Towards Attack-Resilient Geometric Data Perturbation, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
Towards Attack-Resilient Geometric Data Perturbation, Keke Chen, Ling Liu
Kno.e.sis Publications
Data perturbation is a popular technique for privacy-preserving data mining. The major challenge of data perturbation is balancing privacy protection and data quality, which are normally considered as a pair of contradictive factors. We propose that selectively preserving only the task/model specific information in perturbation would improve the balance. Geometric data perturbation, consisting of random rotation perturbation, random translation perturbation, and noise addition, aims at preserving the important geometric properties of a multidimensional dataset, while providing better privacy guarantee for data classification modeling. The preliminary study has shown that random geometric perturbation can well preserve model accuracy for several popular …

Children empowerment through sex education can prevent children from sexual abuse. Sex education absolutely can be more efective for children if it is given earlier by parents. The problem is their parents often do not know what the importance of sex education. To fulfill the needs of parents to deliver knowledge about sex education is one of the effort to prevent child sexual abuse, a seminar had been held in this action research. After joining the seminar, there were many …

I am often asked to speak on the subject of e-business—its ramifications for modern organizations and its impact on our students who will soon be entering the workforce. E-business is the use of information technology and electronic communication networks to exchange business information and conduct transactions in electronic, paperless form. From online retail operations to Web-enabled self-service technical support, organizations around the world are transforming in significant and far-reaching ways.
A Macroscopic Validation Of The Evacuation Simulation Prediction Tool On Highway Travel Times, Kay Fortinberry Borglum
A Macroscopic Validation Of The Evacuation Simulation Prediction Tool On Highway Travel Times, Kay Fortinberry Borglum
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The purpose of this applied research study was to test the sensitivity of the Evacuation Simulation Prediction (ESP) tool in predicting travel time during high volume traffic periods. The discrete event-based simulation tool was designed to aid local evacuation planning contingencies. Research of the Florida Department of Transportation traffic count data demonstrated parallel trends in rush hour volume versus hurricane evacuation volume. A model validation was designed to test if the model closely predicted high volume travel on a major interstate. For this macroscopic sensitivity test, volume, travel time and speed were collected to examine the baseline predictability under crash …

Psychology
Terrorism, murder, suicide, drunken driving, addictive gambling, pornography, and religiously inspired violence all provide plenty of evidence that behavioral and emotional problems that are ultimately destructive to self and others are often at the root of so many global, national, and local crises. All these troubles in the world prompt several basic and fundamental questions.

"What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?": A Discursive Analysis Of Career Socialization And Decision-Making, Jeanine Mcmillen
Master's Theses (1922-2009) Access restricted to Marquette Campus
Career decision-making is an increasingly important concern in contemporary society, where the individual-organizational relationship has changed dramatically, sometimes appearing as a series of brief engagements rather than a long-term commitment. Current socialization research has not examined career socialization and decision-making as a dynamic and comprehensive process. This study explores how various communication interactions and experiences impact individuals' views of career and career decision-making. Specifically, this study analyzes young professionals' career socialization experiences. Participant accounts revealed that they are less influenced by socialization experiences within organizational structures. Instead, participants' definitions of career are a reflection of socializing interactions and experiences with …

From Quasi-Private To Quasi-Public: The Development Of Local Libraries In The United States, 1870-1930, Michael Kevane, William A. Sundstrom
Economics
The period 1870-1930 witnessed the emergence of the local public library as a widespread and enduring American institution. During these years, access to free community-based library services spread to a much larger share of the U.S. population, while the institutional structure of local libraries underwent a transition from largely quasi-private, voluntary associations to the tax-supported public institutions familiar today. In this paper we describe this transition, and document the expansion of public libraries and library services in the United States over these years, using data drawn from library surveys conducted by the federal Bureau of Education. We then review some …

The Effects Of A Still-Photo Computer Module Without Feedback On Ergonomic Behaviors, Rhiannon M. Fante
Masters Theses
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of a still-photo computer training module without feedback on safe positioning of individuals performing an assembly task and a lifting task using a multiple baseline design across behaviors and tasks. The study took place in an analogue office setting and participants were 6 college students. The dependent variable was the percentage of observations scored as safe and each session was recorded via a hidden camera. During each session, participants completed a 5 minute assembly task followed by 2 lifts and this task sequence was repeated a minimum of four …

Community Voices: A California Campus Compact Study On Partnerships (Executive Summary), Marie Sandy
Higher Education
This study grew out of a conversation among service-learning practitioners at a retreat hosted by California Campus Compact. “What do our community partners think about service-learning? We think they are benefiting, but how do we know? Why do they choose to partner with us in the first place?” While reciprocity of benefits for the community has long been an intended hallmark of service-learning practice (e.g., Ferrari & Chapman, 1999; Honnet & Poulsen, 1989, Sigmon, 1979, Waterman, 1997), service-learning practitioners often do not know if, when and how this is achieved.
