Shared Understanding Of End-Users' Requirements In E-Science Projects, Peter Darch, Annamaria Carusi, Marina Jirotka
Shared Understanding Of End-Users' Requirements In E-Science Projects, Peter Darch, Annamaria Carusi, Marina Jirotka
Peter Darch
The acquisition by developers of e-science applications of a thorough understanding of the requirements of end-users has been recognized as playing a critical role in the usability of such applications. However, there is another dimension to such an understanding that also plays an important role, namely the extent to which these developers converge on a shared understanding of these requirements. This paper considers why such a shared understanding is important, and highlights possible obstacles to this that may arise in the context of e-science projects. A research project, consisting of qualitative case studies of two projects, is being undertaken, with …
"Being Literate About Something": Discipline-Based Information Literacy In Higher Education, Jill Anderson
"Being Literate About Something": Discipline-Based Information Literacy In Higher Education, Jill Anderson
Jill E. Anderson
This report examines how academic librarians and theorists have discussed the issue of discipline-based information literacy instructional approaches since the publication of the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education in 2000. As Kate Manuel has recently noted, the Standards balance outcomes and indicators of universal or general information-literacy skills with more discipline-specific skills. Prior to the publication of the ACRL Standards, Stephen Plum argued that disciplinary standards can provide valuable frameworks for library instruction; more recent theorists have focused attention on general skills, some arguing that discipline-based skills are the province of subject faculty, others suggesting that discipline-based …

Creating A Legal Framework For Copyright Management Of Open Access Within The Australian Academic And Research Sector, Brian Fitzgerald, Anne Fitzgerald, Mark Perry, Scott Kiel-Chisholm, Erin Driscoll, Dilan Thampapillai, Jessica Coates
Mark Perry
This Report analyses the copyright law framework needed to ensure open access to outputs of the Australian academic and research sector such as datasets, articles and theses. It is written in the context of an increasing recognition, in Australia and internationally, that access to knowledge is a key driver of social, cultural and economic development and that publicly funded research should be openly accessible. With the objective of enabling access to knowledge, this Report proposes the development of clear protocols for copyright management (designed as practical and effective tools) for implementation in the Australian academic and research sector The Report …

Medieval And Renaissance Book Production, Richard Clement
Medieval And Renaissance Book Production, Richard Clement
Richard W. Clement
There is a widely held, yet erroneous, belief that the invention of the book was concurrent with the invention of printing. Somehow it is assumed that the act of printing--that is producing a book by mechanical means--endows the finished product with that essence that embodies a book. After all, the hand-produced book is called a manuscript, not simply a book, and early-printed books are called incunabula, books in their infancy. We are accustomed to think of the periods of manuscripts and printed books as distinct. Traditionally a scholar working in one of these fields has known little of the other …

Moving Ahead Without Moving Up: Seven Ways To Succeed In Academic Librarianship Without Formal Advancement, Brenna Helmstutler
Moving Ahead Without Moving Up: Seven Ways To Succeed In Academic Librarianship Without Formal Advancement, Brenna Helmstutler
Brenna Helmstutler
Librarians just starting out often think ahead to where they want to be in 3-5 years, whether this is self-imposed or part of a formal goal-setting process with a supervisor. This may involve setting a goal to advance to a mid-level management position or achieving a certain level of success without official advancement. If you don’t have a short-term goal of advancement, though, it can be easy to become stagnant once fully trained and comfortable in the job. This article will discuss how you can be proactive in your job – whether you want to be ready for advancement when …

Building An Institutional Repository In Hard Times, Michael Holt, Fatih Oguz, Deborah Davis, Cliff Landis
Cliff Landis
This poster presents an overview of an exploratory research initiative to examine and assess the viability of developing an institutional repository system at a teaching-oriented four-year university with minimal monetary commitment. A need has been identified for an institutional repository and necessary steps have been taken to implement it. Several departments worked together to create a prototype Institutional Repository using DSpace, an open source repository software. This repository represents a unique endeavor, in that it has been instituted at a non-research based university and has chosen to involve students in the planning, design, implementation, and documentation stages of the project. …
Engaging That Other Audience: Encouraging Faculty Involvement In Information Literacy Using New Technology, Jennifer Kelley
Engaging That Other Audience: Encouraging Faculty Involvement In Information Literacy Using New Technology, Jennifer Kelley
Jennifer Kelley
Literature on the subject shows that information literacy programs truly thrive when they receive support and involvement from teaching faculty. While efforts to integrate information literacy instruction into the curriculum and collaborating with faculty are not new, many of the opportunities and tools for doing so are. Whether you have full-support from all faculty (lucky you!) or varying levels of involvement from isolated departments or instructors here and there, we all have access to the tools we need to spark interest, take conversations to the next level, engage individuals, and create collaborative environments for designing information literacy sessions and programs.
Law Library Digital Reference Services And Interdisciplinary Students, Howard S. Carrier
Law Library Digital Reference Services And Interdisciplinary Students, Howard S. Carrier
Howard S Carrier
This paper evaluates the provision of digital reference services by academic law libraries to interdisciplinary students, who are not affiliated with the law school, but are researching within a legal area. By using an unobtrusive methodology, which involved presenting carefully developed reference questions to synchronous and asynchronous digital legal reference services, the research aimed to discover how receptive these services are to the information needs of non-lawyer patrons. Particular regard was paid to the types of resources that law librarians direct interdisciplinary patrons toward, and whether these are mainstream university-wide resources, open access resources, or specialist legal databases such as …
