A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Effects Of Computer Anxiety On Performance In A Computing-Intensive Environment, Mari W. Buche, Larry R. Davis, Chelley Vician Jan 2007

A Longitudinal Investigation Of The Effects Of Computer Anxiety On Performance In A Computing-Intensive Environment, Mari W. Buche, Larry R. Davis, Chelley Vician

College of Business Publications

Computers are pervasive in business and education, and it would be easy to assume that all individuals embrace technology. However, evidence shows that roughly 30 to 40 percent of individuals experience some level of computer anxiety. Many academic programs involve computing-intensive courses, but the actual effects of this exposure on computer anxiety are unknown. This study contributes to the literature as follows. First, direct evidence of a relationship between longitudinal changes in individuals' computer anxiety and performance are reported. Second, the effects of changes in computer anxiety are shown to be dependent on individuals' initial level of anxiety. Third, some …

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Unifying Discourse For The Mining Industry?, Margot J. Hutchins, Christa Walck, Daniel P. Sterk, Gary A. Campbell Jan 2007

Corporate Social Responsibility: A Unifying Discourse For The Mining Industry?, Margot J. Hutchins, Christa Walck, Daniel P. Sterk, Gary A. Campbell

College of Business Publications

The public perception of mining as an economic activity that generates harmful environmental impacts has generated both a corporate discourse of social responsibility (CSR) to legitimise mining activities and also anti-mining discourses. Both discourses use science to support their claims, yet they rarely agree on a scientific solution. The concept of discourse community may help us to understand the disconnect between mining companies and stakeholders. It is unclear whether the discourse of corporate social responsibility will improve understanding among stakeholders and lead to mutually acceptable resolutions to conflict.

The Moderating Effects Of Rituals On Commitment In Premarital Involvements, Kelly Campbell, James J. Ponzetti Jan 2007

The Moderating Effects Of Rituals On Commitment In Premarital Involvements, Kelly Campbell, James J. Ponzetti

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examined how rituals were associated with commitment, and to what extent rituals moderated the investment model variables (i.e., satisfaction level, investment size, and alternatives) on commitment. Although rituals promote commitment in marital and family relationships, the salience of rituals to commitment in premarital involvements has not been investigated. University students (N=100) who agreed to participate were in a couple relationship but not married. Findings indicated that rituals were significant predictors of commitment; however, no unique variance was accounted for once investment model variables were taken into consideration. Rituals significantly moderated the relationship between alternatives and investments, and commitment. …

Use Of The Elizabeth Moys Classification Scheme For Legal Materials In The Caribbean, Janice A. Modeste, Yemisi Dina

Librarian Publications & Presentations

This chapter will give an historical background and account of the use of the Elizabeth Moys Classification Scheme in law libraries in the Caribbean. A questionnaire was administered to librarians and library staff of law libraries. Twenty-four questionnaire responses were received from participants. One of the results of the study is the suggestion that a separate number should be assigned for the entire Caribbean in the Moys Classification scheme because of the problems being encountered by librarians in assigning numbers.

Informé 2007, Miranda Stockett, William Mcfarlane

Proyecto Arqueologico de Otoro

The 2007 season of the Proyecto Arqueologico Valle de Otoro ran from June 3-June 19 and was carried out by Dr. William McFarlane and Dr. Miranda Stockett. The goals and objectives of this work, as well as an extensive discussion of methodologies and results, are described in this report. This was our first official season of fieldwork and our primary goal was to develop a methodologically sound understanding of the distribution, nature, chronology, and degree of preservation of archaeological remains in the valley. A second, but very important, goal was the initiation of a program of education, development, and community …

Second Language Acquisition From A Mcneillian Perspective, Gale Stam Jan 2007

Second Language Acquisition From A Mcneillian Perspective, Gale Stam

Faculty Publications

Most second language acquisition research has concentrated on learners’ speech. This paper argues that it is necessary to look at both learners’ speech and gesture in order to better understand second language acquisition. It provides a summary of the second language acquisition process and the types of studies that have been conducted in the field. It discusses how gesture can be used to investigate learners’ thinking for speaking.

[Link Foundation Fellowship Final Report], Merrill Jones Barradale

Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports

My research seeks to understand investment decision making in the electric power sector as it relates to wind energy and, ultimately, other forms of renewable energy, by investigating investor attitudes, preferences, and behavior. One strand of my research focuses on industry response to political uncertainty. One piece of this research addresses current policy incentives for wind energy. The primary source of current support for renewable energy, the federal production tax credit (PTC), typically gets renewed on a short-term basis (one to two years at a time), creating regular intervals of uncertainty about future policy. My research investigates the relationship between …

Cross-Training Christians For Rural Servant-Leadership : An Exploration Of The Role Of A Congregation In Nurturing Leadership In The Community Of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, John H. Paulson Jan 2007

Cross-Training Christians For Rural Servant-Leadership : An Exploration Of The Role Of A Congregation In Nurturing Leadership In The Community Of Wessington Springs, South Dakota, John H. Paulson

Doctor of Ministry Theses

This study explores the relationship between what is learned and experienced in the Christian faith community and people’s involvement in collaborative leadership within the rural community of Wessington Springs, South Dakota. The author makes use of Martin Luther’s theology of the cross and his teachings regarding Christian vocation, including the calling of parents as family leaders. This approach to leadership development employs a missional ecclesiology, with attention to the Triune God’s transformative, sending work in the world, and examines contributions from knowledge about civil society and human and social capital. Asset mapping is examined as a tool for leadership development.

Gender Identity Disorder, Jennifer Mckitrick Jan 2007

Gender Identity Disorder, Jennifer Mckitrick

Department of Philosophy: Faculty Publications

According to the DSM IV, a person with GID is a male or female that feels a strong identification with the opposite sex and experiences considerable stress because of their actual sex (Task Force on DSM-IV and American Psychiatric Association, 2000). The way GID is characterized by health professionals, patients, and lay people belies certain assumptions about gender that are strongly held, yet nevertheless questionable. The phenomena of transsexuality and sex-reassignment surgery puts into stark relief the following question: “What does it mean to be male or female?” But while the answer to that question may be informed by contemplation …

Motorized Obsessions: Life, Liberty, And The Small-Bore Engine, Paul R. Josephson Jan 2007

Motorized Obsessions: Life, Liberty, And The Small-Bore Engine, Paul R. Josephson

Faculty Books

From dirt bikes and jet skis to weed wackers and snowblowers, machines powered by small gas engines have become a permanent—and loud—fixture in American culture. But fifty years of high-speed fun and pristine lawns have not come without cost.

In the first comprehensive history of the small-bore engine and the technology it powers, Paul R. Josephson explores the political, environmental, and public health issues surrounding one of America's most dangerous pastimes. Each chapter tells the story of an ecosystem within the United States and the devices that wreak havoc on it—personal watercraft (PWCs) on inland lakes and rivers; all-terrain vehicles …
