The Art Of Vaisnava Vegetarian Cooking: The Manifestation Of Cultural Identity Through The Culinary Craft, Selena Greising Apr 2014

The Art Of Vaisnava Vegetarian Cooking: The Manifestation Of Cultural Identity Through The Culinary Craft, Selena Greising

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Food and religion are both defining characteristics of a culture, serving as a unique language of communication. The Vaisnava Hindu tradition holds very specific guidelines for food in relation to the religious lifestyle. The inclusions and exclusions, cooking techniques, history, and the manifestation of anciently rooted traditions in the modern world reveal a great deal about the people within the culture. Vaisnavas do not consume meat, fish, garlic, onion, carrot or mushroom, but still maintain the Indian tradition of food bursting with flavor. Beyond the strict culinary aspects of the culture, the religious beliefs exhibit a strong influence upon the …

Organic Agriculture In Bhutan: Barriers Going To 100%, Mark Mccrae-Hokenson Apr 2014

Organic Agriculture In Bhutan: Barriers Going To 100%, Mark Mccrae-Hokenson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study seeks to provide an overview of organic agriculture in Bhutan. In an effort to promote sustainability and achieve the goals set by a Gross National Happiness inspired government, Bhutan has pledged to go 100% organic by 2020. This pledge is at odds with the country’s goal to increase self sufficiency and food security. I look at the barriers to going organic, the programs and initiatives in place to overcome or mitigate those barriers, and the path of least resistance in the future. I asked farmers, scholars, researchers, and members of the government for their opinions on the prospects …

Modern Portraits Of Childbirth In Exile In Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala: A Melding Of Tradition And Innovation, Luna Adler Apr 2014

Modern Portraits Of Childbirth In Exile In Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala: A Melding Of Tradition And Innovation, Luna Adler

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The exiled Tibetans of McLeod Ganj, Dharamsala, India1 are caught between two worlds; forced to live outside of their native land, some cling to Tibetan tradition while others embrace their new environment and its protocol. Because their 1959 exile was relatively recent, the Tibetans I spoke with during my four weeks of research for this paper were nearly split: many of my interviewees were born in their homeland while a number of others were born into exile. This juxtaposition made for a wide range of perspectives and answers to my queries, as well as heightened insight into the ways that …

La Coexistencia De Dos Agriculturas En Argentina Una Mirada A La Vida De Una Granja Familiar: ¿Cómo Sobrevivir Al Lado De Las Grandes Empresas?, Camille Sanchez De La Vega

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Energizing Europe: The Geopolitics Of Energy Security And Energy Diversification In The European Union, Gabriel Alfredo Uribe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Europe has always had an interesting relationship with Russia, be it social, political, or economic. From the days of the Cold War, when there was the ideological battle of communism versus capitalism, with the alliance of NATO representing a front against the Iron Curtain, certain remnants of this dynamic have still survived. Russia has not always had the best of relations with the European Union (EU), which has not made it easy for the EU to have fully functioning foreign relations with them. This is problematic specifically because of the importance that Russia has on EU energy security, as it …

Externalities Of The Transatlantic Trade And Investment Partnership: Effects On Emerging Economies And The Developing World, Eric Stroiman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The process of globalization and the liberalization of the global trade regime has become an integral part of the modern political and economic landscape. The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) currently being negotiated between the United States and the European Union has the potential to be the most impactful free trade agreement of the 21st century as these blocks represent the two largest economies in the world. This paper analyzes the conceivable effects of this agreement on the uninvolved emerging economies and developing countries of the world. The two main theories on the outcome heavily involve the fate …

Rhetoric Or Results?: Tourism, The Aquarium, And The People Of Fortaleza, Molly Silvia

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

When one thinks of tourism, he or she conjures images of travel, exotic locations, and spending money. Yet rarely do people stop and think about where exactly their money is going. Nowadays, tourism is a booming industry that many countries believe contributes significantly to their GDP. But while tourism may contribute significantly to a country’s economy, it may not provide the people of that nation with any substantial improvements in their quality of life. This monograph questions why Brazil has chosen to invest its GDP in the tourism industry, while the nation has 21.4% of its population in poverty (The …

Parte De Nosotros: La Tierra, El Estado, Y La Identidad Avá Guaraní Dentro Del Modelo De Desarrollo Paraguayo, Shayna Orens

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Paraguay, a small and often overlooked landlocked country in South America has seen rapid economic growth in recent years. This growth, which can be attributed to the country’s agro-‐ export model, has been highly unequal, concentrating both land and economic power in the hands of the few. Centered around the production and export of genetically modified crops like soy and corn, the model is one that requires vast amounts of land and has implied rapid deforestation and changes in land use and land cover, especially in Eastern Paraguay. Representing close to two percent of the population, the indigenous people of …

(Wp 2014-02) Trade Volatility And The Gatt/Wto: Does Membership Make A Difference?, Abdur Chowdhury, Xuepeng Liu, Miao Wang, M. C. Sunny Wong

