Plotting The Reading Experience: Theory/Practice/Politics, Paulette Rothbauer (Editor), Kjell-Ivar Skerdingstad (Editor), Lynne Mckechnie (Editor), Knut Oterholm (Editor)

Paulette Rothbauer

This book is about the experience of reading—what reading feels like, how it makes people feel, how people read and under what conditions, what drives people to read, and, conversely, what halts the individual in the pursuit of the pleasures of reading. The authors consider reading in all of its richness as they explore readers’ relationships with diverse textual and digital forms.

This edited volume is divided into three sections: Theory, Practice, and Politics. The first provides insights into ways of seeing, thinking, and conceptualizing the experience of reading. The second features a variety of individual and social practices of …

Libraries Across The Sea: Using A Virtual Presence And Skilled Student Assistants To Serve Students Abroad, Kimberly Posin Chan, Jaimie Beth Colvin, Marc Vinyard, Claire Leach, Mary Ann Naumann, Paul Stenis Apr 2016

Libraries Across The Sea: Using A Virtual Presence And Skilled Student Assistants To Serve Students Abroad, Kimberly Posin Chan, Jaimie Beth Colvin, Marc Vinyard, Claire Leach, Mary Ann Naumann, Paul Stenis

Jaimie Beth Colvin

The authors discuss methods and challenges of supporting branch academic libraries overseas that are not staffed onsite by librarians or permanent staff. The authors present their two-pronged approach of creating a virtual presence carefully customized to the needs of the students studying abroad along with specially and highly trained student workers. The new program, grounded partly in theories from education and business management, is shown to have substantially improved both library services for our study abroad students as well as library student workers’ performance.

Making The Most Of The Transition From Student To Professional, Anne Jumonville Graf Apr 2016

Making The Most Of The Transition From Student To Professional, Anne Jumonville Graf

Anne Jumonville Graf

As I have recently discovered, there is a strange period of adjustment when you first transition from life as a library school student to that of a practicing librarian. I graduated from library school several months ago and although I was lucky enough to accept a position that began almost immediately afterward, that didn’t necessarily mean I immediately stopped thinking of myself as a student and just “switched” to being a professional. Of course, I had previous work experience to draw upon; I had gained valuable practical experience in a library while in school. In short, I had done many …

Information Literacy Threshold Concepts And The Acrl Framework For Information Literacy For Higher Education, Gayle Schaub, Hazel Mcclure

Gayle Schaub

In this session, McClure and Schaub, editors of Teaching Information Literacy Threshold Concepts: Lesson Plans for Librarians will discuss the idea of threshold concepts and how conceptual teaching has been transformative in their work as information literacy instructors and library liaisons.  The editors began their research in threshold concepts as a way to focus on the core, elemental ideas rather than procedural skills in library instruction.  At the same time, the use and discussion of information literacy threshold concepts increased in the United States as a variety of thinkers and organizations published research and incorporated threshold concepts into high profile …

Kayleigh Bohémier

The Royal Swedish Academy of Science announced that the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2015 would go to Arthur B. McDonald (Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada) and Takaaki Kajita (University of Tokyo, Japan) for their pioneering work in detecting and constraining neutrino oscillations, a phenomenon in which one type of neutrino becomes another type of neutrino as it travels through space. This article describes the science behind the prize, provides an overview of scientific contributions that Kajita and McDonald have made to the field of neutrino astronomy, and analyzes citation and authorship patterns for each Nobel prizewinner.

Doing Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast: An Approach To Keeping It User Centered, Margaret Heller Jan 2016

Doing Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast: An Approach To Keeping It User Centered, Margaret Heller

Margaret Heller

Keeping any large technical project user-centered is challenging at best. Adding in something like an extremely tight timeline makes it too easy to dispense with this completely. Say, for instance, six months to migrate to a new integrated library system that combines your old ILS plus your link resolver and many other tools and a new discovery layer. I would argue, however, that it’s on a tight timeline like that that a major focus on user experience research can become a key component of your success. I am referring in this piece specifically to user experience on the web, but …

The Brief Wondrous Life Of The Syracuse Kindle, Melinda Dermody, Suzanne Preate, Nancy Turner, Scott Warren

Suzanne Preate

In the fall 2009 semester, the Syracuse University Library launched a pilot program to test two Kindle DX e-book readers as content delivery devices. The pilot objectives included exploring additional options for access to curricular resources that are cost-prohibitive and frequently requested by library users, testing a new technology, i.e., Kindle DX, for delivery of ebooks, gauging user reactions to e-book readers, and using Kindle statistics and user feedback to develop or modify services and technologies. Through the pilot, the Library gained practical experience with a new technology and attempted to determine whether an e-book reader loan program would interest …

Information Literacy Instruction In Higher Education: Trends And Issues, Abby Kasowitz-Scheer, Michael Pasqualoni

Abby Kasowitz-Scheer

Students today face a daily explosion of information resources and the challenge of using these resources effectively and responsibly. Information literacy instruction (ILI) requires a shift in focus from teaching specific information resources to a set of critical thinking skills involving the use of information. ILI in an academic setting includes a variety of instructional approaches, such as course-related library instruction sessions, course-integrated projects, online tutorials, and stand-alone courses. Those running formal ILI programs consider curricular objectives, invoking combinations of instructional solutions over a period of time. This ERIC Digest examines characteristics of successful programs, presents specific examples of approaches …

The Syracuse University Library Radius Project: Development Of A Non-Destructive Playback System For Cylinder Recordings, William Penn, Martha Hanson Dec 2015

The Syracuse University Library Radius Project: Development Of A Non-Destructive Playback System For Cylinder Recordings, William Penn, Martha Hanson

Martha Hanson

Syracuse University Library's Belfer Audio Laboratory and Archive (Belfer) holds nearly 20,000 cylinder recordings produced during the 'cylinder era' of 1895-1929. Many cylinders have become deteriorated over the past one hundred years and cannot be played without suffering serious physical damage inflicted by the sharp styli (needles) of traditional mechanical playback machines. In some cases, even one pass of a stylus may irrevocably damage a cylinder. In response to the playback challenges of cylinder recordings, Syracuse University Library developed the Radius Project: Development of a Non-Destructive Playback System for Cylinder Recordings, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. …

What About The Book? Google-Izing The Catalog With Tables Of Contents, Angi Faiks, Amy Radermacher, Amy Sheehan Dec 2015

What About The Book? Google-Izing The Catalog With Tables Of Contents, Angi Faiks, Amy Radermacher, Amy Sheehan

Angi Faiks

One of the many ways to meet the challenge of offering users a better search experience—and to continue the library's existence as a “growing organism” (Ranganathan)—in the current information atmosphere is to provide more text to search against, just as Google's Book Search does. One method for achieving this is to add tables of contents (TOC) and summary notes into a catalog's bibliographic records for books, thereby offering additional, highly relevant search terms into a library's database. While adding access points is not a new notion, libraries can start to meet users' expectations by providing them with more information about …

In a biomedical engineering lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, co-author Dr. Glenn R. Gaudette and his research team are investigating the effects of stem cell therapy on the regeneration of function in damaged cardiac tissue in laboratory rats. Each instance of stem cell experimentation on a rat yields hundreds of data sets that must be carefully captured, documented and securely stored so that the data will be easily accessed and retrieved for papers, reports, further research, and validation of findings, while meeting NIH guidelines for data sharing. After a brief introduction to the bioengineering field and stem cell research, this …
