A Media Literacy Education Approach To Teaching Adolescents Comprehensive Sexual Health Education, Tracy Marie Scull, Christina V. Malik, Janis Beth Kupersmidt Mar 2014

A Media Literacy Education Approach To Teaching Adolescents Comprehensive Sexual Health Education, Tracy Marie Scull, Christina V. Malik, Janis Beth Kupersmidt

Journal of Media Literacy Education

As states are moving toward comprehensive sexual health education, educators require engaging and effective curricula. This pre-post study (N=64) examined the feasibility of a comprehensive, media literacy education program for influencing adolescents’ sexual health and media literacy outcomes. After the program, participants were more likely to have the intention to use condoms during sex and talk to partners, parents, or medical professionals prior to sex. Media literacy outcomes included decreased perceived realism of and increased skepticism of media messages and improved media deconstruction skills. Overall, the results suggest that media literacy has the potential for positively influencing sexual health decisions.

Going Places: Slovenian Women's Stories On Migration, Mirjam Milharcic Hkadnik, Jernej Mlekuž

University of Akron Press Publications

Going Places is a narrative of a century of Slovenian women's immigration stories. The book traces the migration of these Central European women to several destinations including Argentina, Egypt, Italy, and the United States. The research has been carefully culled from the subjects' letters, personal diaries, and oral interviews. What results is a story that covers the span of three to four generations.

The book highlights in biography the story of identity under construction. Each woman's identity surpasses ethnic, national identity or belonging, but at the same time, contains different elements of identity transformation at different stages of the narrator's …

Close Spaces: Original Research On Attachment In Thai Orphans, Jenessa Halliday, Dr. Charles Nuckolls Mar 2014

Close Spaces: Original Research On Attachment In Thai Orphans, Jenessa Halliday, Dr. Charles Nuckolls

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This report evaluates attachment among twenty orphaned toddlers living in the Viengping Orphanage in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The report measures the attachment of the orphans towards their daily caregivers, using an adapted version of the Waters attachment q-set (AQS). Due to a correlation between orphans and insecure attachment, this report expected to find low levels of attachment between the children and their caregivers. Analysis of scores from the q-set test indicated that eleven of the twenty children experience insecure attachment.

Stream Turbidity: A Variable To Co-Habitation Of Fish Predators And Prey?, Nicholas Davis, Dr. Ryan Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Global bio-diversity is being threatened by many different factors. Most of this is man induced. One of these factors is the introduction of non-native organisms to new locations. One hypothesis that explains why some non-native invasive organisms are so successful is that the native organisms have not evolved strategies to effectively interact with the new organism’s strategy (e.g. competition, predation impacts). Essentially, they are unprepared to defend themselves or deal with the novel threat.

The world needs solutions to complex social problems and corporations can contribute, but can “ethical” branding increase profit by increasing purchases of “ethical” products?

Ephemeral Work Group Formation Of Jenu Kuruba Honey Collectors And Late 19th Century Coloado Silver Prospectors, Kathryn Demps, Susan M. Glover Klemetti Mar 2014

Ephemeral Work Group Formation Of Jenu Kuruba Honey Collectors And Late 19th Century Coloado Silver Prospectors, Kathryn Demps, Susan M. Glover Klemetti

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Humans frequently form short-lived cooperative groups to accomplish subsistence and economic tasks. We explore the ecological and cultural factors behind ephemeral work-group formation in two disparate cultural contexts: groups foraging for wild honey in present day South India and groups prospecting for silver ore in the Elk Mountain Mining District of Colorado in the late 19th century. Contrary to traditional economic foraging predictions, we find little evidence that per capita yields are the most important factor in determining size and composition of ephemeral work groups. We explore factors in each of these cultures that may be of importance for group …

Research Brief: "Coming Home: Attitudes Toward U.S. Veterans Returning From Iraq", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study focuses on men in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and their experiences in service and reintegrating after combat. It also explores whether there is a stigma against these men made by the general public. The authors determined that in general, while the stereotypes of military personnel might be negative, the overall views of service were positive. Future research should address this paradox, as well as determine if there are factors of race and gender involved.

