Conducting A Literature Review, Jim Alderman

Beginning Library & Information Systems Strategies

The literature review is an integral part of any research project and is undertaken as a means of surveying what research has been conducted previously on a particular topic. There are many reasons for conducting a literature review, but one of the primary reasons is to establish a base line of what is already known on a topic before exploring the topic any further. The review typically involves a search of any previously published or presented materials that might have relevance to a prospective new study.

Scholarly or academic journals are essential resources for doing academic research. While popular magazines like Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News & World Report are excellent sources of information on nearly any topic, they are written with the average reader in mind and do not include the depth of coverage that an academic researcher would need. For in‐depth examination of a topic, academic, scholarly publications should be the researcher's first choice.

Participatory Action Research: Improving Professional Practices And Local Situations, Mary M. Somerville

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Participatory Action Research employs social sciences research methods to develop actionable local knowledge. In seeking meaningful and inclusive ways of generating knowledge together in the workplace, Participatory Action Research practitioner–researchers combine action and reflection with theory and practice to improve local situations and enhance professional practices. Working with and for others, co-researchers evolve learning cycles that are practical and emergent, participatory and collaborative, emancipatory and democratic, and interpretive and local. Towards Proactive And Flexible Agent-Based Generation Of Policy Packages For Active Transportation, Araz Taeihagh, Rene Bañares-Alcántara

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

One of the approaches gaining ground in policy design is the implementation of combinations of policy measures as policy packages with the aim of increasing efficiency and effectiveness of the designed policies. In this paper, we describe the recent advancements in the developments of a virtual environment for the exploration and analysis of policy packages. The virtual environment uses an agent-based modelling approach for the generation of different configurations of policy measures in the policy packages. The benefit of using the approach is the proactive and flexible generation of policy packages as the agents can react to the changes that …

Institute of Museum and Library Services, Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program Grant, continuing education, 2014-2016.
Academic and research librarians and their institutions derive well-established benefits from librarians conducting research: progress toward gaining promotion, tenure, and higher salaries; advancement in the profession and recognition; receptivity to change; increased skill in managing complex library operations through systematic study; and better service to and empathy with faculty researchers. We know, however, that these librarians may not be well positioned to conduct research, resulting from any number of barriers. We aim to remove some of the noted barriers (reported lack of time to …
