Learning To Work With Clients : A Quantitative Study On Educational Pathways For Social Workers Working With Psychotropic Medication, Katherine S. Preston

The current study explored how clinical social workers working with patients who are prescribed psychotropic medication went about developing the knowledge and skills to work with the population. The study identified training activities that contribute to the development of practice skills, and examined the relationship between these activities and self-rated practice competency levels. A snowball sample of 28 clinical social workers whose scope of practice included collaborating on the care of patients who are prescribed psychotropic medications were recruited. This exploratory study was undertaken to determine the extent to which LGBT social workers experience homophobia and transphobia during the course of their Master's education. Secondly, this study examined the cumulative impact that homophobia and transphobia have on the professional development of LGBT social workers during their graduate education. Using semi-structured interviews with LGBT Master's level social work students, as well as graduates of Master's of Social Work programs, the study found that all 12 participants experienced oppression in the form of homophobia and/or transphobia at some point during their education. The literature confirms the importance of providing cross-cultural education and the development of cross-cultural skills for trainees entering clinical practice. In recognition of this, Smith College School for Social Work has a written commitment to anti-racism and as part of this commitment the college has developed a curriculum that addresses race and racism in clinical practice and the social work profession. This exploratory, qualitative study of social worker/coach practitioners elucidates themes about what motivates social workers to become coaches, how they integrate these roles in practice, and how this integration impacts their social work identity, adherence to professional ethics, and the types of clients they serve. The sample of 14 participants was recruited through professional listserves, social media, and a snowball technique. Key findings include that participants who integrated the role of coaching into their practices were able to connect more closely to a strengths-based and client-centered approach, feel more authentic and empowered, and make use of training in both disciplines …

This quantitative study explores Smith College School for Social Work (SCSSW) Master of Social Work (MSW) alumni perceptions of the SCSSW curriculum in the area of agingrelated practice, and the contribution of their educational experience to their preparedness, motivation, and decision to work with older adults. SCSSW MSW alumni from the years 2007 to 2011 (N = 77) comprised the study sample. The 50-item online survey, including two openended questions, was emailed to participants based on contact information they had provided to the alumni office of the School. This study was undertaken to determine what training trauma-focused clinicians are receiving at the graduate or professional level to prevent burnout, secondary traumatic stress, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma, as well as what individual, agency, and institutionallevel interventions clinicians find effective in preventing or ameliorating these phenomena and promoting compassion satisfaction. Thirteen trauma-focused clinicians with a broad diversity of clinical, professional, and educational backgrounds participated in a semi-structured interview which sought more information about individual self-care practices and clinicians' assessment of information and training received at the graduate and professional level related to vicarious trauma. The purpose of this study was to explore how nonreligious social workers respond to religious terminally ill cancer patients within healthcare settings. There is limited research focused on the experience of the nonreligious social worker. Thus, a qualitative, exploratory study was chosen as an appropriate research design. This qualitative study used a flexible interview format comprised of semi-structured open- and closed-ended questions presented to 5 nonreligious oncology social workers in the United States. The findings demonstrate that most or all of the oncology social workers had similar experiences: with a supervisor or work agency addressing how to work with patients …
