. The New York, San Francisco Bay Area, Tokyo, Paris, London and Moscow subway maps highlight similar design and abstraction that fulfill the basic necessary elements for subway patrons. Over the years since the first metro map for each city was created, maps have become more simplified by removing physical land features and reference points to make way for expanding and new subway lines, stations, and …

Visual Communication And The Digital Turn, Bettina Fabos Mar 2014

Visual Communication And The Digital Turn, Bettina Fabos

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I am very excited about the Digital Turn on multiple levels as a way of expressing ideas in visual form and making them more accessible and finding different ways to tell stories. As Joan Didion wrote, “we tell ourselves stories to live,” and I live and breathe that phrase.

For this presentation, my aim is to show you the new forms of communication that excite me to no end, and then talk about how our relationship with new media content producers has drastically changed. If you have never heard of SnowFall, an incredibly impressive piece of interactive media that …

Oil Price Shocks And Real Exchange Rate Movement In Nigeria, M. K. Tule, D. Osude Mar 2014

Oil Price Shocks And Real Exchange Rate Movement In Nigeria, M. K. Tule, D. Osude

Economic and Financial Review

This paper investigated the relationship between oil price and real exchange rate movement in Nigeria. Crude oil exports account for over 90 per cent of Nigeria's foreign exchange earnings hence, the economy may be vulnerable to instability in international oil prices, which the country as a small open economy, cannot influence. Using monthly data covering the period 2000 to 2013, this study employs GARCH process to test the relationship between oil price and exchange rate volatility in Nigeria. The results of GARCH (1,1) and EGARCH (1,1) suggest the persistence of volatility between real oil prices and the real exchange rate. …

The Sensitivity Of Nigerian Stock Exchange Sectors To Macroeconomic Risk Factors, A. E. Ikoku

Economic and Financial Review

This paper investigated the sensitivity of sectoral index returns on the Nigerian Stock Exchange to macroeconomic risk factors such as the spread between deposit and lending rates of banks, the slope of the yield curve, broad money supply, interest rates, exchange rates, inflation and the international price of oil. We found that the Banking, Food and Beverage, and Insurance sectors were sensitive to some macroeconomic risk factors but not to others. The Oil and Gas sector was sensitive to the slope of the yield curve only. This study estimated the elasticities of macroeconomic factors in the Nigerian Stock Exchange using …

An Examination Of The Structural Inflation Dynamics In Nigeria, O. J. Odonye, S. O. Odeniran, A. O. Oduyemi, O. J. Olaoye, K. J. Ajayi Mar 2014

An Examination Of The Structural Inflation Dynamics In Nigeria, O. J. Odonye, S. O. Odeniran, A. O. Oduyemi, O. J. Olaoye, K. J. Ajayi

Economic and Financial Review

This study examines the dynamics of inflation in Nigeria, including the structural evolution as well as the direction of its movement with a view to designing appropriate policy measures to rein in the inflationary pressures. The study utilized quarterly data from 1970(1) to 2013 (4) except for Bureau de Change (BDC) premium where the duration was 1991(1) to 2013 (4) based on Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. The results show that structural factors like budget deficit, rainfall, variation in export, exchange rate premium have profound influence on movement in CPI in Nigeria during the period.

Foreign Direct Investment Trade Nexus In Nigeria: Do Structural Breaks Matter?, S. Mohammed, B. L. Ekundayo Mar 2014

Foreign Direct Investment Trade Nexus In Nigeria: Do Structural Breaks Matter?, S. Mohammed, B. L. Ekundayo

Economic and Financial Review

ln this paper, three innovations are introduced to the literature on the Foreign Direct Investment (FDl) -trade nexus; identification and consideration of structural breaks in the underlying time series data; use of disaggregated data set that captures the oil and non-oil dichotomy of the Nigerian economy; and introduction of identified break in the short-run model. We found the existence of a co-integrating relationship between the variables amidst observed breaks in 1980 and 1992. Thus, considering structural breaks in estimations can not be downplayed as ignoring this may yield biased and inconsistent estimates. Findings revealed a one-way causal linkage between non-oil …

The Professional Turn, Adrienne P. Lamberti Mar 2014

The Professional Turn, Adrienne P. Lamberti

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I’ve spent the past two decades of my professional life immersed in technology, not because I first chose to do so, but rather because doing so was my responsibility. No good scholar and teacher in professional communication—and indeed, no good scholar in rhetoric who also lives in the 21st century—should participate in the luxury of dismissing technology as a central aspect of her work.

