Mixed farming systems are defined by Sere and Steinfeld (1996) as those in which more than 10% of the dry matter fed to livestock comes from crop by-products or stubble, and more than 10% of the value of production comes from non-livestock farming activities. More simply, they are systems where livestock rearing and crop cultivation are, to a greater or lesser extent, integrated components of one farming system. The more integrated systems are characterized by interdependency between crop and livestock activity, optimizing circulation of locally available nutrients. This study looks at the effects of evaluative inquiry as a tool for organizational development in the “Centro de Lenguas y Educación Intercultural”(CELEI), a small educational institution. Academic library catalogs as they currently exist are essentially static databases – they are searchable versions of card catalogs. Even the display in many systems resembles the old-fashioned card. By contrast, eJournals (and websites and eBooks, for that matter) contain dynamic information. URLs change, platforms change, vendors change, the same title is hosted on multiple changing platforms. Is it possible with today’s library catalog to effectively present metadata for online formats when each change must be input manually? This study investigated the relationship of out-of-class English use and proficiency gains. It also explored the relationship of gender, proficiency level and native language and the possible effect of these demographics on out-of-class English use and language gains in English. Though some studies have shown that those who spend more out-of-class time using the target language have higher language gain (Seliger, 1977), other studies have not found this to be true (Day, 1985; Freed 1990; Spada, 1986). The following paper examines the growing fear and discrimination currently projected towards Islam and Muslims in the United States. This thesis will specifically focus on what role the U.S. mainstream media has played in either increasing or decreasing Islamophobia amongst the American public post September 11, 2001. The research collected to conduct this study came from theories of political science, conflict resolution, international affairs, psychology, sociology, and personal interviews. Sociology

Interdisciplinary studies comparing fisheries-dependent regions across the North Atlantic find a number of broad patterns. Large ecological shifts, disastrous to historical fisheries, have resulted when unfavorable climatic events occur atop overfishing. The "teleconnections" linking fisheries crises across long distances include human technology and markets, as well as climate or migratory fish species. Overfishing and climate-driven changes have led to a shift downwards in trophic levels of fisheries takes in some ecosystems, from dominance by bony fish to crustaceans. Fishing societies adapt to new ecological conditions through social reorganization that have benefited some people and places, while leaving others behind. Characteristic …

Clinic Variation In The Cost-Effectiveness Of Contingency Management, Todd A. Olmstead, Nancy M. Petry

This study determined whether, and by how much, the cost-effectiveness of contingency management (CM) varied across the eight clinics in the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network MIEDAR trial. Incremental costs, incremental outcomes, and incremental costeffectiveness ratios (ICERs) of CM compared to usual care were calculated, compared and contrasted for each of the clinics. Results showed that the incremental cost of using CM compared to usual care varied by a factor of 1.9 across the clinics, ranging from an additional $306 to an additional $582 per patient. Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This preliminary report describes historical research and an intensive archeological survey conducted for a 4.9-mile-long stretch of FM 2092 in Menard County by Prewitt and Associates, Inc. The work was performed for the Texas Department of Transportation in conjunction with a road improvement project beginning at the eastern Menard city limit and extending eastward to just beyond Fivemile Crossing. Crossing over Pleistocene and Holocene alluvial terraces of the San Saba River, the project area is located in a high-probability area for buried prehistoric sites and has a dynamic history of intensive use since Spanish colonial times. Although homeownership rates currently stand at historically high levels for all segments of the U.S. population, large gaps in homeownership rates remain when comparing various groups of the population. As of the third quarter of 2006, the non-Hispanic White (hereafter, White) homeownership rate was 76 percent while African-American and Hispanic homeownership rates were below 50 percent and the Asian homeownership rate was 60 percent. The homeownership gap between African-American and White households was larger in 2006 than it was in 1990, while the homeownership gap between Hispanics and Whites was only slightly smaller in 2006 than it was in 1990. …

In 2004, a group of Illinois librarians was awarded a research grant to assess the state of Illinois’ science serial collection. This collection assessment focused on academic libraries in the state, specifically those participating in the Consortium of Academic Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI), but also including another 10 academic libraries in the state that do not belong to the consortium. Current serial subscription data were collected through both automated and manual means and the analysis was conducted in conjunction with Ulrich’s Serials Analysis System. Clashing Cultures: A Model Of International Student Conflict, Ellen I. Shupe

Although researchers have noted that interactions among people from different cultural backgrounds can result in interpersonal conflict, little is known about the nature of this conflict and its effects on the individuals involved. The current study attempts to address this gap in the literature. It conceptualizes interpersonal, intercultural conflict as a stressor and proposes and tests a model of conflict experiences, using data from graduate students representing approximately 50 countries. Results of path analyses of the model indicate that although cultural distance does not predict interpersonal, intercultural conflict, conflict strongly predicts poor work-related and sociocultural adaptation, and these negative effects …

In quantile regression, the goal is to estimate theγ quantile of Y given values for p predictors. Methods for making inferences about the individual slope parameters have been proposed, some of which have been found to perform very well in simulations. But for an omnibus test that all slope parameters are zero, it appears that little is known about how best to proceed. For the special case γ =.5, a drop-in-dispersion test has been recommended, but it requires a large sample size to control the probability of a Type I error and it assumes that the usual error term is …

Three Bayesian approaches are considered for the selection of binomial proportion parameters when data is subject to misclassification. The cases where the misclassification is non-differential and differential were considered, thus extending previous work which considered only non-differential misclassification. In this article, various selection criteria are applied to a simulated data set and a real data set.

A forecasting model for a nonstationary stochastic realization is proposed based on modifying a given time series into a new k-time moving average time series. The study is based on the autoregressive integrated moving average process along with its analytical constrains. The analytical procedure of the proposed model is given. A stock XYZ selected from the Fortune 500 list of companies and its daily closing price constitute the time series. Both the classical and proposed forecasting models were developed and a comparison of the accuracy of their responses is given.

A Comparison Of Procedures For The Analysis Of Multivariate Repeated Measurements, Lisa M. Lix, Anita M. Lloyd

Three procedures for analyzing within-subjects effects in multivariate repeated measures designs are compared when group covariances are heterogeneous: the multiple regression model (MRM) with a structured covariance, Johansen’s (1980) procedure, and the multivariate Brown and Forsythe (1974) procedure. A preliminary likelihood ratio test of a Kronecker product covariance structure is sensitive to sample size and derivational assumption violations. Error rates of the procedures are generally well-controlled except when the distribution is skewed. The MRM procedure displayed few power advantages over the other procedures.

Three measures of overlap, namely Matusita’s measureρ , Morisita’s measure λ and Weitzman’s measure Δ are investigated in this article for two exponential populations with different means. It is well that the estimators of those measures of overlap are biased. The bias is of these estimators depends on the unknown overlap parameters. There are no closed-form, exact formulas, for those estimators variances or their exact sampling distributions. Monte Carlo evaluations are used to study the bias and precision of the proposed overlap measures. Bootstrap method and Taylor series approximation are used to construct confidence intervals for the overlap measures
