Placing Social Policy? Reflections On Canada’S New Deal For Cities And Communities, Neil Bradford

This article analyses the New Deal for Cities and Communities pursued by the federal Liberal government between 2004 and 2006. Situating the initiative in broader urban policy debates about the merits of place-based interventions in tackling problems of poverty and exclusion, it is argued that the New Deal represented a novel attempt at "interscalar policy coordination" within Canadian federalism. Three specific policy tools are identified as central to the New Deal framework-municipal revenue transfers; urban development agreements; and community action research. To understand the New Deal's impact, the implementation of these tools is explored in the context of the City …

This article reports on certain studies conducted as part of a broader exploration of Muslim diasporic experiences of political integration and citizenship in contemporary Canada. Both within the Muslim community and between that community and other Canadians, social relations and social representations have recently been undergoing profound reconfigurations, reflective of the ebbs and flows of global forces. Through in-depth interviewing of Canadian Muslims and a discourse analysis of the transcripts of parliamentary Hansard, this article explores the dialectics of two discourses in Canada: a dominant discourse of concern regarding anti-Muslim words and actions in Canada and beyond, and a secondary …

Archival data from a survey of parent observations was used to determine the prevalence of social and behavioral problems in children with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). Parent observations were surveyed using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for 61 children with ACC who were selected from the archive based on criteria of motor development suggesting a relatively high general level of functioning. Younger children with ACC (ages 2–5) were rated as primarily having problems with sleep. Older children with ACC (ages 6–11) manifested problems in attention, social function, thought, and somatic complaints. The older children with ACC were also …

As new subject area librarians (for the Arts and Humanities respectively) at Virginia Commonwealth University interested in collaborative possibilities, we intend to demonstrate a plan for integrating visual literacy into traditional information literacy programs, including introductory library orientation sessions. This virtual poster will report on efforts at ARL libraries to coordinate these activities and hopefully emphasize to instruction librarians the increasingly important role of visual resources and of the need to have enough experience with them to help patrons using library and other resources to locate images. The Nebraska courts face a challenge shared by many state courts, determining the optimum number of judges needed to successfully do the work of the district, county and juvenile courts. Maintaining an adequate level of judicial resources is essential to effectively manage and resolve court business while providing meaningful access to the courts for the citizens of Nebraska. The Impact Of The 1990'S Economic Boom On Less Educated Workers In Rural America, Elizabeth E. Davis, Stacie Bosley

This study uses National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) data to investigate whether the effect of local labor market conditions on the earnings of workers differs by gender, education level, or metropolitan/nonmetropolitan location. The results suggest that local economic conditions in the late 1990s did have a positive effect overall on wages for men with no more than a high school degree and for women regardless of education. Further, there is evidence of a difference between metro and nonmetro labor markets, suggesting that the 1990s boom helped urban less-educated workers but not those in rural areas. The environmental movement relies on scientific claims to justify its calls for protectionist policies. These claims can be followed in the scientific literature using bibliometric methods such as citation analysis. Citation analysis was used to deconstruct the literature of endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) sciences as it emerged and developed time from 1980 through 2004. This study explored how the attributes of scientific papers such as topic, journal, experimental model, document type, and support or negation of hypotheses impacted their influence (quantified as times cited) within the field over time. The current study examined the nature of diversified online shoppers with respect to existing differences in their level of website feature preferences, Internet experience (usage and shopping behaviors) and individual demographic characteristics. Using an online survey, 540 individuals residing within United States responded to questions concerning their demographics, extent of Internet usage, online visiting and purchasing behaviors and preference for website features. Individuals were categorized into different user groups- low, medium and high, depending on the extent of their self-reported diversified online shopping across the nine specific product categories. This study examined the reliability and validity of a new measure, an inventory designed for the assessment of Dependent Personality traits. The new scale, the Dependent Personality Inventory, uses a dichotomous (True/ False) answer format and produces 8 subscales which correspond with the individual criterion of the disorder as defined by the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th edition (DSM-IV-TR). The scale was administered to a sample of 82 students attending a large mid-western university in the United States. Parkinson's disease (PD) is an idiopathic progressive neurological disorder. Improvement in Parkinsonian motor function has been established with subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS). Recently, the relationship between DBS stimulator settings and motor function has begun to be explored however, no study to date has investigated the relationship between DBS settings and neuropsychological functioning. This study evaluated the extent to which DBS settings (i.e., amplitude, frequency, and pulse width) are associated with post-operative performances on the RBANS (Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status).