Over time this tech-centric approach has informed my professional identity and a larger understanding of my discipline’s mission; meanwhile, as a member of a discipline that (at UNI) is classified as one of the English field’s …

Dig-It-All Tropes, David Grant

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

I am going to basically say everything that Dr. Lamberti said, only in a different key, as it were. I would much rather explore some of these theoretical things but hopefully not over anyone’s head. To start, I will try to give you an understanding of where I’m coming from in terms of looking at the turns here. Any good English major knows a turn is just a trope. So, what are some of the major turns that are going on within digital studies? I think there’s a lot of anxiety. Folks have been saying large-scale pronouncements about a revolution …

New Media Business Models, Where Content And Commerce Collide: Strategies And Ethical Considerations For Success In A New Media World, Aryn Bea Sanderson Mar 2014

New Media Business Models, Where Content And Commerce Collide: Strategies And Ethical Considerations For Success In A New Media World, Aryn Bea Sanderson

Journalism

Media practitioners are finding themselves at a crossroads. Due to increasing digitalization and decreasing funding for so-called traditional outlets, “new media” forms have emerged and, with those, new economic models to generate revenue. New media platforms diverge from old media archetypes in the way they utilize the interaction of content and commerce. The collision of content and commerce is both a novel idea for media sustainability and treacherous water for its credibility. This study analyzes a few key new media economic platforms - sponsored content in a digital-first publication, crowd funding stories and a ranked, e-commerce model - in hopes …

Parenting Styles And Adjustment Outcomes Among College Students, Keisha M. Love, Deneia M. Thomas Mar 2014

Parenting Styles And Adjustment Outcomes Among College Students, Keisha M. Love, Deneia M. Thomas

Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology Faculty Publications

Research has demonstrated that parenting styles partially explain college students’ academic adjustment. However, to account for academic adjustment more fully, additional contributors should be identified and tested. We examined the fit of a hypothesized model consisting of parenting styles, indicators of well-being, and academic adjustment among 315 college students. The model demonstrated a close fit to the data and contained several significant paths.

Emotional Memory: The Effects Of Temporal Pressure On Episodic Memory, Audrey E. Martinez Mar 2014

Emotional Memory: The Effects Of Temporal Pressure On Episodic Memory, Audrey E. Martinez

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Priority Binding theory (MacKay et al., 2004) proposes that under temporal pressure arousing negative stimuli delay binding of neutral items presented in close temporal proximity (as in lists with mixed neutral and negative stimuli). With fast presentation rates, a subsequent negative item may interrupt the binding process for the preceding neutral stimulus. This results in more accurate memory for negative images presented in mixed lists. However, in slow presentation rates, binding occurs equally for all items. Therefor, no such advantage is predicted comparing images presented in lists of the same valence. This study examined the predictions of priority binding theory …

Evaluating And Automating The Annotation Of A Learner Corpus, Alexandr Rosen, Jirka Hana, Barbora Stindlova, Anna Feldman Mar 2014

Evaluating And Automating The Annotation Of A Learner Corpus, Alexandr Rosen, Jirka Hana, Barbora Stindlova, Anna Feldman

Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The paper describes a corpus of texts produced by non-native speakersof Czech. We discuss its annotation scheme, consisting of three interlinked tiers, designed to handle a wide range of error types present in the input. Each tier correctsdifferent types of errors; links between the tiers allow capturing errors in word orderand complex discontinuous expressions. Errors are not only corrected, but alsoclassified. The annotation scheme is tested on a data set including approx. 175,000words with fair inter-annotator agreement results. We also explore the possibility ofapplying automated linguistic annotation tools (taggers, spell checkers and grammarcheckers) to the learner text to support or even …

The Use Of Play In Speech And Occupational Therapy, Jodi Ehrenkranz, Caroline Laferla Mar 2014

The Use Of Play In Speech And Occupational Therapy, Jodi Ehrenkranz, Caroline Laferla

Psychology and Child Development

Sensory Processing Disorder and speech impairment affect millions of children in the United States. Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) affects a child’s development leading to difficulties with “detecting, modulating, interpreting, and/or organizing sensory stimuli” (Miller, Nielsen & Schoen, 2012, p.804). Furthermore, these children may find it difficult to self-regulate their behavior. Speech impairment is typically described as speech sound disorders (SSD), which involves a child having difficulties with communicating or correctly producing their native language (Brumbaugh, Smit, Nippold & Marinellie, 2013). Brumbaugh et al. (2013) also found that these children were likely to develop a poor self-image which provides even more …
