Kino: A Generic Document Management System For Biologists Using Sa-Rest And Faceted Search, Ajith Harshana Ranabahu, Priti Parikh, Maryam Panahiazar, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Document management has become an important consideration for the scientific community over the last decade. Human knowledge is central to many scientific domains, thus it is not possible to completely automate the document management process. Managing scientific documents require a semi-automatic approach to overcome issues of large volume, yet support the human participation in the process. In this paper we present Kino, a set of tools that streamline the document management process in life science domains. Kino is integrated with National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO), providing scientists access to quality domain models. Annotated documents are indexed using a faceted …

Book Review: Knocking On Heaven's Door, Scott D. Peterson

Communication Faculty Publications

Since the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, baseball has had more than its share of apologists to proclaim the game's virtues and unique qualities-how the game lends itself to narrative, how it's a meritocracy that rewards hard work and perseverance, or how it acts as a conduit to the American Dream. What baseball literature needs in he present day and age is more writers to tell the whole story-and Marty Dobrow's Knocking on Heaven's Door does just that.

Central Ohio: Industry Driver And Occupational Highlights, Ohio Board Of Regents, Wright State University, Center For Urban And Public Affairs

Economic Development

Taking two factors into account—size and concentration of industry—Central Ohio’s dominant industries include the Health Industries, the Business & Financial Services Industries, the Information Technology and Telecommunications Industries, and the Transportation and Logistics industries. Not having substantial employment in the manufacturing industries differentiates Central Ohio’s economy from other major regions of the State. Of about 1.4 million workers in Central Ohio, only 82,000 or 6% are production workers.

Publicly Vs. Privately Controlled Higher Education Costs: Panel Data Estimates, G. Thomas Sav Aug 2011

Publicly Vs. Privately Controlled Higher Education Costs: Panel Data Estimates, G. Thomas Sav

Economics Faculty Publications

More so now than ever, budgetary problems and widespread reforms are generating questions regarding higher education costs among publicly controlled compared to privately controlled colleges and universities. Past studies have offered scale and scope estimates anchored in 1995 and earlier cross sectional data that could contain omitted variable biased. In contrast, this paper employs panel data spanning the 2005 through 2009 years to estimate a multiproduct cost function and scale and scope economies separately for public and private sector colleges and universities. The two-way fixed effects results indicate the presence of significant institutional and time effects. Overall, the findings suggest …

Citizen Sensing: Opportunities And Challenges In Mining Social Signals And Perceptions, Amit P. Sheth Jul 2011

Citizen Sensing: Opportunities And Challenges In Mining Social Signals And Perceptions, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Millions of persons have become 'citizens' of an Internet- or Web-enabled social community. Web 2.0 fostered the open environment and applications for tagging, blogging, wikis, and social networking sites that have made information consumption, production, and sharing so incredibly easy. An interconnected network of people who actively observe, report, collect, analyze, and disseminate information via text, audio, or video messages, increasingly through pervasively connected mobile devices, has led to what we term citizen sensing. In this talk, we review recent progress in supporting collective intelligence through intelligent processing of citizen sensing. Key issues we cover in this talk are: - …

The Impact Of Incarceration On Families: A Summary Of The Literature, Kolina J. Delgado Jul 2011

The Impact Of Incarceration On Families: A Summary Of The Literature, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

Since the mid-1970s, the United States (U.S.) has seen a continuous rise in the rates of incarceration. Prior to the 1970s, the rate of incarceration had remained relatively steady at an average of 110 inmates per 100,000 residents for over half a century (Tonry, 2001). Between 1980 and 2000, the U.S. incarceration rates have increased by a minimum of 35,000 each year, with the average year bringing in between 55,000 and 75,000 new inmates (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2003). Contrasting the U.S. rates with those of other countries clearly demonstrates that the U.S. is a major outlier among its peers …

