Local Distributional Effects Of Government Cash Transfers In Chile, Claudio A. Agostini, Philip H. Brown May 2007

Local Distributional Effects Of Government Cash Transfers In Chile, Claudio A. Agostini, Philip H. Brown

Working Papers in Economics

Despite rapid economic growth and poverty reduction, inequality in Chile has remained high and remarkably constant over the last 20 years, prompting academic and public interest in the subject. Due to data limitations, however, research on inequality in Chile has concentrated on the national and regional levels. The impact of cash subsidies to poor households on local inequality is thus not well understood. Using poverty-mapping methods to asses this impact, we find heterogeneity in the effectiveness of regional and municipal governments in reducing inequality via poverty-reduction transfers, suggesting that alternative targeting regimes may complement current practice in aiding the poor.

Evolve Or Dissolve: Will The "Extra, Extra" Save The Newspaper?, Elizabeth Ann Moreno May 2007

Evolve Or Dissolve: Will The "Extra, Extra" Save The Newspaper?, Elizabeth Ann Moreno

Theses & Dissertations

Newspapers have always been the trusted source of information for many years by many. The Internet and other electronic mediums have tested that tendency in recent years. Newspapers have been making changes and evolving to remain a medium of choice in the 21st century. Due to declines in circulation numbers and instabilities in advertising revenue, newspapers have found new ways to continue to be successful. They have encompassed an online presence by the use of online newspapers, fragmented and localized by the use of niche publications and reached the untouched Hispanic and Mexican market by the use of Spanish-language publications. …

Darfur: Genocide In The 21st Century, Victoria Goff May 2007

Darfur: Genocide In The 21st Century, Victoria Goff

Senior Honors Projects

The conflict in Darfur has been described as the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis” by the United Nations, and the United States has condemned the war as genocide. But four years later, the death toll of 200,000 continues to rise. At least another 2.5 million have been displaced, and neighboring countries have declared a state of emergency. Unless something is done to stop the violence, the chaos will continue to spread. Frustrated with lack of representation in the government, rebel groups from Darfur – the western region of Africa’s largest country, Sudan – revolted against its national government in 2003. The …

Are Television News Programs Becoming Nothing More Than Infotainment?, Nicole Morell

Senior Honors Projects

The money driven, have-it-done-by-yesterday world Americans live in takes no prisoners, and television news is certainly no exception. Driven by profits and struggling to keep up with the busy American with a short attention span and even shorter amount of free time, it seems broadcast television news programs have resorted to a man bites dog, blood and guts, celebrity format. What many think of as news seems to be no more than a few attention grabbing headlines already digested and spit back out in a way that the viewer can understand. In order to get down to the real story …

Offshoring And Unemployment, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan May 2007

Offshoring And Unemployment, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Economics - All Scholarship

In this paper, in order to study the impact of offshoring on sectoral and economywide rates of unemployment, we construct a two sector general equilibrium model in which labor is mobile across the two sectors, and unemployment is caused by search frictions. We find that, contrary to general perception, wage increases and sectoral unemployment decreases due to offshoring. This result can be understood to arise from the productivity enhancing (cost reducing) effect of offshoring. If the search cost is identical in the two sectors, or even if the search cost is higher in the sector which experiences offshoring, the economywide …

Indian Manufacturing: A Slow Sector In A Rapidly Growing Economy, Devashish Mitra, Beyza P. Ural May 2007

Indian Manufacturing: A Slow Sector In A Rapidly Growing Economy, Devashish Mitra, Beyza P. Ural

Economics - All Scholarship

This paper investigates the determinants of productivity in Indian manufacturing industries during the period 1988-2000. Using two-digit industry level data for the Indian states, we find evidence of imperfect interindustry and interstate labor mobility as well as misallocation of resources across industries and states. Trade liberalization increases productivity in all industries across all states, and productivity is higher in the less protected industries. These effects of protection and trade liberalization are more pronounced in states that have relatively more flexible labor markets. Similar effects are also found in the case of employment, capital stock and investment. Furthermore, labor market flexibility, …

The leadership of Robert Oppenheimer, Director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during WWII, serves as a vivid lesson in leadership. The recollections of those who worked with Oppenheimer at Los Alamos clearly attribute much of the success of the laboratory to Oppenheimer’s leadership. Of specific interest are: Oppenheimer's efforts in recruiting, his ability to create a sense of meaning and purpose at the laboratory, his technical competence, and his ability to generate commitment and involvement among members of the laboratory.

