Friends Or Foes?: Examining Social Capital Of International Ngos And Food Security Programs, Mariah Ann Kraner Mar 2014

Friends Or Foes?: Examining Social Capital Of International Ngos And Food Security Programs, Mariah Ann Kraner

Dissertations and Theses

Food insecurity and chronic hunger are devastating global problems currently facing more than a billion people. There are many actors involved in the response to stomp out world hunger, including International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs). These INGOs, however, work in tumultuous environments with limited resources. This dissertation examines the INGOs involved in the food security dilemma (N=51) to investigate how they use resources to reach hungry populations.

It is hypothesized INGOs use a mix of material resources and social capital to enhance their organizational performance. However, little is known about the impact these resources have on reaching communities in need. Social …

Asymmetric Empirical Similarity, Joshua C. Teitelbaum Mar 2014

Asymmetric Empirical Similarity, Joshua C. Teitelbaum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The paper offers a formal model of analogical legal reasoning and takes the model to data. Under the model, the outcome of a new case is a weighted average of the outcomes of prior cases. The weights capture precedential influence and depend on fact similarity (distance in fact space) and precedential authority (position in the judicial hierarchy). The empirical analysis suggests that the model is a plausible model for the time series of U.S. maritime salvage cases. Moreover, the results evince that prior cases decided by inferior courts have less influence than prior cases decided by superior courts.

A Dyadic Analysis Of Couple Attachment Behaviors As Predictors Of Dietary Habits And Physical Activity Levels, Stephanie Young Mar 2014

A Dyadic Analysis Of Couple Attachment Behaviors As Predictors Of Dietary Habits And Physical Activity Levels, Stephanie Young

Theses and Dissertations

While there is substantial evidence that marriage impacts health, no studies have explicitly analyzed the association between attachment behaviors and health practices. This study examines the relationship between couples' attachment behaviors and health practices, as measured by physical activity levels and dietary habits. Couple data was analyzed from the RELATE database (n= 4,957 couples). An Actor Partner Interdependence Model, using a multinomial logistic regression, was used to examine the relationships between attachment behaviors and health practices, as measured by activity level and dietary habits. Results for actor paths indicate that wives' own attachment behaviors significantly influence their own health practices. …

Letters To Grandma: A Comparison Of Generational Perspectives Of Women's Growth As Higher Education Faculty, Elyn Mcreynolds Palmer Mar 2014

Letters To Grandma: A Comparison Of Generational Perspectives Of Women's Growth As Higher Education Faculty, Elyn Mcreynolds Palmer

The Qualitative Report

This ethnographic compilation is the result of a course exercise in qualitative research. A current student of Texas Tech University interviewed an 87-yearold faculty member from the 1950s, comparing her experiences to those of the author in similar, present-day academic environments. The author developed the format of the paper as letters between a young faculty member and her experienced grandmother. Results of the study reflect many similarities between the experiences of past female faculty members and female faculty of today; the exercise does convey, however, many advances for women in the academic culture as well. Finally, the recorded experiences of …

Identifying Ugliness, Defining Beauty: A Focus Group Analysis Of And Reaction To Ugly Betty, Adria Goldman, Damion Waymer Mar 2014

Identifying Ugliness, Defining Beauty: A Focus Group Analysis Of And Reaction To Ugly Betty, Adria Goldman, Damion Waymer

The Qualitative Report

This article discusses the ideological construct “beauty” that permeates our society by focusing specifically on socially constructed ideals of beauty and ugliness as they are represented in media text, specifically, in the TV sitcom Ugly Betty. For this study we conducted focus group interview sessions to explore the influence an alternative representation of beauty and ugliness, as portrayed in the show Ugly Betty, has on college aged females’ definition and interpretation of beauty—typically questions explored using traditional experimental and other quantitative methods. Moreover, this study provides insights into tensions surrounding how beauty and ugliness are defined and the implications of …

Conversation Analysis And Gender: Establishing And Challenging The Relevance Of Gender In Ca Research, Stephanie Anne Shelton Mar 2014

Conversation Analysis And Gender: Establishing And Challenging The Relevance Of Gender In Ca Research, Stephanie Anne Shelton

The Qualitative Report

In this book review, I addressed the ways that qualitative researchers have examined the links between Conversation Analysis (CA), which often is criticized as a method without context or theory, and the issue of gender. I consider the ways that the editors adopt the controversial position that CA is a politically laden method and that authors extend and challenge existing CA research. I point out the ways that this book both inconsistently connects its chapters and establishes its intended audience, while clearly offering a balanced examination of the ways that gender-in-talk is often relevant but not omnipresent in conversations.