Psychosis: Can Mindfulness Help?, Kolina J. Delgado Jul 2011

Psychosis: Can Mindfulness Help?, Kolina J. Delgado

Psychology Student Publications

Mindfulness originated out of Buddhism, but in recent years it has been utilized as a psychological intervention outside the context of Buddhism. Mindfulness is defined as paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally (Kabat-Zinn, 1994, p. 4). Mindfulness is based on the assertion that distress occurs not as a direct consequence of experience, but instead is caused by an individual's response to such experiences (Abba, Chadwick, & Stevenson, 2008). Therefore, mindfulness serves to alleviate distress by helping people learn to react to their experiences in a different way. That is, it helps people …

Local Closed World Semantics: Keep It Simple, Stupid!, Adila Krishnadhi, Kunal Sengupta, Pascal Hitzler Jul 2011

Local Closed World Semantics: Keep It Simple, Stupid!, Adila Krishnadhi, Kunal Sengupta, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

A combination of open and closed-world reasoning (usually called local closed world reasoning) is a desirable capability of knowledge representation formalisms for Semantic Web applications. However, none of the proposals made to date for extending description logics with local closed world capabilities has had any significant impact on applications. We believe that one of the key reasons for this is that current proposals fail to provide approaches which are intuitively accessible for application developers at the same time are applicable, as extensions, to expressive description logics as SROIQ, which underlies the Web Ontology Language OWL.

In this paper, we propose …

Improving Library Services With E-Books, Sue Polanka Jul 2011

Improving Library Services With E-Books, Sue Polanka

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Last month, during a family trip to Yellowstone National Park, my 9-year-old son asked how high the water from Old Faithful was spraying and why it was so hot and steamy. Armed with my smartphone and the Concise Encyclopedia Britannica application , I was able to touch, search, and tell: 160 feet high, and proximity to magma.

Did I need an e-book app on a mobile device to answer these questions for him? Probably not. A signpost or park ranger could have informed me, but the beauty of my solution was that I easily found the information at an altitude …

Web Wisdom: An Essay On How Web 2.0 And Semantic Web Can Foster A Global Knowledge Society, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth Jul 2011

Web Wisdom: An Essay On How Web 2.0 And Semantic Web Can Foster A Global Knowledge Society, Christopher Thomas, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Admittedly this is a presumptuous title that should never be used when reporting on individual research advances. Wisdom is just not a scientific concept. In this case, though, we are reporting on recent developments on the web that lead us to believe that the web is on the way to providing a platform for not only information acquisition and business transactions but also for large scale knowledge development and decision support. It is likely that by now every web user has participated in some sort of social function or knowledge accumulating function on the web, many times without even being …

Aerospace And Aviation Workforce Strategy, Kristy Rochon, Wright State University Center For Urban And Public Affairs Jun 2011

Aerospace And Aviation Workforce Strategy, Kristy Rochon, Wright State University Center For Urban And Public Affairs

Economic Development

Despite the struggling economy and the challenges that have plagued the commercial aviation market, the national Aerospace and Aviation industry has experienced growth from 2005 to 2009. U.S. Aerospace sales increased by 21 percent and profits increased by 29 percent. However, at the same time, aircraft production lines have contracted as a result of decreased defense spending over the past 15 years. This contraction has limited production surge capacity, an event that is looming as a result of aging aircraft in both the commercial and defense fleets. There is a window of opportunity for the State of Ohio to emerge …

Book Review: Major League Bride, Scott D. Peterson Jun 2011

Book Review: Major League Bride, Scott D. Peterson

Communication Faculty Publications

As the title indicates, Lockwood's memoir sets out to relate the big league experience from the uncommon perspective of a baseball player's wife. Fans of a certain age might recognize her husband, Skip Lockwood, a starter turned closer who achieved some fame with the New York Mets in the mid-1970s—and who shared a 1965 rookie card with Blue Moon Odom and Catfish Hunter. More than just a memoir, Lockwood's book provides a cultural history because her and her husband's time in baseball was bracketed by the strikes of 1972 and 1981—an important period in the labor relations of Major League …