Discovering The Enemy Within: An Exercise In Unintended Thought, Carolyn I. Chavez, Yiling Ge May 2007

Discovering The Enemy Within: An Exercise In Unintended Thought, Carolyn I. Chavez, Yiling Ge

Organization Management Journal

This experiential exercise addresses a complex and many faceted problem in organizational psychology that is sometimes referred to as false consciousness. By bringing the subconscious into focus, we learn how we got where we are, and more importantly, we learn that while our environment may affect our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, we are in no way helpless pawns of our socialization. The exercise is a fun house of mirrors, providing opportunities to address myriad organizational behavior issues. We explore how much of our current behaviors are due to socialization, conscious thought, and context. We investigate intended versus actual behaviors, our …

Individual Incentives Versus Team Performance: Lessons From A Game Of Charades, Shawn E. Peacock, Patricia Denise Lopez, Marlon F. Sukal May 2007

Individual Incentives Versus Team Performance: Lessons From A Game Of Charades, Shawn E. Peacock, Patricia Denise Lopez, Marlon F. Sukal

Organization Management Journal

In this article, we describe a modified game of Charades that was developed to facilitate a discussion on the basic principles of effective reward system design. Students are organized into small groups. Incentive schemes are then manipulated so that one player within the group strives for an individual incentive, while the rest of the team play for a group reward. Through this simple and “fun” activity, students learn firsthand what happens when individual and team interests and incentives are not aligned. This experiential learning activity also offers excellent opportunities to discuss group dynamics, communication and coordination, and the importance of …

The exercise provides a robust platform from which the instructor can choose which of many group creativity subtopics to emphasize. In addition to exercise instructions, guidance is given on how learning goals related to creativity techniques, group development, interpersonal dynamics, and leadership—can be addressed in a debriefing discussion. Both “pretaught” and “retrospective” teaching …

Exercising Control At Sports Rehab Network, Mark Mensch, Barry Armandi, Herbert Sherman

Organization Management Journal

This is a field-based disguised case describing how an entrepreneur who develops a successful rehabilitation business now must operate within the confines of a bureaucratic hospital setting. The CEO of the hospital who had ordered him not to seek any new ventures given the hospital’s cash flow problems was stymieing his entrepreneurial orientation. The case has a difficulty level appropriate for a junior level course in small business management and entrepreneurship. The case is designed to be taught in one class period (may vary from sixty minutes to one hundred minutes depending upon the course structure and the instructional approach …

Social Skills Group Therapy For Children With Emotional And Behavioral Problems, Lilith Chunn May 2007

Social Skills Group Therapy For Children With Emotional And Behavioral Problems, Lilith Chunn

Social Work Theses

The topic of this research was the utilization of social skills group therapy with children with poor social skills and emotional and behavioral problems. The literature explains that group therapy has many benefits to clients that are not available in individual work with clients. Social skills group therapy is theorized to be helpful for children with mental health disorders, especially children who are physically aggressive. In this type of group therapy, it is effective to teach children the phases of using social skills and using discussion and role-play to understand each social skill. A social skills therapy group was conducted …

The study revealed that social workers have differing competencies pertaining to knowledge of human trafficking. It is recommended that it is necessary to increase knowledge and identification of human trafficking. Implications for policy are …

A Medical Mission: Healing Wounds, Improving Health, And Discovering Hope In Honduras, Michaela Maynard May 2007

A Medical Mission: Healing Wounds, Improving Health, And Discovering Hope In Honduras, Michaela Maynard

Senior Honors Projects

According to the United Nations, less than one-sixth of the world’s population is made up of the industrialized world. In contrast, the developing world, consisting of approximately 125 low and middle-income countries, is home to about 5.1 billion people. It is in these developing counties that there is an insatiable need for improved public health. In January of 2007, I spent a week working in a medical clinic in Guaimaca, Honduras. I witnessed first hand the suffering, poverty, and injustice of one small town. Yet, what struck me the most was that despite the hardships and the lack of basic …