Engaging Academics And Reimagining Scholarly Communication For The Public Good: A Report, Jessie Daniels, Polly Thistlethwaite Mar 2014

Engaging Academics And Reimagining Scholarly Communication For The Public Good: A Report, Jessie Daniels, Polly Thistlethwaite

Publications and Research

JustPublics@365 began as a discussion about how an interdisciplinary group of scholars at the Graduate Center, CUNY (located at 365 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan) might be able to bring their work together to foster greater social justice by sharing it in the public sphere.

We live in an era in which inequality is rampant. Media reports on inequality often gain little traction in a 24-hour news cycle dominated by the trivial. Activists work to address inequality in a myriad of ways, online and on the ground, but often lack connections to research or media that could further their cause. Key …

What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Brevity?, Robin Bergart Mar 2014

What Do We Talk About When We Talk About Brevity?, Robin Bergart

Modern Languages and Literatures Annual Graduate Conference

What does “brevity” evoke in today’s academic library? In this paper, I explore the notion of brevity with my colleagues at the University of Guelph Library, asking them what the term evokes for them in the library and higher education more broadly.

This paper reveals a clash of values and ideologies which may well point to one of the more universal tensions within higher education today.

La Temporalidad De Lo Breve, Vanina Noejovich Mar 2014

La Temporalidad De Lo Breve, Vanina Noejovich

Modern Languages and Literatures Annual Graduate Conference

P-06 The Diversity Of Color: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Color Symbolism, Erica Bradfield Mar 2014

P-06 The Diversity Of Color: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Color Symbolism, Erica Bradfield

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Does a person’s perception of color symbolism depend on their cultural geographic origin? As color is often connected to different cultural elements, this study is intended as a contribution to advancing cross-cultural understanding in a globalizing world. The hypothesis states that the color perceived to be symbolic of various life events such as weddings, births, and deaths or emotions such as happiness and sadness, will vary based on a person’s cultural geographic origin. Using eleven basic color terms, as determined by Berlin and Kay (1969), subjects’ perceptions of color symbolism will be explored through responses to an online survey shared …

P-04 Processing Load And Biopotentials: An Evaluation Of A Consumer Electroencephalogram (Eeg), Kristen Bishop Mar 2014

P-04 Processing Load And Biopotentials: An Evaluation Of A Consumer Electroencephalogram (Eeg), Kristen Bishop

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

The general public is extremely interested in mental training and the use of brain imaging to study the mind. One device that combines the two and is currently on the market for consumers is a single channel EEG band produced by NeuroSky which claims to measure concentration. However, the claims that they have developed a single channel measure of concentration and meditation have not been tested. EEG power is related to cognitive memory and performance, which both contribute to concentration. In addition to EEG waves, pupil size is a reliable physiological index of processing load and concentration. The first purpose …

P-05 Visual Cognition While Listening To Stories, Nathalie Borges Mar 2014

P-05 Visual Cognition While Listening To Stories, Nathalie Borges

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Different people have different perceptual patterns in response to language. Different language accents may influence one’s visual cognition by referencing to certain objects when listening to stories. The purpose of this study is to record differences in eye movement patterns while listening to stories by manipulating the auditory stimulus and cognitive load. Using the eye tracker, eye movement patterns will be recorded as subjects look at objects on a screen. I posit that subjects will delay eye movement patterns to target objects while listening to stories in a foreign accent as opposed to an American accent because of increased cognitive …

P-07 The Role Of Sabbath Keeping Internalization, Need Satisfaction, And Parental Environment In Well-Being, Paola Caceres Mar 2014

P-07 The Role Of Sabbath Keeping Internalization, Need Satisfaction, And Parental Environment In Well-Being, Paola Caceres

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

Identifying which specific religious practices promote religious internalization is crucial in understanding the relationship between religious practice and well-being. The current study seeks to use an episodic memory recall technique along with surveys to examine whether the relationship between internalization of Sabbath-keeping and well-being is mediated by basic need satisfaction (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and parental environment. The relationships between Sabbath-keeping narratives, well-being, Sabbath-keeping internalization, need satisfaction, and perception of parental environment among life-long Adventists are also examined. I will discuss internalization of religion using the Self-Determination Theory-based models of Sabbath keeping proposed by Diddams, Surdyk, & Daniels (2004).

P-13 The Relationship Between Student Motivation, Resilience, And Parental Environment, Eliana Iller Mar 2014

P-13 The Relationship Between Student Motivation, Resilience, And Parental Environment, Eliana Iller

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

The goal of this research is to better understand how student motivation and resilience are related to parental environment, distinguishing between parental involvement and parental conflict. Student motivation was measured based on the reasons that students endorse for why they are studying. I predict that parental involvement will be positively related to motivation and resilience and that parental conflict will be negatively related to motivation and resilience. I will also be examining the interactions between parental and child genders and environment, motivation, and resilience. I will discuss the correlations among these variables and their implications.
