News Groups Must Innovate Or Die, Carla Kimbrough
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications
Without dedication to and movement in innovation, the newspaper industry will surely die a slow and painful death.
Innovation is something our industry struggles with, but most realize we must innovate or die. The American Press Institute launched Newspaper Next, a project designed to research and test new business models. API is working with Innosight, a consulting and training firm founded and led by Harvard Business School professor Clayton Christensen. Doing business the old way just won't do anymore. API and its Newspaper Next task force, Gannett and the Atlanta Journal- Constitution are examples of taking that realization seriously and …

The aim of the study was to obtain normative data for a representative sample of Venezuelan children for the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Teacher's Report Form. The sample was constituted by 1141 children, boys and girls aged 5 to 12 (Mean= 8.79; SD=1.85), 49% female and 51% male. Socioeconomic status was significant in a way that low SES parents scored their children as having more problems. Gender has an effect on the scores; males were perceived with more behavior problems than girls for both parents and teachers. Parents and teachers did not show agreement in the assessment of the …

Outsourcing, Offshoring, And Productivity Measurement In U.S. Manufacturing, Susan N. Houseman
Outsourcing, Offshoring, And Productivity Measurement In U.S. Manufacturing, Susan N. Houseman
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
I discuss reasons why manufacturing productivity statistics should be interpreted with caution in light of the recent growth of domestic and foreign outsourcing and offshoring. First, outsourcing and offshoring are poorly measured in U.S. statistics, and poor measurement may impart a significant bias to manufacturing and, where offshoring is involved, aggregate productivity statistics. Second, companies often outsource or offshore work to take advantage of cheap (relative to their output) labor, and such cost savings are counted as productivity gains, even in multifactor productivity calculations. This fact has potentially important implications for the interpretation of productivity statistics. Whether, for instance, productivity …

Exit interviews serve as a tool to uncover departmental characteristics and areas in which departmental change should occur,1 and they are effective in gathering information from departing employees regarding impressions and experiences in their department.2 Ultimately, the goal of using exit interview questionnaires is to obtain objective information, increase efficiency of the interview process and evaluate aspects of the department through data analysis.3

The World Is White And Slow And Infinitely Flat, Rob Baum
The World Is White And Slow And Infinitely Flat, Rob Baum
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Eco-feminism, cultural study and the environment coalesce in the form of poetic cultural commentary, originally fieldnotes. I draw exclusively from my years in the Alaskan Arctic among the Iñupiat Eskimo, who call themselves "the People of the Whale." The striking and severe natural environment, a landscape of endless ice, is central to the poetry, which richly portrays a vision of the Arctic absent from tourist travel guides, National Geographic and anthropological volumes. These magazines vend the Far North's beautiful austerity, including at times the physical beauty of its animal inhabitants, including humans, while disregarding human specificity and violence …

Federated Searching: Do Undergraduates Prefer It And Does It Add Value?, C. Jeffrey Belliston, Jared L. Howland, Brian C. Roberts
Faculty Publications
Randomly selected undergraduates at Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University Idaho and Brigham Young University Hawaii, all private universities sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, participated in a study of federated searching. This paper reports the study results including differences in time spent between searching databases in federated and non-federated fashion, satisfaction with citations gathered using each method, preference between methods, and quality of citations retrieved by each method judged by two different rubrics. Undergraduates rated their satisfaction with the citations gathered by federated searching 6.5% higher than their satisfaction using non-federated search methods. Additionally, 70% …
Living In The Margins: The Male Homosexual Experience In Salvador, Silvano Gonzalez
Living In The Margins: The Male Homosexual Experience In Salvador, Silvano Gonzalez
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Gay men across the world suffer through a reality of discrimination, violence, and hate. Academic literature supports this to be the case in Brazil, considered among many to be the world champion in the number of gay, lesbian and transsexual murders each year. Looking at the specific community of Salvador, Bahia, I have found this same homosexual reality to be the case. Though not experienced as directly as in other locations throughout Brazil, due in large part to the cities vast population and political activism, the effects of homophobia and prejudice are clearly demonstrated in this community.

Community Voices: A California Campus Compact Study On Partnerships - Executive Summary, Marie Sandy
Partnerships/Community
This study grew out of a conversation among service-learning practitioners at a retreat hosted by California Campus Compact. "What do our community partners think about service-learning? We think they are benefiting. but how do we know? Why do they choose to partner with us in the first place?" While reciprocity of benefits for the conmmunity has long been an intended hallmark of service-learning practice (c.g .. Ferrari & Chapman, 1999; Honnet & Poulsen, 1989, Sigmon, 1979, Waterman, 1997), service-learning practitioners often do not know if, when and how this is achieved.