Efficacy Of A Self-Forgiveness Workbook: A Randomized Controlled Trial With University Students, Brandon J. Griffin Mar 2014

Efficacy Of A Self-Forgiveness Workbook: A Randomized Controlled Trial With University Students, Brandon J. Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

Insofar as forgiveness of oneself enables one to responsibly manage the consequences of wrongdoing, the practice of self-forgiveness may be essential to the preservation of one’s physical, psychological, relational, and spiritual health. In the present thesis, an intervention wait-list design was employed to investigate the efficacy of a 6-hour self-directed workbook designed to promote self-forgiveness. University students (N = 204) who reported perpetrating an interpersonal offense and who experienced some sense of remorse were randomly assigned to either an immediate treatment or wait-list control condition, and assessments were administered on three occasions. Participants’ self-forgiveness ratings increased in conjunction with completion …

Recreational Segregation: The Role Of Place In Shaping Communities, Iyshia Michelle Lowman Mar 2014

Recreational Segregation: The Role Of Place In Shaping Communities, Iyshia Michelle Lowman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Institutionalized racial segregation in the United States has had a significant impact on many aspects of American culture. Segregation was practiced in every aspect of public life, even in areas of recreation. For those labeled as "nonwhite," even going to the beach was legally restricted. The events between the 1950s and 1960s at Homestead Bayfront Beach in Homestead, Florida are evidence that social stratification based on the social categorization of race has a significant effect even today. This research examines how legalized segregation in the past impacted society and contributed to the development of a place and identity at Homestead …

Obesity And Dining Out: An Exploration Of Dietary Trends In Urban Malaysia, Sylvia S. Lim Mar 2014

Obesity And Dining Out: An Exploration Of Dietary Trends In Urban Malaysia, Sylvia S. Lim

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Economic growth has spurred rapid urbanization in Malaysia and triggered changes in diet, lifestyle, and disease trends. National studies show that a third of Malaysia's population is overweight/obese while household expenditures on dining out grow. In metropolitan Kuala Lumpur (KL), residents navigate concepts of nutrition, body weight, and health as they dine out. Using the biocultural framework, this study examined links between body weight, diet, income, street food consumption, and nutritional knowledge through the perspectives of consumers and vendors. Altogether, 77 participants were recruited for this three-phase research. In the first phase, a survey was administered to 60 participants recruited …

The Role Of Network Position For Peer Influences On Adolescents' Academic Engagement, Price Mccloud Johnson Mar 2014

The Role Of Network Position For Peer Influences On Adolescents' Academic Engagement, Price Mccloud Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Academic engagement has been found to significantly predict students' future achievement. Among adolescents, the peer context becomes an increasingly important point of socialization and influence on beliefs and behavior, including academic engagement. Previous research suggests that those peers with whom an adolescent spends much of their time significantly predict change in engagement over time (Kindermann, 2007). Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory (Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 1998) postulates that exosystem effects (those influencing factors that are not directly connected to individuals) play an important role in development, and social network theorists have suggested that the position one occupies within the greater network is …

Optimal Allocation Of Resources In Airport Security: Profiling Vs. Screening, Aniruddha Bagchi, Jomon Paul Mar 2014

Optimal Allocation Of Resources In Airport Security: Profiling Vs. Screening, Aniruddha Bagchi, Jomon Paul

Faculty Articles

This model examines the role of intelligence gathering and screening in providing airport security. We analyze this problem using a game between the government and a terrorist. By investing in intelligence gathering, the government can improve the precision of its information. In contrast, screening can be used to search a passenger and thereby deter terrorist attacks. We determine the optimal allocation of resources between these two strategies wherein we model the role of intelligence using the concept of supermodular precision. One striking result is that under certain circumstances, an increase in the investment in intelligence can induce a more devious …

Development Of A Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (Rt-Pcr) Assay For Plant Species, Kayla Curtis, Heather Miller Coyle

Forensic Science Publications

In order to facilitate optimal plant DNA quantitation and identification, an assay has been developed that uses generic plant PCR primers that amplify a region in the chloroplast genome of plant samples. The assay uses the SYBR green detection dye to detect the PCR product with a universal PCR primer set to the large subunit of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase, rbcL, but can be used with any of the universal barcode primers for land plants (rbcL, matK, trnH, psbA). Standard dilutions of control wheat DNA of varying concentrations were tested to create a standard curve. Several plant DNA extractions of different …

Blogging the Library

I have embarked on another researching journey; this time focusing on “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band. Ever since I got to see them perform at a neighboring high school my freshmen year, I been fascinated and inspired by the level of excellence and precision that the Marine Band displays. One day I hope to join their ranks as part of the euphonium section, but I still have a lot of work and practicing to do before I can achieve this goal. [excerpt]