Economics Working Papers

Using bilateral trade data for 210 countries over the period 1948-2003, this paper attempts to shed some light on the relationship between WTO and members’ trade volatilities. We show that the trade among WTO members tends to be more stable than the trade outside the WTO, and there is strong evidence of interdependence of trade volatilities. The results show comovement of trade volatilities across all dyads in general, and much stronger comovement among WTO members than between WTO and non-WTO members. Such strong comovement implies that WTO member countries not only share the benefits of having an interdependent and more …

Availability Of Sexualized Clothing Among Diverse Stores And Its Possible Effect On Self-Objectification, Melisa Estrada

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

The clothes people choose to wear can be the first thing that other people notice. Today, young girls can become susceptible to the images presented by the media, which may lead to self-objectification and the desire to use clothing to appeal to society's standards. The purpose of this study was to expand a previous research study conducted to evaluate the extent to which sexualizing clothing is available for young girls. This study focused on fall clothing and was later expanded to spring clothing, as opposed to summer clothing as was evaluated previously. A sample of 435 tops available for girls …

Marriage As A Spiritual Discipline: Principles And Benefits, Richmond Laney Apr 2014

Marriage As A Spiritual Discipline: Principles And Benefits, Richmond Laney

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Christians use spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and journaling as methods to enhance their relationship with God. However, Christian rates of divorce are not different than the United States average where more than one in three first marriages ends in divorce. This is despite a Christian belief that marriage is a special relationship. The rate of divorce among Christians should be reduced. Marriage can be practiced as a spiritual discipline that will benefit the relationship as well as yielding sought after spirituality. Marriage as a spiritual discipline would help couples increase marital satisfaction, thus driving down the divorce rate. …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative, transcendental, phenomenological study was to describe school psychologists' experiences with teacher-to-student mistreatment in the Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 educational setting. There are few United States studies presented in the literature on the topic of teacher-to-student mistreatment and its significant negative impact on students from either the teacher or student viewpoint, but no research has been conducted on this issue from the school psychologist's perspective. The central research question addressed by the study was this: What are school psychologists' experiences with teacher-to-student mistreatment? Members of the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists (VASP) and Virginia school psychologists, …

Forecasting Short-Term Stock Returns Using Irregular Pricing Behavior In The Options Market, Thomas W. Sampson Apr 2014

Forecasting Short-Term Stock Returns Using Irregular Pricing Behavior In The Options Market, Thomas W. Sampson

Master's Theses

This paper uses regression analysis to examine the relationship between today's implied volatility on AMD stock options with tomorrow's return on the underlying. An economic analyis of the options markets' micro-structure is discussed to establish the intuition and the basis behind the relationship. Four seperate models are developed to examine its statistical significance and the ability of options' prices to accurately forecast returns on the underlying security.

The hypothesis of the paper is that daily changes in implied volatility can be used to earn higher than expected returns on the underlying stock. I find that implied volatility can be used …

Prison Research From The Inside: The Role Of Convict Autoethnography, Greg Newbold, Jeffrey Ian Ross, Richard S. Jones, Stephen C. Richards, Michael Lenza

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

A perspective that has often been absent in criminal justice research is that of former prisoners. This article discusses the establishment, in 1997, of “convict criminology,” a group of scholars producing research informed by their experiences of crime and the criminal justice process; that is, either those who have served time themselves or who have operated alongside prisoners as professionals in custodial settings. It is argued that such scholars face similar dilemmas to others in terms of emotionalism, but suggests that their emotions are of a different nature. While an “insider” perspective cannot lay claim to scientific “objectivity,” the article …

The “Chicago Way”: Inner-City Street Gangs And The Battle For Civil Rights In The Windy City, 1966- 1970, Benjamin Ray Linzy

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

The Civil Rights Movement unfolded uniquely in Chicago; in the North Lawndale and Woodlawn neighborhoods two street gangs, the Conservative Vice Lords (CVL) and the Almighty Black P Stone Nation (BPSN ) assumed the role of community organizations. They used their neighborhood connections and street savvy to alleviate racial pressures oppressing Chicago’s urban African American youths: high dropout rates, poor job opportunities, and the stress of dealing with increasingly unstable and declining communities. While the gangs’ established hierarchies led to rapid formation of community organizations, their efforts fell apart over a brief four-year period due to an inability to divest …

Dating Violence On The College Campus: Exploring Student Perception And Awareness, Patrice Gibson

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Dating violence is a crime that plagues college students all over the world. Many students are unaware of what specifically constitutes dating violence and what resources are available to those who are affected by this crime. Colleges and universities tend to have vague or nonexistent rules and regulations regarding dating violence; there is also a lack of education provided to first-year students about dating violence and resources available to them. The present study explored student perception of dating violence and focused on students from small, liberal arts colleges in the central and southwest part of Virginia. Furthermore, this study built …

A Normative Theory Of The Information Society, Kim M. Thompson

Faculty Publications

Alistair S. Duff has been writing interesting works about social conceptualizations of the information society since the mid-1990s. His earlier works have examined the origins of the information society paradigm, surveyed the pre-2001 research literature related to the information society, and discussed connections between the information society and social engineering, and in 2004 he explored the need for normative analysis in information policy. One can easily trace Duff’s progress toward the presently reviewed book;the aforementioned themes of the history of the information society, social engineering, and the normative attributes of information policy are the scaffolding used to support the Rawls-Tawney approach …