The Electronic Ballot Box : Class, Age And Racial Bias On The Internet., Jason Gainous, Kevin M. Wagner
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This research creates a theoretical framework for understanding the effect of Internet voting on the electorate. Based on standard Downsian rational choice voting theory, we claim that Internet voting lowers the cost of voting for certain voting demographics based upon race, age, and income. We further contend that this electoral advantage may crystallize the growing turnout disparity be-tween demographic groups. The theory is tested using Bayesian inferential methods with data from the Internet turnout in the 2000 Arizona Democratic Presidential Primary merged with demographic data obtained from the 2000 Census. Our findings lend support for the theory that the Internet provides …
An Economic Critique Of Birch And Cobb’S The Liberation Of Life, Wei-Erh Chen
An Economic Critique Of Birch And Cobb’S The Liberation Of Life, Wei-Erh Chen
Major Themes in Economics
The discussion concerning humans and the environment has intensified in recent years. Now, more than ever, we must ask how we as economists can engage in a conversation regarding environmentalism when the participants come from a myriad of disciplines. I posit that it is only through an understanding of the other disciplines’ ethics and values that the economist can meaningfully engage in the conversation. This paper is an exercise in this interdisciplinary understanding. First, Charles Birch and John B. Cobb Jr.’s ecological viewpoint is presented. This is followed by the economic prescriptions arising from the ecological viewpoint. A subsequent critique …
The Implications Of Eminent Domain In A Post-Kelo World, Brock L. Toll
The Implications Of Eminent Domain In A Post-Kelo World, Brock L. Toll
Major Themes in Economics
Eminent domain has been a government power for centuries. In most cases, eminent domain is used to provide essential public goods. Using it for the advantage of private entities is hotly debated. The 2005 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Kelo vs. New London allowed the use of eminent domain for privately driven endeavors. By examining the holdout problem, compensation and the effects of the Kelo case, national reform is determined as the best solution to private/public ventures using eminent domain.
What Determines The Performance Of Graduates? Selection Versus Quality: Evidence From Top Law Schools, Eric Marshall
What Determines The Performance Of Graduates? Selection Versus Quality: Evidence From Top Law Schools, Eric Marshall
Major Themes in Economics
Several studies have examined the factors that influence the performance of college graduates. Some studies have found that a student’s inherent academic ability determines the performance of graduates. Others argue that the quality of the education a student receives determines graduate performance. Ability cannot be directly measured; however, the majority opinion is that both student ability and education quality influence graduate ability. I investigate the determinants of law school graduate performance. My law school models offer many advantages over existing research, and my findings support the belief that a student’s academic ability and education quality determine the performance of graduates.
Clinical Psychologists' Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Illness, Lynn M. Servais, Stephen M. Saunders
Clinical Psychologists' Perceptions Of Persons With Mental Illness, Lynn M. Servais, Stephen M. Saunders
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Clinical psychologists have an ethical responsibility to monitor the nature and appropriateness of their attitudes toward persons with mental illness. This article presents the results of a survey of randomly selected clinical psychologists who were asked to rate the effectiveness, understandability, safety, worthiness, desirability, and similarity (to the rater) of persons with moderate depression, borderline features, and schizophrenia. The results show that psychologists perceive these individuals differently with respect to these characteristics. The results also suggest that psychologists disidentify or distance themselves from persons with personality and psychotic conditions. Implications for quality improvement and stigma reduction in the field of …
Should The United States Increase The Federal Gasoline Tax?, Jake Ferguson
Should The United States Increase The Federal Gasoline Tax?, Jake Ferguson
Major Themes in Economics
Increasing the federal gasoline tax in the United States is highly debated. A higher tax would reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil and have environmental benefits. Downfalls of a higher tax are the regressive nature of the tax and the unfair burden placed on drivers in rural areas. An increased gasoline tax is not popular with the public, so most politicians do not support a higher tax. An increased federal gasoline tax is a good idea if the increase is large and the additional revenue is used to reduce income taxes in a progressive manner.
Wage Differentiation Among University Professors: Evidence From Uni’S College Of Business Administration, Christine Bergeth
Wage Differentiation Among University Professors: Evidence From Uni’S College Of Business Administration, Christine Bergeth
Major Themes in Economics
Previous research has found that professor salaries are greatly influenced by the external labor market, but are also affected by the mobility and seniority of the professors. Using data from the College of Business Administration at the University of Northern Iowa, this study tries to determine what factors affect professor salaries, when holding everything else constant. It was found that department, rank, achieving the status of department head, ratings from RateMyProfessor.com, and summer money were significant in trying to explain the wage variation.
