Nfl Governance And The Fate Of The New Orleans Saints: Some Observations, Robert Baade, Victor Matheson Apr 2007

Nfl Governance And The Fate Of The New Orleans Saints: Some Observations, Robert Baade, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

Prior to 2005, New Orleans had struggled to retain its NFL franchise. The Saints remained in the city, despite an outdated stadium and small media market, only through generous direct public subsidies to the team. Paradoxically, the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in September 2005 actually improved the short-term viability of the franchise by spurring an outpouring of local support for the team and by making relocation of the Saints politically untenable for the league. The long-term outlook for the team, however, appears grim. Already a small market, New Orleans’ population and business community has declined considerably due to Katrina. …

Back To The Stone Age: How Clemson’S Architecture Library Built A Builders’ Sample Collection, Gypsey Teague, Kathryn Wesley

The Southeastern Librarian

Libraries are no longer bound by print and paper. In this digital age, where Library 2.0 is a buzzword among the academic librarians, online resources are increasingly becoming the norm. How, then, do librarians serve students of construction, landscape architecture, and architecture, and provide them with hands-on examples of materials they will encounter once they graduate, when most databases represent these products only in the form of online images? This was one of the problems faced by the Gunnin Architecture Library at Clemson University when a new Master’s program in Landscape Architecture was initiated two years ago.

The available literature offers a variety of factors that may cause divorce, but there are no clear conclusions found. In this study a survey was given to …

Librarian To Librarian Networking Summit: Collaboratively Providing Professional Development For School Media Personnel, Alan R. Bailey, Linda M. Teel, Hazel J. Walker

The Southeastern Librarian

Effective professional development remains a major focus for universities, educational agencies, school districts and educators. Successful staff development projects for educators provide long-range effects in which administrators, communities, universities, students and even parents eventually receive benefits. Quality professional development encompasses a wide range of opportunities for the purpose of enhancing educator performance and excellence. This article discusses the organization and implementation of a summit designed to target an audience of school media personnel. Additionally, the paper presents the organization and implementation of the summit. In the planning of any professional development activity, two equally important tasks emerge (1) developing the …

Virtual Reference Service In Southeastern Academic Libraries: A Study Of Availability, David L. Dehart, Ann Viles Apr 2007

Virtual Reference Service In Southeastern Academic Libraries: A Study Of Availability, David L. Dehart, Ann Viles

The Southeastern Librarian

Academic libraries are experiencing a gradual decline in the number of reference transactions. In a recent compilation of statistics for members of the Association of Research Libraries, for example, the median numbers of reference transactions reported fell from 134,944 in 1998 to 66,300 in 2005, an average drop of 4.6% per year (Kyrillidou and Young 2006). Traditional reference transactions still greatly outnumber virtual transactions in most libraries, but there is some speculation that virtual reference will overtake traditional reference in the near future. In an attempt to establish a baseline for the availability of virtual reference services in Southeastern academic …

Synthesizing Gauguin: A Comparative Look At Cultural Contexts And Gauguin’S Tahitian Paintings, Joanna Miller Apr 2007

Synthesizing Gauguin: A Comparative Look At Cultural Contexts And Gauguin’S Tahitian Paintings, Joanna Miller

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

When a plethora of primary sources exist from an artist, a tendency persists for the art historian to focus on an artist’s personality when analyzing or interpreting that artist’s work. In the case of Paul Gauguin and his Tahitian works, his personality faults, extreme character, and uncouth notions and motivations become the concentration of much scholarship and can lead to a misjudgment of the artist’s depiction of the Tahitian natives and culture. This paper examines how Gauguin represented a foreign peoples and met the goals he pursued under Primitivism, Symbolism, and Synthetism by analyzing the cultural contexts of Fin-de-siecle France …

Impacts Of The Greenbelt Plan On The Agricultural Industry, Case Study: Town Of Erin, Wellington County, Robert Dwayne Evans

MPA Major Research Papers

This paper examines the impact of the Greenbelt Plan on the agricultural industry in the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area. An analysis of agricultural data from the 2001 Census and interviews with farmers living both within and outside of the Greenbelt Area in the lower-tier municipality of Erin were conducted. The findings reveal that the Greenbelt Plan does not have a negative impact on the agricultural industry in the Greater Golden Horseshoe and many participants cited the positive effects of the legislation.

Stability Of Negative Self-Structures: A Longitudinal Comparison Of Depressed, Remitted, And Nonpsychiatric Controls., David J A Dozois

Psychology Publications

To be considered a vulnerability marker for depression, a variable should, in addition to demonstrating sensitivity and specificity, also show evidence of temporal stability (i.e., remain present in the absence of depressive symptomatology). Although many cognitive factors are associated with depression, the majority of them appear to be episode rather than vulnerability markers. This study examined cognitive organization of positive and negative interpersonal and achievement content in clinically depressed, remitted, and nonpsychiatric controls. At initial assessment, a sample of 54 clinically depressed individuals and 37 never-depressed controls completed self-report measures of positive and negative automatic thoughts and two cognitive organizational …

Continuing Education And Knowledge Retention: A Comparison Of Online And Face-To-Face Deliveries, Julie A. Garrison

Scholarly Papers and Articles

Objective: Drawing upon earlier research that surveyed students’ grasp of subject knowledge after taking either an online or face-to-face EBM course, this paper explores the effectiveness of a Web-based professional continuing education course, compared with an equivalent face-to- face version. The course was designed to teach practicing medical librarians how to participate in and advocate for Evidence Based Medicine at their individual institutions. Methods: Seventy-two practicing librarians, self-selected to participate in either the distance education eight week course or the eight hour face-to-face class. Using a modified version of the Fresno Test of Competence in Evidence-Based Medicine, the authors compared …

Mapping The Literature Of Health Care Management, Mary K. Taylor, Meseret D. Gebremichael, Cassie Wagner

Articles

Objectives: The research provides an overview of the health care management literature and the indexing coverage of core journal literature.

Method: Citations from five source journals for the years 2002 through 2004 were studied using the protocols of the Mapping the Literature of Allied Health Project and Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project. The productivity of cited journals was analyzed by applying Bradford's Law of Scattering.

Results: Journals were the most frequently cited format, followed by books. Only 3.2% of the cited journal titles from all 5 source journals generated two-thirds of the cited titles. When only the health care …
